Chapter 20: Happily Ever Aftermath

(I apologize for the late update. I was going to try and update more frequently, but we just put my dog down and I couldn't function afterward. I'm doing better now so let's get this show on the road!

P.S. There is a small trigger warning for a flashback of SA decently early in this chapter. I'll underline it so you know where it is.  )

Paityn, now 23 weeks, with a noticeable baby bump finally formed, had begun attracting unwanted attention at work. News, unfriendly people, and most importantly, Sean had begun to get more concerned.

Paityn lay on their shared bed at home, Sean's arms were wrapped around her belly as if shielding it. She couldn't sleep. The baby had begun kicking, and of course, was nocturnal. They weren't doing it now but she knew better. The moment she would close her eyes, they would start kicking. Not only that, but Sean's arm under her side wasn't the most comfortable. She wouldn't admit that though, because she knew it made him comfortable.

"Can't sleep?" He asked suddenly, causing her to jump.

"How'd you know? And how long have you been up?" Paityn asked. Sean moved his arms out from under her and took a breath.

"I've been with you long enough to know you toss and turn in your sleep. The baby kicking again?" He asked. She shook her head.

"No. Not yet, but it's like, as soon as I close my eyes they start kicking. Like it knows I'm trying to sleep. It has to know I need sleep in order for them to keep growing." Paityn ranted causing Sean to kiss her head.

"I'll go make some Chamomille tea for you." Sean started to lean up and Paityn followed. She sat on one of the stools by the island in the middle of his kitchen and watched him pour the boiling water over tea leaves. "It's bad for the baby to have too much of this so don't drink it too fast," Sean said, handing her a small teacup of tea. She hummed in appreciation and sipped a little, feeling the warmth spread throughout her body.

As if on cue, the baby started kicking. "You little..."Paityn started followed by Sean laughing.

"They like the tea I guess." Sean kissed her head walking around his condo.

"Or they hate it." Paityn stood up, holding the cup of tea in her hands. Sean gave her a small smile and shook his head.

"I'd like to pretend I make decent tea. It's kinda a Zauberbiest job." Sean said. Paityn scoffed and then laughed, sitting down on the couch while he stared out the window.

"You know, we do still have to buy all the baby room stuff. We don't even have a crib yet and we're over halfway." Paityn looked down at her stomach, her heart fluttering. She wouldn't admit it out loud, but she was terrified. Her aunt died before she could ask any type of questions and so she had no idea if a Grimm birth was going to be any different from a regular Wesen or Human. To top it off, the baby was a huge mix. Not only was it going to be part Grimm, but it was also going to be Human and either Hexen or Zauberbiest.

Thankfully, before her mind could delve too deep into fears, the chamomile tea worked its magic and she started becoming drowsy. Sean watched her lay down on the couch after taking the final sip and passing out. She needed the sleep desperately. Did he use a small spell on the tea to help her sleep? Absolutely. He went and grabbed the softest blanket he could find and a pillow for her so she didn't have to move. When she was all tucked in, Sean kissed her cheek and went into the bedroom to sleep the rest of the night away.

At the crime scene the next day, Paityn winced at the body lying on the floor surrounded by glass. If she didn't know any better, she'd of thought it was a suicide.

"Thought it could've been an accident, till we saw the claw marks on her face and the exploded eyeballs, which I can't say I've seen before or would ever like to see again," Wu said.

Paityn kneeled to get a closer look at the woman's face. It looked as if the eyes had swelled up and then exploded. "I mean, did she have a cat maybe?" Paityn felt a pang, she missed Lyra.

"Even if she did, what would have caused the eyeballs to explode?" Hank asked.

"Well, say she has some type of eye disease. Forgets her meds or something and so her eyes keep swelling up. They quite literally get so bad she is blind and walking around. Her supposed cat gets stepped on and then attacks her causing the scratch on her face and then she falls over the railing. The impact on her head after she fell caused her eyes to burst, kinda like a water balloon." Paityn said.

"And that's something I didn't want to imagine today. Thank you for that unpleasant image, Pait." Wu winced while Nick laughed.

"Who found her?" Nick asked.

"She has two daughters. Tiffany and Taylor. Neither of them lives at home. The older one, Tiffany, called her mother this morning but she didn't respond. Came over to see if anything was wrong and voila." Wu summed up.

"Where is she now?" Hank asked.

"In the dining room with the other sister," Wu said.

"Have either of them touched the crime scene?" Paityn asked.

"They were both here when we arrived. Tiffany said she was too freaked out when she saw her to do anything except dial 911." Wu said.

"And there's a lot of broken glass." Hank kicked some on the floor lightly, so as to not disturb the crime scene.

"Chandelier." Wu pointed upwards causing them to look at what was probably a beautiful chandelier.

"She could have been pushed," Hank said.

"Or she tried to Indiana Jones it by jumping onto the chandelier to get away. Any signs of forced entry?" Paityn asked.

"None that we could find. All doors and windows were locked." Wu said.

They then went upstairs only to find more broken glass. That was when Nick pointed out that the mother had no cuts on her feet, so she had to have fallen either during or before the glass was all broken. That's when they decided to go talk to the sisters.

When they arrived in the room with the two ladies, Taylor was absolutely distraught. Paityn gave her a look of reassurance.

"I'm detective Griffin, these are both Detective Burkhardt. We're sorry for your loss." Hank stated softly.

"We were hoping you'd be up for answering a couple of questions," Paityn said.

"All right," Tiffany said.

"Do you have any idea who could've done this?" Nick asked.

"Yes," Taylor said. You could tell Tiffany didn't want to mention them when Nick asked who it was.

"Our brother-in-law Arthur Jarvis," Tiffany said.

"You have another sister?" Paityn asked.

"Stepsister. Her name is Lucinda." Taylor said.

"Do they live close by?" Nick asked.

"About a mile away. Arthur came here yesterday and asked our mother for money." Tiffany stated.

"She turned them both down. He and Spencer both." Taylor started crying again and Paityn went over to her side, placing her hand on her shoulder. Taylor gave her an appreciative look.

"That would be Spencer Harrison. He's Lucinda's godfather, and he likes to poke his nose into everyone's business." Tiffany rolled her eyes.

"Are they in some type of financial trouble?" Paityn asked.

"Apparently," Taylor said.

"Spencer never liked our mother. Thought she married Lucinda's father for his money." Tiffany finished. The trio gave each other a knowing look. They had a suspect.

They drove to Arthur's place and got out of the car. Very large mansion. Paityn smiled softly.

"I would love to live in a place like this someday." She smiled.

"With Sean's money, you probably will." Hank laughed as Nick answered a phone call. Paityn hit his shoulder playfully causing him to laugh. Hank rang the doorbell and a woman answered it.

"Detectives Griffin and Burkhardt Portland P.D. We're looking for Arthur Jarvis?" Hank asked.

"Oh, I'm Mrs. Jarvis. Won't you come in?" She said. They stepped in and looked around while Lucinda brought them to an office.

"Sorry, sorry I know you're in the middle of something but there's three police detectives here. They want to talk to you." She said. "they didn't say what it was about. Is everything okay?" She asked.

"Everything's fine," Arthur said and they walked back out of the room to the three police detectives.

"Do you want me to stay?" Lucinda asked.

"No, I'm sure I can handle whatever these guys need." He said.

"Actually, it would be better if she did stay. You are Arthur Jarvis?" Nick flashed his badge. Arthur confirmed and they asked to speak to them in private, which caused him to have Spencer stay as well.

"Mrs. Jarvis we regret to inform you that Mavis Kerfield was Murdered last night," Paityn said. The look of shock filled their faces. Arthur pulled Lucinda closer, but she didn't cry.

"Are you certain she was murdered?" Spencer asked.

"It was a homicide yes," Nick said. "And we'd like to ask you all a few questions," Nick looked around at them, and that's when they started getting the clue that they were suspects.

When Hank told them they knew they saw her yesterday about financial concerns, they started getting angry. Spencer woged and Paityn took a step back, not recognizing the bat like Wesen in front of her. They asked for just a few moments so they went outside to wait. Nick had a phone call and took it. When he was done he motioned to Hank for just a moment and asked Paityn to come over.

"What's going on? Are you okay?" Paityn asked.

"Juliet contacted the Rhinebeck Police Department where Mom and Dad's deaths were investigated," Nick said.

"And?" Paityn motioned for him to continue.

"They reclassified it as a homicide." Nick continued and Paityn's heart dropped to her stomach. "They had 4 suspects. 3 of which we took down recently, but the 4th one I don't recognize."

"I doubt I will either but shoot." Paityn crossed her arms.

"Akira Kimura," Nick said. Paityn sat for just a moment before shaking her head.

"I have no clue." Paityn sighed and Nick smiled softly.

"It's fine. Let's get them back to the station for questioning." Nick said.

"Not too much stress I hope?" Sean asked. Paityn was taking some prenatal medications while Nick and Hank took on the interviews.

"Nope. Nothing awful. Besides seeing exploded eyeballs but I've seen worse." Paityn said. A quick flashback of Leo and what he was going to do to her flashed before her eyes. If Sean hadn't helped her, she'd probably be pregnant with someone else's child.

"You okay?" Sean asked, seeing her wince.

"Yeah. Just thinking of past cases. Nothing too intense." Paityn gave him a reassuring smile. Sean didn't believe her but didn't push it. He'd question her at home.

They watched Nick and Hank walk out of the room. They joined them and began the walk back to their desks.

"There's no physical evidence to place any of them at the crime scene at the time of the murder," Hank said.

"Do we have any explanation for the shattered glass?" Sean asked.

"Techs are still trying to figure that one out. The best explanation they've come up with so far is a giant microwave. Or a jet flew through the living room." Nick said.

"I vote giant microwave." Paityn joked.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say someone set off a bomb," Hank said.

"So there's no rational explanation then?" Sean sighed.

"Not yet." Paityn sighed.

"Who's winning the lottery on this?" Sean asked, his hands were in his pockets.

"That would be the stepsister," Hank said.

"She was cut out of the will when her father died," Nick stated.

"Do we know why?" Sean asked.

"Bottom line is stepmom likes her daughters best." Nick sighed.

"What do we think about the sisters?" Sean asked.

"Taylor was way too distraught to function. She's out of the question." Paityn stated.

"They're still on the list, however. We're checking alibis." Hank stated.

"This is a politically connected family, the sisters have the money to get the best representation and the D.A. will not prosecute without solid evidence. When you make a move, make sure it's the right one." Sean said. He then left to leave them to their own devices.

Nick's phone dinged and they surrounded his computer for the files that were sent to him.

"Those are the guys from the jewelry robbing," Hank stated. Then Nick pulled up the picture of who was probably Akira. Paityn saw Nick's eyes harden. Paityn would've loved to help Nick but in her state, she was not able to help more than digitally.

Paityn sat at home and called someone she hadn't talked to in quite some time.

"Hello?" They said.

"Hey, I know it's been a while. Wanna catch up over some Coffee or something?" Paityn asked.

"At 9 pm? Isn't coffee bad for the baby?" Pearl asked.

"If it helps I'll drink lemonade or tea." Paityn tried to help.

"Don't gotta tell me twice," Pearl said,

They then met at a local coffee shop. Pearl ordered a hot cocoa and Paityn got a Pomegranate tea. She was not the biggest fan but drank it anyway.

"What's new with you?" Pearl asked, kicking her feet happily while drinking her cocoa.

"Besides the baby being a pain in my uterus, literally, nothing much. We still haven't found Lyra and I've moved in with Sean. Which I'm sure you already knew." Paityn sighed.

"Gotcha. So, what type of wesen are we looking for?" Pearl asked.

"What? How..." Paityn asked.

"You hit me up after weeks of quite literally nothing and at 9 pm no less. There's a Wesen. Tell me." Pearl laughed and suddenly Paityn felt like a bad friend.

"I'm sorry." Paityn apologized. Her eyes watered and Pearl panicked.

"Don't cry! Please don't cry! If you cry I'm gonna start crying and that's not something we want to do right now. Tell me the Wesen Paityn." Pearl had gained the attention of the rest of the coffee shop, which was, admittedly, not a lot of people.

Paityn wiped her eyes and took a deep breath, her pregnancy hormones getting the best of her. "A bat. It looked kinda like a vampire bat had a baby with an old lady." Paityn said.

Pearl started laughing so hard, she couldn't breathe. Paityn looked at her, concerned for a moment before Pearl managed to gain control of her voice again.

"Ah, you must be talking about a Murcielago. They're fun but they're not very common anymore. They can emit a high-pitched screech so loud you can burst your, well, everything." Pearl said.

"So you essentially don't want to piss one off?" Paityn asked.

"Precisely." Pearl chugged the rest of her hot cocoa and threw away the cup.

"How do you fight one of them?" She asked.

"Honestly? No clue. I've never personally met one. I bet your brother would know though." Pearl shrugged.

"Didn't you say they're fun? How can you say they're fun if you've never met one?" Paityn shook her head chuckling.

"From what I've heard they're fun," Pearl said.

"In what way?" Paityn inquired.

"Yes."

"That doesn't help."

Pearl laughed and stood up. "You should get home before Sean thinks you ran away. Also, we need to set up a time for you to come over. I have an idea." Pearl said and patted her shoulder and walked out. Paityn sighed and headed home.

"Paityn I need you to get to the sister's place now. Spencer is on his way now to kill one of the sisters." Nick had called Paityn while she was at the precinct.

"I'm on the way," Paityn said. She practically floored it with a few police cruisers behind her. Hank was in her passenger seat.

"You drive surprisingly calm compared to Nick," Hank said.

"That's because I'm older. He's still secretly in his teenage driving stage." Paityn joked causing Hank to laugh as they neared the house. That's when they saw the car completely destroyed and Nick arresting Spencer. "Holy shit."

They jumped out and Wu grabbed Spencer, bringing him to a cruiser to arrest him. Paityn looked at the body wincing.

"No jet place, no microwave. How'd he do this?" Hank asked.

"I don't know yet," Nick said.

When the crime scene was cleared to go, they headed back to the precinct.

"I'm still upset it wasn't a giant microwave he was carrying around." Paityn joked.

"Or him flying a jet plane right next to the ground." Hank joined.

"Well, Tiffany was killed in the same manner as her mother. Anyone care to explain it?" Sean asked.

"We can't he had no weapon on him." Nick sighed.

"How do we connect him to the first murder?" Sean asked.

"We're hoping that the C.S.U. can connect him using DNA," Hank said.

"I've read the first report. So far there's nothing definitive to connect anybody to the crime." Sean rubbed his forehead stressed.

There was a knocking at the door and they turned around to see Wu. "Sorry to disturb you, but your witness wants to confess. Thought you might want to know." He stated.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, there's our link," Paityn smirked.

"Let's get that confession." Sean shrugged.

The trio walked into the room, Hank leaned on the desk and Nick watched him. Paityn stood by the window with her arms crossed. "I don't see the need to play any games." Spencer started. "I know what you are and I'm guessing you all know what I am." Paityn's heart dropped to the bottom of her feet as she glanced at Hank. He was looking at Nick confused. "It's time to state the obvious. I killed both Mavis and Tiffany."

"Why?" Hank asked. Paityn gave Nick a look that he returned. This guy could've screwed them over really quickly.

"I've been involved in Lucinda's life since the day she was born. I witnessed firsthand how she was treated by her stepmother and her stepsisters. When they turned down her request for help, it was more than I could bear." Spencer explained.

"I understand you were mad. I get that. How'd you kill them?" Hank asked. His voice was soft.

Paityn looked to Nick again and then to Spencer. She tried to give him a look to not say anything. it didn't work of course.

"Well, as you know I have the ability to project a sound so powerful it can shatter glass and burst eardrums," Spencer said. Nick gulped and Paityn contemplated her existence for a moment, to her relief, Hank laughed not believing a thing. "Shouldn't I have a paper and be writing this whole thing down?" He asked. Nick gave Hank a look to go grab the papers.

"You think you can win this by playing the crazy card. That's not gonna work with me." And then Hank left to grab the papers. Nick looked at the door thankful Hank didn't believe him.

"Very clever," Nick said. Paityn and Nick sat down in front of him. "Telling the truth. Now what?"

"I needed to talk to you alone. Now, I did not kill either of them, but I am responsible for their deaths. I failed her father just as much as I failed her. I kept watch on her all those years and made sure that she never lost control. As long as she got everything she wanted, it worked." Spencer explained.

"It never works in the end though Spencer. The moment they want something they can't have, it's game over." Paityn said.

"I know that. She has no conscience. She's uncontrollable and she made their lives miserable." Spencer finished.

"So you're telling me, Lucinda did this?" Paityn asked. Out of everyone, she had expected Arthur to do it. Lucinda was last on her list.

"I'm saying Taylor does not have long left to live. Once she dies, Lucinda inherits everything. You'll never be able to prove that she had anything to do with it. " Spencer said. Nick stood up slowly, realizing what he said.

"Paityn, we have to go. Now." Nick said. Paityn nodded and stood, taking one last glance at Spencer and nodding in thanks. Nick called Monroe and asked him to grab some type of instrument. They went back to their desks to try and convince Hank that it wasn't Spencer.

"I don't think it's him," Nick said.

"No kidding. Just found out that the sisters inherited everything after their mother died. The sisters die, it all goes to Lucinda." Hank smirked.

"Well, we gotta check her out. Let's go." Paityn said. A high-pitched squeal was heard throughout the building causing Paityn to cover her ears, and the baby to kick a little harder than usual, causing her to double over in pain. Glass was heard shattering and Hank helped Paityn up once the noise stopped.

"You okay?" Hank asked.

"Baby is kicking really hard. We gotta get to interrogation." She said. They speed walked over to interrogation where the window was shattered and Spencer was gone.

"No way," Hank said in disbelief.

"Let's go," Nick said. They ran out to the cars in the lot. When they got onto the roads, Nick called Taylor. He let her know to lock all the windows and doors but she hung up when Lucinda started speaking. Paityn winced as the baby kicked decently hard. It was very unhappy about the loud noise it had heard.

"Paityn are you okay?" Nick asked.

"I'm fine. The baby is kicking. They don't like loud noises." Paityn grunted as they parked in front of the house.

"Do you need to stay in here?" Nick asked. He wanted her to say yes because that machine was gonna be loud when she was by it.

"I'm going. If anything gets worse I'll leave immediately. I promise." Paityn said. She intended to keep her promise. Nick nodded, satisfied as they jumped out of the car. Taylor screamed in the background and they rushed to the house.

Hank kicked open the door to see Lucinda holding Taylor's head. She quickly pushed Taylor down and sprinted.

"Watch out, Spencer could be here too," Paityn yelled.

"Got it," Hank said. Nick chased Lucinda while Hank watched over Taylor. Paityn walked back out to try and cut Lucinda off. She met Nick and Monroe in the front of the garage.

"Am I too late?" Monroe asked.

"No. She's in the garage." Paityn panted out of breath, even though she was barely in a jog.

"You guys are also still alive so I can't be late," Monroe said. Nick tried to go into the garage when Monroe stopped him. "Stop! If you can't see her you can't shoot her. You gotta, you know, she'll blow your head up. You gotta force her out." Monroe grabbed a weird instrument from the back of his car and started setting it up.

"What in the hell is that?" Paityn asked.

"It's a long story. The short story is that it's called a Matraca." Nick said. They set it up and Monroe started turning it. The high-pitched noise started happening again and Paityn covered her ears.

The ceramic pots started exploding and the lights shorted and exploded. The windows shattered as Monroe grunted in pain. Things were breaking inside the garage but they couldn't hear anything. When they heard a high-pitched noise again that wasn't from the machine, they stopped. Adrenaline flowed through them and then they heard Spencer scream. That's when they sprinted to the sound.

There, they found Spencer and Lucinda. Lucinda looked like her stepmother and stepsister, her eyes melted and Spencer had a bite in his neck.

"How are you gonna explain this one?" Monroe asked. Paityn felt a sharp pain in her stomach and yelped, collapsing to her knees. Her ears started ringing and she couldn't function. She felt the baby wiggling around frantically. She could feel Nick's arms wrap around her and watched him call an ambulance. Monroe woged in front of her, but he was blurring. He tried saying something to Nick but she couldn't understand it.

Paityn grabbed her stomach, as the pain kept going. The baby was wiggling around too much, and it was killing her. Time passed by in moments. She remembered Nick laying her down softly, his hand behind her head and his other hand holding hers. Flashing lights and then a white roof while the ambulance shook. she could feel the oxygen mask on her face, but couldn't process it.

She saw the hospital hallways and the doctors trying to get an IV in her. Her heart monitor was the only thing she could hear. It was fast. Too fast. As they were getting the tools to check on the baby the baby had calmed down. Paityn felt drained. All the pain had mostly stopped. She heard a singular word.

"Doctor." She managed to look down. They were doing a pelvic exam, she couldn't even tell. She tried to ask what was going on. She looked at who she assumed the doctor was, he carefully placed his hand on her head.

"We'll do everything we can to save you and your baby."

After that, it went black.

Sean paced back and forth in the lobby. his hair was a mess and tears dried on his face. Nick sat with Juliet, his hand in hers tightly. Hank sat next to them as well as Monroe and Pearl. A doctor came out and called Sean's name. Sean ran over as fast as he could.

"Are they okay? Please tell me they're okay." Sean practically whispered. The doctor gave him a small smile.

"They're both stable. Paityn had what we call extreme Braxton Hicks caused by the baby's movement. She's asleep right now, and she's on some pain meds for now. We're gonna keep her overnight for observation but tomorrow, we'll double-check both of them and they should be able to go home." The doctor said. Juliet wept into Nick's shoulder as silent tears strewn down his face. Hank, Monroe, and Pearl sighed in relief and Sean hugged the doctor tightly, confusing the doctor slightly.

Sean let go rather quickly and asked to see her. Monroe and Pearl left, leaving the family members to see her and they'd check in later. Sean saw Paityn in bed, in a hospital gown, and peacefully asleep. Two different heart monitors on her. He could see the baby's heartbeat on the smaller machine. It didn't beep like hers did. Nick ran up to Paityn and hugged her sleeping body.

"Don't you scare me like that again," And he kissed her cheek. Paityn didn't flinch, as she was in a deep sleep.

Nick, Juliet, and Hank talked to her for a while before they left just Sean. He stood there, by the doorway and just stared at her. He didn't know how to feel. Should he feel scared because she just went through something so dangerous? Should he be angry because he wasn't there to protect her? Should he be happy because she was going to be okay and the baby was okay? He didn't know.

He practically collapsed into the chair next to her and held her hand. Her hands were warm, and she slept so peacefully.

"I got you."
