SIXTY TWO ▶ BUILD A HOME
chapter sixty two
❧ ❧ ❧
Lacey Daniels loved her family. Not the one she was given at birth; not the mother and father who married her to the cruelest man in their village and then lied about her brother's death. She loved her brother, Charlie, the one who tried to protect her from the cruel world and would have fought to the ends of the Earth for. She loved her brother's wife, Amelia, who she refused to accept first hand, but welcomed her as a sister soon enough. And she loved their daughter, Faye, who came of evil magic and death, but ended up being the best curse ever given.
She loved her family more than anyone could understand; except maybe Elijah himself. Lacey ran her eternal life according to their needs and desires. She followed her brother to the ends of the Earth, turned to be with him forever, left behind the love of her life to protect him. She threw aside her thoughts on werewolves and supported Amelia through pregnancy. She did her best to be a parent to Faye after she returned, even if it could have been too late.
Lacey hoped Faye knew that. She hoped it would help her forgive her when she found out she was helping a pregnant Hayley Marshall, all for the sake of her mother.
❧ ❧ ❧
"I know that birthmark," Lacey told her, the sound of the long suppressed grief rising in her voice. The last person she saw with that birthmark was six feet under, right next to her brother.
Hayley turned towards her again with desperation. She shrugged her shawl back up to cover her shoulder before asking, "How?"
"Amy said only those in the pack had them. The Crescent Wolves."
"How would Amy know?"
"Because she had the birthmark. She was a Crescent Wolf."
❧ ❧ ❧
Three minutes until the clock would hit four PM, a text sent an alert throughout Lacey's room. Her phone lit up across the room, bringing the vampire's attention. She walked over to it and glanced down at the bold text. What it said was put simply, but there was much more to the story she was sure she could put together herself.
SOS. Witches in New Orleans have me. Not much time.
The sender was a saved number under the two letter, HM, standing for the pregnant werewolf who somehow found danger. Lacey had known she would.
When the time changed to a new hour, Lacey had already jumped to action. She had packed a quick bag and was rushing out the door, only a note left behind to inform Faye of her departure. In the next hour, she compelled herself a private plane to New Orleans and had already taken off.
The city was loud when she arrived, as it always was. The Quarter floundered with parties, all with a drink in their hand. Lacey made sure to swerve through the crowd without one being poured on her, not wanting to show up to save the day smelling of tequila.
Being there brought back memories of her days with the Originals. The blonde vampire could remember her and Klaus walking the streets, scoping out a new meal for the night. She could remember her and her brother partying at the secretive night clubs, Rebekah tagging along for a good drink. She could remember her and Elijah; nothing selective, but just them, finally coming together as one in the city they built.
Lacey couldn't think about that, though. She didn't have the time to continue wallowing in the failed love she shared with him as she had for years. She was in New Orleans to protect Hayley.
She had a plan for her rescue and was on the first step of her mission; find the location of the witches in New Orleans. The best bet was Marcel, who would surely find her on his own before she would have to search him out. He had lackeys always watching, warning him of any new sightings in the city.
The Daniels waited patiently, walking around as if she were minding her own business. It didn't take long to feel a presence behind her. She smiled to herself, stopping in her tracks.
"I've barely been in this city for thirty minutes and you already sniffed me out," said Lacey, turning on her heel to face the man following her. She came eye to eye with the dark skinned man, one who's history intertwined with hers. She raised her brow at him, crossing her arms patiently over her chest.
He stepped towards her, shoving his hands in to his pockets. A cocky grin appeared on his face. "Got to make sure you don't stir up any trouble."
"And if I do, Marcel?" She countered, testing his patience. Lacey took a step closer to him.
"There will be consequences."
They stared each other down for a moment, both with narrowed eyes in intimidation. Marcel was the first to break, letting out a bark in laughter at the blonde. Lacey grinned in response, going to bring the man in for a hug.
"It's nice to see you," Marcel told her when they pulled away from the tight embrace. "You don't come down as much as you used to."
Lacey smiled, remembering when she would come in to the city once a year to drink away her worries with her old friend. He reminded her of an old time where things were once as well as they could ever get for her.
"Faye's curse broke a while ago," she revealed with a shrug, "and I had to stay in Mystic Falls to keep her under control."
"She was here a couple weeks ago, you know? She was running around with two other vampires looking for witches. Said she could kick my ass." He snorted in disbelief. Lacey knew, for certain, though, Faye could send him to the ground in a fight.
"Sounds likes her and her boys."
Lacey let out a quiet laugh as she spoke, adverting her gaze from him to the crowd around her. She knew she couldn't stay and chat long, knowing the more time that passed, the more trouble Hayley could find herself in.
There was a moment of silence before Marcel got her attention, asking, "I don't think you're here to catch up, are you?"
"I wish," she answered. "I'm here on family business. The witches still stomping around Lafayette Cemetery?"
"You and Klaus working together again?" Marcel asked with his brows furrowed together in confusion. Lacey glanced over at him in surprise to the hybrid's name. "He came in asking about witches too; one in particular, though; Jane Anne."
Lacey shifted from surprise to worry at what she heard. She could quickly connect what was happening, knowing the situation Hayley was in. She knew she needed to hurry.
"Look, is there something going on that I need to know?" Marcel questioned concernedly. "You and Klaus both come rolling in asking about witches in my city. I don't want any trouble."
"No," she assured him, "there's not going to be any trouble. They just have something we need to settle things back home. Klaus just beat me here."
Marcel did not seem calmed by the words, but he accepted them anyways. He eyed her suspiciously as he nodded.
"Alright. If you need any help, though, you know where to find me."
❧ ❧ ❧
"How is this going to protect me and my baby?" Hayley asked, shaking her head in confusion.
Lacey let out a sigh and repeated herself, "If you pretend the hybrid miracle you're carrying is Klaus', then anyone who finds you will keep you alive longer. Everyone wants a powerful hybrid on their side and will dangle anything they can find over his head."
"And what if they find out it's not?"
"I'll handle it before it comes to that." The blonde reached out across the table to grab the hand of the werewolf. "I promised to protect you and that's what I'm going to do."
❧ ❧ ❧
Lafayette Cemetery hadn't changed at all since she had last stepped foot their since the nineteen hundreds. She may have been back in the city since her and her brother had ran at the sight of danger, creating the mess that eventually allowed Faye in to the world, but she never came back to the cemetery; not after Irene.
Lacey had no problem entering, having been invited in to the sacred ground years ago. She shut the gate behind her and sighed, knowing the maze of crypts and graves would be troublesome for her. She listened to her surroundings, taking in every noise within a mile of her. She sorted through them all, trying to find what she was looking for.
A woman was speaking, giving her long monologue to whoever was listening. "Marcel may be able to keep us from practicing real magic in this town, but as keepers of the balance, we still know when nature has cooked up something new."
Lacey hadn't know the self-named King of the Quarter had gotten the strongest clan of New Orleans under his command. She placed that in the back of her mind and continued to listen, following the sound of the woman speaking.
"For example, I have a special gift, of sensing when a girl is pregnant."
"What?" She recognized Klaus' voice, almost snorting in hearing him dumbfounded.
"I know," another woman jumped in to say. "It's impossible."
"What are you saying?"
"Niklaus..."
Lacey froze at the sound of him. Elijah was there. Here she was, trying not to think about him as it would stall her, and he had shown up.
She should have expected it. They worked similarly with family matters; following them to the ends of the Earth to keep them out of trouble and make sure they are safe. When she had heard Klaus was there, she should have assumed Elijah would be as well.
Lacey did not want to go in. She had been avoiding him well ever since he returned to Mystic Falls, dodging any talk of him with Faye who would plead for them to make up. She wasn't ready to speak to him. She missed him more than anything, but she had to stay away. If she didn't, she would want to crawl back in to his arms the moment he muttered his apology and they would be trapped in the same cycle once again. Forever would they be in the pattern of running and returning with an apology falling from their lips. She couldn't keep having her heart broken.
He continued speaking as she stayed still in her spot outside the crypt, not wanting to enter just yet. His voice dripped with disappointment towards his younger brother. "The girl is carrying your child."
His words reminded Lacey who was in there; Hayley Marshall, the girl she promised to protect because of the birthmark she wore on her shoulder. Elijah may have been there as well, but he was not what mattered. She had to put aside her own issues for her.
"No," Klaus responded to Elijah's reveal, a scoff escaping him. Lacey pushed her self towards the entrance as he continued. "It's impossible."
"Vampires cannot procreate, but werewolves can," one of the other witches explained. "Magic made you a vampire, but you were born a werewolf. You're the original hybrid, the first of your kind, and this pregnancy is one of nature's loopholes."
"Well, all of that is for us to worry about," Lacey finally chimed in, stepping in to the crypt and pushing past Elijah and Klaus. Everyone, sans Hayley, looked surprised at the sight of her. She could hear the soft whisper of her name fall from Elijah's mouth, but she elected to ignore it.
Lacey took a step forward to the two witches standing front and center and spoke, "I can handle Hayley from here."
"I'm sorry?" One of the witches scoffed at her.
"You're going to hand her over to me within the next thirty seconds or I can tell our good friend Marcel you are conspiring against him," the vampire threatened calmly. The two witches glanced at each other before turning back to Lacey. "I'm sure he wouldn't take to kindly to it."
The witches murmured among themselves, making angry comments. The younger of the witches leading the group took a dangerous step towards Lacey, baring her teeth. "We could just kill you before you could get back to him," she sneered. Lacey could feel Elijah move up closer to her, going straight to protect her. "We're an entire coven of witches; what make you think you can beat us?"
"I probably can't. I would die, Lacey shrugged, "but if I did, I'm sure these two behind me won't be too happy about it." She gestured her thumbs towards the Mikaelson brothers, acknowledging their presence for their first time. "Neither would my niece, the miracle hybrid. Not to mention her friends, one of which is Bennett with more power than all of you combined. I have ties with more witches than there are in your coven." They seemed convinced at the mention of Bonnie, warily looking towards their leaders. "Come after me, and you all die before Marcel could even get to you all for using magic."
"We'll kill Hayley."
"No you won't," Lacey called them out on their bluff. "You haven't gotten what you want yet and to kill your only asset would be troubling for your cause."
The witches were silent, unable to counter with anything. The blonde vampire walked over to where Hayley stood silent and gently placed a hand on her forearm. Their eyes connected, Lacey silently asking if she were alright. Hayley only nodded.
"You're not going to win in this," Lacey said, turning around from the Marshall. "I'm taking the werewolf. Try to Marcel some other way."
"Jane-Anne," the other witched hissed as Lacey led Hayley out, a confused pair of brother following closely behind. Jane-Anne only shook her head, keeping her glare on the blonde vampire the entire time. They would win; not only against Marcel, but against her.
❧ ❧ ❧
"This is the governor's home," Klaus acknowledged when Lacey unlocked the front door to the safe house she had set up years ago. After leaving the witches, she needed a place where everything could be explained without interruption. She also did not need anyone who could use the information against them to hear.
"Formerly," Lacey corrected him dryly once she passed through the door. She waved her hand for the three behind her to follow, continuing on as she did so, "It's been mine since the fifties. It's one of my little safe houses; just in case things ever go haywire."
"I'm guessing things are finally going haywire?" Hayley muttered, glancing around the front foyer.
The blonde let out a sigh, looking towards the werewolf. "I probably should've let you stay here in the first place," she admitted. "Go and get some rest. You can pick any room except the furthest one with the french doors. That's mine."
Hayley nodded her head, moving to take her leave. It was obvious she did not want to be in the room full of an angry hybrid, and two other vampires. Klaus stopped her before she could leave, though, putting out his arm.
"I think she should very well stay and inform us all why she is claiming me as the father of her child."
"I don't care what you think. She's pregnant" Lacey informed him with an eye roll. She moved around Hayley to push down his arm, letting the girl go free. The werewolf trotted up the stairs, leaving the three to talk among themselves.
Lacey led them to the sitting room, plopping down comfortably in a chair. Neither of the Originals followed suit, rather standing to look down at her.
"So," Klaus began. "Mind tell us, Lacinia, what, in the bloody hell, that was? Why are witches trying to use a child that is not mine against me?"
"I told Hayley if she ever got in trouble, to tell the world it's your baby," Lacey quickly explained as if it were nothing. "She's carrying a hybrid child; something most people would kill on sight. If it's yours, though, she'd last a little longer so they can hold it over your head."
A look of displeasure stretched across Klaus' face. He wasn't happy at all with her plan, but it was all she could have done.
"The baby is actually Tyler's," she revealed. Anger rose in the other hybrid in the room and Lacey understood. She was carrying the product of a relationship that broke Faye's heart.
"Faye's Tyler?" Elijah spoke up for the first time since the cemetery. Lacey looked up at him, almost having forgotten he was there.
"She found out he cheated on her while he was trying to break the sire bond. Hayley was the other woman." Her eyes drew in to thin slits. "If you had been in town, you would have known."
The words she shot at Elijah took a hit. He adverted his gaze in shame. Lacey could see the corner of Klaus' lips turn up at the attack, but did his best to return to his former image of anger.
"And you're helping this girl?"
She quickly got defensive. Lacey came to her feet, crossing her arms over her chest and she stepped towards Elijah. "Believe me, I didn't want to help her in the first place," she said. "The only reason I'm doing this is because the birthmark on her right shoulder is the same one Amy had."
"Amy?" Klaus questioned. "As in Amelia? Charles' wife?"
"The one and only," Lacey confirmed. "Only werewolves from her family have the mark. They're related somehow and I owe it to Amy to keep her alive. She's all that's left of her now, besides Faye."
The room fell quiet at the confession. Lacey gulped down her the grief that continually returned at the thought of her loss friend. She had already cried for her and there was no need to do so again.
"Well, then, now that that is settled." Klaus clapped his hands together, breaking the silence. He grew a sinister grin. "I'm going to tear Marcel's head off and take back my kingdom."
Lacey turned to him in shock. She shook her head wildly, exclaiming, "Um, no! I don't need you starting crap when we're trying to lay low." "Besides, why are you taking it back when you gave it to him?"
Klaus put his hand on his chest in offense, growling lowly. "Gave it to him? He was presumed dead until I saw him walking around with his followers."
"Because of Mikael right?" The Daniels attempted to fill the gaps in the stories she heard about the Originals after she had left them. "Marcel said you ditched town after he showed up."
He glanced toward Elijah, sharing a look with his brother. The hybrid took in a deep breath of air before speaking. "Any time I settled anywhere, our father would hunt me down and chase me off," he said. Lacey knew it well. She had ran from burning villages and cities right by his and his siblings sides. "This town was my home once, and in my absence, Marcel has gotten everything that I ever wanted. Power, loyalty, family. I made him in my image and he has bettered me."
Lacey pursed her lips tightly, knowing what he wanted. "You want what he has, don't you? And you're going to take it?"
"Exactly."
"What about Faye?"
Klaus nearly stumbled, remembering the strawberry blonde he was so entranced with back in Mystic Falls. Lacey's kept her gaze on him, her eyes pouring in to him. She waited patiently for him to say something that would break her niece's heart if she heard.
"She can join me if she'd like," he stated with a shrug. "Every king needs a queen."
"Well, take over in a way that doesn't get us all killed," Lacey ordered him. "Hayley's been connected to you through the witches now. If Marcel finds out the false information we've planted and believes it, all hell could break loose."
"Well if you hadn't come up with your plan-"
"Well then you and Faye should have never sent her to me and we wouldn't be here," Lacey snarked back to the hybrid.
Klaus didn't respond, only glowering at the vampire in annoyance. He whirled around, storming out of the room in annoyance. He left his brother alone with her, the two not shocked by his departure.
Lacey darted her eyes over to Elijah, huffing. He was staring at her intently, almost as if he were ready to say something she knew would make her want to vomit. With that one look, she took her leave as well, heading straight towards the wine cellar.
"I need a drink."
❧ ❧ ❧
He hadn't even said a word and Lacey wanted to vomit. She had told Faye she was waiting for him to come to her and now there he was, ready to apologize and she did not want to hear it. She wasn't ready to hear it.
Lacey threw back another glass of wine, the bitter sweet liquid travelling down her throat with ease. She had gone through three already, trying to calm her anger with Klaus and whatever she was feeling towards Elijah. It wasn't anger; she had stopped being angry at him for leaving long ago. It was more sadness as she longed for him, but pulled herself back knowing what would happen.
She went to refill her glass again, but decided against it. She instead took a full swing from the bottle. Lacey let out a refreshing gasp as she removed the bottle from her lips. Her wrists came to rest on the edge of the balcony she occupied, the bottle of wine still tight in hand. The stars shined down on her, keeping her and her misery company until another joined.
"Lacinia," her named passed his lips, almost as it had in the crypt. She shut her eyes tight, letting out the deep breath of air she hadn't even realized she had been holding.
Lacey did not turn towards him as she said greeted him. "Elijah."
He did not move any closer, keeping the spot he had taken behind her. "You stood up to Niklaus well. Not many can do so."
"I was with you all for over three hundred years. I have experience with his fits," she replied. "Plus, he wouldn't hurt me when he finally has Faye."
There was a smile to be heard in his voice as he spoke. "Of course."
The air grew silent between them. It felt heavy on Lacey's shoulder as she waited for the bomb to drop. She knew he couldn't keep it in any longer, the guilt he had pushing it out of him.
"Lacinia, I wanted to apologize-"
There it was. She knew it was coming and she wasn't even prepared.
"Don't," Lacey cut him off quickly, turning to face him with her hand held up. She didn't want to hear him spot the words that would make her fall all over again. "Not right now."
"Then when?" He sounded exasperated. Elijah step forward, coming to stand right in front of her. "You've been avoiding my presence ever since I returned to Mystic Falls."
"For a reason," Lacey scoffed out. "You left, Elijah. You freaking left when I finally thought it was our chance. It was finally working for us and then when Klaus got staked, you ran for the hills."
Elijah didn't have a thing to say. He kept his eyes down in shame, listening to how he had damaged her.
"I understood," she continued saying. There were tears welling up in her eyes, she could feel them. "I had to leave when Charlie and Amy died and Faye shifted. After we buried them, it took me a while to come back." Lacey could remember the month she had spent hiding away in New York, not leaving the penthouse she had until she shook herself out of it and returned for her niece. "But I eventually did to look for Faye because she was going to come back and she did. Klaus came back too and you stayed gone. Why didn't you come home?"
Tears hit her cheeks and before she could stop him, Elijah had reached up to wipe them away. She glanced up at him, seeing his stricken face after taking it all in. They loved each other and it was breaking their hearts being pulled away. She waited for him to say something, anything to make her feel better.
"I didn't want to return after I had hurt you," he explained with hesitation. "I knew I would only keep making the same mistakes and we would stay in the same cycle of heart ache."
Lacey bit down on her lip, shaking her head at him. "You say it like it was only yourself. If it's not you running, it's me," she said. "After you apologize, I'll take you back and then something else will happen for me to skip town."
"No, that is not what will happen." His hand went to cup her cheek, pulling her much closer to him than before. Their eyes connection, the two seeing each emotion swimming through their irises at the time. Longing; guilt; love.
"Lacinia," he began, "it does not do us well to part and it must never happen again. I love you. I vow that I will not run and I will do everything in my power to keep you happy."
"Elijah..."
"This will be our time."
Lacey wanted to desperately believe what she was hearing. She could feel herself being pulled to forgive him, agree that they were finally going to be together forever. She couldn't accept it, though, knowing their past. They always came back together and were torn apart; no matter how well they thought things were going.
She pulled out of his hold, walking away from him towards the other edge. Her hands went to grip at the railing as she let out huff.
"Do not make promises you can't keep," she told him.
Elijah clicked his tongue in frustration, moving back to her. "I cannot try to keep them if you will not let me."
"You're staying here, Elijah." She faced him again. "I have to go back to Faye in Mystic Falls. We can't work if we're in two different towns and will be for the rest of our eternal lives. You follow your family and I follow mine."
She did not let him speak any longer before grabbing the bottle of wine she had put aside. Lacey left the balcony, leaving behind her own apology and a heart break of her own.
❧ ❧ ❧
Lacey should have known after her and Elijah's first words shared in months her niece would be calling. Her name and photo showed up on the phone, resting on her bedside table. The vampire sighed before answering it.
"Hello?"
"Lacey Daniels," Faye's voice came through with demand. "You go and kiss Elijah right now or I'm coming to New Orleans and knocking sense in to all of you."
Elijah must have called her and given her the run down of their talk. Lacey ran her hand over her face and sighed. "Faye, you don't understand-"
"No, I understand. You won't be with Elijah because your scared of being selfish because every time you are you think it ends tragically, so you are running to Mystic Falls and using me as your safe haven," the hybrid rambled, huffing and puffing with each word she said. Lacey heard her groan and throw herself back on to what must have been a bed. "What is up with you two and running away from each other?"
"I want to be with him, believe me. I've wanted him for four decades," Lacey told her, shaking her head. "It just never works out."
"Do you know why it never works out?" Faye asked rhetorically. "Because of family. Family controls you both to the point where you can't even deal with the life outside of it. Dad was in danger so you ran from him the first time, then dad and mom died so you both separated. You never go for what you want and when you do, something always happens with your family and you throw all your attention towards them."
"You're a kid. You don't know what you're talking about."
"I may not have all of my memories or been around you longer than two years, but I know you and I know Elijah."
As much as Lacey did not want to admit it, she was right. The older woman brought her lips to a thin line and kept her mouth shut. She chose her family over everything, just as he did, and it was sending them both down the wrong path.
"Be selfish for once and be with man you love."
Lacey couldn't agree to it just yet. There was too much at risk. "And what about you?" She asked. Her voice waved as she nearly cried for the second time that night. "I just got you back and I would leave you behind. Someone needs to guide you through life."
"Lacey, it's ten years too late for someone to parent me." It was the harsh truth and they both knew it. "I raised myself in the wild and I think since my curse has broken I've learned enough to get through eternity. If not, I know who to call," Faye assured her with a grin making it's way in to her words. "I'm not even on my own. I have my pack and I'll be in college soon too with a roommate who makes sure I wake up on time for class."
"I don't know what to say."
"You don't need to say anything." Faye let out a watery chuckle. Lacey was sure the girl was nearly in tears at this point, as was she. "I love you and want you by my side forever, but you don't have to be. I'll be fine. Go be in love."
"What if something happens again?" Lacey questioned. "What if we fall apart?"
"Work through it like normal people."
"Okay."
"Wow, I thought it'd be a lot harder than that to convince you."
"Shut up."
"If I find you in Mystic Falls anytime soon without Elijah at your side, we're going to throw down."
Lacey laughed at her niece. A bright smile adorned her face as she finished up the conversation, feeling much better than before.
"I love you, Faye," she said.
"I love you, too." Faye went to end the phone call. "I'll talk to you later. Got to get back to Elena torture."
"Wait, what-"
"Byyyeee."
Faye's voice was replaced by a dial tone and Lacey hung up her phone. She tossed it on to the bed, leaving it behind as she went out the door of the room. She kept her breath even in attempt to calm her nerves. Lacey was one fire at the thought of it finally being it. No more running or fighting.
She entered the sitting room where she knew he was. Elijah sat in an arm chair, contemplating the same things Lacey had, she was sure. The hand that stroked his chin paused when he heard her enter. He looked towards her with hope. He had no doubt heard the conversation she had shared with Faye.
The Original stood up from his seat, their eyes leveling.
"Lacinia-"
"I'm going to stay in New Orleans," Lacey told him. She walked towards him, closing the large space he had kept between him. Her hands reached for his, fiddling with them as she spoke, "and we can both work on keeping your promise together. If that's alright with you?"
Elijah did not say a word, but she knew his answer. A light had returned to his eyes at the sight of her. He took her face in his hands and pressed his lips to her in swift motion. She immediately responded, taking him into her arms because it was their time. It was finally their time.

As Lacey and Elijah reunited, on the other side of the city, the witches circled around one of the ancient grimiores passed through the coven. Sophie Deveraux glanced over at her sister, her breath held in her throat.
Jane-Anne flipped open the book, a smirk adorning her face. "Irene, you are going to save our coven."
