Chapter 24
Buster rushes on stage to introduce the next singer. "Would you please welcome to the stage in her first ever live appearance....Meena!" The crowd applauds but the young elephant is nowhere to be found. "Meena? Is she coming out?" He asks Eddie, who shrugs. Karla moves away from Johnny's side and heads to the changing rooms where she last saw the girl, Buster following her lead. He pulls back the curtain and the two see Meena with her back pressed against the wall and wearing a beautiful blue dress. "Meena what's wrong? Are you ok?" He asks.
"I-I-I....I can't move. I'm-I'm terrified." She stutters. Buster Looks back as he hears the crowd start to clap out on beat for her.
"You've got this Meena. You've been practicing so much." Karla encourages.
"Give me your hand, Kid." Buster says, holding out his paw. She, as gentle as she can, places her large hand into his tiny paw, but to him it feels like she dropped her entire weight into his paw. They both walk to the stage with Karla hopping on the other side of Meena. The sounds from the impatient audience are louder than ever. "Okay, deep breath, deep breath, and remember....."
"Once you get on that stage and feel the energy, you won't be afraid anymore." Karla finishes Buster's sentence.
"Couldn't have said it better myself."
Out in the crowd Meena's family is sitting on a bench with a homemade sign. "Meena! Meena! Whooooo Hooooooo!" Her grandfather yells out.
"I can do it, I can do it, okay..." Meena quietly tells herself as she walks up to the mic. She is too busy hyping herself up that she didn't realize how close she has gotten to the front of the stage and knocks over the mic stand, and it hits a gazelle in the head. They dizzily fall to the ground. "Oh! Oh, I'm so sorry! Um..."
Laughter can be heard from the wing. The cast turns to see, with no surprise, Mike with his paws on his back legs, kneeling over laughing. Karla takes a glance back at Meena, who's looking terrified while Eddie fixes up the mic stand again. The pup makes a quick decision and makes her way over to the oblivious mouse. She steadies herself on the crutches and puts as much pressure on her bad leg as she can; which isn't much. Finally, she swiftly and quietly scoops him up with her good paw and punts him across the floor. His unintelligible yells can be heard, "I've heard enough out of you to last a lifetime." (I've been wanting to write this scene since I first saw this movie.) She turns back around and innocently hops back to the group, who all quietly applaud the pup. They turn back to the stage where Meena is looking directly at them. Buster whispers the word 'Sing' and Karla quietly tells her, "I got your back."
Meena turns back to the crowd and with a quiet, "Okay." She begins to sing acapella.
"Everybody's got a thing
But some don't know how to handle it."
Meena clears her throat and looks to Eddie, silently telling him to start the music.
"Always reachin' out in vain
Just takin' the things not worth having
But don't you worry ' bout a thing."
Mike rushes back over, being wary of the pup, to see Meena sing for himself. Meena's family quietly swoons at their young family member.
"Don't you worry 'bout a thing, Mama
'Cause I'll be standin' on the side
When you check it out."
Mike takes off his hat in respect, astounded at the voice the girl kept secret because of her fear. Meena gains a bit of confidence, enough to look up at the crowd. Off to the side, she sees Buster and Karla nodding their heads. The beat drops and like magic, all the elephant's fears are gone.
"They say your sty;e of life's a drag
And that you must go other places
Just don't you feel too bad
When you get fooled by smiling faces."
Meena takes the mic off its stand and starts dancing with all the confidence in the world.
"Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, Baby
'Cause I'll be standing on the side
When you check it out~
When you get off~ your trip."
Mike cheers, getting into the song as much as the rest of the cast. Suddenly, the mouse gets grabbed by a large paw; the bears. They carry him off stage out the door and down the street. "Guys, guys, wait–we can talk this over, right? We're all reasonable individuals–Aaargh!" Mike is quieted when the boss swallows the mouse and smiles, satiated. He is satisfied only for a moment before he is promptly hit in the gut by a red car door. Mike tumbles out of the bear's mouth and looks up to see his red sports car, with his girlfriend driving.
"Get it quick!"
"Oh thank you, Sweetheart." They drive off as the boss jumps onto the back of the car. The driver swerves to hopefully make the bear fly off. He disappears from their sight. "Oh that was close."
"Yeah." The car revs up and drives off ,but the bear is still clinging to the back.
Back at the theater, Meena's confident dancing not only has the audience on their feet, but the entire stage is rocking, literally.
"Everybody needs a chance
A chance to check out the new, yeah
You're the only one to sees
The changes you take yourself through. Oh~"
Meena's long and high note practically blows away the back wall and curtain, revealing the perfect backdrop of the city's lights and the full moon. The music stops and the crowd cheers as the singer turns around to see what she did. She turns back to the audience and shrugs, taking ownership of the moment. The music starts again.
"Don't you worry 'bout a thing.
Don't you worry 'bout a thing.
Don't you worry 'bout a thing.
Don't you worry 'bout a thing.
Oh, pa-pa, pa-pa-pa-pa
Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Pa-pa, pa-pa-pa-pa
Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa."
Meena's family and a few singers from the auditions dance and sing along.
"Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
'Cause I'll be standin' on the side
When you check it out
Don't you worry
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
'Cause I'll be standin', I'll be standin' for you
Oh~ Don't you worry 'bout a thing~"
The lights instantly turn off with the last beat, and the crowd cheers again. All the lights turn back on so the audience can see the singer. Meena's family are crying tears of joy. Meena places the mic back on the stand and heads towards the wing. "Sorry about the stage Karla, Mr. Moon." She says.
"Are you kidding me? I don't care about the stage. You did it, Meena. You conquered your fear." Buster explains.
"Yeah, and I don't need a special backdrop for my song." Karla adds.
"Alright Kiddo, are you ready?" Buster asks.
"Yes, I'm ready." She says, brushing the nonexistent dirt off her white dress.
"Are you sure about this, Love? We can always see if we grab a chair for you." Johnny asks.
"Well, I can't let fear stop me from doing the thing I love, can I?" Karla says, smirking at Buster.
"Again, I couldn't have said it better myself. I'll go and introduce you." Buster walks away.
