Chapter 11
They spent the rest of the flight comfortably. The turbulence only lasted a few minutes, which was more than enough for Emie. She’d had more than her share of excitement for the next few years it felt. Tom had gotten up and brought her cardigan back over for her, which she’d shrugged her arms quickly through the sleeves. She couldn’t even think about what had just happened a few feet away. If she did, she knew her cheeks would turn pink. Tom seemed completely comfortable though. Perhaps he did this often. Emie suddenly wondered if he was a member of the mile high club. Maybe this was a regular Friday night for him. Her stomach rolled at the thought.
She groaned softly, closing her eyes and feeling tired all over again.
“Why don’t you get some sleep?” His voice was soothing, low and deep. She could listen to him read the dictionary, and she’d still have trouble focusing. Emie nodded her head, moving slightly to her side and resting her head against his shoulder.
“Aren’t you tired?” She asked, yawning.
“I need to answer a few more emails and then I’ll try and get some sleep.” He said. It was nearly five in the morning. Emie nodded, closing her eyes as Tom pulled the small table over and opened his laptop up.
“You work a lot.” She said softly, not opening her eyes. She felt calm and sleepy, lulled by the soft music and comfort of having Tom so close by. He chuckled softly.
“Mmm, it’s what I tend to do.” He sighed. She opened her eyes a bit, and saw he wasn’t on email, but was on Twitter. He was typing quickly, his long fingers moving fast across the keyboard. She smiled.
“You have a twitter?”
“I do. Do you?” He asked. She shook her head. “What’s your username?” He asked.
Emie hesitated. “EmeLeo.” She said quickly. Tom lifted a brow, looking at her quizzically.
“Eme Leo?” He asked, slowly typing it into the search bar. She nodded.
“It’s my…pseudonym.” She pressed her lips together, not looking at him. Tom made a gasping noise, in mock surprise. Or possibly real surprise.
“Did you just tell me your ultra secret pseudonym you use for your writing? This is a revelation!” He exclaimed, half laughing, half serious. He pulled away from her, trying to make eye contact. Emie laughed, rolling her eyes.
“Don’t spread it around, now.” She grinned. Tom held up his hands as if powerless, and then went back to typing rapidly on the computer. In a few seconds, he had pulled up both her Twitter account and a rather extensive Google search on her. Or rather, her as Eme Leo.
“This is incredible, Em. Really. I am completely struck by this.” He said, his eyes glazing slightly as he scrolled through articles about her, and reviews of her books. She sighed, sitting up and pulling her golden blond hair away from her shoulders. Of course, there weren’t any pictures of her, and that was the way she liked it. Her editor and publicist, Scotty, had so far done an excellent job at keeping her a rather faceless author.
“This is embarrassing. This is why I don’t tell anyone.” She laughed softly, pulling her knees up to her chest. Tom gaped at her for a moment.
“You should be proud of this, darling. Let’s establish right now that you are incredible. I am going to order all your books in a moment.” He said, grinning. He kept scrolling through the google search and then moved to her Twitter. “You don’t tweet a lot, but you’ve got a lot of followers.” He said.
“I use it mostly for book promotion. I’m more of an observer.” She shrugged. Tom clicked a few things and then grinned.
“You’ve just gained one more follower.” He laughed then, as if completely pleased with himself. Emie couldn’t help but smile too. Only the people closest to her knew her pen name. Now Tom knew. She wasn’t sure why she had been honest with him and told him, but it felt nice that he knew. She was proud of her work. She was extremely proud of it. But she just didn’t feel the need for everyone to know it was hers exactly. She knew it was hers and that was enough.
“What do you tweet about?” She asked, scooting back near him and looking over his shoulder. Tom moved his arm, and threw it around her shoulder, pulling her in. She smiled.
“Same as you. Work promotion, charities, the occasional song of the day.” He said, clicking on his twitter profile and bringing it up. Emie looked closely, reaching over to the laptop and taking control as she slowly scrolled through his feed.
“Song of the day… “Tower” by Bon Iver.” She read slowly out loud. “You just tweeted that a minute ago.”
“We were just dancing to it.” He said softly. She felt the blush creep up quietly to her face. Tom leaned down then, and brushed his lips gently over hers. She tilted her head towards his, kissing him back gently. She pulled away then, after a moment.
“Let’s not get out of hand.” She mumbled, then started to giggle as he nuzzled her neck.
“Please, let’s get out of hand.” He teased as she laughed, pulling away to start clicking around on the laptop. “What are you doing?” He asked, reaching up and brushing her hair away from her neck to give him better access. Emie felt a shiver run up her neck as he pressed his lips to the hollow at the bottom of her throat.
“You just gained another follower as well.” She laughed.
