75. Romelle

On the morning of their departure, Keith got called to a meeting with King Ralph.

"Since you came empty handed both days you searched my Kingdom, I'm guessing you didn't find the people you were looking for here." The King said and Keith grimly nodded.

"Yes. Unfortunately I will have to go farther to find the Princess." He said.

"I heard from my son that you have also lost a lot of money from searching."

Keith didn't answer so the King took it as a yes.

"Lucky for you, I am kind enough to spare a few coin bags." He said taking out a basket from behind him and handed it to Keith.

"Thank you." Keith said bowing and took the heavy basket.

'I hope someday you'll be able to spare it to the people in your Kingdom that needs it most.'  He thought as he walked out of the room with his hands full.

Katie walked off to the garden, where she thought the Princess might be, with her small knife in hand. As expected Princess Romelle was there but Katie had to think of something first.

'How can I reveal that she might be the bandit girl?' She thought as she watched her water the flowers innocently.

'Maybe I should throw my knife near her and see if she catches it..but what if she's not the bandit and reports me on the King?' She groaned out loud but not loud enough for Romelle to hear.

'How am I supposed to reveal her now?'

While Katie was still thinking, a masked man came out the shadows not noticing her and approached the Princess. Katie touched the helm of her sword expecting the man to try to attack Romelle but she didn't seem scared at all.

Katie got closer as the man spoke to her.

"Our men's been injured, you're up for the mission, golden assassin." The man said, his voice low but she pushed him away.

"Go away." She snarled under her breath to him, her lilac pink eyes wandering around the garden. "I felt someone watching me."

'She got sharp eyes and ears, that's for sure and what the man said is my evidence now.' Katie thought as she hid herself better.

The man scoffed.

"Just exterminate the person who listened then." He said before leaving back into the shadows.

The Princess looked around with alertness in her eyes.

"Who's there?" She said pulling her dagger out from her dress pocket.

Katie put her knife back in her boots and walked out into her view.

'At least I have some evidence that she's the bandit now.' Katie thought as the Princess looked at her with wide eyes.

"Why are you following me?" She said pointing her dagger at Katie.

"So you were the bandit girl." She said and got a glare from Romelle.

"Don't mention a word of it anyone or I will slit your throat myself." She said fiercely, threatening Katie and she glared back.

"If you kill me, a knight of Galraen, what do you think would happen to our Kingdoms?" She said  back, bluffing because she didn't know what her Kingdom would really do if she got killed here.

"You already made a mistake by approaching me alone." Romelle said, prepared to throw her dagger as Katie pulled out her sword but suddenly they both heard a pair of footsteps coming towards them.

The Princess threw her dagger in an area where it would be hidden by the the tall flowers and Katie quickly slid her sword back in.

"Romelle, is there something wrong?" Prince Oliver said and Katie gulped as she saw Keith by him.

"Oh?" Keith said, "What are you doing here Pidge?"

"I thought I heard something here Sir." She replied trying not to look suspicious.

"It's nothing brother, I just wanted some fresh air." Romelle replied to Oliver with an innocent smile.

"Alright but don't stay too long outside without your guard." Oliver said and she nodded looking harmless.

"Pidge, just make sure to come back quickly because we'll be leaving soon." Keith said to Katie and she saluted to him and the two princes walked off the path to discuss some things.

After they were out of sight, the Princess picked up her dagger from the dirt and Katie slid her sword back out. She threw her dagger unexpectedly and Katie dodged it just barely and winced.

"Why should I?" She said and Katie shrugged sarcastically.

"Your brother thinks you're doing good by sneaking out, how would he react when he finds out that you steal and kill in a group of bandits?"

"Shut up! He won't believe you!" She said but Katie saw a slight tremble from her and gave a convincing smirk.

"Do you really want to bet on that?" She said putting her hands up as she saw the Princess start to give in.

"Just tell me why a Princess have to be involved in such things when you have riches here and what is up with your altean marks disappearing?"

The Princess looked down as if she remembered something bad and decided whether to share her story or not. After a moment of silence, her mouth opened.

"I'm not the Princess." She said almost shrinking down in size.

"I was abandoned on the side of a street with my little brother. We were found by the bandits. They fed us and trained me because my brother was weaker." She said and sat on the ground despite her dress.

"I was stealing some food and running away when I caught the attention of the Queen, who was there for a ceremony, from my eyes and altean marks. She saw my similar features with her late daughter who died at an early age and decided to take me in. Oliver was so distraught with the fact that his younger sister died that he convinced himself it didn't happen and when I showed up, he believed I was his real sister."

She smiled sadly to herself at the part about Oliver and continued.

"I forgot about the bandits until I remembered my brother again. He was still there unprotected without me so I went back to find them. They threatened me to stay in the group or they would harm my brother who was in a different location now." She said her story coming to an end.

"So now you know. I am forced to do this until I find my brother and get him out of there. He's the only real family I have left." She said blankly and Katie sighed dropping her sword.

"I hide my altean marks with a spell from the witch book the bandits stole long ago when I go on missions with them. I do it to convince I am on their side and not the Queen's." She added and all Katie wanted to do now was to comfort her.

Romelle had been through a lot and she was only a few years older than her.

"I also had my family taken away from me." Katie started.

"My father and brother were kidnapped unexpectedly and my mother is in the hospital, unconscious from the shock. I will look out for your brother along with my brother and father when I go to different Kingdoms." She said and Romelle nodded softly.

"Thank you. His name is Bandor and he has brown hair and blue eyes." She said and then quietly mumbled. "I hope you find your family too."

"What's that?" Katie asked and Romelle shook her head.

"It's nothing. You should go now or they might leave without you." She said.

"Oh right! Just hang on with the bandits, I'll find your brother and get him back to you." Katie said and quickly ran off.

When she got there, everyone was on their horses.

"What took you so long?" Theo asked as she climbed on Bandit quickly.

"It seems like I have more people to search for now." She said with a grim smile as Oliver and Keith said goodbyes and Keith led the way out of the Kingdom.
