Chapter 8 Game Ogre
Paityn was asleep when she got a call at ten-forty five at night. She groaned as she grabbed her phone and answered it.
"Burkhardt." She said.
"Hey, we got a homicide. I'm sending you the address." Nick said.
"At almost 11 at night?" Paityn asked.
"You know how it is. I'll see you soon." He said hanging up. Paityn sighed getting up and getting dressed leaving quite quickly. She got there getting inside beside Nick and Hank.
"Damn. Shame for him to die like this." Hank said. "He was a great judge," Hank said.
"What time did he enter the house?" Nick asked.
"Ten twenty-two P.M. Alarm went off at ten thirteen. " Wu said looking at them.
"Gives us a good estimate on time of death," Hank said.
"Were there any witnesses?" Paityn asked.
"Nobodies come forward. We talked to neighbors on both sides, and across the street. Nobody heard anything." Wu said motioning around himself to the sides.
"What about a wife, children. Anybody live with him?" Hank asked.
"Judge lived alone. His wife died three years ago. No kids. Found a gun on the floor over here. We haven't touched it. Walther .32. We ran the serial number, registered to the judge. He purchased it in 1995, had a license to carry it." Wu said turning around to move to the gun.
"We find any casings?" Hank asked.
"One. Under the chair." Wu said pointing with his pen.
"At least he was able to get off one shot," Paityn said.
"You find the bullet?" Nick asked.
"Nothing in the walls or the ceiling. Windows are intact so unless it went out the door..." Wu started as if waiting for someone to finish his sentence.
"Our killer might've been hit." Nick said. Paityn scoffed a bit.
"He's gonna go to someplace so obvious it hurts." Paityn said.
"Any blood trail?" Hank asked.
"Plenty of blood, but it's all around the judge." Wu said.
"If our perp took a shot, he'd need medical attention. Let's get an APB out to all the hospitals, clinics..." Nick started.
"Also, tap the snitches for any surgeons working off the grid." Hank said.
"On it." Wu said beginning to walk out. Paityn was kneeling next to the body when Sean came in.
"Unbelievable." He said making her jump and fall a bit and she blushed getting back into kneeling position. "It's gonna make a lot of people angry." Sean said.
"We think it was more than just a random act of violence." Paityn said.
"Yeah, there's a lot easier way to kill somebody than to shove a gavel down his throat." Hank said. Sean kneeled next to Paityn and she smiled a bit but hid it quickly.
"Patterson was one of the best judges we had. Worked a lot of cases that wound up in his court. He had, over 30 years on the bench." Sean said.
"We requested all of the judge's case files." Nick said. Sean stood up and Paityn stood up slowly not to fall over.
"Start with the most recent, see if there were any registered threats." Sean said. "Sure made a lot of enemies in all those years." He sighed. A CSI agent came walking over to them.
"Sir, we have a print off the gavel." He said.
"Let's find out who it belongs to." Sean said.
~~~
Back at the station Paityn came back with a coffee for Hank and herself as well as one for the captain knowing he was gonna stick around them.
"Here we go, Hank." She said handing him a coffee.
"Thanks, Pait." He said. Sean came walking over and she handed him a coffee.
"Just in case." She gave him a small smile and she saw him give one back.
"Thank you." He said. He gently kissed her head and Hank awed a bit. "Any luck?" Sean asked Hank.
"Nah. Nothing to write home about yet. We've been doing a cross-check on the judge's cases against any recent parolees. So far, we've got three released in the last six months." Hank said.
"Lester Cambridge, paroled from powder river, Scott Teller, released from Santiam six weeks ago, and Jamal Shutter. He just got out of Eastern." Paityn said.
"Any of them here in Portland?" Sean asked.
"All three of them. Nick's checking alibis." Hank said. Hank's phone began ringing and he picked it up asking whoever it was to send it to his computer. "Got an I.D. on the print from the judge's house. Got the match from the navy." Hank said.
"One of your parolees?" Sean asked.
"Nope. Name's Vince Chilton. Got no record at all." Hank said.
"See if we can get a match on a driver's license." Sean said.
"Renewed it two months ago." Hank said. "Got an address here in Portland." Hank smirked.
"All right let's go." Sean said. Paityn grabbed her jacket wrapping it around herself following the two of them out.
~~~
The swat team ran in front of them. They smashed the door open and stormed in. Paityn was right behind the captain and Hank. Paityn had her hand on her gun just in case.
"We're clear, we secured the premises, but you got a body in there." The lead officer said. They went in and Paityn saw his missing hand.
"Well, that's unique." She said. She kneeled next to Sean as they examined the body.
"Vince Chilton?" Sean asked and Hank put the picture up to his face.
"Seems like it." Paityn sighed.
"Which hand did the fingerprint come from?" Sean asked shining his flashlight.
"The one he doesn't have." Hank sighed.
"So our killer needed a helping hand, and got it from Chilton." Sean said. Paityn had to restrain a giggle.
"Yeah, he wanted us to find him." Hank said.
"Means our killer's connected to both of them." Sean said.
"Woman's watch? Wearing it backside out." Hank said.
"Looks kinda old. Maybe an Anqique?" Paityn asked shrugging.
"Doesn't seem like Chilton would be the kind of guy interested in women's antique watches huh?" Sean said.
"Hey, you never know." Paityn said. Sean looked at her and she shrugged. He smirked just a small bit.
"It's engraved. 'To Mary, Love Mom.' It's definitely not Chilton's." Hank said.
"Yeah, we gotta find Mary." Sean said.
"I hope Mary's not connected to this." Paityn said.
'Maybe we can trace the watch." Sean said. Paityn and Hank looked at each other.
"You know, Nick knows a watch guy." Hank said.
~~~
The next day Paityn, Nick, and Hank showed up to Monroe's door. Nick knocked and Paityn sighed feeling bad for Monroe. He opened the door.
"Good morning. Well, not that good if somebody died, I guess." Monroe said. "But, yeah. Come on in." Monroe said. They walked in carefully.
"Thanks for helping us out." Hank said.
"Not a problem. I like to help the...police whenever I can." Monroe said eyeing Nick and Paityn.
"This is the watch we need to trace." Hank said bringing it forward.
"Vintage Lusina. Very nice." Monroe said entranced. "I'm gonna have to get in there and check a few details. You mind if I..." Monroe said.
"Forensics cleared it. Go ahead." Nick said and Monroe grabbed it excitedly.
He got to examining it quickly. The three of them were standing behind him as he examined it.
"Valjoux movement. 72 C, to be exact. Triple calendar. Wow. Just pure beauty." Monroe said in awe. "Here, check it out." Monroe said. The three of them got closer to see. "Triple complications. That's day, date, month to the layman." Monroe said. "Probably made in the '30s."
"What about the engraving?" Nick asked.
"Professional. Could've been done by any engraver, anytime, anywhere." He said prying the back off it. "Oh, this is tragic." Monroe said.
"What?" Nick asked.
"Some jerk put glue in the movement. This watch is destroyed. I wanna weep." Monroe said.
"Why would somebody do that?" Hank asked.
"To stop it from working." Monroe said.
"Maybe they wanted to stop it on a specific time and date." Nick said. Paityn just stood in the back not wanting to say anything.
"Gue would certainly guarantee that." Monroe said. "ten-fifteen, March eleventh." Monroe said.
"Any way you can tell us who the owner is?" Nick asked.
"Original movement number maybe...or a service mark. I'll make some calls, whoever serviced this, will definitely remember it.
"How long will that take?" Hank asked.
"Couple of minutes, if they've got the paperwork." Monroe said. "There's coffee in the kitchen help yourselves. Nick, Paityn, you know where it is." Monroe said standing up. Nick gave him the 'really' look while Paityn had to hold back her giggles. "From the time you guys both searched my house. Remember? I mean, if you don't remember, it's right down that hall there." Monroe said pointing behind Paityn.
"Yeah, I remember." Nick said. Paityn sighed a bit as Nick walked to his kitchen with Hank following behind him. Paityn went up to Monroe gently patting his shoulder.
"You're doing great." She said smiling a bit.
"It doesn't feel like it." He said.
"You got this" She gave him a small smile going over to Nick and Hank hearing the middle of their conversation.
"Maybe March 11th connects all three of them together somehow." Nick said.
"Maybe all four of them, killer included." Hank smirked. "but March eleven of what year?" Hank asked.
"Maybe we're looking at some kind of Zodiac killer here." Nick said.
"I highly doubt he managed to kill 2 Pisces that both just happened to be Pisces in the same town." Paityn said. They looked at her confused. "What? I know my Astrology. I'm a Cancer."
"Hey, I got something, actually!" Monroe said coming over. "Turns out the watch was first purchased in 1933 by a Steven Armstrong. He gave it to his wife as a wedding present. She..." He started but Hank interrupted.
"1933. Who owns it now?" Hank asked.
"Yeah, but I got the whole history." Monroe said.
"And that's great, really, but we just need to know who owns it now." Nick said. Paityn gave him a sympathetic smile.
"Oh. I get it. Okay. Just the facts, right? Okay. Let's see, the watch serviced last here in Portland, actually, two months ago. For a Mary Robinson." Monroe said.
"Mary Robinson?" Hank asked.
"You know her?" Paityn asked.
"If it's the same Mary Robinson, I do." Hank said. "Assistant D.A. retired about a year ago. I worked a lot of cases with her." Hank said. "I got a bad feeling about this." Hank said. They began leaving and Nick thanked Monroe taking the watch back.
"You did great Monroe. Thank you." Paityn said giving him a small smile.
~~~
They pulled up to the crime scene and parked on the curb waiting to get out.
"You find her?" Paityn asked.
"Found her body." Wu said. Paityn cursed under her breath as they walked into the room seeing her in a chair with blood running down her neck and chest. Her tongue sitting on a scale.
"If it's a zodiac, I believe that is a Libra." Paityn said.
"Killer cut out her tongue, and put it on the scale." Wu said quietly.
"What's the message this time?" Nick asked. "Scales of justice?"
"No. She's the message. Mary Robinson herself. I know who the killer is." Hank said. Paityn looked at him concerned seeing his eyes watering.
~~~
"It was a triple homicide five years ago. Jack Lambert, his wife, and seven-year-old daughter were abducted from their home and taken to an abandoned quarry near Tigard and tortured for two days. I'll never forget the crime scene." Hank said. Paityn walked behind the captain since there wasn't room to walk beside him.
"Yeah, I remember the case. Oleg Stark was a contract killer. He was suspected of murders in Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado." Sean said.
"But this time it was personal. Jack Lambert was a business associate of Stark's who knew that Stark demanded ti be paid in gold. Apparently, Jack found out where Stark stashed his gold and stole it." Hank said.
"It was a revenge killing." Nick said as they walked into Sean's office.
"That's why he got sloppy. He was not the happiest." Paityn said crossing her arms.
"All the other people he killed he didn't give a damn about. Stark left a gold coin behind. That's how I knew it was him. He was tried here in Portland but sentenced to a California ADX facility in Pelican Bay." Hank said.
"How'd he get out?" Sean asked.
"24 hours ago Stark escaped. He was on the medical transfer when he got his chance. Broke the doctor's legs and beat two guards into a coma." Hank said.
"Why didn't we know that Stark escaped?" Sean said.
"Bulletin hit California state agency first. They thought they had him trapped, so they didn't go wide with it until he was long gone." Nick said.
"According to his medical records: 'Convict displays signs of Congenital Analgesia, a rare genetic disorder which deadens the nerve endings, making it difficult to process pain. Also, Stark's bone structure appears abnormally dense.' Which makes this guy...Not fun." Paityn said.
" So what's Stark's connection to judge Patterson, Vince Chilton, and Mary Robinson?" Sean asked.
"The judge presided over the trial, Mary Robinson prosecuted the case, Vince Chilton was the jury foreman who handed the verdict to the judge." Hank said. "Remember the time and date on the watch? ten-fifteen, March eleventh. That was the moment Stark was sentenced to 300 years in prison. I knew it was something, but I didn't put it together until I saw Mary Robinson's body." Hank said.
"Then that would mean, as the arresting officer..."Sean started but Paityn finished for him.
"He's coming after you next." Paityn said looking at him knowing what the captain was going to say.
"I'm gonna take this bastard down." Hank said.
"No, you're going into protective custody." Sean said.
"I'm not running." Hank said.
"He's already killed, three people. I'm not about to lose a cop." Sean said.
"He's killed a lot more than that." Hank yelled.
"I'm not gonna risk it, and neither are you." Sean said. "I understand why you wanna get him. I'd feel the same way, but protective custody, that's my call, not yours." He said. Paityn watched Sean get closer to Hank.
"Once Stark escaped he had to move fast." Paityn said not wanting it to get too violent or tense. Sean looked over to her.
"We need to check for stolen vehicles, assaults, and B&Es from here to the state line." Nick said helping Paityn. Sean glanced over to Hank.
"Well, get on it." Sean said. Hank grabbed his stuff and walked out and Paityn sighed in relief relaxing a small bit.
They sat down at their desk and Paityn looked at Hank feeling his stress just radiating off of him.
"You know this guy's been shot three times and stabbed twice right?" Nick asked Hank trying to lighten the mood.
"Yeah, I know." Hank said. He was pissed and stressed all at the same time.
"Hank, The captain's just doing what he thinks is right." Nick said.
"What's right for him is not right for me." Hank said.
"Give us 24 hours, see if we can't get it done." Paityn said.
"I think I got what you're looking for." Wu said coming over and Paityn gave him a thankful look. "The 68-year-old man reported his car stolen from a rest stop on I-5 near the California border. Perp, fitting Stark's description drove off in his blue '92 Cadillac Coupe De Ville, license plate 807 IHO. If that caddy's in Portland, we'll find it." Wu said.
~~~
"What do you know about Stark?" Nick asked handing Hank a coffee.
"What do you mean?" Hank asked.
"Where's he from? Does he have any family? Maybe we can get ahead of this guy." Nick said.
"You know that was one of the weird things about him. He didn't seem to be from anyplace." Hank said. "No record of where he was born, no record of a family. It's like this guy just fell out of the sky." Hank looked at Nick with an unexplainable look. It was like Terror and sadness all in one.
"Found the caddy. Or what's left of it. Blown up in a parking lot across from a city rec facility. 20th and Belmont." Wu said.
"Wait a minute, isn't that near your old place?" Nick asked.
"I lived a block away when I worked Stark's case" Hank said. "I guess this is my wake-up call." Hank said grabbing his jacket. Paityn stood up grabbing her jacket and wrapping it around her.
"Hank, you're not going anywhere." Sean said coming out of his office.
"Captain!" Hank yelled.
"Right now, the safest place for you is here at the precinct." Sean said. "Let's go." Sean said bringing Nick and Paityn with him. Paityn sat in his passenger seat next to Sean as Nick sat in the back. They got there and she got out carefully.
"Any witnesses?" Paityn asked walking over. Sean stood close behind her as if protecting her.
"We had some people on the scene when we got here. Quite a few of them in the park. Nobody said anything to us." The fireman said.
"You make and determination on the cause?" Sean asked.
"It's obvious somebody meant to do this. No attempt to hide it. Open gas tank, stuffed something inside, lit a match, walked away." the Fireman said.
"Plates on the caddy are a match for the one that was stolen." Wu said.
"Then it's Stark." Sean said. Paityn looked at the car getting worried about her own life at this point. She went tense a bit and she took a deep breath.
"Thank you." Paityn said giving a small smile
"Need anything else, let us know." Sean said. Paityn stood in a spot for a moment analyzing the scene until she felt like someone was watching her. She turned around seeing no one there.
"You alright?" Nick asked.
"Yeah, fine." She said walking over to Nick and Sean.
~~~
Paityn walked in her door and shutting it hearing Lyra coming over to her meowing.
"Hey there silly. I'll get you some food." she said opening the cupboard and getting out cat-food. She gently set it on a plate and Lyra attacked the food making Paityn laugh. Paityn walked to the fridge to get food and she heard something fall outside. She looked outside the window seeing nothing. "Must be some squirrel or something." Paityn said. She heard it again and she went to the window and she was abruptly tackled down to the ground. She yelped in pain as the glass shattered on her.
Oleg slammed his fist into her face bruising her face. He grabbed her shirt collar slamming her into the wall hard onto a picture frame shattering it on her back. Already blood was running down her forehead. Paityn tried to reach for her gun but he threw her into the kitchen table breaking it beneath her. She tried to stand up but was kicked into the cupboard. Lyra hissed and tried to attack Oleg but he growled and she backed off quickly.
Paityn stood up slowly and she tried to shoot at him. It did nothing to him and he grabbed her slamming her into the cupboards and then the door. He then turned around still carrying her as she tried to kick him to get free. He threw her at the stairs letting her fall down them and then picked her up slamming her into the ground. At this point, she was losing blood and was extremely dizzy. He grabbed her slamming her into her bookcase. She let out a weak yelp as the books fell on her.
"Grimm. Just like your brother no doubt." He growled slamming her into a mirror multiple times and then into the ground proceeding to punch her multiple times. He slammed his fist in her diaphragm and she lost her breath not able to breathe as he picked her back up and slammed her against the wall again. Paityn was barely conscious by this point. Blood dripped from her head onto the floor and her shirt. Her shoulders bled down her arms dripping from her fingertips and her back was pierced with glass.
He threw her into the opposite wall where Paityn watched him with blurred vision seeing her phone on the ground. She slowly tried to crawl towards it when Oleg stepped on her wrist making her scream in pain. She tried to punch his leg away but he slammed his fist into her face knocking her out.
~~~
Sean was at the hospital visiting Nick. Sean looked at Nick's room concerned as well as Juliet.
"He has three bruised ribs and a dislocated shoulder to go along with a mild concussion. Nothing was broken, however. He's very lucky." The doctor said.
"Thank you." Juliet said. The doctor walked away letting Sean and Juliet see Nick.
"I've got units posted here at the hospital and outside your house, 'round the clock', and I'll have an escort take you home." Sean said. "This guy won't get anywhere near you, I promise." Sean said. He didn't want her to know, but he was extremely worried.
"You know who did this?" Juliet asked.
"Yeah." Sean said. "I've got every cop in the city looking for him. Trust me, he'll pay for what he's done." Sean said. Sean began to walk away and he pulled out his phone calling Paityn. "Come on pick up. Pick up." Sean said. She didn't and he called again. When she didn't answer he got to his car flooring it to Paityn's house. He went to the door knocking. "Paityn. Paityn open the door." Sean said. He turned the knob opening it. He saw the table and he knew the worst had happened. He opened the door fast and saw the mess of things knocked over and thrown as well as broken. "Paityn!" He yelled. He ran around her kitchen trying to find her. Lyra came over biting his pant leg trying to bring him over.
Sean followed her over to the living room seeing Paityn laying on the ground. All the blood left his face within an instant. Paityn was on the ground going pale in a puddle of blood. She had cuts and bruises all over her entire body. Sean stumbled forward going over to her and collapsing to his knees. His hands shook as he gently cupped her cheek. He grabbed his radio.
"I, I need an ambulance at Paityn Burkhardt's house." He said his voice cracking. "She, she's severely injured." He said. He gently pulled her close bringing her into his lap. Tears streaming down his face. "B-Baby. Baby, it's me. I'm here. I'm here." He whispered. His hand shook violently as he ran his hand down her cheek. Sean put his other hand in front of his mouth letting out a sob and looking around. His eyes were bloodshot already. He wrapped his arm around her bringing her closer to him putting his ear to her chest gently. He heard the weak thumping of her heartbeat. "Pait. Pait keeps breathing for me." He said. He heard the sound of the sirens getting closer and he gently held her in his arms sobbing. Without even realizing the paramedics came in taking her from him putting her on a gurney and getting her into the ambulance. Sean got on with her holding her hand.
~~~
Within 20 minutes they were back at the hospital. Paityn was in a room getting checked out and removing the glass as well as wrap up the wounds. Sean was sitting in a chair with his hands clenched tightly. He knew he had to tell Nick. He waited for the news and he couldn't even stand to be more polite and professional.
"Paityn has been stabilized. She's receiving blood right now. She has a major concussion, a broken wrist, bruised vertebrae, and multiple wounds that needed stitching mainly on her back. Her right leg has some major bruising. It's a miracle she's even alive." The doctor said. Sean shook.
"What, what is her chance of survival?" He asked.
"We think she'll make it. There is no internal bleeding that we can tell yet." She said walking away. Sean covered his mouth seeing the dried blood all over him. He stood up wobbling to Nick's room. Nick looked at him shocked.
"What the hell happened?" Nick asked. Sean looked at him with bloodshot eyes and tears streaming down her face. "Paityn. Oh my god. Is she okay? Captain, please tell me she's okay." Nick said. His eyes began watering and Sean walked in.
"She, She got hurt pretty bad, but she's alive." He whispered. Nick looked at his suit.
"Is that..." He started but he didn't need an answer to know.
"I'm going to make him pay for what he's done. I promise." Sean said.
~~~
It had been at least a week since everything happened. Nick was discharged and on a leave at work while he fully recovered. Paityn hadn't woken up yet. Sean sat by her side holding her hand gently.
"Hey, Pait. It's me. I'm here again. The doctor said you're healing well." Sean said. "I hate this. I want to hear your voice. I want to see your eyes. Paityn. I want to see you smile." He said. Tears fell down his face and he stood up gently kissing her head. He took a deep breathe preparing to leave when she grabbed his hand weakly.
"S-stay." She said weakly. Sean looked at her shocked and he sat down quickly.
"Okay, Okay I'm here. It's alright." He said. She winced a bit.
"How long, have I been out?" She asked.
"About a week. Paityn, oh my god." He said. Paityn looked at him barely able to open her eyes.
"I can't open my eyes too much." She said. Sean laughed a bit cupping her face gently. She leaned into his palm.
"I missed you." He said quietly. She forcefully sat up yelping in pain and he tried to make her stop but she didn't listen. She looked at him in the eyes opening hers wider. Paityn gently cupped his face wiping his tears off.
"It's about time I help you." She said giving him a small smile.
"You help me without realizing it." He said. "I have to go back to work." He said. He gently kissed her head and he let go of her hand to leave. He was about to walk out of the door when Paityn stopped him.
"Wait. Sean." She said. He looked at her confused. She motioned for him to come back over and when he did she grabbed his tie pulling him forward and slamming her lips onto his kissing him. It shocked him for a moment and he quickly kissed back and she wrapped her arms around his neck gently. Sean let go of the kiss for air and he smiled like a dork as well as Paityn. "I guess it's time to figure out who won the bet." Paityn joked making Sean laugh. She gently kissed him again and she heard a click with a bright light following it and she winced moving back seeing Nick with a Polaroid.
"Hey, sis." He said smiling. He shook the picture a bit. "You two are absolutely adorable. Also, Hank won that bet. Just saying". Nick said. Paityn laughed as Nick came over and hugged her. "He hurts you, I'll deal with him," Nick whispered.
"Nick!" Paityn laughed and Nick laughed with her.
"Shall we head to work detective Burkhardt?" Sean asked straightening his tie. Paityn laughed a bit.
"You both shall. Keep a watch on him, Nick." Paityn said and Nick laughed making Sean blush and walk out.
~~~
After around 2 more weeks in the hospital recovering, Paityn had a few stitches taken out, but not all of them quite yet. Paityn stood up getting dressed carefully. Her new scars lining her back as well as a few stitches. She had Sean coming over to come and bring her home, what she didn't know was that while she was getting dressed he was there. She managed to get her pants and she struggled with her shirt wincing a bit when she had to try and get it above her head. She took a deep breathe about to call for a nurse to help when Sean walked over.
"It's just me." He said. Paityn turned a light pink as Sean carefully helped her get her shirt on. "There." He said giving her a small smile.
"Thank you." She said giving him a small smile. He carefully had an arm around her waist guiding her out slowly so she wouldn't fall over. She leaned on him just a bit to keep weight off her leg. Sean helped her into his car carefully and he got in afterward. When they got to her house she looked at him. "Lyra. Who's taking care of Lyra?" She asked.
"I am. Juliet offered but since her house was a mess, I didn't think a cat would help. I'll get her back to you I promise." He said. She smiled a bit opening the door and slowly trying to get out. "Hang on, I got you." He said getting out and going to her side gently picking her up out of the car. Paityn walked with Sean to the door opening it slowly. She looked around at her house sadly.
"Shit." She said looking around. Mini flashbacks of Oleg slamming her into everything. Blood coated quite a bit of the objects around. She took a few strides forward and kneeled by the broken glass. "This is gonna be a while." She said. Sean began carefully helping clean everything up.
