Broken Promises

       "Only how we met."
"That's good enough!" Artemis sang happily as she jumped up and crushed me with a hug.
"Why don't you join us?" I whispered in her ear. She pushed me away suddenly, holding onto my shoulders and piercing my soul with her brown eyes.
"Why- what do you mean?"
"Join us. We have Jade, she's Cheshire. You can be Alice, I'll be the Mad Hatter." (A/N: If u get that reference let me know😊) She shook her head and gave me another hug.
"You'll get better. I know it." I pushed her off of me.
"This is me. There is no better than this." I replied angrily.

"I'm sorry guys." The lady in the lab coat said as she stood from her seat, "You all need to go. Dolly needs to take her medicine, shower, and go to therapy. We will talk about her possibly going you-know-where over the phone." Bruce stood up and went to shake her hand. Thanking her for everything.

~Time Skip to after Artemis Dies~

"Dolly? Are you up yet?" One of the nurses asked quietly as she came to give me my morning dose. I rolled over on my bed (they had moved me out of the padded cell) and looked up at the ceiling.
"Yes, Rachel. I'm up." I yelled so she could hear me through the metal door, I sat up on my bed. She opened the door, entering with a silver tray, and a pink apron around her waist.

The first time she had brought me my medicine was after I had viciously mangled Pablo, the 30-something year old who did it before her. But her first day on the job I decided to go easy on her- if she got comfortable she might forget to close the door behind her one day, or I could get away with not taking my medication for a day. Put simply, it'd be a great advantage.

"Sleep well?" Rachel inquired. I nodded and asked in return.
"Good, thank you. You have visitors today."
"Do I?"
"Yes." She opened one of the pill bottles and handed it to me along with a glass of water, "Have you been having an more flashbacks?" Rachel asked as she closed one bottle and opened another.
"I remember more about the blonde girl- Artemis. I remember how close we were, how much I loved her, and how we were heroes in Star City one time." She looked at me with wide eyes, shaking her head and reopening the orange bottle she just closed.

"You're delusional. You need more of-" I jumped up off of the bed, taking her tray and throwing it against the wall.
"I AM NOT!" I screamed. She stood up quickly and backed against the door, I grabbed her by the hair and slammed her against the wall next to the door.
"What's the code?" I growled into her ear.
"I'll never tell you." She whimpered. I pulled her head backwards and kicked her leg.
"Tell me!" I hollered into her ear.
"624903." She cried as I dug the nails of my free hand into her shoulder. I threw her against the ground, giving her a quick kick to the ribs before hurriedly punching the code in and running out. I kept quiet as I snuck down the hall, taking a step backwards into someone.

I turned around quickly, prepared to fight but the sight before me stopped me.
"Wally?" I recognized him from his previous visit with Artemis. He quickly, like waaaaaay fast I might add, grabbed me by the waist, pinning my arms at the side.
"Let me go!!" I hissed. He somehow managed to keep his grip even as I squirmed around.

Suddenly I got another headache.

~Flashback~

"Let me go, Wally!" I laughed as I was taken by the waist and thrown over the read-head's shoulder.
"No way, BJ. You deserve this." He took me to the living room in the cave and slammed me down onto a green sofa. He then grabbed a pillow and began beating me with it. I began to laugh uncontrollably as I held my head in my arms in an attempt of protection.
"Ow!" Wally yelled out of nowhere.

He turned around and I got a good view of Robin, in a Blue Jay hoodie and sun glasses, I was wearing a Robin sweatshirt and jeans- something we liked to do every once in a while. Robin hit him once again with a green pillow.
"That's not okay, Wally! You don't hurt her!" Robin shouted playfully as he shoved Wally out of the way, "Only I can!" Robin then proceeded to hit me himself with the pillow.
"What did I ever do to you guys." The boys simply shrugged, followed by both of them attacking me with pillows.

~End~

I rubbed my head. I was helped up by Wally and the raven-haired boy with sky blue eyes, he looked like an older version of the one from my vision, but so did Connor.
"Are you okay?" Dick asked me. I stood up and nodded my head, before stepping on his foot, pushing him out of the way and making a mad dash out of the hallway, hopefully I'd be able to out run the three guards at the end of the hallway.

"Artemis is dead!" Wally's voice belted down the corridor, stopping me dead in my tracks. I turned around slowly.
"You're lying." I spat venomously. Wally's eyes grew somber, and they began to tear up as he shook his head. I fell onto the my knees, pushing my back against the wall as I moved to my butt and hugged my knees into my chest. The black-haired boy knelt down next to me, rubbing my back. I threw myself in between his arms, crying into his chest.

~Flashback~

I felt a hand on my back.
"We have to go." A soft voice told me. I shook my head and began crying in his [Robin's] chest- this was the second time I had seen my parents dead. I felt his arms wrap around me protectively. I started calming down when he started rocking back and forth. I pulled away slowly and looked at him with my puffy, red eyes.

~End~

In that very moment I remembered the death of my second adoptive parents, but this time the memory didn't hurt, it felt good. It was somehow... Relaxing. The memory, for some reason, brought me both comfort and remorse. I looked up at the person who was holding me protectively in his arms.

At that very second I realized: Dick was Robin, Dick is Nightwing, and I knew I wouldn't tell anyone, I wouldn't try to hurt him, despite the longing deep within my chest. I understood how I felt about Artemis' death, and I refused to let anyone else feel that way. Not that I wanted to be good, I just didn't want to be bad.

I would bring whoever did this to justice. I would do it for Artemis- even though she broke her promise.

~Flashback~

"But, Dolls, it wasn't in vain if it meant you got even another minute to live. And as for the hero part- that wasn't me being heroic, that was me being your big sister." Artemis explained slowly. I looked up at her with a grateful smile and she returned it.
"I love you." I said with a goofy smile.
"I love you, too." She began to tear up, "Please, promise me you'll never leave me; don't be like Jade." I looked at her with wide eyes before nodding vigorously.
"Only if you promise to never die again."

~End~

I looked up at Wally from within the arms of Dick.
"Who did it?" I requested. He hung his head, his green eyes not quite meeting mine.
"Kaldur'ahm; Aqualad. Remember him?"
"I do now." I answered as I stood up, "Listen, I don't care what I have to do, I'll be good. But you have to get me out of here." The boys looked at each other before looking back at me.

"We've been talking about it." Dick said as he pulled out his phone, "I'll call Bruce; he'll call Arkham. We were going to have you brought to the manor for a chance at better recovery. And we think Bruce has a better way for you, in particular, to be 'cured'." I nodded happily as he stood up and began to make the phone call. I couldn't wait to make him paying for forcing her to break her promise.

A/N: This chapter was really hard to write. Idk why. But I have  great ideas for the future. I just want to make sure my writing isn't getting too crappy. If u guys think I should make changes to my style or the way the story is set up let me know, plz. XOXO😘😘😘
