43 Third Year Selections

The next week flew past quickly. Most days were spent in the library, where Y/N would read book after book about his newly discovered abilities, the history of the Global Wizarding War and any scrap of information he could find on Gellert Grindelwald.

Night times were spent together in the Room of Requirement, where many a heated make out session was had.

Friday morning Y/N and Hermione were sat at breakfast with their friends when Professor McGonagall approached them. She had a big smile on her face as she approached the young couple.

"Mr L/N, Ms. Granger, could the two of you please meet me in my classroom after breakfast, about 9:30?"

The two nodded and smiled as she walked off.

"Wonder what that was about?" Harry asked Y/N. Y/N shrugged nonchalantly.

"Aren't you worried love?" Hermione asked with concerned eyes.

"No babe" Y/N chuckled. "I've been chewed out before by McGonagall, a few times, and that definitely wasn't her 'I'm gonna chew you out face' so don't stress."

He smiled as his girlfriend became more relaxed in front of his eyes. Lavender rolled her eyes with a chuckle.

"Maybe it's because you haven't been sleeping in your bed Y/N?" Ron asked loudly

Y/N shushed him and kicked him hard under the table. Bloody idiot. He had absolutely no filter or concept of an inside voice.

"Wait what?" Lavender asked excitedly. She leant into Hermione and whispered:

"I thought you were sleeping in Y/N's dorm when you weren't in ours love?"

A panicked look grew on Hermione's face. Y/N quickly jumped in.

"We have a special secret place where we go. After everything we just wanted to be alone and together. It's an amazing feeling falling asleep in each other's arms and waking up next to each other."

Hermione smiled brightly and nodded, leaning up into Y/N and kissing him on the lips. Y/N smiled widely, whispered "one more" and after Hermione had giggled and granted his request he turned to look at Ron.

Within a space of a microsecond he had turned from sweet loving Y/N to seriously intimidating and angry Y/N. He growled, looking into Ron's eyes:

"And none of you will mention it. To anyone!"

Ron gulped, Harry nodded. Lavender chuckled and agreed.

The young couple finished their breakfast and walked to McGonagall's office, hand in hand, fingers interlocked, laughing and smiling together as always. Both of them had huge smiles on their faces. Just being with each other, after the stress of the past nine months, felt like some sort of immense relief. Hermione had never seen Y/N smile as much as he had the last week and a half. She felt good inside to be the reason why.

They arrived at the classroom and were asked to sit at the large classroom desk with McGonagall.

"Thank you both for coming. Do you know why you're here?"

Hermione shook her head. Y/N smirked and answered: "For once I've got nothing sneaky going on on the side so I genuinely have no clue why you called me here."

Hermione's eyes went wide as she turned to look at her boyfriend. McGonagall narrowed her eyes before shocking Hermione by chuckling.

"You always make me laugh Y/N. Probably not for the best reasons, but still it's endearing."

Hermione couldn't help but roll her eyes at Y/N. He was an idiot, but once again he was her idiot.

"We are here to discuss both your classes for next year. We weren't able to have this discussion earlier in the year, for obvious reasons" McGonagall said sadly.

"Yeah petrification will make conversation a bit one sided" Hermione said with a giggle. She glanced at Y/N and in an instant she wished a hole in the earth would swallow her up.

He looked crushed at the mention of her petrification. His head and face dropped in unison.

"Oh I'm sorry baby, I was only joking, I just didn't think."

Hermione apologised profusely, realising her mistake too late. Professor McGonagall looked at the pair sympathetically. Y/N replied sadly:

"It's ok baby, it was just..."

Y/N tried to offer a smile but failed as his voice trailed off. Hermione felt terrible and McGonagall said gently:

"Your condition was very hard on Y/N. I was worried he was having a complete mental breakdown for a while Ms Granger."

"So was I Professor" Y/N chuckled, still looking down as Hermione wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. She wasn't used to seeing him this vulnerable. She hated seeing him in pain but did love that only their emotional bond could bring out a softer side of him.

The rest of Hogwarts may see him as tough and hard, but in their loving private moments he was sweet, tender, vulnerable and oh so caring. She was pulled out of her thoughts by McGonagall clearing her throat.

"I am over the moon for you both. I was honestly surprised it took you this long."

She chuckled again before returning to the task at hand:

"So subjects, as you both are aware there are usually five additional subjects offered from third year onwards. These being Care for Magical Creatures, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Divination and Muggle Studies."

Y/N and Hermione nodded in understanding. McGonagall continued:

"Regarding these subjects- Divination and Arithmancy are offered at the same time, as are Care for Magical Creatures and Ancient Runes. Muggle Studies meanwhile is offered on a Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 pm, prior to third year Astronomy.

Now as these subjects clash students usually have to pick one or the other, but in very rare and... exceptional... cases there is a method that can be employed. Am I correct in assuming you both wish to take all twelve subjects next year?"

Both Hermione and Y/N nodded their heads. McGonagall smiled.

"The last student to do this was a quite exceptionally bright young man. Also Gryffindor and Head boy...."

"Big brother Bill" Y/N smiled. Hermione smiled as well, Bill was quite polite and charming and kind when she met him around the time of Dean and Penny's wedding.

McGonagall nodded and smiled. "Yes indeed Bill Weasley, and he did so by employing a Time Turner."

Hermione's interest was peaked, she had looked into these after Y/N had referred to them the previous year.

"I sadly don't think you would be granted one by the Ministry, Y/N. But I believe I can get you one Ms Granger."

Y/N chuckled.

"Yeah my name is mud with Fudge, Professor..."

They don't even know the half of it.

Hermione giggled at Y/N's words in her head. Y/N smirked his cocky smirk and continued:

"But I have friends in... mysterious places... so I should be able to sort something."

"That would be ideal Y/N, and I will make the case for you Ms. Granger to the Ministry over the summer, I see no reason why you wouldn't get access to one."

The aged Professor smiled at Hermione before turning to Y/N with a serious face:

"Now Mr. L/N..."

Y/N quickly interrupted:

"Why are you calling me Mr. L/N all of a sudden?" Y/N chuckled noticing the serious expression on her face.

"Fine, Y/N, in a conversation with the Headmaster I was informed that you would be taking an additional four subjects on top of the ones we've discussed? That is sixteen subjects, Y/N. That's never been attempted before in Hogwarts history. Are you sure you aren't taking on too much? Along with Quidditch and your return to the creature Reserve?"

Y/N shrugged his typical nonchalant shrug.

"Meh, I'm used to pressure. I know a lot of the base material in most of the classes we are doing, plus with a Time Turner I'll be able to zip back and forth. Should be fine. But I'd only discussed three classes Professor, what is the fourth one?"

"Ah yes. So as you are aware Professor Snape will he teaching you Alchemy at the same time as Potions; and Professor Khanna with be teaching you Magical Theory and Ancient Studies alongside History of Magic. Professor Dumbledore also told me you would be learning Ghoul Studies on a Sunday with an outside expert he is bringing in solely to teach you. I don't need to explain what an honour and privilege this is Y/N."

"Ghoul Studies? You mean the Hunters course? But I've been hunting since I was eight years old. Why do I need formal training now of-"

McGonagall held up her hands in mock apology:

"I have no idea why Y/N. I'm only the messenger."

Y/N nodded, saying quickly:

"I do apologise Professor. Who's the expert being brought in? It wouldn't be Bobby Singer would it?" Y/N asked with a hopeful tone.

"Bobby Singer?" Hermione asked puzzled. Y/N smiled.

July 3rd, 1988

Y/N was stood in a living room/office and library. Thick old books lined the shelves. Jacob had dumped him here, again, while he was busy with something more important.

A man with a beard, a trucker cap and a kind smile entered the room.

"I told you Y/N, you can have a seat. Make yourself at home while you're here."

Y/N nodded timidly and said quietly:

"S-sorry sir."

Bobby looked down at him sympathetically.

"You don't need to be sorry boy. Here I found what I was looking for."

He had been hiding something behind his back. He showed it to Y/N who looked at it puzzled.

"What.. what is that Mr Singer?" Y/N asked puzzled.

"Bobby is fine son. I'm a Muggleborn, and my old man served in America during the Second World War. While he was there he discovered a game he fell in love with named baseball. Today I'm gonna take you out back and teach you how to pitch."

Bobby spoke with a warm smile. Y/N suddenly got shaky and nervous.

"B-b-but Jacob said I had to learn boggarts today Mr Singer. Jacob will be mad. I don't want to make Jacob mad sir."

Bobby rushed Y/N and knelt down. He could see the terror on the boy's face. The fear. He squeezed the eight year old tightly.

"It ain't right what he's doin' son. I knew your daddy well and this ain't what he woulda wanted. You let me worry about Jacob."

—~—

Y/N was stood in the corner trembling. Jacob and Bobby were screaming at each other:

"No we didn't learn boggarts as a matter of fact. We threw a ball around!" Bobby said defiantly.

"I fucking told you what he need-"

"He's a kid, Jacob. He's just a kid. He's entitled-"

"YOU AREN'T HIS FATHER!" Jacob roared.

"Yeah, I know I'm not his bloody father. You aren't either and Thomas would be spinning in his grave if he knew-"

"I don't need to fucking hear this!" Jacob snapped. He turned to Y/N, grabbed him by the collar so hard the boy was pulled off balance as they both apparated.

Hermione was in tears, wiping her eyes as Y/N recounted the story. McGonagall was doing everything in her power to hold them back herself.

"And that was the last time I ever saw Bobby. He's a good man" Y/N said with a smile. He hugged Hermione tightly as she buried her face into his neck.

"Uh, no, I'm afraid not Y/N. It's a man called Sam Winchester" McGonagall said, still holding back tears.

"Oh, ok. I've heard of the name. Never met him though."

McGonagall nodded:

"Ok if that is all, please go and enjoy the rest of your time here, make sure you have everything packed before you get the train on Wednesday... oh and maybe the two of you could try to spend at least one night in your dorms before the end of the year."

Hermione's head shot back from Y/N's chest in shock. Her cheeks were burning red. Y/N lifted an eyebrow at the old witch and chuckled before they were both shooed out of the classroom.

"Best not to mention that to anyone babe"
Y/N whispered to his still beetroot-colour cheeked girlfriend. She nodded, still flushed, and whispered:

"Agreed!"
