Chapter 1
Karla's P.O.V
'Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bell chime in jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin' in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air'
'What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go glidin' in a one-horse sleigh'
'Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin' feet
That's the jingle bell
That's the jingle bell
That's the jingle bell rock'
Mom and I laugh as we finish our favorite holiday song. "You do know it's a month till Christmas right, I mean we are literally driving home from Thanksgiving dinner at my parent's house." Dad informs from the passenger seat.
"Exactly Dad, yesterday was the start of the holiday shopping season, which means it's officially time for Christmas music." I correct him, looking at my phone to play another song. I could feel Dad rolls his eyes at at me and Mom. "Here, why don't you pick a song for all of us to sing." I hand my phone behind me to Dad.
"Really?!" He asks in shock that I am willing to hand over my phone so easily. "Even a song that's not for Christmas?"
"Yeah, anything as long as I know it." I turn and smile at him. He looks at me with a mischievous grin as he chooses the song. The familiar melody starts and makes Mom and I perk up. "Really dad? When we are in a car?" I ask.
"You said any song." He snickers. I lightly scoff, shaking my head while smiling. "You start us."
'you' 'Allen' 'Sue' 'All'
'It's painted red, the stripe was white
It was eighteen feet, from the bow to stern light
Secondhand, from a dealer in Atlanta
I rode up with Daddy, when he went there to get her'
'Put on a shine, put on a motor
Built out of love, made for the water
Ran her for years, 'til the transom got rotten
A piece of my childhood will never be forgotten'
'It was, just an old plywood boat
A 75 Johnson with electric choke
A young boy two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And I would turn her sharp
And I would make it whine
He'd say, You can't beat the way an old wood boat rides'
'Just a little lake across the Alabama line
But I was king of the ocean
When daddy let me
Drive'
'Just an old half-ton shortbed Ford
My uncle bought new, in '64
Daddy got it right, 'cause the engine was smoking
A couple of burnt valves, and he had it going'
'He'd let me drive her when haul off a load
Down a dirt strip where we'd dump trash off of Thigpen Road
I'd sit up in the seat and stretch my feet out to the pedals
Smiling like a hero that just received his medal.'
'It was just an old hand-me-down Ford
With three-speed on the column and a dent in the door
A young boy, two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel and
And I would press that clutch
And I would, keep it right
He'd day, "a little slower son; you're doing just fine"'
'Just a dirt road with trash on each side
But I was Mario Andretti
When daddy let me...'
CRASH
I watch as an old black truck rams into the driver side of our van. Everything starts moving in slow-mo. Mom's head gets slammed into the mechanism for the seat belt by the force of the impact and the airbag. Dad is shoved into the gear shift, and I smash my head into the window, as I watch everything from above. After that everything goes black.
3rd Person's P.O.V
Luckily, the police were already on the scene. The black truck backs up expertly and dives off just as the cops pull up, a lone animal in the bed of the truck looks behind them in concern. "Holy crap!" The rhino officer comments on the scene. "This is Officer Daniel. We have a wreck caused by a hit and run at the intersection of Main Street and Lemington. I repeat car accident at the intersection of Main Street and Lemington. All available buses are required, multiple injured." Daniel and his officers start to clear the area of witnesses and get their statements.
By this time the ambulances and the closest fire station had arrived on scene. "Ok we are enforcing a mass casualty incident." The fire captain informs his teams and the other medics on scene. "Spread out and take care of the injured." Four paramedics and three firefighters made their way to the family minivan. One EMT, Linda, was able to get Allen out without any problems. "Extracting the father now, I'm going to need a stretcher and a couple of collars and boards for the females." She places Allen on the gurney. Turning back to the damaged car, she takes a look at the other patients. "Edna, I'm going to need some help here. Daughter seems to be stable, but Mother is going to need to be transported immediately." Edna, a ferret paramedic, scurries up. "Ok, go on and use the jaws of life on the driver door, I'll keep the mother steady." While the firefighters work on the doors, Edna works on Sue, and her partner works on Karla.
"Wh-What's going on?" The young pup groans, wanting to move.
"Hold on, dear. Don't move, ok. You've been in a car wreck. We are working on your mom right now. Your dad is already on his way to the hospital." The medic answers her, placing her hand on the pup's shoulder, calming her down.
"Mom?" She groans again, this time a bit groggy. "A truck, it hit us." She rambles.
"It's ok. We're here now. You're safe." After the medic says this, Karla passes back out. The medic checks the pup's pulse to make sure that she is still stable. "Daughter's out again."
"Ok we will move the mother first. Linda! We need those stretchers." The two EMTs come up with the boards. Edna and the other medic make quick work on getting the two schnauzers out of the van. "Let's get them hooked up to an IV and w...." Edna gets cut off when she notices that Sue had stopped breathing. "Linda, she's in V-tach over here! Go on and get the daughter out of here!" As Karla gets wheeled into the back of the ambulance, Edna hops on top of Sue's body and starts CPR. "I'm not losing you, you got that. You have a daughter who needs you and a husband who loves you. You aren't going to die." She says to the unconscious dog. "1 milligram of EPI." The medic commands. Linda injects the syringe into the female's arm. Edna continues to perform CPR and checks every few rounds to see if Sue has come back. "Ok, I have a pulse, get her into the bus, I'll hook her up in there." Linda makes quick work moving the patient towards the back of the ambulance to load her up. The moment Sue is level with the doorway, she rushes around and gets into the driver's seat. Edna grabs everything that she needs to check her patient's vitals. By the time they made it to the hospital, Sue's heart rate was a little on the low side but not anything to worry about until after they completed the tests on her head and neck.
