But it had. The missiles still headed for their assigned locations were proof of that. The cube fell to the floor with a clink. It burned through the ship and I watched in confusion as it eventually fell right through. Steve put his shield down, took off his mask and took the Captain's chair. I did the same. I shook out my hair and watched him swivel around. I ran forward and placed a hand on his shoulder as I scanned the various buttons, dials and levers.

"Damn." I breathed out.
"Yeah." He replied. He took the wheel and looked at the circle screen. New York was close and we were headed in that direction.

Through the window the white clouds looked beautiful and the sun peaked between them. Being above the clouds would have had a calming effect if we weren't in a ship with missles headed for the city.

"Come in. This is Captain Rogers and Agent Carter. Do you hear me?" He tried after connecting to the right communications.
"Captain Rogers, what is you-"
"Cynthia? Steve? Can you hear me?" I heard my sisters voice. "Are you alright?"
"Peggy!" I gasped.
"Schmidt's dead!" Steve explained.
"What about the plane?" Peggy asked. Steve looked at me in the eye and I knew. We might not make it out of here.

"That's a little tougher to explain." He went back to the dials and let out a deflated sigh.
"Give me your coordinates. I'll find you a safe landing sight." Peggy pleaded desperately.
"There's not gonna be a safe landing... but I can try to force it down."
"I'll get Howard on the line." Peggy stuttered and she was the clearest speaker I knew. "He'll know what to do."
"There's not enough time." I shouted so she could hear me over the wind.
"This thing's moving too fast and it's headed for New York." Steve added. I felt tears threatening to fall when it really hit me what was about to happen. "We gotta put her in the water." My grip on his shoulder tightened.
"Please don't do this." Peggy said. I let out a sob I was trying to contain. "We have time. We can work it out."
"Right now we're in the middle of nowhere. If we wait any longer, a lot of people are gonna die."

"Peggy." I whimpered. I tried not to but it came out anyway. "I love you so much. But this is our choice" I cried. Steve looked at me and stared back at his blue eyes. She was silent on the other line.
"Cynthia. What am I supposed to do without you?" Peggy asked.
"You'll be okay. Fight for me." I requested with smile.
"I love you to-" the radio cut off as soon as Steve tilted the ship.
"P-Peg?" I felt the tears roll down my cheek. My thoughts went to everything I have and haven't done. The tears fell faster.

"I'm sorry, Cynthia." Steve started. "I promised to keep you safe and I didn't."
"It's not your fault, Steve." I smiled, sadly. I turned his face toward mine. His blue eyes were sad, the familiar twinkle was dim. I glanced down at his lips then back into his eyes.

The wind coming through the broken glass made my hair fly everywhere. But all I could think of was Peggy... and everything I wanted to do with Steve. I wanted to dance with him. I wanted to get married and grow old with him. But that would never happen now. So in this unfortunate situation, I take a leap and lean forward. He does too. My eyes close. But before we touch there's a crash.
Everything goes black.
