The Building

On the way home I merely laid in the limousine. It wasn't a very long drive, but traffic was making it much worse than it needed to be. I carried my Joker phone in both hands, hovering over my face- which is what I dropped it on when Alfred hit a bump.

This caused me to shoot up from my laying position. Massaging my nose as I looked outside of the window, I gasped at the sight before me.
"Alfred!" I cried, banging on the window that separated the two of us, "Alfred!" After a couple more hits to the window Alfred rolled it down.
"Yes, Mistress Dolly?" I climbed halfway through the separating window, over Alfred and pointed to the burning apartment building on the side of the road, "Yes, yes. Well I'm sure the firemen will take care of it." He just shrugged, I was about to return to my phone when i heard an ear piercing scream.

Falling backward into my compartment of the limo, I once again looked out of my own window. My heart began racing and my palms began to sweat.
"B-but, Alfred! Isn't Bruce going to do something!?" I squeaked as I heard another scream.
"Mistress Dolly, Master Bruce can not get involved with all of Gotham's affairs. He said so himself- They can handle some things on their own." Somehow his voice was calm, "Your drive to do good is admirable but you must-"
"My baby boy is still in there!" A brown haired woman cried, tugging the sleeve of a police officer. I opened my door just as the cop said they were doing everything they could.

"Dolores!" Alfred yelled as I jumped out of the slow moving limousine. He couldn't get out because he couldn't abandon the car.
"Sorry, Alfred!" I called as he still drove away, I ran up behind the woman who needed her baby.
"P-p-please! He's only on the third floor!" The lady pleaded to the cop who was beginning to look increasingly annoyed. I pushed passed them and into the building.
"Ma'am! You can't!" An authoritative female voice yelled after me. By the time i was near the entrance she was close enough to grab me, so I did the only thing that made sense- I back kicked her onto the ground. Before running any further I yanked off both of my red heels.

Once I managed to get out of them I continued my run into the building completely barefoot. The first floor was very hot and already falling apart, so finding the stairs proved to be rather difficult, but not impossible. Taking in a deep breath I began to run up two flights of stairs, I bolted up as fast as my legs would go. Halfway through the second flight the stairs collapsed and I began waving my hand erratically in hopes that I would grab something to keep me up. Luckily, I grabbed the metal handrail, screaming in pain as my hands began to burn due to the heated metal. I groaned angrily as I pull myself up, my feet slipping as I tried to maintain my footing. Flames danced around my ankles and flickered at my feet. I started walking down the hallway, listening and looking for any sign of a baby.

Finally, I heard a heart-braking sob coming from apartment 312. I jiggled the doorknob, but that just ended in me burning my hand again. I backed up to the opposite wall, then charged at the door with my shoulder. If the door weren't already fragile there is no way I could've broken through it. I gasped at the act that the baby was on the floor- it barely looked old enough to sit up on its own. Upon gasping I took in an excessive amount of smoke and ashes, I doubled-over, hacking up a lung.

My adrenaline was depleting, the pain was setting in and i could hardly stand anymore. I stumbled over to the baby, picking him up and running out of the apartment as quickly as I could. I realized how screwed I was when I came back to the stairs.
"Swear I've read this in a comic book before." I mumble as I back up to get a running start. I tuck the baby into my abdomen and guard it with my arms. Looking down at the beautiful, blue-eyed infant once more before running towards the large gap between the flight.

"So much for a superhero landing." I growl after I crush my ankles with the landing, and slam into a wall with my shoulder. I stand up slowly, at this point my vision is blurred and my mind is foggy- the only thing I know is I have to save this baby. After tumbling down the last light of stairs I begin to crawl through the bottom floor, using one hand to hold the child, who has stopped crying, into my chest. I cough a few more times, I then fall onto the ground, unable to move.
"My baby. My baby. My baby." The woman's voice began to repeat in my head, over and over- giving me a heavy headache. After another minute or so I managed to get back up to my hands and knees.

Seeing the double-doors fills me with vast amounts of hope. 20 feet. 15 feet. 10 feet. Five feet. Four. Three. Three. Three. Three... I've fallen again, and this time I don't think I'm strong enough to get back up. I pull together my remaining strength and let out a loud scream.
"HELP! Someone! please..." My eyes close slowly. I hear the doors flying open. I feel the baby being taken from my arms, despite how tightly I tried to hold it. And finally I feel someone pick me up and carry me out of the building.

When I opened my eyes again it was still light out, so I couldn't have been out for more than a few minutes. I looked around a bit and saw I was laying in the grass outside the building. Sitting up slowly, rubbing my head, and beginning to cough.
"Mistress Dolly!" A British voice called. I turned around and found Alfred running after me. I stood up, a little to quickly, and fell over into Alfred's arms.
"Thank you." I said quietly, using his arms as support.

"What happened?" He asked frantically, I began explaining the building, the cops, and the baby but someone pulled my shoulder to spin me around. When I recognized the hair and face I expected a 'thank you', I was not, however, expecting what came next.

"B*tch!" She yelled as I caressed my reddened cheek, which no doubt had a hand print on it now.
"What the f*ck, lady!?" I yelped. I looked down at the ground as Alfred stepped in front of me.
"Stay away from my baby!" She shrieked, wrapping up the infant, I had just saved, tighter in his blue blanket. I gaped at her like a goldfish out of water.
"B-bu-but-but..." I began to stutter.

Before I could defend myself Alfred pulled me away.
"Don't worry, Miss." He wrapped an arm around my back and led me to the limo, "I shall mend your injuries when we return to the manor. No doubt they gave you less than mediocre treatment after pulling you out of that building." He opened the passenger side door for me and gently nudged me in, then taking his seat on the driver's side.

"I don't get it, Alfred. No matter what I do it's never enough; it's never good enough." I looked down at my lap, letting out a few coughs as he got back onto the road, "I try. I really do." I promised, my tears beginning to choke me much like the smoke did, "I wasn't looking for a 'thank you', I just wanted... I just w-wanted to save that b-baby." I began to silently weep into my hands.

"Awe, c'mon. Don't cry. You did a very chivalrous thing. No doubt Bruce would be proud."
"N-No! Don't tell Bruce!"
"Why not?!"
"He'll be upset, I-I know it. He might be mad that I risked my life, mad that I jumped out if the car, mad I didn't make it all the way out of the building on my own..."
"Preposterous." He said suddenly. I stopped talking. I turned to look out the window without another word. Tears streaming down my cheeks, my mind felt like the storm that was brewing over Gotham.
