Chapter 24: Hanji's Mother
Levi's POV
Hanji's been with me for a couple of weeks now. I know the teachers were muttering behind my back about why I always come in with Hanji. The rumors began to spread, and I know that at one point, I'll be fired from this job. But I have promised to uphold Mrs. Mason's job until the end of the school year.
For now, Hanji's mother was due to see who I was for the first time. But at the last minute, Nanaba wanted to hang out with her. Being the supportive boyfriend, and slightly afraid, I reassured Hanji that I would be fine. I was terrified. My age hasn't been revealed yet... and I know that I am going to receive some backlash. Of course, I'm 27 and Hanji is 18- the age difference isn't common in relationships. But once her mother asks for my job, she could draw the lines between our relationship.
Someone began to knock on the door, and I froze in place. I knew exactly who was behind that front door. Part of me wanted to run away, but another wanted me to stay for Hanji's sake. Gulping my fear, I opened the front door to see someone who looks just like Hanji. Aside from the glasses.
Tall, brunette woman with hazel eyes. Her hair was cut just a few inches above her shoulders. She had Hanji's smile when she saw me.
"Ah, sir, I'm looking for the boyfriend of Hanji's."
"That's me."
She looks taken aback, holding her hand on her chest. "Oh... okay. Sorry, I'm not very good with names, sir. What's your name?"
"I'm Levi. Levi Ackerman."
"Ah." She chuckles softly, just like Hanji, with a smile on her face. "Levi, can I ask where your parents are? I want to say thanks to them for taking Hanji in despite her current state. Not many parents support someone pregnant in high school."
"About that, Mrs. Zoe... I'm not a high school student. I'm a little far from that."
"Oh... college student then?"
"I finished that years ago, Mrs. Zoe."
Silence fell on her as she slowly counted up. "How old are you, Levi?"
"27," I replied, "and I know that sounds wrong-."
"Sounds wrong? It does, Levi. Why is my daughter fraternizing with someone who's that much older than her?"
"If it's no trouble, Mrs. Zoe, do you want to come in instead of standing outside my apartment door? I'll explain everything from the very beginning. I promise, Mrs. Zoe." She hesitates for a second but nods her head to follow me inside. Oh boy...
* * *
Once the entire story was told to Marissa Zoe, I could tell she was fuming just a little. I don't blame her for thinking like that. She must've thought that her daughter was dating another high school student, got a little risky in bed, and the pregnancy began. She must've thought that her daughter was being taken good care of by the high school student's parents. Being taken care of. Everything was torn down when she sees me.
I told her everything. Especially my job. Of course, she was a little disgusted but had a bit of understanding. Nothing sexual was done when Hanji was underage. Everything I had done to Hanji was with Hanji's consent. I did hide some of Hanji's dirty secrets because I don't believe her mother had to know those things.
But yes.
Everything was laid out on the table.
"Levi... I can't say I fully approve of this relationship." She says with a heavy sigh. "But my daughter has been ecstatic being with you. I've seen her happy before, and she sounds happy with you. I have no choice, but to accept you. But if I find out one thing was done to her without her consent, I will ruin your reputation."
I swear these threats are getting old...
"I understand, Mrs. Zoe. I plan to buy a house for Hanji and me to live in. A place where we can raise the baby, and maybe more if Hanji wants more. From what I heard from her, she loves children."
Mrs. Zoe smiled, nodding her head. "Yeah, that does sound right."
"Mrs. Zoe... I'm fine with you visiting Hanji, but your husband-."
"Ex-husband," she corrects me, "I divorced him. But don't tell Hanji yet. I haven't found the right words to tell her. She used to be close with him, but after his... reaction to her pregnancy, I don't believe he has the right to be with her. And I didn't want to be berated by questions by him about her. Plus, there was a different reason."
"Is it wrong for me to ask about this different reason?"
"If Hanji wants to marry you, which I do not doubt, you would be close to being considered as a family member to me, Levi. I know it isn't what you asked, but of course, I'll tell you why." She took a deep breath before giving a strange smirk. Those strange smirks remind me of Hanji- and sometimes, it never results in a good thing.
Mrs. Zoe continued.
"There was something that bothered Hanji and me. Her father said that someone notified him of Hanji's pills, but it's supposed to be confidential. Turns out, that bastard is cheating on me. When his mistress found pills with Hanji's name on it, she notified my ex-husband about the whole thing. That's how he found out. I'm planning on suing him and his mistress for the divorce. Depending on how many children you two are planning, I'll divide the divorce money between them. Consider it a little gift from their ungrateful grandfather."
"Sounds... a little cruel, but fair."
"Just never tell them how they managed to get a ton of funds."
"Of course, I wouldn't."
Mrs. Zoe gets up from her seat after checking her phone for a split second. "Well, I best be going, Levi. It's a pleasure to meet you. Even though it... it was a little unexpected of who I was meeting."
"Why don't you stay for a little bit? Hanji should be home soon-."
Mrs. Zoe shook her head. "I still have my job to do, Levi."
"Sorry. Good luck driving to your workplace, Mrs. Zoe."
"Oh, and, Levi?"
"Yes?"
The smile on her face proved I did have aa little bit to worry about, but not too much. She shared as much power as Hanji. Like mother, like daughter, I suppose. Mrs. Zoe smiled towards me as she opened her door. "Just call me Marissa."
