THIRTY ONE ▶ A NEW BIRTHDAY
After a long weekend of planning to take down Klaus with Stefan and Damon along with attempting to study for a sudden pop quiz on Monday for her Algebra class she could feel coming on with Lacey, Faye returned to school with a smile on her face. She had forgotten about her break with Tyler and moved on from it, deciding to hold her head high despite of it. Not to mention, her pack had the chance to take down Klaus. She was having and good day so far and was going to make sure the bubbly blonde vampire she called one of her best friends would have an even better one.
As Faye stepped out of her car with determination to give Caroline the best birthday of her life, she came face to face with the person she did not want to talk to.
"I can't talk to you, Tyler." Faye told him, preparing to push past him. He blocked her path.
"I know you're upset but..."
Faye scoffed, "Upset? You almost got Jeremy killed! One of my pack members!" She shouted lowly, "And before you ask me to understand, or to support you, can you at least tell me what you're planning to do about your sire-bond to Satan?"
"There is nothing that I can do about it, Faye!" Tyler responded to her questioned, "That's the point. I just wanted you to know that I understand why you can't be with me. Even though I want to put you first, before anyone, I can't. I'll never be able to." Faye's expression softened at his words, her heart breaking after she managed to mend it to her best possibility, "And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I just want you to know that."
Faye gulped, holding back the tears she was threatening to spill, "I'm sorry too."
Tyler pulled out a small drawstring from his pocket and handed it to Faye who took it, "I kept meaning to give this to you, but we got all held up. It was for your birthday, which I missed." He glanced down awkwardly. He sent Faye one last apologetic look before turning and walking towards the school building away from her.
When he was gone, Faye pulled upon the small drawstring and took her belated present out of the bag. A charm bracelet sat glistening in her hand. Personalized charms hung from the chain of the bracelet; her initials, a crescent moon along with a wolf that seemed to be howling. Faye tightened her hand around it, biting her lip harshly.
"You okay?" Caroline's voice was heard from beside her.
Faye looked up at the birthday girl, "I'm going home. I can't be here."
Caroline nodded in agreement and let out a sigh, "Can I join you?"
__
The two girls hung on it Faye's room at the Daniels home, draped sadly over her bed, their stomachs full from shoving the cake Lacey had made for Caroline's birthday at Faye's request down their throats and drinking O negative cocktails. Caroline was upset due to the fact she will never be full eighteen and is stuck in the same body forever. Faye did her best to comfort her, but there was no such luck seeing as she was in a pitiful mood also.
"At least your birthday's better than mine." Faye said to Caroline as the two stared up at her ceiling, "You aren't spending it with Satan."
"I'm spending it with you, what's the difference?"
Faye gasped out mockingly and pushed Caroline off the bed. The blonde hit the floor with an "umpf" and let out a loud cackle. Faye joined in, smiling brightly and laughing loudly. They were interrupted by the door bursting open loudly, shocking Faye. The hybrid rolled off her bed on to Caroline, causing the blonde to groan.
"Happy birthday!"
Faye and Caroline both looked up at the three of their friends who had broke into the Daniels home with party hats on and holding a large sign.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Faye asked Bonnie, Elena, and Matt.
"Well you two blew off school and missed our work of birthday art, so..."
"It's not even my birthday." Faye said, standing up and pulling Caroline to her feet.
Matt smiled brightly at the hybrid, "Now, today is." He walked over with Elena, placing a birthday crown on Faye's head as Elena did the same to the blonde.
"Change into warmer clothes, we are going to the Falls." Bonnie instructed the two girls before them, "S'mores, campfire.."
"Cake!" Elena said excitedly, "Like when we were little."
"Except for the tequila!" Matt sung out, raising the bottle to show Caroline and Faye both. Faye let out a soft giggle at Matt's actions.
Caroline looked at the three in front of her and let out a sigh, "Thanks, guys. Really, I'm just not feeling my birthday this year."
Bonnie's face fell, "I'm sorry, what? You've already claimed your birthday as everyone's favorite day of the year."
"Yeah, and now, it's just a reminder that technically, I'm dead." Caroline said bluntly. She calmed down for a moment and breathed in heavily before starting up again, "Look, I didn't even like 17. And the only point to being 17 is to get to 18. It's a filler year; I'm stuck in a filler year."
"You're not stuck, Caroline." Elena tried to assure her.
"Yeah I am, but it's okay." Caroline gave them a reassuring smile, "You know, it's all good, I'll be fine. But I just need some time to wallow in it."
"I'm with Caroline on this one." Faye added after Caroline, "My birthday is no go for me."
Elena huffed before glancing between the two girls and her eyes brightening up due to the idea she got, "Okay, well I think I have another idea."
__
"This is creepy." Bonnie told Elena as they stood inside the Salvatore crypt they had broken into, "Even for us."
Elena had decided the best way to spend Caroline's actual birthday and Faye's belated one in the cemetery. It was creepy, even creepier because they were in the dark. Faye was a little bit scared, not liking the idea of being somewhere where ghost could attack.
"No, Caroline was right..." Elena glanced over at the blonde vampire standing next to the petite hybrid, "technically, she's dead and so is Faye." She shrugged at the two girls, "Sorry. But you two don't need a birthday, you need a funeral. You need to say goodbye to your old life, so that you can move on with your new one. Which one of you wants to go first?"
"Okay, I will." Caroline stepped up and looked around the crypt, "Here lies Caroline Forbes-"
Elena broke out the cake and some candles and began placing the bright pink ones in with every word she said, "-Cheerleader, Miss Mystic Falls, third grade hopscotch champion..."
Bonnie stepped up and smiled at her friend, "...friend, daughter, overachiever..."
"..Mean girl, sometimes, no offense." Matt added.
Caroline waved her hand, "Ah, none taken."
"Also, she was the biggest sap in the universe." Faye interjected, getting a slap in the shoulder from Caroline who just laughed. Elena finished putting in the candles on one side of the cake for Caroline before moving on and grabbing a different color for Faye.
"Also in this crypt lies Faye Daniels." Elena started, moving her gaze towards the strawberry blonde, "Genius, volunteer, the world's most badass hybrid-"
"That is the truth."
"-alpha, pack mom, a caring friend-"
"-very bad at math-"
Faye pointed at Matt, giving him a playful glare, "Watch it Matthew."
Elena smiled at the two girls before her as she finished placing all the candles, "Caroline was seventeen and Faye was only eight and they both had a really good life. So rest in peace, so that they can move forward." She looked up at Faye and Caroline. Caroline was smiling as was Faye, but the strawberry blonde had tears of joy welling up in her eyes, "That's what you really need. What we all really need." There was a beat before Elena clapped her hands together, "Amen, or cheers or whatever. Bonnie?" She glanced over at the witch who lit up the candles with her magic within in seconds, "Nice! Okay, make a wish."
Elena held out the cake to Faye and Caroline. The two creatures of the night glanced at each other before shutting their eyes and blowing out the candles together, making a wish. As Faye blew out the right side of the cake, her wish ran through her mind.
I wish everything would turn out okay.
__
After about an hour of the tequila bottle being passed around and Faye eating most of the small cake, the others not wanting as much as her, the strawberry blonde was drunk and weepy. Her head rested against Caroline's shoulder, her phone in her hand as she stared at her phone screen. She had set her background as a picture of her and Tyler from after the full moon. Caroline had taken the photo of Faye hanging on to Tyler's back as they both smiled at the camera. It was a sweet picture that made Faye's heart break even more.
Making the spontaneous decision to text him about how they were celebrating her and Caroline's birthday, she sent it without thinking twice. As she did so, she was caught by Elena.
"Faye, what are you doing?" The doppelganger asked the hybrid.
"What?" She attempted to act natural, "N-nothing."
"You might be a good sober liar, but you're a horrible drunk liar." Elena narrowed her eyes, expecting a true answer to her question.
"Whatever I did, I can tell you I did not text Tyler."
Elena sighed, disappointed, "Faye..."
"What?" Caroline jumped to defend her strawberry blonde best friend, "She's fragile."
"Give her a break!" Bonnie suddenly shouted out, startling everyone in the crypt, "You can't control what everyone does all the time."
"Wow." Elena muttered, staring at the Bennett witch.
Matt spoke with wide eyes, "Ouch, Bon."
Bonnie huffed and shot Faye and Caroline a apologetic look, "Sorry, I know it's Faye and Caroline's birthday, funeral or whatever but, I just feel it's really wrong that you compelled Jeremy to leave town." She said to Elena.
Faye frowned, suddenly becoming sober at the mention of one of her pack mates leaving, "You compelled Jeremy to leave town?"
Elena ignored Faye's question and responded to Bonnie's statement, "I'm doing it to protect him, Bonnie. I want to give him a chance to have a quiet normal life." Faye understood it completely, knowing Jeremy would not just leave Elena alone so she had to chose compelling him to leave town to keep him safe.
"He should be able to choose how he wants to live it, you're taking his choices away." Bonnie told Elena.
Elena shook her head at the witch, "Bonnie, you can't tell him."
"Why? Are you gonna compel me not to?"
Faye gaped at Bonnie's outburst, not surprised that she had it in her, but that she would talk that way to Elena. They seemed like they would always be great friends no matter what. Matt looked between the two girls who were fighting and gave them his best bitch face, "You know, you guys are ruining a perfect funeral."
"I'm sorry." Bonnie said after she took a second to calm down, "I'm just gonna go sleep it off or something. Happy birthday." She told Faye and Caroline before getting up and exiting the crypt.
Faye looked at the exit Bonnie ha taken before grabbing the bottle of tequila that had been set down in between the group of five, which was down to four, and handed it to Elena who took it and took a long, drawn out, swig of it.
Time went on and the four sat in the crypt just drinking, the feeling of the room now so tense, Faye could probably could only slice through it with her claws and nothing else. It got even worse when footsteps sounded throughout the crypt and Tyler appeared in the doorway.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to crash the party." He said awkwardly to the four sitting on the floor of the crypt.
"So don't." Matt said disapprovingly.
"No, it's-it's okay." Faye jumped to her feet, quick to greet Tyler, "Hi."
"Can I talk to you for a sec?" He asked nervously, "It's kind of important."
Faye nodded, not taking his nervousness as a somewhat warning, "Sure." He nodded before leading her out of the crypt and into a part of the cemetery where no one could eavesdrop on them. Faye stood in front of her, her hands stuffed in the pockets of the jacket she was wearing.
"I take it all back." Tyler told her with a small shake of his head, "Everything I said this morning. Klaus can't control me. Not when it comes to you. I won't let him."
"Tyler..." Faye breathed out sadly, "It's okay. Maybe we just weren't meant to be together. Maybe we just have to accept that and move on."
"I'm not moving on from anything." The male hybrid exclaimed, "I love you."
Faye's eyes widened with shock as she stood there, not expecting that. She could feel herself melting at the three words she had never heard before and never truly understood them, but now she did. She swore she heard her undead heart take a small beat, like she had become fully alive at his words.
The strawberry blonde rushed forward, pressing her lips against her fellow hybrid's who in return wrapped his arms around her slim waist. He pulled her close, kissing her passionately. Faye could feel the love for her radiating off of him. She didn't say it back because maybe, she wasn't there just yet, but she would eventually be.
They continued on, the kiss leading to a full make out session with Faye's back pressed against one of the trees inside the cemetery. Tyler's lips trailed down to her jaw before finally ending on her neck where he began to suck. As she let out a gasp in pleasure, it turned into one in pain as what seemed to be Tyler's fangs piercing her throat. Faye quickly pushed him off of her when he did that.
"Ouch! What happened?" She asked, confused. Her hand traveled up to the wound he had created that was not healing, to her surprise. Faye felt the two puncture wounds and narrowed her eyes at Tyler, "Did you just bite me?"
"Oh my god." He rasped out, backing away from her, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." He suddenly sped away from Faye, leaving her alone.
The wound had still not healed and fresh blood still ran from it, unlike it usually would. Faye began feeling woozy and weak while she stood on her feet. Her head began to spin as she pulled her hand away to look at her hand which was coated with her blood.
"What the hell?" She asked herself before the world went black and she collapsed to the mossy ground below her.
__
When Faye woke up again, she was staring straight into the face of her dead parents who looked at her harshly. She couldn't hear all of what was coming from their mouths clearly, but she had heard some. They had said something along the lines of that their death was their fault.
"No, I'm sorry, daddy." Faye muttered out, not knowing what was going on truly, but knowing that her parents now hated her, "I didn't mean to. She made me."
"It's all your fault!" Her mother screamed out at her and Faye let out a piercing cry.
"No it's not! You said it wasn't!"
"We lied."
Her father's voice changed and his facial features faded into the ones of Matt Donovan who held her in his arms, "Faye, hey. You're okay."
"Matt?" She asked, her vision blurry.
"It's me." He told her, "Caroline's here too." Faye turned her head, seeing the blonde running up to the Daniel's home door with a worried look on her face and knocking loudly.
"Lacey!" The blonde vampire shouted. The door was quickly opened by the strawberry blonde's aunt who rushed out the door at seeing Faye.
"What happened?" Lacey asked, her voice shaky.
"She went with Tyler and then we found her with the bite mark on her neck." Matt explained, his voice fading in and out for Faye, "I think he bit her."
"She's reacting to it like a vampire would." Caroline informed the centuries old vampire in front of her.
Lacey cursed under her breath, "It's that fucking curse!" She yelled out, "No wonder she couldn't heal Damon when he had the bite. Because the damn bite affects her. That witch did this to her."
Faye heard that loud and clear, her head lagging as she tried to glance over at Lacey, "I hate that witch." She muttered, cuddling closer into Matt's chest."
"I do too, sweetheart." Lacey agreed wit Faye, brushing her strawberry blonde hair out of her fair.
She instructed Matt to bring Faye up to her room. They quickly laid her down on the bed and tucked her in. Lacey stripped Faye of the uncomfortable clothes she was in, leaving her in a tank top and a pair of shorts she had changed Faye into. She then tucked Faye in and sat down beside her on the bed.
"What symptoms is she showing already?" Lacey asked both Matt and Caroline.
"I think was hallucinating in the car about her parents." Caroline said. Lacey looked down at her niece who was breathing heavily. Faye had beads of sweat running down her forehead and she could barely open her eyes.
"Lacey." Faye rasped out to her, "It's my fault mom and dad are dead. I killed them. I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault, hun." Lacey responded, leaning down to kiss her forehead, "It was never your fault." Faye nodded and seem to fade out again, falling asleep.
The three surrounding the hybrids bed looked at her sadly. Lacey got up and clenched her fist tightly, knowing exactly who did this, but also knowing he could be the only one to save her.
"I gotta' call Klaus." She said, before getting up, "Watch her." She told the pair of teenagers before going downstairs and collecting her phone to call the man she used to call her friend.
__
Klaus arrived soon enough, standing in front of the screen door of the Daniels home. Matt stepped up, looking at him angrily. The blond teen crossed his arms over his chest and kept his glare trained on Klaus. Lacey stood behind him, the same expression on her own face."
"I was already on my way over here when I got your call." Klaus said smugly, "Tyler came to see me. Poor boy, he seemed quite distressed, he said Faye had a terrible accident."
"You made him do this to her." Matt hissed, "He would have never done something like this."
"I'm here to help, Matt. My blood will heal her." Klaus glanced over at Lacey, "May I come in?"
Lacey did not let him in just yet, "What do you want in return for healing her?"
"Just your support." Klaus said honestly.
Lacey finally gave the Original hybrid a nod of approval to come in. Klaus opened the screen door and stepped inside. He passed by Matt and Lacey led him up to Faye's room. Caroline stood outside the room and moved past Klaus quickly, not wanting to look at him.
Faye was turned on her side, facing the doorway of her room. Her hallucinations had stopped finally after an hour of being tortured by her parents and the people she had killed before. She glanced up when Klaus and Lacey entered. Lacey Left the room to speak with Matt and Caroline, still monitoring with her vampire hearing.
Klaus looked at her, taking in her beauty, Despite the fact she had turned paler than she usually was and looked sickly, she still was the most gorgeous thing that had ever walked this earth.
"Are you here to finish me off?" Faye asked, breaking his thoughts, "I feel like you would love to do the honors yourself."
"On the day of your new birthday?" Klaus asked her, having heard about it from Tyler when he came running to him, "Do you really think that low of me?"
"Well, you are practically satan." Faye retorted, not losing her sarcasm despite her sickness. Klaus let out a soft chuckle and walked towards her. He pulled the comforter that she had pulled up to her chin down to exam the bite mark Tyler had given her on the right side of her throat. It was puffy and irritated and still gushing blood, along with some puss. To a normal human, it would be classified as beyond infected.
"That looks bad. My apologies, you're what's known as collateral damage, it's nothing personal." Klaus told her. He gained a fond smile as he looked at her, "I love birthdays. I remember yours, love"
"Of course you do. You saw me nearly naked. Probably the best day of your, I don't know, billion year old life." Faye said, "Do you even still have a birthday?" She asked, confused.
Klaus cracked a grin at her words, "Well you have to adjust your perception of time when you become a vampire, Faye." He said, "Celebrate the fact that you're no longer bound by trivial human, well in your cause wolf, conventions. You're free."
"No, I'm dying." Faye deadpanned, her voice weak.
"And I could let you die, if that's what you want." The Original hybrid said, moving to sit down on the side of her bed, "If you really believe your existence has no meaning. I thought about it myself, once or twice over the centuries, truth will be told. But I'll let you in on a little secret. There is a whole world out there, waiting for you. Great cities and art and music, genuine beauty." Faye stared at him, he reyes not actually full of hate like they usually would be, but wonder and admiration. It was shocking to actually see it, "And you can have all of it. You can have a thousand more birthdays. All you have to do is ask."
Faye thought about what he said for a moment, thinking it all through. He was giving her a choice. She could die now and miss everything she could have done with her immortal life, but end the suffering she was going through by fighting against him or she could live and suffer, but look forward to graduating and traveling around the world with her pack and the man she loved, whoever it was at the time whether it be Tyler, who she hoped it was, or someone else.
"I don't wanna' die." She said to Klaus.
Klaus nodded and scooted her over so her could sit down on the bed next to her. He lifted her head and bared his wrist to her, "There you go, sweetheart. Have at it."
Faye hesitated before baring her fangs and driving them into Klaus' wrist. She took pulls of blood by the second, hoping to heal the wound that would cause her to die. Klaus brushed back her hair and watch her. The moment between them was intimate and Klaus would savor it.
The strawberry blonde hybrid finished and unlodged her fangs from his wrist. Klaus let her go, gently laying her back down on to the bed. She glanced up at him.
"I guess happy birthday once again, love." He said to her before turning around and beginning to walk away. As Klaus did so, he swore he heard a soft thank you coming from the small form on the bed. He smiled.
__
Faye woke up in the morning feeling as good as she usually was. The sun shined brightly through the curtains of her room and onto her bed. She sat up and looked over her bedside table to check the time, only to find a small blue velvet box sitting there with a note tied to it. Faye furrowed her eyebrows together and picked it up.
The strawberry blonde flipped the note, reading the simple name that was written. Klaus was printed in elegant script and it tempted her to toss the box back down, but she guessed she owed it to him (something she never thought she'd say again) to look inside.
Faye opened the box, revealing diamond bracelet that Caroline would probably die for. She stared at it for a while, shocked he would give this to her at all. They hated each other, or at least they were supposed to.
Faye shut the box again and set it back down on the table, shaking her head. She slid back down into bed and covered her head with her blanket. The world was obviously ending. Klaus was being nice and when was Klaus ever nice without reason? Never. He always had an ulterior motive.
The hybrid closed her eyes, wondering what the hell was actually happening.
