THIRTY ▶ IN THE MIDDLE
Stefan and Rebekah were both missing, Klaus wasn't dead, and she was possibly on a break with Tyler; could her life get any worse?
The news had overwhelmed her the night before and tired Faye out to the max. All she wanted to do was have a normal life and complete her senior year so she felt like she had accomplished more than just being an alpha hybrid.
Faye sat in the booth at the Grill, her head buried in her math textbook as she attempted to study. She was attempting to avoid Tyler (the Grill might not have been the best place to hide from him, but it was working so far). She was also attempting do something normal and didn't include planning on murdering someone.
Her hair was pulled back out of her face as she ran a highlighter over an equation she did not understand and needed to learn about. She would consult Elena about it later. Faye did not look up as someone slid into the seat across from her the same time she highlighted the equation.
"Amnesia, drink with me." The words left Damon Salvatore's mouth.
Faye shook her head, "No, thank you."
"You look like you need it." Damon said to her, "You're actually doing math. You hate math." Faye glanced up at him, her face emotionless, "What happened to you last night?"
"Tyler drugged me." Faye hissed out in a low voice. Damon's jaw tensed, "He said he was "protecting me". If he wanted to protect me, he should have helped us kill Klaus."
"We should go kick his little hybrid ass right now." Damon attempted to stand up, but the hydrid reached across the table quickly and pulled him back into his seat, "What?"
"We're not going to do anything. I'm going to avoid him, be kind of normal, and wait until everything blows over." Faye told him, smiling slightly at him, "And we're also going to go look for Stefan."
"I don't want to."
Faye raised her eyebrow at the raven haired vampire across from her, "Why not?"
"He stopped me from killing Klaus. He's the reason that bastard still even walks this Earth."
The strawberry blonde let out a long sigh and buried her face in her hands, "He stopped you?!" She shouted in a whisper, "Why the hell would he do that? He wanted Klaus dead as much as the rest of us."
"Well, Klaus did give him back his freedom for it. Maybe dick!Stefan is selfish." Damon said bitterly.
Faye huffed and slammed her head down against her textbook, creating a loud noise, "Klaus isn't dead, Stefan's a runaway and he betrayed us, Rebekah's gone and Lacey's asking questions. Let's not forget my boyfriend is a minion for Klaus."
Damon held out his glass of bourbon to her and she took it, knocking back quickly without even batting an eyelash. He grinned at her as she handed him back the empty glass.
"So, will you drink with me now?" Damon asked her.
"Nope." Faye told him, "Now, go away, I'm trying to do study."
Damon whined before sliding out of the booth and walking back to the bar to sit next to Alaric. Faye sighed and turned her head back to look down at the textbook in front of her.
Time soon passed on and Faye gave up on studying. Math only made her more agitated than she already was, so she walked over to where Damon and Elena were together. Elena was attempting to call Jeremy after discovering he was failing his classes and lost his job at the Grill. She was more than pissed off when he wasn't answering and began yelling down the phone at him. Damon drunkenly played darts as he listened to her and offered Faye to play against him. She took the chance.
"Jeremy, the minute that you get this call me!" Elena growled into her phone before hanging up and turning towards the two members of the Daniels pack with a frustrated look on her face, "Unbelievable!"
"You are feisty when you are mad." Faye said as she tossed a dart at the board, making a bulls eyes. Damon low fived her with a smirk playing on his lips before going his turn.
"It's not that I'm mad. I'm just—I'm worried." Elena replied to her statement.
Damon let out a soft sigh, "But why? He lost his job at the Grill. He can survive, Elena." He turned to face her and stopped the game of darts. Faye placed her darts back on the board before walking back towards the pair.
"He is spiraling." Elena said, "Ever since Bonnie broke up with him, he is moody, he is not really talking to anyone."
"It's typical teenager." Faye told her.
"Who's seeing ghosts and has lost everyone that he cares about."
Damon shook his head at the doppelganger, "Not everyone. He still has you." He had a genuine expression gracing his features. Faye smiled.
Elena furrowed her eyebrows at the vampire, a look of concern crossing her eyes, "You okay?"
"What makes you think I'm not okay?" Damon countered.
"Well, you're daydrunk." Elena told Damon, "It's not exactly your most attractive look."
Damon smirked, stepping closer until they were barely nose to nose. Faye rolled her eyes at him.
"Hmm- what is my most attractive look?" He asked the oldest Gilbert.
Elena placed her hand on his chest, pushing him back only a little bit, "Ah, ah- I'm not saying you have any attractive looks. I'm saying this is my least favorite one..."
"Noted. See if I can make any improvements."
Faye suddenly caught the scent of the other man she had hoped to avoid for the rest of her life. She turned her head, looking over towards the top step that led down to another part of the Grill. He smirked at her and she scoffed.
"Don't mind me." Klaus said, attracting the attention of both Damon and Elena.
"Klaus." Elena said, her tone flat.
"You gonna do this in the Grill? In front of everyone?" Damon asked the Original hybrid, "It's a little beneath you, don't you think?"
"I don't know what you are talking about. I just came down to my local pub to grab a drink with a mate." Klaus glanced back at a man who had just walked up. He was obviously a hybrid from the scent Faye got off him. A shocked expression cross Elena's face, "Get a round in, would you Tony?" He asked his lackey. The hybrid nodded before walking away towards the bar.
"I'm surprised you stuck around town long enough for happy hour." Damon said to Klaus.
"My sister seems to be missing. Need to sort that out." Klaus replied, glancing over at Faye for answers.
"Cute blonde bombshell, psycho." Damon began, "Shouldn't be too hard to find."
"Tell me if you see her because Lacey's been up my ass because she's MIA." Faye added right after that.
Klaus clicked his tongue and stepped down on the the same level as them, "Truth is I've grown to rather like your little town. Think I might fancy a home here." Faye's jaw tightened at the thought of him staying there, "Oh I imagine you're wondering how does this is affect you. The answer is: not in the slightest. Unless I get what I want and everyone behaves themselves you can go on living your little lives however you choose. You have my word."
"What more could you possibly want?" Faye asked, stepping forward towards him.
Klaus ran his eyes over her body, indicating something Faye was not sure about, but then spoke answered her question, "Well for starters, you can tell me where I might find Stefan."
"Stefan skipped town the second he saved your ass." Damon informed him.
"Well you see that is a shame." Klaus said to the Salvatore vampire, "Your brother stole from me. I need him found so I can take back what's mine."
"Sounds like a Klaus and Stefan problem." Faye retorted.
Klaus stepped up to her, but Damon pushed himself in front of the strawberry blonde so he couldn't reach her. The older hybrid grinned and chuckled, "Well this is me broadening the scope, sweetheart."
__
"I can't stand him!" Faye yelled over the phone to Caroline as she walked around town, looking for Stefan. She had checked the woods, the boarding house and even the Lockwood cellar for him, but he was nowhere to be found. Faye had the feeling Klaus would hurt one of her pack members if she didn't find her emotionless best friend, so she had to do so. Though, she was having no luck.
"Klaus?" Caroline asked over the phone.
"Yes. Klaus." Faye said as she walked back over to her car that was parked in front of the Grill once again. She walked over the the driver seat and yanked open the door before sliding into the seat herself, "He is the only man I have ever met that I actually want to tear his heart out and then dance on his grave."
"Don't you think that's a little harsh?" Caroline asked. Faye narrowed her eyes even though Caroline could not see her.
"Are we talking about the same guy here, Care?" Faye questioned, turning on her car and shutting the door., "Klaus ruined everyone of our lives at some point and how long have we known him, for like half a year. He killed Jenna, turned Stefan into the ripper again and turned his emotions off, made Tyler his minion, and daggered my god-father. He completely deserves it."
"But do you remember how he carried you after you got upset on your birthday and helped you and hung out with you that night in the motel when you had nightmares." Caroline added, the tone in her voice showing a bit of admiration. Faye had told her about her times on the road trip with Klaus and even despite the fact Klaus was an evil bastard, she swooned hearing how he treated Faye nicely and did things for her, "That shows there is something redeemable in him."
"Caroline, there is nothing redeemable in that man." Faye replied. She pulled out of her parking spot and began making her way towards the her home.
"Are you sure? If you saw something in Damon that makes him redeemable, there has to be something in Klaus." Caroline responded.
"Damon's different from Klaus though." Faye said, "Klaus does thing for the hell of it. Damon is bad for a reason."
Caroline sighed, "I guess that's true." She said before changing the subject, "Any luck finding Stefan?"
"No. I tried calling him five times and nothing. I'm honestly really worried about him." Faye bit her lip.
"I'm sure he's okay, Faye. He's a big boy." The hybrid could practically hear Caroline's smile of assurement across the phone.
Faye sighed softly and nodded, "I know. It's just, this isn't normal Stefan. This is impulsive, no humanity Stefan."
"Don't worry about him Faye. You have enough on your plate right now."Caroline told her as Faye pulled up to her house within minutes of leaving the Grill. She parked her car in the drive way before stopping the car and getting out.
"I'll try not to." The hybrid said, "I'll talk to you later."
"Alright, bye."
The two hung up the phone and Faye stuffed hers into the back pocket of her jeans. She walked up to her house and opened the front door, letting herself in. Lacey was already there since she could hear her messing around in the kitchen. Lacey's favorite pastime was to cook which was great because Faye's favorite pastime was to eat. They went together like two peas in a pod.
"Thank god." Faye said when she walked into the kitchen, seeing Lacey pull a casserole out of the oven, "I am starving."
"Starving or so stressed out you have to eat?" Lacey asked with a smile playing on her lips.
"The second one." Faye walked over and grabbed a plate from the cabinet and made herself a plate. Along with it she made herself some tea with the herbs she was forced to take. When she was finished, she sat down and dug in.
Lacey sat across from her slowly eating her food unlike Faye. She glanced up at her niece and sighed, "So, why are you stressed? Is it because you tried to kill Klaus and he lived?" Faye gaped at her, not knowing she knew about it, "Klaus came by, telling me you're friends tried to kill him and then asked where Rebekah was."
Seeing the disappointed look on her face, Faye sighed, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
"I'm not mad that you didn't tell me." Lacey told her, "I'm just a little mad you keep putting yourself in dangerous situation."
"Well, I wasn't in this one." Faye muttered, "Before I could do anything, Tyler drugged me and made me miss half of homecoming."
Lacey raised her eyebrows in shock, "He what?!"
"Drugged me. He thought he was protecting me from Klaus." Faye said, now playing with the remaining parts of her casserole, "We're on a break now." She looked down sadly.
"Sweetheart." Lacey reached over and grabbed Faye's hand, "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. I kind of knew it was going to happen when I figured out he was sired to asshole Klaus." Faye told her.
"No wonder you wanted to kill Klaus so bad." Lacey said to her, snorting, "If he had a hold of my boyfriend, I would kill him too."
Faye cracked a grin and let out a small laugh. Lacey returned it.
"I'm glad we can do this now. Actually talk." Lacey told Faye with a smile. Faye glanced up at her aunt, "I missed you." She looked fondly at her niece. Her hand tightened around the strawberry blonde's.
"You'll be careful for now on, right?" Lacey asked her, "I get you're going to do dangerous stuff, but make sure you'll come out alive."
"Oh, you know I'll always come out alive. I'm badass."
Lacey reached over and slapped her arm at her cockiness. Faye playfully winced before hitting her right back, laughter ringing throughout the Daniels home, something that seemed that would never happen again since the year of 2000.
__
After a call from Damon during her bonding time with her aunt, Faye found her rushing towards the Gilbert house in full speed, arriving at the same time as the said man who called her. Klaus had gone after Jeremy to get back his family coffins, which Stefan stole. Alaric was killed instead of Jeremy in the process, but the difference was Alaric was going to come back since he was hit by a hybrid's car, unlike Jeremy who did not have his ring on.
"How is he?" Damon asked when the two walked in the door, their eyes landing on Alaric who laid on the couch, his shirt torn and his hair a mess.
"He's dead, but he had his ring. Klaus's hybrid hit him." Elena looked down at her guardian and sighed, "Now we just wait."
Faye walked over towards the youngest Gilbert who stood on the sidelines and looked at him concernedly, "You alright?" She asked, patting his cheek lightly.
"I'm fine." He responded with a small smile.
"Why weren't you wearing vervain?" Faye then asked him, glancing down at his bare wrist where his bracelet that Stefan had given him would be, "Where is your bracelet?"
He shrugged, "I don't know."
"It was Tyler!" Elena exclaimed. Faye whipped her head around to look at Elena, her face falling, "It had to have been. That's why he was hanging out with you. To get you off the vervain." She said to Jeremy.
"Klaus is trying to send us a message." Faye revealed to the two Gilberts, "He wants us to find Stefan who stole his coffins full of his dead family members."
Elena frowned, "Coffins?"
"Yep!" Damon said, "So all we have to do is find four coffins and- voila no one else on your family's Christmas list needs to die!"
Jeremy scoffed at the raven haired vampire, "Wait- that's your big plan? To steal back four dead originals so this evil hybrid doesn't kill me and everyone else we know?"
"You got a better idea?" Damon countered.
"Yeah!" Jeremy shouted, "Let's get the hell outta here! Pack our bags and go!"
"Sounds pretty appealing to me right now." Faye muttered under her breath.
"Hey, Jeremy calm down." Elena attempted.
"No, no!! I'm not gonna calm down, Elena!" He yelled out, "This happens every time, no matter what we do! Get on my case about school and work- who cares? None of us are gonna make it out of this town alive." The teenager took his leave and stormed upstairs to his room. Faye let out a sigh, knowing he was completely right.
Elena looked up at the path her brother took to leave before gaining a pensive expression, "He said he wants his family back."
"No! No!!!" Damon protested, pointing his finger at the doppelganger, "I know what you're thinking- the answer is no!"
"If we give him Rebekah..."
"Wait, you guys have Rebekah?" Faye asked.
"Yeah."
"And you didn't tell me?" She asked, her eyebrow raised at Damon.
Damon sighed, "It wasn't very planned out. Either way though, we should have told you, I'm sorry." The apology was genuine, so Faye accepted it. She could now tell Lacey what happened to Rebekah so she wouldn't worry about her friend.
"Back to the subject at hand. If you give him Rebekah, then Klaus undaggers her, first thing she does is kill you!" Damon told Elena, "Frying pan, fire- not an option!"
Elena furrowed her eyebrows again, not responding to Damon, but instead coming up with a new thought, "Klaus's coffins..." She looked over at Damon and Faye, "How many did you say they were?"
__
When Faye had given Elena an answer for how many coffins there were, she immediately called Bonnie about the dreams the witch had been having, now knowing what they were probably about. Bonnie then revealed Stefan's whereabouts and the trio including a hybrid, a vampire, and a Petrova doppelganger rushed to the witch house.
"I thought Bonnie said this place lost all it's mojo." Damon said as the three of them walked towards the witch house. Faye still got chills from jut looking at.
Elena shrugged in response, "The dead witches were angry at her for bringing Jeremy back to life. I guess now they have something they want her to know."
"I hate witches. So fickle..." Damon scrunched up his nose as the stepped on to the porch, "Passive aggressive..." They entered the house together and Faye looked around, seeing nothing had changed. Stefan was definitely there though, seeing she could detect his scent.
"Stefan?" Elena called out to her boyfriend, well ex-boyfriend.
"Come on, Stef. Olly Olly Ox and free." Damon called out after her, walking into an area where sunlight shined down into the wrecked house. His skin began to burn, just like the last time, "Aaah. Ow. Ugh." He rushed into a dark corner and Faye snorted, amused, "Really?! Still?!"
"What?" Elena asked him.
Faye grinned, "The witches aren't his biggest fan. They like to mess with his ring."
"Then wait outside." Elena instructed Damon.
Damon sighed, "Elena..!"
"I'm not leaving until I know if he's here." Elena told him before going further into the house. Faye decided to stay behind with Damon until she knew she needed to go downstairs with Elena. The two went outside and listened in on Stefan and Elena's conversation. He basically refused to help them save Elena's family and the doppelganger came out with tears in her eyes.
"That didn't go over well." Damon said to her.
"Don't even start, Damon!" She yelled right back at him.
"Let us talk to him." Faye told her, stepping towards Elena.
"Damon can't get in!" Elena responded, "The witches won't let him."
"Here. Take my car keys." Damon told Elena, handing her them. She glanced down at them before looking back up, "You go deal with your brother, I'll deal with mine." Elena nodded slowly before going over to his car.
Damon glanced over at Faye when Elena was out of sight. The hybrid held out her arm for him and brought him close to her. She took no time to speed them both inside, hoping to avoid spots of sunlight so Damon would not burn. Throught the groans of agony, Faye managed to get them down the basement of the witch house where Stefan sat in a chair in the empty room. Faye let go of Damon and stared down her packmate.
"Wow! That was impressive." Stefan said, standing up from his seat, "But the coffins aren't here, so... You can go away now."
"I don't care about the coffins." Damon rasped out as he recovered from the burns he had gotten. He stood up straight, only to go into sunlight and burn even more. He stepped out of the way quickly.
"We need to talk." Faye told Stefan in an authoritative tone.
"Okay, let's talk." Stefan said.
"Nothing's ever easy with you, is it?" Damon hissed. He rushed at Stefan and sped up the stairs with him before Faye could react and stop him. She quickly sped outside, seeing the eldest SAlvatore kick the youngest to the ground, grab a branch, and drive it through Stefan's stomach.
"Damon!" Faye shouted at him. She didn't dare stop Damon though, knowing Stefan needed that.
"That is for screwing up my plan!" Damon shouted at Stefan, "You stop me from killing Klaus and you steal his family! Why?? Doesn't make sense!" There was no response, "Answer me!!"
"Piece by piece Klaus took everything from me. I'm doing the same to him." Stefan finally answered.
"But I had him, Stefan!" Damon continued, "Why did you screw it up?"
"I did it to save you."
Hearing that, Faye finally intercepted and yanked Damon off of Stefan. She backed away from the two on the ground.
"What do you mean, Stef?" She asked him.
"He was one step ahead of us." He said, tearing the branch out of his stomach, "If Klaus died, his hybrids would have killed Damon." Stefan told Faye. Her expression softened hearing that.
Damon stood up and picked up branch once again, "I want you to get it through your head." He drove the branch right back into Stefan's abdomen, "Stop saving me!" The vampire sped off, leaving Faye and Stefan alone. Faye rushed over to Stefan and yanked the branch out once again for him and throwing it aside. She looked down at the green eyed vampire and sighed before speeding off to find Damon.
__
The two returned to the witch house once it was dark. Faye had spent time trying to cool Damon down and stopping him from going back and actually killing Stefan.
"Do you know what I can't figure out?" Damon asked Stefan as the two walked up to where Stefan was leaning against the pillar outside, "Why save me? Was it brotherly love, guilty conscience? Is the switch on, is the switch off?"
"Don't you two have somewhere you need to be?" Stefan canted his head to the side at them.
"Deflection." Damon called out, "That's not gonna work on me! I invented that."
"We're done." Stefan said, "Can't you just go away?"
"Not until you tell us why you saved this dweeb." Faye glanced over at Damon, "You owe him that much."
"I don't owe him anything."
Faye huffed, "Fine. Next question. Why did you steal the coffins?" She asked.
"Because Klaus's family is one weakness I can use against him." Stefan said, walking forward. He stopped to lean against a tree in front of the witch house.
"Use against him to do what?" The question left Damon's mouth as soon as Stefan answered Faye's, "You're not gonna kill him, you know how I know? 'Cause there was only one way to kill him and you blew that to save me."
"You're wrong Damon." The youngest Salvatore countered with what he thought was the truth, "Klaus isn't just get to just live forever. There's another way. There has to be."
"Fair enough. But whatever you're doing I'm want in." Damon said.
"We." Faye corrected, "We want in." She was not going to pass by on another chance to kill Klaus, the bane of her existence.
Stefan glanced between the two of them before turning around and beginning to walk back towards the witch house, "I don't need your help."
"Really?" Faye quirked an eyebrow at her best friend, "Last time I checked you're hiding in a haunted house."
"I'm in this alone, Faye."
"You're go after Klaus you have to be cutthroat and devious." Damon said to his brother, "I'm so much better at that than you. Even Faye is and she's a little ray of sunshine." Stefan wasn't changing his mind, "Come on brother. What do you say? If you're gonna keep saving my life at least make it for a good reason"
"You want in?" Stefan asked them both.
"Yeah." Damon and Faye said in unison.
"Then it's just us. Elena stays out of it."
"Deal." Faye took no time to answer.
"Follow me." Stefan turned to walk towards the witch house once again the two behind him sending each other a look. Damon's was uneasy.
"Wait. I'm not so..." Stefan did not stop despite Damon's words, "Welcome in there."
"Don't you worry Damon. We all want the same thing." Stefan assured him. They all started towards the witch house and went inside. Faye and Damon followed Stefan down to the basement where there was nothing in the room, but shelves lined with simple jars and old amulets.
"Have a look." Stefan told them.
"What?" Faye questioned with a frown, "Is Klaus allergic to dust or something?"
"Hm." Stefan said, amused, "Look again."
Faye turned her head back towards the room, seeing the four coffins she had once traveled around with. She knew Elijah, her godfather, was daggered in one of them. She looked shocked to see them.
"Witch spirits hate Klaus as much as we do. They're using their powers to hide the coffins." Stefan explained to the two next to him.
"So even if he comes into the house..."
"... he won't be able to find them."
Faye's shocked expression slowly twisted into a sinister smile at his words, knowing they finally had something over Klaus they could use to take him down.
