Chapter 2: School Day
Hanji's POV
"That was an impressive presentation, Hanji!" Nanaba jumped on my back once the bell rang. I smiled cheesily, remembering Levi helped me with it. "Usually, you don't put pictures on your slides- because you tend to forget, Han. I'm surprised you remembered to put pictures."
"I had help with it. Come on, let's head off to match class."
Nanaba rolled her eyes, groaning as she swings her backpack on her back. "I hate math..."
"Then why did you apply for advanced math if you hate it so much?" I quickly slipped my backpack on and followed Nanaba out. "I've been wondering that ever since we got our schedules on the first day of school... you keep complaining about math, yet you are in an advanced math class? And don't put the claim that the school told you that you had to take this class. You could've slipped out of it 2 weeks ago."
Nanaba chuckles, guiding me away from groups of people just standing in the middle of the hall. "Fine, you caught me, Hanji. I wanted to be in the same class as you... I know you have like... 3 free periods, but I just want to spend more time with you."
"But you're enjoying the class, right?"
"Yeah, I am." Nanaba chuckles, tugging on my arm when Moblit walked out of his math class. "Oh no... here we go... Moblit Alert. I repeat, Moblit Alert."
"I got it, Nanaba." She stayed back as I walked up to him. "Hey, Moblit..."
He began to make a move on me, but he instantly backed up. "Hey, Hanji. How have you been? We haven't been talking since... the breakup..."
"Why should I continue talking to you? Why should I continue being some sort of friend when you told me you didn't want to associate with someone like me in a relationship? You can't have me as a friend if you told me that you didn't want to be my boyfriend. This is the end of this discussion. You're not going to talk to me as a friend because I'm never going to be your friend. Let that sink in."
I brushed past him and stormed into my math class. The entire time and I completely forgot about me leaving Nanaba behind. "Hanji, can you help me with the projector?" Mrs. Mason asks me in a gentle tone.
"Of course." I walked up to the front, helping plug Mrs. Mason's computer into the projector. While doing so, a little notification popped up on her computer about an ultrasound. I couldn't waive that out of my head when I finished setting up her computer, and I somewhat did a stupid thing. "Mrs. Mason, your computer had a notification... about the ultrasound?"
"Oh- thank you for telling me, Hanji."
She quickly falls into her rolling chair, sighing softly as she clicks away. "Mrs. Mason, I know you probably stated it before, but with my memory, I don't remember if you said it... um, how far along are you in your pregnancy?"
"Doctors have told me that I'll be giving birth sometime in December. Don't worry, you have me for the rest of the year, Hanji. And besides, when the substitute teacher comes in, I want you to help them with the class. Hopefully, that's alright with you? I know you're handling your little science club, and I hope it doesn't hurt-."
"It's alright with me, Mrs. Mason."
"Hanji!" Nanaba huffs as she tosses her bag on the ground. "You left me behind!"
"I'm sorry, Nanaba!" She starts attacking me with soft whacks. "I'm sorry!"
"You owe me! You're taking me out to lunch." She crosses her arms, and I looked toward Mrs. Mason for some sort of help. But all she could do is hold in her laughter. Mrs. Mason is one of the best teachers out there who don't overreact. Too bad that by the end of this year, I won't see her again. Maybe she might come to our graduation...
Sitting down in math class, I remembered what Mrs. Mason told me about a substitute teacher. It reminded me of Levi... how strange would it be if he showed up at our school to sub for Mrs. Mason? Those chances are quite low... besides, that's a weird thing...
