I adore my family with my whole heart, but nothing is as simple as it all seems, no one tells you how difficult and hard life can be and what it will throw at you. It may give you everything you've ever wanted... But it'll soon take away the most important things to you. Just like it did me.

I was rustling around in my bed, making the cotton sheets misplace from their original state they were in before I planted my body under them. I glanced at my clock and realised that it was almost half seven in the morning, I reached up to rub any sleep out of my eyes and sat up slowly to prevent any dizziness.

I walked to my en-suite but gazed at the calander and remembered exactly what day it was today. My father's one year anniversary, from his death. Olivia was only fourteen at the time, old enough to understand. But no fourteen year old should attend their own parents funeral. It was a difficult, an emotional day. But that wasn't the only obstacle life threw at my sister and I.

Life. Made my mother turn ill. She's unable to do most things now, some would say bed-bound, even though she refuses to believe how ill she really is. In this moment in time, I feel like it's my sister and I against the world, having to fight off these obstacles together in order to physically and emotionally stay alive.

I came out of the en-suite to hear a knock emerge on my door, I turned the cold knob and witnessed my sister who was already up and dressed with a large smile printed across her face.

"Hey Elijah! Are you ready yet?" She looks at me up and down and answers her own question, she clearly doesn't remember what day it is and I don't want to be the one to remind her. I don't know if that makes me a bad brother or not, but all I want to do is protect her from the upcoming pain.

"Give me a few minutes, have you eaten breakfast?" I raise my brow with concern, hoping she has eaten already.

She replies with a nod and skips off, I close the door and decide to have a quick shower and rinse my body with my peppermint body wash, I decided to use some shampoo and thoroughly spread it through my hair, reaching my scalp to get every inch.

I quickly wrap the towel around my body and dry myself off as quick as possible, I slide on my black jeans over my plain black boxers. I decide to put on my grey polo top over my bare chest and finished my hair. I already brushed my teeth in the shower which has saved me some time.

I walk out of my room and am faced with Olivia sitting on my sofa. At the moment she's staying at my house as our mother is so bad, to the point that it's keeping Olivia awake at night, which isn't great as she has upcoming exams.

"Ready Liv?" I asked her and she nodded, I slipped my shoes on and she picked up her bag and put it over her shoulder, I grabbed my keys out of my jeans pocket and locked my house door, I decided to race Olivia to the car, in which she beat me at.

I dropped her off at school and waved her goodbye, I promised her I would take her wherever she wanted after school, I should imagine it would be the make-up shop down the road, she's lately been watching videos and obsessing over it, even when she has hardly any products.

The journey home was full of red lights and stupid drivers. I arrived at my mother's house, it was quiet and the nurse thankfully opened the door and allowed me through.

"Hey Kylie, how is she?" I asked and she took a deep sigh.

"She's fine, she's been feeling a bit dizzy and she's been having a lot of hot moments." I sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose with annoyance. Not because of my mother but because of the life she is now living.

I travel down the hallway and knock on the white door and wait for a response, I hear my mother's voice and turn the knob and become faced with my mother's ginger hair that is all tied up in a bun so it's out of her face, her blue eyes stare at me and smile.

"Elijah, my son. Come here." I nodded and took a seat beside my mother, I held her hand and sent a smile her way, she smiled back and looked around the room.

"I hate being in here all the time, I want to go out, have fun like all these other women do." My mother sighs and looks back at me, my heart drops and I suddenly feel guilty. My mother's so ill that the only way to make her better is with money. Something I don't have a lot of.

"Can't you fix me?" She questions me and my guilt deepens. I used to be a doctor. Not a well-known one but I was good at my job, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Unfortunately I'm not skilled enough to help my mother get better.

"We've been through this, I'm sorry." I sigh and my mother gives me a facial expression full of pity. She squeezes my hand and begins to smooth it. She was so in love with my father and I had such a great childhood growing up.

I decided to roam around my mother's room to find her a fresh bottle of water in her mini fridge. Her house was only small, but consisted of two bedrooms, one for her and one for Olivia. I held out the bottle for my mother to reach and drink out of and time had already flown by.

"How is Livvy?" My mother asks and deep down I believe she's upset and worried about our mother, because there is nothing we can do.

"She's good, I have to pick her up from school now." I say and sigh, the thought of leaving my mother always terrifies me.

"Send her my love." I nod and plant a kiss on my mother's forehead before leaving her be to rest. I turn the knob and allow myself out of the house and get into my car. I didn't have anything special, it was just cheap and silver. But the guilt consumed me all at once I love my mother and I always will.

I pulled up in the school car park and waited until the final bell went off, the bell that released all of the children as they conformed to it, screaming and cheering. But Olivia wasn't like that, she was the one that enjoyed school, the smart one. I chuckled at myself as the bell did go and I saw students run around chasing one another.

"Boo!" I turned around and saw Olivia standing close to the car, I didn't even see her exit out of the school, let alone sneak up on me.

"That one was good." I chuckle, she opens the passanger door and hops in.

"Where are we going then?" I cocked up my brow as she began to portray her 'thinking face'.

"The café!" She exclaimed and I nodded in agreement, I was surprised by her destination choice but I was pleased. I turned the key and allowed the engine to come to life.

We passed the green lights and passed several of Olivia's friends who were walking themselves home.

Making it to the car park was a tough journey, it was almost full and there were several cars trying to move all at once.

I opened the café doors to allow the fresh smell of coffee fill my nostrils, I held the door open for my sister as well as an elderly lady who was struggling to get out.

Olivia and I both took our seats and scanned through the menu.

"I'm having a slice of chocolate cake and a vanilla milkshake, if that's okay?" I nod as I decide to choose exactly what I want and honestly I have no idea.

I walk up to the counter after deciding what I wanted and placed my order and make my way back over to our designated table. Olivia began to tell me about her day at school, how she's made a new friend and she's passed her history exam.

Our order arrived and we filled our faces, I took a large sip from my regular coffee and allowed the caffeine to race through my body, the feeling gave me a sense of control. I know people are like that when drinking alcohol, but I'm not a massive alcohol drinker.

"Thank you." I heard Olivia try to say in between filling her face with cake. We chuckled and shared jokes until all of the items we ordered were gone, there was nothing left than a empty mug, an empty plate and a empty plastic cup which was full of Olivia's milkshake along with whipped cream on the top of it, they even decided to add chocolate shavings on the top.

"Go wait outside, I just need to pay." I looked at Olivia as she nodded and obeyed. She went outside and decided to wait. I handed over some money and got given my change from the dark-haired lady who was giving creepy smiles.

"Elijah!" My sister ran back into the café as I finished paying for our order we had, worry was written across her whole face, I was clueless to why she looked so petrified.

"Olivia? What's wrong?" I asked and held her close, she grabbed my hand and ran me out of the café until we were near an alleyway, even during the day the narrow lane was pitch-black.

We reached the end of the alleyway and we were witnesses to something awful... Something horrendous...

Olivia screamed loudly with her voice box as her body shook in anger, her hand rattled as it was holding mine. She was stunned and unable to move from the spot. I looked over at the individual who was dressed in pure black and had a mask covering their entire face... Except their blue orbs that were revealing themselves.

I try to encourage Olivia to move, but she's frozen. "Olivia!" I growl to show her that I'm demanding her, for her own good.

But yet again, she didn't move, I decided to take the matter into my own hands and pick up Olivia and run her to my car, I opened the door and put her in and clipped on her seat belt. I ran quickly to the overside of the car and opened the door, I used the stearing wheel to balance my body flying into its seat. I buckled the seat belt and quickly allowed the engine to go on. I looked up out of the window and noticed the fully dark clothed individual who was jogging towards us, but I needed to get Olivia out of here. To save her.

We passed a few orange lights but it had to be done, I wasn't going to let Olivia be put into more trauma.

We finally reached my house and I carried Olivia out of the car and onto my sofa, she was shaken up and unable to talk, she was bobbing her legs up and down from the floor which gave me a sign that she was anxious.

"They...They killed someone." She said and I nodded in agreement, I couldn't exactly lie to Olivia... She saw it with her own eyes, those innocent brown eyes witnessed something no fifteen year old should ever witness. A murder. An awful, murder.
