Chapter 40
The StoryBook of Legends.
That darn book, which haunted his life ever since was a child, now was five feet away from him.
Sans had been pondering how to get an apple into Gasters hand ever since he received that message. Really thinking about it, using every part of his mind to muster up a good idea. And he made up some pretty good ideas, too. Sure, he mainly wrote romance, but he was still a writer. Kinda. Sans figured out the best way to get apples to Gaster, by his own hands, was to sneak it into a dish. He didn't know how to poison the apple with a sleeping spell, and he couldn't even use his magic, but he'd trust his friends. After all, Sans didn't know much about the book and destinies. All he knew was the basics.
Now, it was about five feet away.
Gaster had just appeared in his room, as he typically did ever since Sans was kidnapped, with a grin on his face. Didn't even say anything, didn't ask Sans how his day was, just plopped himself down onto the bed next to him and creepily ran a hand down his back. No thanks.
Sans' body was getting used to the weird and uncomfortable touches. Not used to it like "I no longer feel them as much and don't notice them", but used to it like "my body now tenses up longer and it feels way more gross the more he does it because he does it constantly".
"You know, I just saw your friends. Or, should I say friend. Papyrus was with Mettaton, and after what Mettaton did to you, I don't particularly believe you two are on the best standing as of now."
Sans huffed, his chest pressed against his legs when Gaster had started. Admittedly, yes, they weren't the best of buds after Mettaton caused this mess. Then again, if it wasn't Mettaton, Gaster would have gone for someone else possibly vulnerable. Like Alphys. Sans couldn't imagine what would have happened if he got his slimy hands onto her.
The touches continued to press against random bones, a reminder of Sans in his need to escape. He knew time was ticking towards the progress of Gaster's creepiness. The only reason Sans was safe right now was because Gaster decided to hold back. Sans had to get out before then.
He really didn't want to stay and experience what happens next. He really didn't.
Then, out came the book.
Sans' breath stopped when he saw it, realizing that encounter with Papyrus and Mettaton definitely didn't end well. Gaster wasn't bragging about new hostages, which means they weren't caught, thank Toby Fox, but that didn't mean nothing was lost. Clearly something was, Sans was looking right at it. The Storybook of Legends.
Great, his two biggest enemies together. His Dad, and the stupid book.
"I tried to steal this when I was younger," Gaster told Sans, though Sans knew he held no interest in a reply from Sans. Sans was, simply put, a doll for him to talk to, touch, and do anything to. Another gross reminder of what his Father truly thought of him. "Grimm stopped me. I gave him a nice little visit after Grillby decided to spill the beans to you." As he spoke, he flipped throughout the pages. "Look right there, it's your destiny."
Sans watched as the man pointed to the page quietly. Yup. Comic Sans. His name, his picture, his destiny. And an empty line at the bottom, ready for his signature.
What if...
What if Sans did sign? What if he accepted his fate, signed the book, and got his full powers? Sans only inherited so much, and he wasn't very good with his magic, but signing the book would inherit the rest of the magic Gaster did. Then Sans would be strong enough to get his magical bindings off and put an end to all of this. If it came down to it, Sans had always decided he'd be willing to sacrifice himself for his friends.
No, he'd stick to the apple first. Sans shook the thoughts out of his head, focusing on Gaster's rant about whatever interested his short attention span this time. Sans would put his trust into his friends. Only when things went south would he sign the book, but he should try the apple first.
Maybe, just to be safe, he should grab his page when he got the chance. Just in case.
"Of course, since you don't want to sign your destiny, I'll make sure to watch your page quite... closely," Gaster said, leaning in towards Sans to the point their breaths mixed. "Just in case you happen to accidentally try and sign it."
Nope, nevermind. Sans would have to grab the book and sign his destiny the moment he needed to. So, if the apples were a bust, Sans would have to go for the book the moment the opportunity presented itself. In order to protect his friends.
Then... he didn't really know what would happen after he signed the book. He could try to destroy it. Would it nullify the destines, or would they already be set in stone once signed? What if it only forced everyone's destinies onto them without any possible escape? Would it lead to everyone's deaths?
Best not to tread that ground when it was uncertain. If he did sign, he'd kill his Father, then go straight to Snow White to see if he could remove the destiny. Then definitely give Mettaton a punch for releasing his Dad. Just one. Or maybe a few. Not enough to seriously hurt Mettaton, but a good chance to hurt a few bolts or something. Sure, he knew Mettaton ended up confessing his sins to Grillby and regretting it, as Grillby told him, but still. Just one good punch.
His chance to speak came later, after the book was teleported away with a mist of purple magic. And he asked something that had been on his mind, something that haunted him for awhile.
"Why did you pretend to be Meer?" Sans asked, "You didn't bother to stick with the fake identity after Mettaton outed you, so I don't..."
"Ah yes, my teenager face," Gaster said. "I was hoping to squeeze in a one night stand with you before I ended up kidnapping you. Honestly, it's much more fun to betray when you've already gained their trust and f*cked them. You should have seen the look on your Mother's face when I revealed my true intentions. It was quite alluring. Much more appeasing."
Oh. Great. Sans looked away, ears folding from more disgust being etched into his soul. So that was just a bonus for him, really. He never did intend to actually keep up the Meer appearance, he didn't care about Sans' love in the slightest. This wasn't about Sans as a person, he simply looked the part, and was forced to play because of this bastards weird fetishes and obsessions.
"Can we have lunch?" Sans asked quietly.
"If you insist, my dear wife," Gaster said.
Sans held back a gag and folded his arms around Gaster's. Just get him to eat an apple. That's all he had to do.
~~~~~~
That didn't go according to plan in the slightest.
Alphys had begun an old habit of hers once forgotten, her claws chewed into sharpened jabs as a small trail of blood gently trailed from the wound. That sure hasn't happened in a long time. Then again, Alphys did have a pretty darn good excuse to be stressed. End of the world. A typical cause of stress.
They did manage to do the mission for the message, but lost not only the StoryBook of Legends, but also Mettaton's body. It wasn't a good thing to hear in the slightest. Heck, Mettaton wasn't even back yet! She knew he was probably fine, but she still worried anyways.
Mettaton was easily one of their best fighters, likely the best, on their side. While Papyrus and Undyne trained with certain weapons when they were younger, Mettaton trained with them all. Heck, he was trained to fight against magic users like Gaster ever since he was born! Their best chance at a fight, gone like the wind. Ghosts could only touch physical things when possessing an object. And Mettaton's main body was gone, which meant he was no longer able to fight. He could possess a mannequin or something of that sort, but it'd be much more weaker to attacks.
In simple words: they were screwed.
After hearing what Papyrus said, Alphys realized that the Evil King was definitely anticipating their moves. He knew they wouldn't give up for Sans, so he was watching for any moves against him.
Did that mean they shouldn't try to rescue Sans yet? Should they just wait for the apple attempt, or did Gaster somehow figure out their intentions?
Alphys was good with machines, but there wasn't much more she could do with the limited supplies she had. She used everything she managed to snag onto that one device.
Well, everything except...
Her gaze lifted from the forest floor, and slowly dragged over to the two weapons at her side. The small knife she gained from Gerson, and...
A gun. It's safety enabled.
Snow White was a symbol of peace and prosperity, so when her Mother brought it out, she choked from shock. There was a lot she didn't know about her Mom, apparently, as she had admitted to having a gun. A gun. Not magical, either. It looked old, worn, but it could shoot. Heavens knew her arms weren't quite strong enough for a spear or bow and arrow her friends used. So now she had a gun.
Alphys wasn't sure if she'd be able to do it. She knew she had to kill Gaster, that imprisoning him would only delay the inevitable, but still. Killing someone?
Well, yeah, killing Gaster didn't sound like very difficult mentally. He was a creepy old dude who kidnapped his son after trying to seduce him, Alphys could certain live with killing him if her hands found the trigger. But would she be able to physically? Her gun wasn't strong enough to kill anyone unless she shot them a bunch of times in very vulnerable spots.
"Hey Alphys," A voice said.
"Oh, hey Chara," Alphys mumbled.
Wait, Chara?
Her head jerked back up at realizing the speaker, seeing the familiar red eyes and two pink circles staring back at her.
"Chara?" Alphys breathed with relief, quickly engulfing the Wonderland royalty.
"Hey," Chara said, patting her back.
"Oh my - it's really you!" Alphys said.
Alphys wasn't as close to Chara was Sans was, but seeing the teenager was a cause for relief. She'd take whatever she could to feel a little better, honestly.
"It is, yeah!" Chara said, moving to sit down onto the log next to Alphys. "I'm here to help you guys."
"Help us?" Alphys asked.
In the distance, she could see the Cheshire Cat embracing Snow White as they both chatted, two card soldiers standing behind her with swords gripped firmly. They looked the same as every other card, so she could easily recall how they tied her up rather harshly.
"It was Sans' Mom who told us," Chara explained, "Since we haven't talked in awhile, I just assumed you guys were busy, especially since Wonderland hasn't had much traffic from your world. That was until she rushed in out of nowhere and told us everything that's happened."
That explained where the Cheshire cat went. Alphys knew she disappeared like Kitty, and wondered if they both went to look for Sans, but it was clear Mrs. Cheshire was looking for backup.
"So now we're here, and we're here to help," Chara explained, "And I talked a little with your Mom. I think we have a good plan."
"You do?" Alphys asked.
"Yup," Chara said, adjusting their red colored outfit. "You ready to save the world with me?"
