Waited Words (RichardHigley)
Waited Words
She was attached when they first met,
And yet somehow he knew.
He'd find a way to make her his,
Just how, he had no clue.
He did not lack encouragement,
She flirted hard with him.
Her man, then wearing Air Force blue,
Looked on, his look was grim.
She chose to break with her G.I.
And give our man a chance.
She too, had set her sights on him
And with no backward glance.
She chose to bide her time and see
How he would show his heart.
An inner countdown clock she set
In which he had to start.
It was a courtly courting dance
He chose to weave with her.
He wore a bold facade outside,
Inside was not so sure.
Her fortnight clock was winding down,
It seemed without her prize.
Then on the deadline day save one,
He looked into her eyes.
He said the words she'd waited for,
The words she hoped to hear,
The words an echo of her own,
He said, "I love you, dear."
