Chapter 13
Johnny comes out of his thoughts as he pulls up to the theater. He slips into the back and calls out the pig. "Rosita! Rosita! Wait wait wait wait! Can I take your place please?"
"Sure Johnny, go ahead." Rosita agrees, but Gunter is already on stage.
"Okay, get ready cuz I'm warning you, ha ha ha! Ziss stage is about to explode with major piggy power." He rips off his clothes to reveal a bright red leotard.
"I am so sorry. I have no control." Rosita takes the mic of the stand in front of her. Johnny groans in frustration. Gunter sees Rosita still in the wings and, laughing, urges her to join him. "Okay. Come on. You can do this...."
"I stay out too late.
Got nothing in my brain–"
Rosita trips while sprinting on stage, and falls on her face. Meena quickly stops the music.
"Are you okay?" Buster asks, looking over the desk that was still there from rehearsals.
"Oh, yes, I am fine, thank you. How are you?" Gunter asks, still in mid dance move from when Rosita fell. SHe picks herself up and gives a slight glare to her dance partner.
"Okay, Johnny! Let's get you out here!" Johnny rushes on stage with the piano, while the pigs walk off. "And you guys- you've gotta work on that routine! Take it away, Johnny!" The gorilla starts to rush through his song, missing notes and hitting wrong keys.
"You can't just sing it, you gotta show zat fire and desire!" Gunter tries to help Rosita as she rubs her sore snout.
"The fire went out a long time ago." She replies her voice comes out a little nasally.
"Vat?" Gunter questions.
"Look, I can't even keep count of the steps!" Rosita turns around.
"Ugh! Counting! Schmounting! She zinks too much wiz her head, right?" Gunter asks the other cast members. Rosita turns to see Meena, Karla and Ash all nodding at her. Ash blows a bubble with her gum. "Yah, yah, see! Forget za steps und just, like, let ze music take control of your body parts!"
"My body parts are not responding, okay? It's never gonna happen. I should just be getting groceries." Rosita starts heading out to the lobby.
Rosita? Please Like, don't go!" Gunter calls out along with the others backstage.
She rushes out of the theater. "Psst! Hey! Hey! Down here!" a voice calls out. Rosita looks down to see Mike peeping out from behind the door, looking frightened. "You see three nasty lookin' bears out there?" He asks, looking around, paranoid.
"Uh, no."
"Ah, great." His normal personality comes back and he struts out the door. "Hey, by the way, love your act. Seriously. The part where you fall flat on your face? Oh ho, that cracks me up every time. See ya around porky!" He leaves Rosita lost for words.
On stage, Johnny is just finishing his song. "Aw, man." He runs his hands down his fast in annoyance.
"Johnny, I know I'm asking a lot of you–" Buster starts.
"Mr. Moon, I'm really trying, I promise!"
"What about your back up song? Have you practiced that?" Buster questions.
"Uh... not yet...." Johnny looks away.
"Well, why don't we go back and work on that one, okay? I mean look, if you play like that in front of Nana Noodleman–" Buster looks up to see Johnny has gone and the chair is spinning around. "Johnny?"
Johnny's truck turns a corner and slams on the brakes to avoid hitting a stationary car. A quick glance out of the window confirms he's in a traffic jam. He tries to reverse but a truck has already blocked him in. Johnny slams on his horn but it's futile. He checks his watch and his head drops with the weight of having failed his dad. "I'm dead."
"You will be if you don't start talking now." A voice calls out from the back of the truck. Johnny lets out a very manly scream. (Note sarcasm) and turns his head to see Karla slipping fluidly inside the cab. "Ok, Johnny. How'd you really know that I was in the car accident a year ago?"
"What are you talking about? I was a bystander." Johnny lies.
"'I'm sorry for what happened. I never wanted to be in his gang.' That's what you told me when I was in the hospital." Johnny looks at the pup in shock. "Yeah, I remembered everything. Didn't you know animals in comas could hear everything."
"Oh," He groans again.
"Better start talking." Karla growls out.
"Ok, my dad's......Big Daddy." Johnny hesitates before finally telling his big secret.
"The gang leader?!" Karla asks, her eyes widened.
Johnny nods sadly, terrified that she wouldn't want to talk to him ever again. "They had just robbed a jewelry store.....with me as a look-out. Our getaway driver was weaving through traffic when he noticed that the stop light ahead of us was going to change. He tried to find some way to avoid the intersection, but my dad commanded him to run through it. The driver didn't even have time to swerve to miss your car. You should have seen him after the accident. He was almost in tears in our training room. He told me that he was sorry, he wanted you and your family to know that he was sorry."
"If I am able to, I want to talk to him."
"It may be a little harder now. I was changed to the getaway driver and now that I'm stuck, my old man and his buddies have probably been arrested."
In Ash's apartment, she sits alone strumming her guitar. Her floor littered in torn photos and posters of her and Lance.
"....Finally see it's not just a dream
when you set it all free."
"Okay, wait, let me see..." Ash stops playing and changes one of the sting's frequencies. She plays the last chords again.
When you set it all free,
when you set it all free,
all free, all free."
After they got out of traffic, Johnny drove Karla and himself to the jail where Big Daddy and the gang were brought to. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
"There's a glass wall separating me and Barry."
"Not to mention the security guards and Barry's a real softie."
"Oh I wasn't meaning protection for me. I was meaning for him, from me. I may hear a story out before giving my judgement, but that doesn't mean that I won't attack if I need to."
"Good to know." Johnny says with a gulp. "If you want, I can see if we can be able to talk to them next to each other."
"No, I'll be fine. Besides, this is something I need to take care of alone."
"Ok we'll meet out here when we are done. Remember just ask for Barry." Johnny gives her the same reassuring smile he did when he gave her comfort at the funeral. That same smile that has recently started making her feel weak at the knees. She smiles back as they walk through the entrance. After removing anything labeled 'contraband' and going through a metal detector they split off to separate security guards.
Karla's P.O.V
"Name of inmate?" He says stiffly.
"Barry." I answer confidently. "Is it alright if I have a seperate room. I'd like to talk to him privately."
"Come with me." He leads me through the metal door and into the dull grey concrete hallway. He opens a door at the far end to reveal an interrogation size room. "He'll be in here shortly." And with that the door shuts a metallic clatter sounds alerting me to the fact that I am locked in. I look around the room. 'If the rest of the jail looks like this then I can understand why the inmates look dead inside.' I see my reflection in the glass. My eyes have bags under them and lost a bit of their shine. Since Johnny told me about his dad and who was driving the truck, I have been slightly dreading this visit.
I am brought out of my thoughts when the same metallic clatter comes for the other side of the glass. A shorter gorilla walks in. His eyes widen when he doesn't recognize who's wanting to talk to him. "'Ello who are you?"
"I'm a new friend of Johnny." I start. "I'm also one of the passengers from the van you hit last year." I add bluntly. Barry's eyes widen even more. "Johnny told me what happened during your heist. You being a part of a gang doesn't bother me. All I really want to know is how you felt afterwards. I think being in jail is already bad enough. I can't speak for my dad or brother, but I don't hate you for what happened. I may be upset that it resulted in me losing my mom, but I would never wish harm on the one at fault."
Barry looks at the young dog with blurry vision. He had been so worried that the family of the wreck would hunt him down. "I know saying, 'I'm sorry' won't be enough, but I'm being genuine when I say it to myself every night. Johnny found me in our training room after he came back home from seeing you in the hospital. I had been trying to get my mind off seeing the sight of your mother through with her head leaning against the window and blood on her fur." I slightly shudder at the reminder of what Mom looked like. "That image has been ingrained in my brain since. Johnny may have told you that we are thieves, but we would never purposely put the public in danger." I nod, understanding that he never meant to hurt my family.
"Thank you for telling me this. If the image of my injured mom is stuck in your head then honestly I can't think of a harsher punishment than that. I won't bother you any longer. I just wanted to hear what happened from the driver." I stand to leave. Barry is still staring at me in shock and a bit of admiration.
"Thank you for your understanding. I consider the gang my family. If I lost one of them, I don't think I would be able to forgive them as easily." I hear from behind me.
I turn my head slightly, "I never said I would forgive you, but you already have a constant reminder of what you have done." I walk out, leaving Barry speechless. When I arrive at the meeting spot I notice that Johnny is leaning against the truck, shoulders slumped and his head down. "Hey, did you talk to your dad?" He doesn't answer or even move. "That bad, huh?"
