Chapter 24 - The Fall of a Soldier
The wind rushing against my face made my nose cold and ears red. As we rode down my adrenaline was pumping and I found myself readying for action.
We landed on the train lightly and pressed our chests down. Soon we got up and started making our way ahead. I turned around to see Bucky, who gave me a smile, and everyone else following behind us. Steve gestured to the ladders on the side of the train he quickly went down. I went after him and Bucky went in after me. He closed the door and took his gun out. I did the same.
We had gone into some kind of weapons compartment. There were long cylindrical capsules in the middle. We walked along the sides. The train made noises as it ran along the tracks but we were quiet.
Steve walked ahead and we both went through a doorway, when I heard something sliding behind us. I turned behind with my shield ready when I realized that the door had closed on Bucky. He looked through the glass, slightly alarmed. Steve tried to break open the door but he turned around when he heard my gunshots.
A man in dark grey and fluorescent blue armor came through the door. He started shooting aside so we had to hide behind some of the boxes. I could hear more gunshots coming from through the door, where Bucky was. When the man in blue shot, it created huge dents. I shuddered thinking what it could do to us. The shooting stopped and we heard a low whine. Steve charged, taking advantage of the weapon recharging to grab onto railing on the ceiling and kick him right in the chest. He was down with another jab from his shield.
"Cynthia watch out!" Steve yelled and I stepped away as he fired the man's weapon at the door. It blasted open and we opened the second one with a simple press of a button. Steve threw Bucky a gun and he nodded. Steve ran ahead with a shield on his face and hit one of the boxes on the side, knocking the man out. While one was distracted, I shot the other with ease.
"I had him on the ropes." Bucky defended himself.
"I know you did." Steve replied.
"Get down!" Steve yelled as he pushed me behind him. My shield went up on instinct as I caught sight of the man with the blue guns. He fired at us, knocking Steve and Bucky to the side and creating a hole on one side of the train. The cold air hit us as the train continued running with speed. Steve had let go of his shield so Bucky grabbed it and started shooting. I covered Steve and I with mine so that he could gain his balance. Before we could even comprehend what was happening, Bucky was shot at and he was blasted back right to the open side of the train. I threw my shield at the man, knocking him down for good.
"Bucky!" Steve took his mask off and ran to where Bucky was holding on for dear life. He climbed out to him and held out his hand. The railing Bucky was clinging onto started peeling off. "Hang on!" Steve pleaded, desperately. "Grab my hand!"
The railing broke off, their hands inches away as he slipped.
"NO" Steve cried out as Bucky screamed, falling to his death. I fell onto my knees, not being able to stand or have the energy to say anything. Steve's breathing hardened as he climbed back in.
He weakly knelt down beside me and I hugged him. He hugged me back, trying not to show the tears streaming down his face. I held Steve's head against my head and ran my finger through his hair as he let it out. I grabbed his face, forcing him to look into my eyes. "We'll finish what Bucky died for." I promised him. "For Bucky." I whispered as I stared into his blue eyes, now dull from the pain. I placed a light kiss on his forehead. We stayed there on the floor of the HYDRA train in silence for 30 more seconds before standing up.
