24 Sam, Interrupted!
Glenwood Springs Psychiatric Hospital
Canterbury, Kent
Doctor Aaron Fuller looked at the medical files in front of him- Susan Fletcher, aged 43. Admitted via ER/security.
He flipped the page to a photocopied newspaper excerpt that read 'Young boy dies tragically in early morning house fire'.
He closed the file and looked up at the woman sitting across from him in his office.
"The nurses tell me that you're not taking your medication. You want to tell me why?"
Susan looked up at him, lightly sobbing.
"The pills make me sleepy but I can't. If I sleep it will come".
The doctor sighed.
"You mean the monster? Now we have talked about this-"
"But it killed Annie" Susan pleaded, the doctor grumbling in response.
"Susan you're schizophrenic. Your mind plays tricks on you. You get confused. Sometimes you see things".
"I know what I am" Susan countered. "Like I can see my dead son standing right behind you. I know he's not real"
The doctor instinctively looked over his shoulder. There was of course nothing there.
"But the monster. It is real!"
The doctor sat back in frustration.
"Annie was your roommate. What happened to her was painful... for all of us. Perhaps it's easier for you to conjure up a monster than to face how tragic her suicide really was".
Susan looked at the doctor. She was frustrated... agitated... worked up.
"I can hear it at night, in the walls. Please. You have to believe me".
Fuller leant forward, taking off his glasses.
"Susan. There is no such thing as monsters".
—~—
Susan was in her room. She rubbed her finger on her son's photo. She heard a light thud as the lights turned off.
"10:30 lights out!" She heard an orderly call out.
She sat on her bed, knees to her chest, looking in fear at Annie's empty bed. She gasped as she heard a thump coming from the air conditioner vent. She crawled forward in fear looking up as the screws holding the grate in place started to unscrew.
"Oh my god" she screamed.
—~—
The two night nurses sat at their desk as they heard a woman screaming.
"Oh my god"
"Help me"
"Help me"
Another man yelled out.
"Hey!" "Hey!"
One nurse turned to the other and chuckled.
"They're starting early tonight".
—~—
Susan sat cowering against the wall in fear as one screw dropped. Then another. Then another.
She ran to the Perspex window of her room screaming in terror, banging on it as another patient watched in horror from his room.
"Hurry. It's coming. It's coming. Help me. Help me. Help m-"
She was pulled back violently from the door as the man gasped in horror.
Susan's screams were piercing and guttural.
About five minutes passed. One of the nurses came down as the man stared from his room in horror.
Susan lay dead on the floor, both her wrists sliced open. She had bled out.

Sam looked at Y/N with concern. Hermione had been owling him, the last one arriving with Na-Hath late the previous evening. Y/N had been withdrawn since the attack on Tuesday. He had smiled and put on a brave face for her birthday but Saturday had returned to his withdrawn and quiet behaviour. Hermione had tried. Penny has tried. Even Snape and Albus has tried. No one could get him to open up. Y/N fell into his stoicism and replied with "I'm fine". Hermione was very worried- Sam could tell from the panicked nature of the letter he had received late Saturday evening.
It was now 11:00am Sunday morning. He had convinced Y/N to come on a hunt as soon as they got to Ghoul Studies and, after apparating to Bobby's where they left their stuff, had arrived at the psychiatric facility not long after.
They were now sat in front of one Dr Aaron Muller who was looking over their paperwork.
He looked at the form for one Edward Van Halen and looked up at Y/N concerned. He looked young for 18, but he had a full beard and was the size of a mountain.
"You were referred to me by a Dr Babar in Birmingham?" Dr Muller asked Y/N who sighed and nodded.
"Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?"
Y/N looked at him like he was an idiot.
"I don't know... I don't have any elephant books. Why am I here?" He turned to his older brother, Alex Van Halen, as he finished.
Sam/Alex smiled.
"Look doc I think the doctor was in over his head with this one..." Sam pointing to Y/N... "because my brother's who-hoo" (whistled) and made a circle next to his ear, signifying crazy.
"Okay fine, thank you, that's... that's really not necessary" the doctor quickly interrupted Sam.
"Why don't you tell me how you're feeling Edward?" He asked Y/N.
"I'm fine. Really. I mean I've been a little depressed lately, I guess".
"All right, any idea why?" The doctor asked as he noted.
"Probably because I started the apocalypse" Y/N answered with a straight face.
"The apocalypse?"
"Yeah that's right" Y/N nodded.
The doctor looked at Sam who smiled with a look of resignation.
"And you think you started it?" The doctor asked concerned.
"Well yeah..." Y/N sighed "... I mean when I was sent to wizard prison I killed one of the men who killed my dad. I mean I ripped him to pieces and that was the first seal of Lucifer's cage. This witch named Lilith who's 8000 years old had me sent there. So now we're trying to stop her from opening all the seals and letting Lucifer out".
Y/N finished looking calmly at a very perplexed doctor who looked at Sam who was rolling his eyes in frustration.
"Who's trying to stop it?" The doctor asked.
"Me ... him. Oh and this one angel"
"Oh you mean like an angel on your shoulder" the doctor asked.
"No no. His names Castiel. He wears a trench coat" Y/N explained happily.
"See what I mean doc" Sam spoke up as the doctor nodded.
"I mean the kids been beating himself up for months over this. The apocalypse isn't his fault"
The doctor nodded again before realising what Sam has said.
"It's not?"
"No. He was tricked. I mean if you were in wizard prison with the man who killed your father wouldn't you kill him? I would have done it. He didn't mean to start the apocalypse. He was just enacting his aristocratic vengeance."
"Aristocratic vengeance?" The doctor asked with a raised eyebrow and a stunned expression.
"Yeah he's the Archduke. Of all of Magical Great Britain. He got the family title because he beat me in a duel"
"Kicked your arse" Y/N chuckled.
"So what do you say doc?" Sam continued "How bout you fix him up so we can get back to travelling around the country and killing monsters?"
The doctor smiled and nodded, holding up a finger and picking up his office phone.
"Irma... cancel my lunch"
Sam smiled and nodded to Y/N, patting him on the arm.
—~—
Y/N and Sam were walking down a corridor following a young looking nurse who introduced herself as Nurse Foreman.
"Dr Fuller would like to keep you both in a for a few days for observation" The nurse smiled as she walked ahead of the pair.
"Both... me too?" Sam asked.
"Yes sugar" the nurse said happily. "The doctor thinks that would be best"
Sam turned to Y/N and smiled.
—~—
Y/N was sat on a chair with the nurse. She was taking his blood pressure as he looked at the device puzzled.
"Alright I'm just going to give you a little check up." She smiled.
Y/N narrowed his eyes at her.
"Alright look nurse Ratchet. My girlfriend showed me One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest so I know all about your muggle crazy wards. Don't try any of that soul crushing authoritarian crap on me, okay!"
The nurse smiled wider, replying:
"Okey dokie"
"Hmm" Y/N nodded.
—~—
The nurse removed the blood pressure machine from Sam, who was now in the room.
"Alright you can go ahead and take down your pants"
Sam looked up shocked.
"Wait uh um what?" He stammered.
The nurse thwacked a glove and smiled, Sam returning one that was much more uncomfortable.
—~—
Y/N was leaning on a couch in a gown and hospital duds. They came with matching slippers. He was looking very uncomfortable.
Sam walked up looking on edge.
"How was your Silkwood shower?" Y/N asked.
"Okay" Sam answered. "Yeah Good Yeah good.. um.. Good water pressure. Did the nurse-?"
"She was very thorough" Y/N answered.
"Yeah. Yeah good. Good. Yeah. Ahem" Sam replied.
Y/N looked around the common room. One man was sleeping on a table on top of dominoes. A lady was reading a pop up book. Another was nursing a stuffed teddy like it was a real baby.
"I can't believe I let you talk me into this" he said gruffly.
"Hey it's the least we could do. Martin's an old hunting friend of your Dad's" Sam replied. "He's a great hunter".
"Was. Until Glasgow" Y/N snapped.
"Besides I just figured it's best you keep busy. Better than-" he stopped himself.
"Better than what?" Y/N asked, affronted.
"Nothing" Sam replied. Y/N looked at him with his 'don't bullshit me' expression.
"Okay look. The last week you've been worrying everyone"
"Who?"
"Hermione. Penny. Albus. Severus. Dean. Me. What happened to Garth and the others wasn't your fault Y/N"
"Oh come on Sam stop" Y/N rolled his eyes and huffed.
"Just because we're in the loony bin doesn't give you the right to headshrink me"
"Y/N-" Sam started before he was cut off.
"My Bearers dying was a tragedy. But it's on me and I will deal with it!"
"Y/N you always do this!" Sam said a bit firmer. "You can't just keep this crap in"
Y/N chuckled. "Watch me"
He turned his head. "Oh there he is"
He walked off towards a balding man sitting alone. He was staring out the window.
Sam cleared his throat and the man turned. A look of realisation and then happiness crossed his face as he shot up.
"Boys. Sam I haven't seen you in... and Y/N my god you were a baby when I last saw you. Merlin you look like Thomas."
"Thanks" Y/N said nodding.
"Uh... well thanks for coming" Martin replied, motioning them to sit.
"In the old days I could have dealt with this thing with both arms tied behind my back but well... now..."
He looked down saddened.
"What do you think it is we're hunting?" Sam asked.
"I don't know yet" Martin replied. "A ghost, demon, monster, animal, vegetable, mineral" he chuckled nervously before turning serious.
"Hospital's had five deaths in the last four months. Doctors keep calling it suicides but they're wrong" Martin said as he looked at the guys with sincerity.
"So you've seen this thing?" Sam asked, Martin looked down and shook his head.
"Has anyone seen this thing?" Y/N added.
"Well, a couple of patients had glimpses but there's not a lot to go on".
"Are they reliable?" Y/N asked skeptically.
"Oh sure, why wouldn't they be?" Martin asked, almost insulted. Y/N turned and looked around the ward. A woman was humming, dancing with an imaginary partner three feet from them as he turned back to face Martin.
"Gee, I don't know".
"I know you boys think I'm a bag of loose screws" Martin said pointing his finger. "Well you wouldn't be wrong. But I wouldn't have called you unless there was something here. I can feel it in my gut".
"We believe you Martin" Sam said reassuringly. "Have you checked any of the bodies? Found signs of an attack?"
Martin turned into a stuttering bag of nerves.
"Well uh- no I don't um I don't go near dead bod- dead bod- dead bod...ies anymore".
Y/N looked at his reaction with concern before hearing a voice behind them. It was Dr Fuller.
"Alex, Eddie. I'm glad to see you're making friends" he smiled. "Why don't you and Mr. Creaser join us for group?"
He looked at Sam as he asked. The three stood before he held a hand to Y/N.
"I've scheduled you in for the later group" he said to Y/N firmly.
"What? Why?" Y/N asked.
"Well to be frank, the relationship you have with your brother... it seems dangerously codependent".
Y/N looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
"I think a little time apart will do you both good"
He turned to see Sam look puzzled as well. Y/N waved goodbye awkwardly as he was left alone.
—~—
Sam and Martin were sat in a circle with Dr Fuller and five other patients.
"All right so who would like to start?" The doctor asked.
One man raised his hand high, awkwardly, desperate to talk. The doctor looked around.
"Anyone else?"
"Mm-mmm-mm" The man hummed as he was practically jumping out of his chair.
The doctor sighed.
"Alright Ted. Calm down"
"I am calm" Ted answered. "And I would very calmly like to talk about the monster that's hunting us".
Sam and Martin glanced at each other as the doctor spoke firmly.
"Ted, we're not going to have that discussion again" the doctor replied, glancing at Sam.
"It's not good for group".
"I agree. You know what else isn't good for group? A monster eating all our faces off"
"All right, fine, thank you" Fuller answered snarkily. "Now anyone else?"
"I saw it kill Susan!" Ted interrupted loudly.
"I did too. It had big lobster claws" another patient, a blonde woman, said excitedly.
"What? No it didn't" Ted snapped.
"Yeah and it was an alien, like from Roswell" she continued.
"Stop it. You're not helping" Ted said now in a full panic. "Listen to me. We're all dead"
"That's enough!" Doctor Fuller snapped. He glared at Ted, leaning forward and taking off his glasses. Sam looked at the doctor who sat menacingly and narrowed his eyes.
"There is no monster" Fuller said as he glared. "Now Ted do you need me to call the orderlies?"
Ted shook his head.
"Or can you behave?"
Ted nodded.
"Behave".
Sam and Martin exchanged worried glances.
—~—
Y/N was sat at a table, by himself, playing Chequers, by himself. He took four blacks and laughed:
"King me. Haha!"
"Eddie?" A woman said next to him. Y/N looked up to see a woman in a white coat smiling at him. He wasn't sure why but she reminded him of his great great great etc grandmother, Kassandra.
"I'm Dr. Erica Cartwright. I've been assigned your case" she smiled.
"You're my shrink?" Y/N chuckled. "Lucky me"
Her smile turned to a smirk as she shot back:
"And you're my paranoid schizophrenic with narcissistic personality disorder and religious psychosis. Lucky me."
"I only know what three of those words mean" he answered.
"Can we talk?" She asked smiling as she took a seat.
"Yeah. I've got some questions for you actually".
"Funny I've got some questions for you" She replied.
"Well. Quid pro quo Clarice. Thck thck thck"
Y/N did his best Hannibal impression. Erica was not impressed.
"Sorry. Watched that with my girlfriend a while back".
"Okay Hannibal I'll go first. How many hours a night have you slept in the last week?"
"Maybe... one?" Y/N answered before asking.
"What can you tell me about the recent suicides?"
"They were tragic" she answered sadly.
"But you haven't noticed anything strange? Like black smoke, sulphur?"
"No why? What's that supposed to mean?"
"Demon signs. I hunt demons, monsters, that kind of thing" Y/N chuckled.
"How many drinks have you had in the last week?"
"Well I couldn't sleep so what's seven days times.... mid fifties?"
He had been drinking scotch while Hermione slept so he wasn't lying.
"You ever feel any cold spots or get a chill walking through the hospital?" He shot back.
"Not that I can remember. If I had?"
"There's a ghost around. Vengeful spirit typically. Normal happy ghosts don't affect temperature".
"Okay. You mentioned a girlfriend. When was the last time you were in a long term relationship?"
"Still am. Hermione. Coming up two years. God she's so far out of my league I've still got no idea how I nabbed her. Probably been a bit distant the last week. I'll have to make it up to her when I gank whatever's in here and get out" Y/N answered but was looking off, deep in thought. He quickly replied:
"Have the patients reported seeing anything weird?"
"In here? Heh all the time" the doc laughed.
"Right" Y/N said as he considered what it could be.
"So... let's talk about your mother" the doctor said leaning forward.
—~—
Y/N was walking down a corridor, hands in his pockets, looking downwards. He looked behind him, a strange feeling of unease passing over him. He shrugged and looked forward again.
"Y/N hey." Sam said, emerging from a room.
"You Okay?" Sam asked, noticing the look on Y/N's face.
"I just got thraped..." Y/N answered.
Sam looked puzzled then freaked out as he caught on.
"... so no I am not okay. Tell me you found something".
"Yeah, a guy says he saw the creature. We should talk to him. Wanna meet here in an hour?"
"Yeah. Sooner we take care of this thing the sooner we can get gone. Place gives me the creeps" Y/N said turning round. "I need a shower".
He stopped suddenly as a beautiful woman stood in front of him.
She looked in her early twenties. She put her hand behind his head as he looked puzzled before she leant in for a kiss. He turned his head at the last moment. She landed on his cheek.
"I have a girlfriend" he said uncomfortably.
The woman stopped attempting to French kiss his cheek and chuckled.
"Is she here? I'm Wendy" she said before slapping him on the backside and walking off smiling.
Y/N sighed.
"Now I need two showers".
—~—
Sam, who had left his wand at Bobby's picked the lock of his room and exited as the building was dark. It was past lights out. He was holding a small metal instrument he had stolen and used to pick the lock.
"It's about time" Y/N answered, waiting in the hall. His wands were still on his arms hidden but his moke pouch was at Bobby's. He felt naked without it.
"Nurses are on their rounds. Got 15, 20 minutes" he added as he looked at the object Sam was holding. "Where is this guy?"
"Room 306" Sam said pointing as they walked in that direction. As they walked round the corner they heard Ted screaming and started running.
Y/N looked in the Perspex whole as Sam fiddled with the lock, Ted's feet kicking the window as he screamed.
"GET OUT THE WAY" Y/N bellowed.
"BACK OFF Y/N" Sam yelled back.
They looked at each other angrily as Sam got the lock and they opened the door. Ted was hanging from a pipe that ran across his ceiling. A sheet was round his throat. He was gone.
—~—
Sam and Y/N were in the morgue, having snuck in while no one was looking. Y/N opened a cold locker and rolled the slab out. He opened the body bag and it was definitely Ted's corpse.
Sam looked over Ted's head while Y/N was examining his hands, under his nails. There was nothing to identify what had attacked him.
"I've found something" Sam said, feeling around Ted's neck.
"What have you got?" Y/N asked.
"Right here" Sam replied, turning Ted's head.
"Is that a hole?" Y/N asked.
"Yep and..." Sam picked up a q-tip and placed it in. It went deeper and deeper and deeper.
"...Y/N this goes all the way to his brain" Sam exclaimed in shock.
"What does that mean?" Y/N asked. He unsheathed his wand.
Perspicio Röntgen
The X-ray spell unfortunately showed the bones of an individual, but that was its limits.
"Shit, that just shows his skull" Y/N muttered.
Sam looked across at the electronic oscillating saw on a table not far from them.
"When in Rome" he smirked at Y/N.
"Seriously?" Y/N asked.
"Yeah keep watch" Sam answered as he picked the saw up.
—~—
Y/N was outside the morgue, keeping watch as the saw could be heard whirring through Ted's skull.
Sam placed it down with bloody gloves on as he removed the top of Ted's head. He placed it down and looked inside, shocked.
He reached in and pulled out a small shrivelled blackened brain.
"What the fuck?"
Y/N heard a door open down the hall and rushed back inside.
"Dude-"
"Look his brains been sucked dry!" Sam interrupted, waving the thing around.
"Fascinating. Put it back, someone's coming!"
The two quickly replaced the brain and the top of Ted's head, closed the body bag and cold locker door and Sam threw the gloves in the bin just as Nurse Foreman walked in the morgue door with a clipboard.
She looked at the two hunters in shock as they stood there resembling guilty schoolchildren.
"What are you boys doing in here?" She asked in surprised.
Sam pointed and chuckled nervously before Y/N got a goofy look on his face. In an instant he dropped his pants, threw his hands in the air and jiggled, yelling:
"PUDDING!"
Nurse Foreman's eyes widened before she smirked and looked away.
"All right, come on you two" she said still looking away smirking and opened the morgue door.
Y/N quickly pulled up his pants and whispered to Sam:
"Crazy works"
He walked passed the nurse who chuckled as Sam followed with his head down.
—~—
Y/N and Sam were stood in the common room, looking at a board on the wall with Martin. It was full of drawings of sad clowns.
"What are those, original Gacys?" Y/N chuckled.
"I painted those" Martin exclaimed, looking offended.
Y/N stared at him blankly, unable to think what to say.
"Back on point please" Sam said sternly.
"What ever this thing is-"
"They're good" Y/N whispered to Martin.
"... it slurpees your brain, sucks you dry" Sam finished.
"Yeah then it makes the deaths look like suicides" Y/N added. "Any ideas?"
Martin looked down stunned.
"Yeah.... a bad one"
—~—
The boys were looking at a picture Martin quickly drew.
"What is it?" Y/N asked.
"I bet you a chicken dinner this is what we're up against. This it's ancient... really ancient. Like First Age ancient. A Wraith" Martin eventually stammered out.
Y/N raised an eyebrow.
"Sam you said wraiths are like revenants"
Sam was stunned.
"They are... I mean"
"They are now, or at least we call a type of spirit a wraith" Martin interrupted. "But in the First Age... it's a monster. They crack open skulls and feed on brain juice".
"You ever tangle with one before?" Sam asked.
"Never. Thought they were extinct. Never wanted to meet one either" Martin replied.
"So how do you kill it?" Y/N asked, already feeling conflicted. This was a monster. A murderous, brain drinking, belly to the floor cockroach. It was also a Legendary Creature.
"Silver. You so much as touch a Wraith with the stuff their skin will crackle. That's the good news!"
"And the bad news?" Y/N asked.
"The bad news is they can pass as humans" Martin replied as he looked around fearfully.
"It could be any Peter, Paul or Mary in the joint".
"Fantastic. So how do we find it?" Y/N asked.
"A mirror" Martin answered, nervously playing with his hands. "Lore says a Wraith will show it's true form in a mirror".
Y/N looked at Sam.
"Ok so we just gotta spot check every patient and staff member in the place"
"Okay, Yeah" Sam nodded. "But I mean... what's it doing in a mental hospital?" He asked puzzled.
"A nuthouse Sam, its a perfect captive victim pool" Y/N answered.
"Sure. Who's gonna believe a patient when they say they saw a monster? It's the perfect hunting ground" Martin added.
—~—
Y/N was stood in a corridor near the ward office, looking up in a mirror as patients and staff walked passed. His arms were crossed on his chest. Erica walked up and smiled, standing next to him.
"What's up doc?" Y/N asked.
"You tell me"
Y/N smirked back.
"Hunting. A Wraith actually. Could be anybody"
"So... I could be a monster?" She asked looking him dead in the eyes.
Y/N turned his head and looked up at her reflection in the mirror.
"No you're clean" he answered as she looked up, looking back at his reflection.
"Why you?"
"Why me what?" Y/N asked as they kept eye contact in the mirror.
"Why do you have to hunt monsters? Why not let someone else do it?"
Y/N looked stunned for a moment before chuckling.
"Can't find anyone else that dumb"
He looked up in the mirror as she gazed at him. He sighed:
"It's my job. Somebody's gotta save people's arses. Yours included"
"So is there a quota? How many people do you have to save?"
Y/N looked at the doctor, making prolonged eye contact before answering.
"All of them"
Erica's mouth dropped.
"All of them? You think you have to save everyone?"
"Yep. Whole wide world of sports".
"How?"
Y/N looked at the doctor as his face hardened. The doctor tilted her head and smiled sweetly.
"Believe me whatever you've got, I've heard weirder".
Y/N looked at her for a moment.
"It's the end of the world, okay? I mean it's the damn biblical apocalypse. And if I don't stop it and save everyone then no one will and we all die. I started it. Only I can stop it. It has to be me!"
His voice had hardened by the time he finished before he looked away, back into the mirror. The doctor looked at him with sympathy.
"That's horrible"
"Yeah well, tell me about it".
"I mean apocalypse or no apocalypse. Monsters or no monsters. That's a crushing weight to carry around on your shoulders. To feel like six billion lives depend on you..."
Y/N looked down, trying his best to maintain his stoic facade.
"God... how do you get up in the morning?"
He was silent for a while before he whispered.
"Hermione. As long as I have her I'm fine. Everything is for her".
The doctor smiled and rubbed his arm. Y/N looked down in thought before Doctor Fuller walked past smiling.
"Hello Eddie"
Y/N looked up and glanced at the mirror.
"Doc" before his eyes widened. Doctor Fuller was the Wraith. He turned after him quickly but the doctor had already walked through a door that locked behind him.
—~—
It was nighttime, almost lights out. Sam walked up to Y/N and Martin in a corridor as Martin looked around nervously.
"Alright I had to raid two nurses stations to get these. They're only silver plated but they should work" Sam said as he handed a silver plated knife to Martin.
"Doesn't Y/N need one?" Martin asked.
"No I have this" Y/N smirked holding up his arm as his blade slowly descended. Martin flipped as Sam threw a hand over his mouth.
"It's an Angel Blade. It can kill anything. Relax" Sam whispered firmly.
Martin nodded and Sam released him as Wendy walked up smiling.
"Oh no no no not again I told you-"
Y/N was cut off as she pushed him aside and agressively pulled Sam down for a kiss. Sam went wide eyed and tried to pull
her off as she turned to Y/N with a smirk.
"I want him now. He doesn't have a beard"
She sauntered off as Y/N chuckled.
"Thanks for taking one for the team Sammy. You've had worse"
Sam glared before changing the subject.
"Fuller is on call tonight so we'll have to hit him after lights out. All three of us"
Martin looked up horrified.
"What? No?"
"Martin we gotta get past the security, passed the orderlies and then cut the boss man's throat. It's gonna suck start to finish but we could use the backup" Y/N answered him calmly.
"Oh I can't. I can't" Martin said shaking his head, starting to walk off.
"We know what happened in Glasgow" Sam spoke up firmly. Martin stopped in his tracks.
"You don't know the half of it".
He turned around to face them slowly.
"Merlin, I used to be just like you two. I used to think I was invincible, and then.... well I found out I'm not".
"Martin, you are still a hunter!" Y/N answered staunchly.
"No. I'm not. I'm useless. Why do you think I checked myself into the Hotel California? And a muggle one at that. I had to forget all about hunting and magic and everything. I'd give anything to help you boys. I would. But I-I can't. I'm sorry I can't".
He walked away quickly with his head down. Sam looked at him with sympathy. Y/N looked at him with anger.
—~—
Y/N and Sam burst into Doctor Fuller's office. It was empty but Y/N picked up his car keys off his desk.
"He's still in the building. You take the west wing. I'll take the east".
Sam nodded as the two separated.
—~—
Sam walked through a deserted corridor, the silver 'blade' in his hand. He looked round a corner to see Doctor Fuller coming towards him. He laid in wait.
As the doctor walked round the corner he lifted the blade high before coming down hard. The doctor raised his forearm in time and was sliced open, screaming in pain.
Two orderlies ran out of an office to save the doctor, grabbing Sam. They managed to get hold of an arm each and started to drag him away. He threw the first one off and punched the other hard in the face. He turned as the first charged, punching him in the stomach and throwing him face first though a window. He turned as he second got up and punched him twice, knocking him out.
The doctor looked at him in horror, holding his bleeding arm, and ran. Sam looked at him with murder in his eyes. He picked up the blade and chased. He had to finish the job. He rugby tackled the man to the ground and roared as he raised the blade, ready to strike down.
"Wait stop" Martin yelled, grabbing Sam's arm at the last moment.
"Stop. Look at his arm. The cuts not burning. It's not him. It's not him".
Sam dropped the blade and let go of the doctor, looking at him in shock. The doctor looked up terrified.
—~—
Sam was sat on his bed, looking up at the ceiling as his room door opened. Y/N walked in.
"You okay?" Y/N whispered.
"No. No I'm not okay."
"I am awwwweessome" Sam smiled goofily.
Y/N looked at him unimpressed.
"They give you something?"
"They gave me.... everything" Sam giggled. "It's spectaculacular"
Y/N rolled his eyes and chuckled:
"Yeah you always were a happy drunk"
Sam looked around puzzled before pulling Y/N down close to him.
"Y/N, the doctor wasn't a Wraith"
"I know" Y/N nodded "I don't understand it I mean I saw it in the mirror. It wasn't human".
Sam looked at him wide eyed.
"Or your seeing things. Mayb-mayb-mayb- Maybe you're going crazy?"
Y/N huffed.
"I'm not crazy"
Sam laughed
"I mean come on, you've been at least half crazy for a long time and that was before our friends died. I mean we're in a mental hospital hahaha.... maybe you've finally cracked. You know maybe now you are really for real crazy".
Y/N's face and voice hardened.
"I made a mistake. That's all. I'll find the thing".
Sam nodded with a look of sincerity and squeezed Y/N's arm. Y/N looking down at it.
"Okay. Yeah yeah. I know. I know. It's okay. Hey hey look at me".
Y/N looked back up.
"It's okay. Because you're my brother... and I love you!"
He then booped Y/N on the nose and giggled like a child.
"Fuck me" Y/N whispered as he stepped out of the room and closed the door. He was pissed. He didn't make mistakes. Not like that. He stalked the corridor. He suddenly felt off though, like the walls were closing in, there was someone behind him. He was turning around constantly seeing if he was being followed. Jacob and Moody were screaming in his head:
Constant vigilance! Constant vigilance! Constant vigilance!
He jumped as Erica walked out from around the corner.
"You missed our session today" she said as they walked.
"A little busy"
"Still hunting that Wraith?"
"People are dying!" Y/N snapped back.
"People die all the time" she said as they passed an orderly in the hall.
"Look lady why don't you let me do my job, maybe save your life?"
She stopped.
"It's not my life that I'm worried about!"
"OH MY- I am fine okay! I'm fine!"
Y/N had started to yell but stopped himself. The orderly looked at him but went back to sorting files.
"Come on. Even you don't believe that" Erica said dismissively before continuing.
"All this pressure that your putting yourself under. This guilt. It's killing you. You can't save everybody. You can't!"
Her face turned nasty.
"Hell these days you can't save anybody Y/N!"
Y/N's eyes opened. She didn't call him Eddie.
"What did you say?"
"The truth Y/N. You got Garth and the others killed. You said you would protect Anna but you sold her out. You couldn't get Ruby out of Hell and, oh yeah, you broke the first seal. All you do is fail!"
She glared at him sadistically as he looked at her alarmed.
"Did you really think that you Y/N L/N with a third year Hogwarts education and a give em hell attitude were gonna beat Voldemort? Please. The world is gonna burn and there is noth-ing you can do about it!"
Y/N's face turned nasty. Angry.
"Who are you? How do you know that stuff?" His voice raised as he got angrier and angrier.
"Hey settle down" The orderly called.
"TELL ME!" Y/N bellowed.
The orderly started to approach.
"I said settle down"
"Who are you?" He whispered to Erica who smirked at him arrogantly.
"Who is she?" Y/N asked the orderly as he pointed to Erica.
"Who?" The orderly asked in a tone that said he didn't get paid enough.
"What are you blind? Her!" Y/N snapped at the man like he was an idiot.
"Pal. There's nobody there".
Y/N looked at him, then at Erica confused as she held her arrogant smirk.
"I'm not real Y/N" she smirked. "I'm in your head.... because you are going crazy".
Y/N looked around fearful as she was just gone.
"Just leave me alone" he said to the orderly as he turned and looked around.
He saw people looking at him. Patients, orderlies, nurse Foreman. He looked up in a mirror. Everyone of them was a Wraith.
He tried to get into some rooms that were all locked before he slid back in the corner, all he could hear in his head was ghostly echoes, screaming. He held his head in his hands.
—~—
Sam was looking out the window. He heard a knock and the door open. It was Doctor Fuller. He was pissed. Sam stood up and looked at him with guilt.
"You asked to see me?" The doctor asked coldly. An orderly stood behind him, arms crossed, glaring.
"Yeah Thanks. I um- I just wanted to apologise. I feel horrible about what I did to you. I thought you were a monster".
"I know that" the doctor nodded. "The question is why?"
"I was- it doesn't matter. Um. Because after what happened last night I had a moment of clarity. I realised there's no such thing as monsters".
"Well I'm glad to hear you say that" the doctor said taking a step forward.
"But honestly, monsters are the least of your problems" the doctor sighed as Sam looked at him confused. The doctor explained with the tone of a disappointed parent:
"People can learn to live with delusions but the anger I saw in you... you hurt those two men and you were going to kill me. The look in your eyes when you came after me, I- it was like you were barely even human. Like a man possessed."
Sam nodded.
"I know. Please. Can you give me a second chance?"
The doctor's gaze softened.
"Well. This isn't a prison. You'll be allowed to go to day room. Under supervision"
"Thank you" Sam nodded.
"But if there is one more outburst... I will transfer you to a facility that is equipped to handle violent patients and believe me they will be far, far less forgiving".
Sam nodded and looked down.
—~—
Sam walked out followed by the orderly. Y/N was sat at a table in the middle of the room. He looked up at Sam with a fearful expression on his face.
"Y/N Hey. What's wrong?"
Y/N stood.
"It wasn't my fault Sam. It was yours. I failed them because you failed me. You were supposed to teach me. For my dad. You failed me Sam!"
Sam looked shocked at his young friend. How could he think that. He turned and noticed he was surrounded by patients.
"Now we're all gonna die because of you!" One of them sneered.
"It's all your fault"
"You killed us all"
One man shoved him hard.
"You son of a bitch" another yelled.
"Hey back off!" Sam yelled as they started to pull, push, tear at him. He punched one. Then another. Then another. They kept coming.
—~—
Y/N sat at a table in the corner. All he could see was Wraiths on every face. Not even in the mirror. They were everywhere. He glanced over and saw Sam punching and screaming at nobody as the orderlies rushed him.
"What is this? What's happening?" Y/N asked himself as he tried to think through the haunting screams in his head.
—~—
Martin was laying moaning in his sleep before he woke. He heard his door open and shot up with the silver blade. Y/N cowered back.
"Martin! Martin! It's me.. it's Y/N" Y/N said fearfully.
Martin held the blade up pointing at Y/N, his mouth and eyes wide open.
"Oh sorry son"
Y/N leant down, hand across his face.
"You look like hell boy"
"I-I feel like it too"
"Where's Sam?"
"Lockdown. He went crazy. Thank Merlin" Y/N sighed in relief.
"What?" Martin asked, stunned at Y/N's words.
"I'm going crazy too!" Y/N replied.
Martin looked at him panicked.
"I'm seeing things. I'm hearing things. We both are..." he pointed at Martin, looking quite deranged. "...crazy is the clue."
"What do you mean?" Martin asked as Y/N looked up like he was listening to invisible voices.
Martin snapped his fingers "Y/N!"
"Crazy is the clue!"
"You said that. What?"
"I mean the things that me and Sam have done.... the uh uh things that we have seen, we're gonna end up going guano eventually. Probably end up like a couple of drooling nut bags" Y/N chuckled before looking straight at Martin. "No offence"
"None taken"
"But me and him freaking out on the same day? I mean it's gotta be-"
"The monster" Martin whispered.
"WHERE????" Y/N yelled, jumping a mile and turning.
"Not- no there's nothing there" Martin whispered.
"Okay..." Y/N composed himself "... what if this thing doesn't just feed on the insane? What if it makes people insane? Is that possible? Does that seem real?" Y/N finished by asking.
"Well... I'm not the most reliable source on what's real, but it sounds... it makes sense" Martin nodded.
"Okay okay" Y/N nodded. "Okay so we got infected. Something shot us up with crazy, you know something... maybe...."
Y/N went wider eyed.
"Maybe it's the ghost of my Dad?"
"No" Martin said calmly. Even as he was, a nervous wreck, his memories of Thomas shone through. A brave, strong, selfless man. A man Martin looked up to. He spoke to Y/N calmingly. "Focus on the Wraith Y/N"
"Right right right the Wraith the Wraith so the Wraith it poisoned us yeah maybe with venom? You know? By touch or venom or saliva-"
Y/N stopped stammering.
"Wendy"
"Wendy?" Martin asked
"Wendy! Wendy slobbered all over me and Sam. That's how we got infected!"
—~—
Y/N and Martin were walking down the hall. Well Martin was walking. Y/N was doing strange double or triple steps. Martin watched him puzzled for a few moments, asking:
"Y/N?"
"I-I-I- can't step on the cracks" Y/N said apologetically.
They stopped as they heard a woman scream. They ran.
Y/N kicked the door to Wendy's room in and gasped. Wendy was laying there with her wrists sliced open. Nurse Foreman was sitting on her bed, a bone appendage coming out of her wrist, directly into Wendy's neck. The same place that Ted's had been.
Y/N looked up in the mirror and gasped as she had a Wraith face.
"Is this real? Is this real?"
The nurse smiled sweetly, withdrawing the bone appendage and licking it.
"Oh it is sugar. It's very real!"
The nurse shot up, punching Y/N in the face. Martin went to stab her but she knocked him back. She turned back to Y/N who unsheathed his blade and slashed. He sliced across her hand and she screamed in agony, throwing him to the floor as she bolted, slamming the door behind her.
"Two patients are in Wendy's room. They attacked me" she called out as two orderlies ran out from the break room.
Martin rushed to Wendy. Her eyes fluttered.
"She's still alive Y/N. Can you hear me? You've gotta get out there and kill that thing. I'll take care of her" Martin spoke as he wrapped Wendy's wrists. The two orderlies came in and Martin rushed them.
"Go Y/N go!"
Y/N pushed himself up and towards the direction the nurse fled. His vision was blurry, every step was harder. He held himself up by the wall and noticed a trail of blood on the floor. He followed it.
—~—
Sam was laying strapped to a bed. The door opened.
"Hey let me go" he yelled at the nurse.
"No you are far too angry to be out there in the real world" Nurse Foreman smiled. Sam looked up at the mirror in his room in horror.
"You!"
"Of course it's me. I gotta say you hunters don't exactly live up to your rep. I mean Martin's a wreck. He's harmless. And you and your pretend brother come in here talking tough about killing monsters. Kind of made you easy to spot. Then all it took was a touch..." she grinned cheekily.
Sam thought back- the examination.
"... and I knew everything about both of you. You were mine"
"Oh I love it in here" she rushed over and wiped a finger on Sam's forehead, licking it.
"This place is my own personal five star restaurant. Crazy brains. They get soaked in dopamine and adrenaline and all sorts of hormones and chemicals that make them delicious" she smiled, licking again.
"And the crazier they are, the better they taste"
"You did this to me!" Sam roared.
"Yep" she smirked as she sat. "Gave you a taste of the rage that's in Y/N. Gave him a taste of the fear that's in his victims"
She giggled as her appendage burst out of her wrist. She was about to plunge it into Sam's neck when the door shot open.
"You get away from him" Y/N said as he wobbled to full height. The Wraith stood up and chuckled.
"Do you really think this is gonna end well for you kiddo?"
"No. But I'm crazy... so what the hell" Y/N chuckled as he tried to focus.
The Wraith rushed him and punched Y/N into the wall. She grabbed him round the throat, his vision getting more blurrier as he saw her appendage coming straight towards his face. He let go of the hand round his throat and grabbed it, using all his strength to snap the bone in two.
The Wraith screamed in agony as Y/N stumbled and with one last flurry unsheathed his blade as he swung.
The Angel Blade connected with the Wraith's chest as her eyes and mouth flashed brilliantly before she dropped to the floor. Y/N resheathed his blade as his head was instantly cleared. The poison was gone.
He unsheathed his wand and nonverbally untied Sam, grabbing his chest as he apparated them back to Bobby's.
—~—
Y/N and Sam were sat in Bobby's study, having changed into normal clothes.
"11:00pm Wednesday. You mind if I use your spare room Bobby?" Y/N asked.
"No worries kid. Have fun" Bobby chuckled.
"See you on Sunday Sam" Y/N smirked. He turned to leave the room as he finished his beer and Sam called out "Y/N wait-"
"I'll write a scroll on the Wraith Sam, but I don't ever want to talk about that hunt again. If you need me you know where to find me Sammy. Just no muggle psych wards" he chuckled as he left.
Sam nodded and Y/N walked upstairs before time-turning back to 1pm Sunday and apparating to the Ghoul Studies classroom.
He summoned Na-Hath who flew in and perched on the desk in front of him and squawked.
"Thanks Na-Hath. I feel like shit" Y/N chuckled as he stroked his beloved Phoenix.
He jotted down a quick note.
Baby. It's was a LONNGGGG Ghoul Studies session. Going up to dorm for a shower. Send a note with Na-Hath telling me where you'll be and I'll meet you there. Love you. Missed you. Y/N
He attached it to Na-Hath's leg.
"Can you please return to my dorm with the reply Na-Hath? I need to go for a shower" Y/N smiled as Na-Hath squawked again.
"Yes I realise I stink. Thanks mate" Y/N chuckled as the Phoenix flew out with the note.
