THIRTY FOUR ▶ DANCING WITH THE DEVIL
Storming into the Mikaelson Manor the minute she heard the bad news probably wasn't the best idea.
When Faye had woke up that morning hearing the news of Klaus' mother returning from the coffin she was locked in and not killing him, Caroline's father dying, and Alaric getting stabbed in the gut, she had begged Lacey to just end her life now. Life never went their way and someone always got hurt in the process.
Though she turned livid when she heard Rebekah had attacked Elena, hence the reason she was storming into the Mikaelson manor in her pajamas and her fangs threatening to pop through her gums. It was the second time that Rebekah Mikaelson screwed with her pack and Faye wasn't going to let it slide.
"You went after Elena?" Faye roared as she came upon four of the Mikaelson, two she didn't really know the names of, preparing for something . Klaus stormed into the room at the exact same time as her, them both in sync and yelling at Rebekah for the exact same thing, "What is wrong with you?!"
Rebekah let out a heavy sigh, "Here we go." She said, while the others peered curiously between the fuming strawberry blonde and the Original hybrid. Elijah's theory of the two being so much alike was proven by just that.
"Are you in your pajamas?" Rebekah questioned her flannel shorts and tank top she wore.
"Stop trying to avoid the subject." Faye hissed, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Do you want another dagger in your heart?" Klaus asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Again with the dagger threats?" One of the other Originals stepped down from the platform he was standing on to get his suit tailored and glanced over at Klaus, "Don't you have any other tricks?"
Klaus scoffed at him, "Oh, go back to staring at yourself."
"And who are you, my father?"
"No, Kol, but you're in my house." The Original hybrid countered.
"Then perhaps we should go outside." Kol suggested to Klaus. The two had a stare down before an older woman walked in, her chin pointed upwards.
"Enough!" She shouted, causing everyone's heads to turn towards her, "Niklaus. Come." The hybrid obliged, following the older woman into the room, sending Kol a nasty look. Faye followed them with her eyes, guessing the woman had to be his mother.
When the two were gone, Faye's head snapped right back in Rebekah's direction, "I can't believe you. You're out of your box for a day are you screwing my pack members." She snarled at the blonde sitting on the couch with a woman attending to her nails.
"Elena deserved what was going to happen to her." The blonde countered. Faye's lip curled and she was prepared to attack, but Elijah stopped her.
"It's been dealt with." He said in an authoritative tone. Faye pursued her lips, nodding. She wasn't going to attack Rebekah in front of Elijah, but she possibly could do it another time around.
As the subject changed to another, Kol smirked at Faye, holding out his hand for her to take, "Kol Mikaelson. Lovely to meet you." He introduced himself with a suggestive grin.
"Faye Daniels." Faye refused to take his hand, dismissing it. Kol flashed a mock hurt expression at her when she took Finn's hand after he politely introduced himself.
The teenage hybrid walked over to Elijah, who had dropped the two shoes he had been holding. She picked them up herself and began comparing them, "What are you hooligans up to?" The hybrid asked.
"Our mother is throwing a ball for our return as a family." Elijah informed her, "One you'll be attending."
"I don't know." Faye kept her eyes on the shoes, "I don't have a dress. Or a date. Or the ability to last through a dance without having to whoop some vampire ass."
"If you're in need of company-"
"No." Faye shut down Kol before he could finish. She then passed the shoes back to Elijah, "Darker one. I think it'll match more." Elijah nodded, agreeing with her, "So, now, I'm going to go before anymore of this ball talk. I haven't even had some breakfast yet due to my blind anger rush here to murder Rebekah."
The hybrid waved her hand at them before using her vampire speed to disappear from the home and be in her car before even a second passed.
__
It took Faye about an hour to return home due to her pit stop at Caroline's to check up on her. She knew the teenage vampire would be a mess after what happened to her dad and needed a shoulder to cry on. After spending about forty minutes there with Caroline, she had gone home finally.
Faye got ready for the day and had her mug of O negative with Lacey. She then sat herself in front of the TV and started up one of the shows Damon said she needed to watch to make it in the real world.
As she was in the middle of an episode, her phone let out a loud beep, alerting her she had a message. She paused her show and scrambled to grab her phone. One missed voice message flashed across her screen, covering her lockscreen background which was her, Stefan and Damon. She quickly played it and pressed it to her ear for her to hear.
"Faye, it's Tyler. I know I should have called sooner, I just kinda freaked out and didn't know what to say." Faye sighed and rubbed her forehead as she continued to listen, "But I heard about Caroline's dad and can you tell her I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I'm out doing what he said. I'm gonna fix myself and come home to you. I love you." The voicemail ended, causing Faye to bite her lip and end the listening process. She dropped her phone beside her, her mood hitting an all time low.
Her wallowing was interrupted by the doorbell ringing loudly throughout the house.
"Go answer that will you?!" Lacey shouted from the kitchen to Faye.
The strawberry blonde hybrid let out a loud sigh before hopping up and making her way towards the front door. She opened it up only to find no one there, but a box and two envelopes. Faye frowned and picked them up before going back inside, kicking the door shut behind her. She moved into the kitchen where Lacey was cooking muffins for caroline and her mom.
"We've got mail." Faye said before sitting down the box and envelopes. She passed the envelope that was not attached to the box and had Lacey's name on it to her while Faye tore her own off the box. They both opened it.
"Oh brother." Faye groaned when she read the print on the card addressed to her, ""Please join the Mikaelson Family, this evening at seven o'clock. For dancing, cocktails and celebration."" She looked over at Lacey, seeing the something on the back of her invitation, "There's something written on yours." She told her. Lacey flipped hers over as Faye did the same, wondering if she had something. Sure as hell she did, seeing an elegant script printed on the back.
Save me a dance. Fondly, Klaus.
Unlike Lacey who was smiling at her note, Faye had her nose scrunched up in annoyance. She moved on from the envelope to the box that had been sent to her most likely by Klaus. She hoped there wasn't someone's head inside as she untied the ribbon wrapped neatly around it and slid the maroon colored top off.
A turquoise colored dress sat inside of the box, shocking Faye to the max. She slowly lifted out the strapless dress, both her and Lacey admiring it. The bodice was kept simple, but the skirt flowed out and the first half of it was drizzled with small jewels.
"That is one fine piece of clothing." Lacey whistled as she went to grab the invitation that Faye had gotten. She read the back, her eyes widening, "He bought this? For you?"
Faye couldn't even reply, too shocked to answer. She couldn't believe Klaus had the nerve to go and do something like this. And deep down, she kind of liked it.
Quickly shaking off her surprised state, Faye folded up the dress once again nicely and placed the lid back on the box. She then turned and went upstairs, wondering what the hell was going on.
__
"It's all so weird." Faye ranted to Elena and Caroline as she sat with them at the Grill. When she had gotten a call from the brunette, asking her to meet her at the grill, she was all for it. She did not want to be in the house near the dress Klaus had given her or Lacey who wanted to talk about it, "The Originals are throwing a ball. Like an actual ball and Klaus wants to save me to save him a dance."
"It's some twisted Cinderella fetish is what it is." Caroline responded before looking over at Elena, "And why does the Evil Witch want an audience with you?"
"I have no idea. There's only one way to find out." Elena said.
Faye frowned at the doppelganger, "I thought you told Damon and Stefan that you weren't going."
"I did, which is all the more reason why I need drama free bodyguards." Elena replied, looking between the hybrid and vampire sitting across from her.
"Well, I think a Salvatore would look a lot better in a tux." Caroline said to Elena, "And by that I mean Stefan."
"Uhh, I can't deal with either of the Salvatores right now." Elena groaned out, "Whatever Stefan is feeling, he is channeling it all against Klaus. And Damon..." She shrugged, "It's just not a good idea."
"Why, cause you two made out?" Caroline asked. Elena raised her eyebrows in shock, "Faye spilled the beans." In retaliation for being told on, Faye slapped the girl's shoulder, earning a soft yelp in return.
Elena let out a heavy sigh and gave Caroline an apologetic look, "I was gonna tell you. Just, after everything happened with your dad...."
"Elena, when you and Matt kissed for the first time freshman year, you called me the second it happened. And now I don't hear about this til now, and from somebody else." Caroline's eyes darted over to Faye who held up her hands in surrender.
"I'm sorry. It's just I, I don't even know how I feel about it yet." The doppelganger stuttered out a reply, "All I do know is that it just used to be so much easier."
"Careful Faye." The three girls in the booth turned their heads to see Rebekah walking up with an envelope in hand and a smirk on her face, "It's all well and good until she stabs you in the back."
"Ugh, go away." The hybrid muttered.
"What are you doing here?"Elena asked the Original, "I know your mom's rules. No hurting the locals."
Rebekah pursued her lips and grimaced at her, "Get over yourself Elena. It's not all about you." She walked away from the trio and over to the bar where Matt was working. Faye listened in closely, hearing the words "date" and "ball" slip out of the blonde millennium old vampire's mouth.
"Oh my god." Caroline gasped out, turning back towards Elena, "She's inviting him to the ball. Why is she inviting him?"
"Probably to get this reaction from us." Elena glowered.
Faye's plans to not even get near the ball were changed when she saw Rebekah get her chance to corrupt poor little innocent Matt Donovan, "What time is this stupid dance?"
__
Getting ready for the ball wasn't that hard. She slipped on the dress Klaus had given her because it was the only appropriate one she owned, a pair of black gloves and some black heels she borrowed from Lacey. She pinned the top of her hair back and left out bits and pieces to frame her face while her makeup was done by Lacey, who went for a bit darker look than Faye normally would.
With a black shawl wrapped around her arms, Faye stepped up to the Mikaelson home with Lacey by her side. Lacey had chosen a ruby red strapless dress which had basically the same cut as hers, but it was more simple. The older vampire made it rock though.
"Ready?" Lacey asked Faye.
"Let's do this." She responded, picking up her skirt and beginning to step through the open doors of the home. The hybrid and her aunt stepped into the front foyer which was filled with people to the max, all dressed elegantly. Faye wasn't surprised that they basically invited the whole town.
Faye's shawl was taken by the two men waiting the door, both not compelled which surprised her. They did the same with Lacey's before the two stepped further into the crowd.
"Looks like they went all out." Lacey muttered, looking around the room.
"I really hope I don't have to kick ass tonight. Your heels are too pretty to get blood on them." Faye said, gaining a laugh from Lacey, "So this is where we part, I'm guessing."
"I'll come find you later." Lacey responded before pressing a kiss to her nieces cheek and going to find her own date.
Faye let out a sigh and picked up the skirt to her dress so she wouldn't trip on it. She made her way towards where most of the people crowded, hoping to find one of her pack members. Instead she ran into Kol.
"Darling, don't you look lovely." Kol grinned at her.
Faye rolled her eyes at him, dropping her skirt, "What do you want?"
"Just came by to say hello to the most gorgeous one here. I did see a beautiful blonde earlier, but you upstage her in my books." Kol flirted. Faye gave him a tense smile, "In need of company?"
"Not yours, sweetheart." Faye reached up and patted his chest before moving around him.
"I can see why Nik likes you. You are a bit of a spitfire." Kol called out to her. Faye scoffed and kept moving on from him.
When she had successfully escaped the newer addition to the list of the "banes of her existence", she sighed and walked into another room, looking around. Her eyes landed on Klaus who stood not to far from her, admiring her from a distance. It wasn't long before he began moving towards her.
"Good evening." He greeted her, grinning.
Faye ran her eyes over his body. She wasn't going to say it out loud, but Klaus looked good. It was that he always looked ugly or anything, it was just he looked more appealing to her. He looked like he wasn't an evil mastermind trying to murder all of her friends.
Her eyes widened as she heard her own thought and pushed past Klaus, "I need a drink." Before she could even grab one from one of the passing by waiters, Elijah's voice rang throughout the hall.
"Uh, if everyone could gather, please."
Faye followed the sound of his voice, ending up in the front foyer. The Mikaelson family gathered up on to one of the staircases. Stefan and Damon stepped up beside her and Damon glanced down at her.
"Look at you Amnesia. You look great." Damon complimented her.
Faye smirked up at him proudly, "I know." Damon cracked his own smirk and they both turned her attention towards Elijah.
"Welcome, thank you for joining us." Elijah said, "You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it's tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance." Faye's gaze moved from him when she saw his mother, Esther, walk down the stairs from the corner of her eye.
"Do you see who I see?" Damon asked his brother and Faye.
"Oh, yeah." Stefan replied, keeping his eyes trained on her.
"Tonight's pick is a centuries-old waltz, so if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom." Elijah finished his statement before everyone began to part and go find a partner. Esther slowly went back up the stairs, Elena, who stood not to far from the trio, made her way to go after her. Damon went to stop her while Faye and Stefan went their separate waves.
Faye was trying to avoid getting anyone to ask her to dance, not particularly up for it, but Klaus had to show up and offer his hand, "May I?"
Faye glanced him up and down, trying to decide whether or not to take his hand. Seeing as he did give her a dress, she decided to thank him by letting him have that.
"Just one dance." Faye told him, slipping her gloved hand into his bare one. He smiled at her before leading the strawberry blonde out on to the dance floor.
Everyone who had a partner lined up in the middle of the ball room, getting into the correct position before the music played. Klaus turned his head, admiring Faye once again as she kept her eyes trained on the people in front of them.
The music began, Ed Sheeran filling the room loudly. Faye was surprised by their choice due to the fact it was something she didn't believe it was the kind of music the Mikaelson would particularly enjoy. Klaus guided her through the steps as they turned to face the other line of people and switched.
As they did so, Faye forgot who Klaus was for a moment. He wasn't the Original hybrid anymore, he was someone completely different and someone she was able to accept to be in her life. Faye made the mistake of looking over at Klaus, catching his eyes. Her heart fluttered for a moment, causing her to unlock her eyes from his and move her gaze towards the ground. She didn't understand the feeling she was getting, but immediately reminded herself that she wasn't Cinderella and Klaus was definitely no prince charming.
They turned towards each other, getting into the normal dancing position. Faye moved her hand to rest against the fabric of Klaus' suit. Their eyes connected as his hand slipped to rest on her waist and they intertwined their hands together.
"I'm glad you came." Klaus told her as they danced.
"I didn't have much of a choice." Faye replied, her eyes darting towards Rebekah who danced with Matt. Her eyes then moved towards where Lacey was dancing with Elijah. She smiled, glad to see them together. From the way Elijah and Lacey both talked about each other, they were good friends.
"How are your hallucinations?" Klaus asked concernedly.
"Don't." Faye told him with a shake of her head, "I don't want to talk about them ever again."
"Very well." Klaus responded. He gave her a once over before speaking again, "On to more mannered subjects then, like how ravishing you look in that dress."
"I'm not always prepared for a ball like everyone is in this damned town." Faye replied to him.
He then glanced down at the hand resting on his shoulder, "And the bracelet I gave you, what's your excuse for wearing that?"
Adorning her wrist was the diamond bracelet she had received from him the morning after he had saved her from Tyler's hybrid bite. She looked over at it, not replying. Truth was, she liked it. It was one of the first birthday presents she remember receiving, the second to be exact while Tyler's charm bracelet was the first.
"You're quite the dancer." Klaus changed the subject for her.
Faye managed a genuine smile, "Stefan taught me." She answered, recalling the times when her and Stefan spun around the parlor room of the boarding house. Faye had wanted to learn because Damon had said if she didn't know how to, Mystic Falls was going to eat her up. She coaxed Stefan into teaching her.
Klaus smiled in return at her. Their time together was cut short by Klaus having to spin Faye into another person's arms. Matt Donovan caught her expertly.
"Don't you look handsome, Donovan." Faye gave him a wolfish grin.
"You look nice too, Faye." He complimented her with a polite smile.
"What are you doing here with female Satan?" She asked him as they twirled together.
"What was I supposed to say, no?" Matt responded with his own question, "And why the hell are you here with Klaus?"
"Don't even get me started, Mattie." Faye replied, letting out a large sigh. She glanced over at Klaus who was now dancing with Lacey, who seemed to be giving him a mouthful.
They danced together for a bit longer before Matt had to spin her back to Klaus and he gained Rebekah once again. Klaus and her did not speak, but they stared at each other as their dance ended. Faye left him in the ballroom before he could say anything and made her way towards the double doors of the home, deciding to get herself some fresh air and think about things.
__
Faye ran her hand along one of the horse's snots, giggling when they neighed loudly at her touch. She missed being around animals all the time in the forest. It comforted her too be around something that was close to something to her old home.
"You like horses?"
Faye turned her head at the sound of Klaus' voice. She moved back from the horse and crossed her shawl covered arms over her chest, "I'm not talking to you until you tell me why you invited me here." She told him, "And if it's to get to me, I have sharp ass four inch heels on my feet I am not scared to drive into your eyeballs if you try something."
"I fancy you." Klaus revealed. Faye's eyes widened, surprised. Klaus liked her, something she kind of knew, but she didn't know the feelings he had were genuine. She thought it was all an attraction to the power she had, not her as a person.
"Is that so hard to believe?" Klaus then asked Faye when he saw her surprised expression.
"Yes!" She responded.
"Why?" Klaus took a step towards her, the moonlight shining down upon him, "You're beautiful, you're strong, you're full of light. I enjoy you."
"Too bad." Faye immediately said, not wanting to hear anymore, "I'm spoken for. By Tyler."
"But I thought you two ended things."
"We did." Faye muttered sadly. They never got back together, despite how they kissed the night he left town, "Because of your sire bond with him."
"So you aren't spoken for." Klaus moved closer to her. She glanced down, not wanting to meet his gaze. He looked towards the horse she had been petting when he had come out to speak to her, "You know, horses are the opposite of people. They're loyal." At the word loyal, his gaze darted towards Faye who was now looking up at him, but soon moved it back, "My father hunted me for a thousand years and the closest he ever came was the day he killed my favorite horse. He severed its neck with a sword as a warning."
"I get your dad was an asshole, believe me I know. He tried to tear out my heart." Faye cringed thinking of the moment, "But, did you ever consider sitting down with your father and talking it out?"
"I'm afraid my relationship with my father is more complex than you think." Klaus replied.
"Maybe." Faye shrugged, "I wouldn't know. I wasn't in your life and I don't have a real relationship with my father I can remember to compare it to."
"And to answer your question, yes, I like horses." Faye continued on, "But I also like people and they actually like me so I'll be inside." She turned and walked away from Klaus, leaving him alone once again.
__
Time went on and Faye managed to avoid Klaus for a while until it reached time for Esther to give a toast. The Original witch had everyone gather up around the same staircase. Klaus and Faye stood side by side, staring up at his mother.
"Good Evening, Ladies and Gentleman. Waiters are coming around with champagne." Esther gestured towards the grouping below. Klaus grabbed one for her and him both. Faye took it, smiling appreciatively at him, "Invite you all to join me in raising a glass. It provides me with no greater joy then to see my family back together as one. I'd like to thank you all for being part of this spectacular evening. Cheers!"
"Cheers." Faye echoed quietly, clinking her glass with Klaus'. They both took a sip from their glasses. When everyone was said and done, Klaus gestured for Faye to follow him, saying he wanted to show her something.
"So what did you want to show me?" Faye asked as he guided her into a room full of art. They stepped up to one of the tables with a landscape hanging above it.
"One of my passions." He turned his gaze towards the painting hanging on the wall as did Faye.
"Oh. Impressive." Faye nodded approvingly, "I take it the curators at the Louvre aren't on vervain."
Klaus chuckled, "Yeah, well that's their mistake."
"What about this?" Faye held up her wrist and pointed towards the bracelet he had given her, "Where'd you steal this from?"
"Well, that's a long story." Klaus told her, "But rest assured it was worn by a princess almost as beautiful as you."
Faye mockingly rolled her eyes at him before turning her attention towards the papers littering the table. Sketches of what reminded her of the renaissance ages where Leonardo Da Vinci thrived with his art and his inventions. She looked down towards the corner of the page, seeing a familiar handwriting and a name.
"Wait a minute." She muttered before holding up one of sketches to Klaus, "Did you do these?"
"Yeah, um..." Klaus looked down bashfully. Faye smiled brightly at him, "Actually one of my landscapes is hanging at the Hermitage, not that anyone would notice. Have you been?"
"I was a wolf for ten years of my life and the two years that I can remember that I wasn't, I was here and then traveling around the east coast with you." Faye answered, "So, no."
"I'll take you." Klaus offered, causing Faye's sarcastic manner to drop and her glance softened, "Wherever you want Rome. Paris. Tokyo?"
"Oh." She breathed out, "Wow." The two of them laughed together. Suddenly, Faye's demeanor changed as she realized once again who she was sharing a nice moment with.
"Must be really nice to just snap your fingers and get whatever you want." Faye said to him, "Is that why you collect hybrids? A little servant army to take you places and bring you things."
"You're making assumptions." Klaus nearly growled at her.
"Then why do you need Tyler?" The strawberry blonde questioned, "Stop controlling him. Give him his life back."
The Original hybrid now glowered at her, "You know, this has been a fun evening, but I think it's time for you to leave."
"I get it." Faye realized as she stared at him, "Your father didn't love you, so you assume that no one else will either. And that's why you compel people or you sire them or you try to buy them off." She unlinked the bracelet she wore and handed it over to Klaus, "But that's not how you gain loyalty. That's not how you make a pack. You don't have any true loyalty because you don't even try to understand the people you want it from." She sent him one last glare before storming out of the room and out of his home, leaving him slightly angered and confused.
__
Later that night, Faye sat on her bed in her pajamas, her phone pressed to her ear. She bit her lip as Tyler's phone went straight to voicemail, saddening her.
"Tyler, it's me." She began after it beeped, "Look, I'm grateful for what you're doing, but..." Faye held back her tears to the best of her ability, "I miss you. And I really wish you were here." She hung up, wiping the stray tear from her eye.
Faye glanced around her room, finally noticing another velvet box placed on her bed side table that hadn't been there when she had gotten into the shower. She knew it was Klaus due to the fact it was identical to the one the bracelet had been in.
"Seriously? Just give up already." She muttered before reaching over and grabbing it. Faye slowly opened the box, only to not find a piece of jewelry, but a rolled up piece of paper. She frowned before plucking it out and unraveling it.
A sketch of her earlier at the ball was on the piece of paper. Klaus had sketched every detail of her moment with the horse outside. She ran her finger over the pencil marks creating her hair. After she took in the art, her eyes drifted down to the corner of the paper where he had written something.
Thank you for your honesty -Klaus.
Faye's lips parted in a silent gasp, not knowing how to react. She finally got up, moving over to her vanity. She slid the paper into the corner of the mirror, allowing her to see it everyday. Faye shyly smiled at it before moving back towards her bed and collapsing on it in need of sleep.
