SEVENTEEN ▶ THE FIRST HYBRIDS
Faye's eyes snapped open when she heard crashing downstairs. She could hear Stefan's and Damon's loud snores coming from each of their rooms, alerting her that they were still asleep.
She rushed to get dressed, seeing that she couldn't fight anyone in just her underwear. After she was ready, she rushed downstairs, trying to find the threat.
Faye walked towards the front foyer, her claws extended in case there was someone trying to attack. The door was wide open and in the doorway stood-
"Elijah?" Faye asked, surprised. She slowly let her claws shrunk back into her hands. Her green eyes met his dark brown ones. She couldn't tell how he was feeling right now.
Faye turned to look at Elena, who was holding the dagger, "You are absolutely nuts!"
"You were thinking it too!" Elena countered.
"But I knew Stefan and Damon would have my head if I let him out." Faye slammed her forehead against the wall, "And I thought Klaus was going to be the one to kill me, but no! It's going to be tweedle dee and tweedle dumb."
Elena sighed, "Faye, we need his help. He knows Klaus."
"Because he will willingly tell us everything after you stabbed him in the chest." Faye spat out sarcastically.
"Can someone please tell me what happened?" Elijah butted in to their conversation.
Faye spun around, placing her finger over her lips, "Shhh!" She whispered, "The Salvatores will wake up and cause hell if they hear you." She looked around frantically, "We can't do this here. Any ideas where?"
"The Lockwoods." Elijah suggested.
"Can we trust you?" Elena asked him.
"Can I trust you?" Elijah repeated back to her, staring at the dagger in her hands. Elena sighed before handing it to him.
Faye grinned slightly, grabbing her keys off of the rack, "Great, I'm driving."
__
Faye pressed her foot against the brake in her car, stopping in the driveway of the Lockwood mansion. Elena was sitting in the backseat, watching Elijah as he drained the two blood bags Faye had brought with them. Luckily, those weren't her last ones or she would be without blood for the day.
"You look better." Faye commented, watching as the color slowly returned to her godfather's face.
He slammed the empty blood bag on to the dashboard and looked at the two girls, "Where did you get the dagger?"
"We'll tell you everything. But we have to work together, Elijah." Elena said, "I need your word."
"Yeah, because he always keeps his word." Faye muttered, causing Elijah to throw her a look.
"Your ability to make demands has long passed." Elijah said to Elena.
The doppelganger shook her head, "No demands. I'm offering you my help. And in return, I want yours."
"And why should I even consider this?" Elijah asked her.
"The same reason that you haven't killed me." Elena replied, "You need my help to kill Klaus. And I need you."
Faye's phone began vibrating in her pocket as did Elena's. Faye frowned, pulling it out and answering the call without checking who it was.
"What's the sitch?" Faye asked.
"Where are you?" Damon's angry growl came through the phone.
"Not where you are I'm guessing." Faye countered, smirking to herself.
"Faye, do not test me. Are you with Elijah?" Damon asked her.
"Of course!" Faye taunted, "Would you like to say hi?"
Elijah watched his god-daughter with an amused smirk playing on his lips. Sarcasm was her first defense, just like her parents.
"Listen to me right now. You grab Elena and leave because he can not be trusted." Damon told Faye.
Faye sighed, "Damon, look, everyone deserves a second chance, okay? I gave you one after you choked me to death the first time we met. He may have lied and I may hate that, but he had to have a reason behind it."
"He will kill you both!" Damon yelled, enraged.
"Listen to me!" Faye yelled, "He would never hurt me because I am his god-daughter and I care about him." She glanced at Elijah, "Look, I trust him right now. We need to take down Klaus and he's the only one who knows Klaus. I will protect Elena with my life if I need to. And if you don't like my decision then suck my goddamn dick because I am old enough to make my own choices and you are certainly not my goddamn father!" She huffed, "Goodbye, Damon." She hung up the phone, glaring at it.
"Faye, you kind of..." Elena began when she hung up, looking at Faye, who had accidentally vamped out.
Faye looked at her, "What?"
"Your fangs." Elena said.
Faye sighed, "Oh." She was surprised she didn't shift in the car since she had gotten so angry. Faye inhaled softly, calming herself down. Her veins slowly disappeared along with her fangs. Her eyes went back to normal. She then looked at Elijah, "So, are we doing this or not?
Elijah held out his hands for both of their phones and Faye groaned. She slipped her phone into his hand and Elena did the same.
"He's here." Elena muttered once they had their phones.
Elijah raised his eyebrows at her, "Klaus is here?"
"He hijacked Alaric's body." Faye said, "Little prick tried to kill me."
Elijah sighed, "Of course he has. One of his favorite tricks."
"Well, what are his other tricks? What is he going to do next?" Elena questioned, "You're the only one who knows him."
"Yes, I do." Elijah opened the car door on his side and exited the car. Faye followed suit, along with Elena who trailed behind them as they walked up to the mansion.
Elijah knocked on the door. Carol answered immediately and was appalled by Elijah's burnt attire.
"Elijah, Elena, Faye! What are you doing here? What happened?" Carol asked them.
Elijah sighed, tugging on the collar of his jacket, "I've had a bit of an incident, Carol. I'm hoping you could help."
"Well, I'm on my way to a meeting, so I-"
Carol was cut off by Elijah compelling her, "It won't take but a minute of your time."
"Of course. Anything you need." Carol said with a smile.
"Thank you." The three of them entered the home and Elijah spoke again, "Well, first things first. I'm going to need a change of clothing."
"Well, we can try one of my husband's suits. I haven't boxed them up yet." Carol suggested.
Elijah smiled at the woman, "Wonderful." Carol returned it before going upstairs to grab him a suit.
Faye frowned once she was gone, "How did you know she's not on vervain?"
"'Cause I'm the one who got her off it. Right before you and your friends killed me. Twice." Elijah said. Faye and Elena looked down guiltily, "If you'll excuse me. I'll be down in a moment." He went up the stairs after Carol, disappearing into the hall.
__
Faye had thrown herself out on to the couch in the Lockwood parlor room, flipping through a book she found on the coffee table. She chuckled, seeing it was "Interview with a Vampire" by Anne Rice.
"Reading books about what the human world thinks of us is so amusing." Faye said to Elena as she read the first page, "Twilight has to be my favorite though." She snorted, "Sparkling vampires, what a joke!"
Elena rolled her eyes at Faye, "They're good books though."
"I'm not saying they're bad, they're great reads, but the view on vampires is horrible." Faye told her, "That's why I prefer the reading books the books in the Salvatore library that get the facts straight."
Elijah walked through the door at the end of their conversation, giving Faye a pointed look. She groaned, knowing what he meant. She sat up straight on the couch, making sure she looked respectful.
Elijah sat down in one of the armchairs, grabbing a cup of tea off the table. Faye did the same, sniffing for any vervain before she took a sip of it.
"So I assume that the Martin witches are no longer with us." Elijah said as he took a sip of his own tea.
Elena sighed, "No. I'm sorry."
"And Katerina?" Elijah asked, "She would have been released from my compulsion when I died."
"Klaus took her. We think that she may be de-" Elena was cut off by Faye wagging her finger at her.
"Ah, ah. I never said I thought Katherine was dead." Faye interrupted.
Elijah leaned forward, intrigued, "Why would you think against that?"
"Because, if someone ran from me for five hundred years and stopped me from getting something I wanted, they wouldn't get off that easy. I would torture them just like they had tortured me through all of that chasing." Faye said.
Elijah watched Faye as the smirk grew on her face at the thought of torturing Katherine. Her and Klaus were so much alike. Murderous, manipulative, impulsive, but they were both still so broken inside. Both had been deprived of a childhood due to something their parents caused. They both truly just wanted to be cared about, to feel like they belong somewhere.
"Faye is actually correct." Elijah stated, "It's not Klaus' style. Death would be too easy for her after what she did."
Elena frowned, "I don't understand. You say that you want Klaus dead, but you still made Katherine pay for betraying him."
"I have my own reasons for wanting Katerina to pay. There was a time..." Elijah sighed, getting a flashback, "I'd have done anything for Klaus."
Faye scrunched up her nose in confusion, "Why?" She asked, "Why would you be so loyal to him?" She sipped at her tea.
"Because he was family, my brother." Elijah concluded. Faye's eyes widened as she spat out her tea. Elena's jaw was crooked, shocked by the revelation, "Yes. Klaus is my brother."
Elena waved her hand, "I heard that. I'm still processing."
"Yes, I'm a little behind on the times, but I believe the term you're searching for is "O.M.G."" Elijah said, looking over at Faye who was trying to clean up the mess she made.
"And I thought the Gilbert family was whacked." Faye muttered, running her hand through her hair, "Was he your only brother?"
"My family was quite large and full of vampires."
"There's a whole family of Originals?" Faye asked, still in shock by Klaus being his brother.
"My father was a wealthy landowner in a village in Eastern Europe." Elijah said, "Our mother bore seven children."
Elena furrowed her eyebrows together, "So your parents were human?"
"Our whole family was. Our origin as vampires is a very long story, Elena. Just know..." Elijah leaned forward in his seat, "We're the oldest vampires in the world. We are the Original family, and from us all vampires were created."
"Right, but Klaus is your brother." Faye said, trying to still process it all, "And you want him dead?"
"I need some air. I'm still feeling a tad..." He huffed, standing up, "Dead. Come."
They all got up and began making their way outside.
__
"So as you've seen, nothing can kill an Original." Elijah said as Faye, Elena, and him walked throughout the gardens, going past the small pond, "Not Sun, not fire, not even a werewolf bite. Only the wood from one tree. A tree my family made sure burned."
"That's where the white ash for the dagger comes from." Elena deduced.
Elijah nodded, "Yes. The witches won't allow anything truly immortal to walk the earth. Every creature needs to have a weakness in order to maintain the balance."
"So the Sun can't kill an Original." Faye began as she looked at Elijah, "Why is Klaus so obsessed with breaking the Sun and Moon curse?"
"Right. The curse of the Sun and the Moon. It's all so..." He cracked a grin, "Biblical-sounding, don't you think?"
"What's so funny?" Elena asked him.
"I still find it funny that many young vampires fall for those drawings." Elijah chuckled, "But my brother was quite the artist."
"Wait..." Faye said slowly, "I don't understand. So Klaus drew the Aztec sketches about the curse?"
"Roman scrolls, African tribal etchings, and any other culture or continent we felt like planting in it." Elijah continued.
"But why?"
"Easiest way to discover the existence of a doppelgänger or to get your hands on some long, lost moonstone is to have every single member of two warring species on the lookout." Elijah said, answering Elena's question.
"So it's not Aztec at all?" Faye questioned.
"The curse of the Sun and the Moon..." Elijah sighed, "Is fake. It doesn't exist."
"What?"
"Klaus and I faked the Sun and Moon curse dating back over a thousand years." He informed them. Elena's phone began vibrating in his pocket and his jaw clenched.
"But if there's no curse..." Elena began.
Elijah cut her off, "There's a curse. Just not that one. The real one's much worse. It's a curse placed on Klaus."
"What are you talking about?" Faye asked him.
"Klaus has been trying to break it for the last thousand years." Elijah turned his gaze towards the doppelganger, "And you, Elena, are his only hope."
"What is his curse?"
Elijah pulled out Elena's phone, which was still vibrating, and tossed it to her, "Your phone will not stop its incessant buzzing. Answer it, please."
Elena answered it and pressed it to her ear, "Stefan..." His frantic voice could be heard through the speaker, "What's wrong? No. No, no, no, no. Okay, I'll be right there." She hung up the phone and looked at Elijah, "Klaus went after Jenna. I have to go to her."
"I'm afraid that wasn't part of today's arrangement." Elijah replied.
Faye rolled her eyes, "Look, I'll stay because she has to come back if she's taking my car." She tossed Elena her keys, "You have my keys and if you don't bring them back, I will hunt you down."
"I'll be back, Elijah. You have my word." Elena promised.
Elijah sighed, "That doesn't mean anything to me until you live up to it."
"Thank you." Elena then rushed to Faye's car, going to go help her aunt.
Faye sighed, walking over to the sit down on the small bench by the lake. Elijah followed suit, not sitting down though.
"You know, I'm super sorry about the whole dagger thing." Faye said, holding her head up with her hands. Her elbows rested on her knees as she looked up at Elijah.
"I heard your apology, Faye." Elijah revealed, "When I'm daggered, it's as if you're in a coma. I could still hear you."
"So, does that mean you forgive me?" Faye asked him.
"Of course." Elijah told her, finally taking the spot next to her, "How could I ever hate my god-daughter"
Faye giggled, resting her head on his shoulder, "I forgive you for lying, but that doesn't mean I'm still angry."
"Well, maybe I shouldn't have promised that Elena will come out unharmed." Elijah told her, "But she will come out alive."
Faye lifted her head up, looking at him, "How?"
"I will explain it all when Elena returns." He stood up, straightening out his suit, "Now, come along inside." Faye stood up and they both entered the Lockwood mansion once again.
__
"Welcome back." Elijah greeted as Elena walked into the parlor room.
"Tell me." Elena said, "What is Klaus' curse?" She began taking off her jacket.
"Please." He gestured for her to sit and she sat next to Faye, "My family was quite close, but Klaus and my father did not get on too well. When we became vampires, we discovered the truth. Klaus was not my father's son."
Elijah sighed, "My mother had been unfaithful many years before. This was her darkest secret. Klaus is from a different bloodline. Of course, when my father discovered this, he hunted down and he killed my mother's lover and his entire family. Not realizing, of course, that he was igniting a war between species that rages until this day."
"A war between the species?" Faye asked.
"The vampires..." Elijah continued, "And the werewolves."
"So Klaus' real father was from a werewolf bloodline?" Elena questioned, "What does that make Klaus? A werewolf? Or a vampire?"
"Oh my god." Faye muttered, "He's like me isn't he? He's both?"
"A hybrid would be deadlier than any werewolf or vampire." Elijah told them, "Nature would not stand for such an imbalance of power. Therefore the witches, the servants of nature, saw to it that my brother's werewolf side would become dormant."
"That's the curse that Klaus wants to break?" Elena asked him.
"He wants to trigger that part of him that's a werewolf." He continued, "If allowed, Klaus would sire his own bloodline. He'd build his own race. Endangering not just vampires, but everyone."
Faye shook her head in confusion, "But you helped him?"
"I helped him because I loved him." Elijah's jaw muscles were pulled tight, "That's changed, now he must die."
"We have the dagger now. We can stop him." Elena told him.
"When a werewolf is wounded by silver, it heals. An Original can't be killed by anything but white oak ash on a silver dagger. So you see the conundrum. The dagger does not work." Elijah informed her.
Faye was completely upset by this. How were they supposed to bring Klaus down?
"What, are you saying that Klaus can't be killed?" Faye asked him.
"There's one way to kill any supernatural species..." Faye and Elena leaned in closer, interested, "At the hands of the servants of nature themselves."
"A witch if they can channel that much power." Faye shook her head, "But it would kill them."
"The curse must be broken during the full moon. When Klaus is in transition. That's when he'll be at his most vulnerable. A witch with enough power..." Elijah looked over at them, "Can kill Klaus."
"What if I told you that I knew a witch that could channel that much power?" Elena asked.
"Then I would tell you there's one more thing that you should know." Elijah said, "During the time Klaus was going to sacrifice Katerina, I talked amongst witches to find somehow she could live. I succeeded."
"You found a way to save the life of the doppelgänger?" Elena inquired.
"Yes, Elena. I did." He clicked his tongue, "But unfortunately, Katerina took matters into her own hands first. I believe you already know how that played out."
Faye narrowed her eyes at him, "You cared about her, didn't you?"
"It's a common mistake, I'm told. And it's one I won't make again." He stood up and gave both girls their jackets before leaving.
__
Faye rushed in to the boarding house when she heard the sound of the Salvatores fighting. She grabbed both of them by the collar of their shirts, lifting them up off the ground.
"Are you both insane?!" Faye yelled at them, "Stop your petty boy fight!"
Elena and Elijah walked in, seeing the petite girl holding up the two grown men. Elijah bit back a laugh.
Faye dropped them both on the ground, forcing them to turn towards where Elena and Elijah were standing. Damon groaned when he saw Elijah.
"Now you've invited him in?" Damon asked in disbelief.
"Elijah and I have renewed the terms of our deal." Elena informed him.
"Really?"
Elijah stepped forward, "The two of you will come to no harm at my hands. I only ask for one thing in return."
"What?"
"An apology."
Damon gawked at him, "A what?"
"Apology. Noun." Faye said, "Definition: a regretful acknowledgment of an offense or failure."
Damon turned and glared at Faye while she smiled cheekily at him. Stefan walked forward towards Elijah and stuffed his hands in his pockets awkwardly.
"I'm sorry for the part that I played in your death." Stefan apologized, "I was protecting Elena. I will always protect Elena."
Elijah nodded, "I understand."
Elena looked at Damon, "The sacrifice is going to happen, Damon. Bonnie will be able to kill Klaus without hurting herself and Elijah knows how to save my life." She held her head high, "I told you I'd find another way. And I did."
"Is that true?" Damon asked Elijah.
"It is."
Damon turned back to Elena, "And you're trusting him?"
"I am."
"You can all go to hell." Damon stormed out of the room, causing Faye to sigh. She hated seeing either one of the brothers upset. They were her boys, she felt the need to make sure they were always happy and smiling.
"He's angry with me right now. But he'll come around." Stefan told Elijah.
"Perhaps."
__
"Damon?" Faye asked as she knocked on his door. She had decided to check on him after her shower, just to see if he was okay.
"What do you want, Amnesia?" Damon asked.
"Never going to give up that nickname, are you?" She muttered to herself, "Damon, can I come in?" She asked him.
"Sure, why not?"
Faye opened the door to the room, walking in. Damon sat on his bed, staring into his fire place intensely. She sighed, walking over to sit down next to him.
"I know you're mad right now-"
"Mad? I'm pissed that she's trusting him when he will kill her." Damon interrupted her.
Faye gave him a pointed look, "Shhh. Don't interrupt me again." Faye then continued, "I know you're mad, but you need to listen. Elijah has found a way to keep Elena alive and make sure she lives. You may not trust him, but you trust me right?" He nodded, "I trust him that he will come through for us, so trust my decision."
Damon gave her a look, "Still don't trust him."
"Okay, fine, whatever. Just do what I said." Faye grabbed his hand, smiling, "But we will survive this alright. Then we will all go to Disneyland and have the time of our lives."
"Oh god, you're never going to let that go now!" Damon cried out.
Faye shrugged, "You promised."
"And I regret it."
She laughed, nudging him, "And by the way, I really am sorry for yelling at you today."
"I didn't know you could get that mad." Damon replied.
"Well, my werewolf temper is maximized by ten thousand times with my vampire heightened senses." Faye told him.
Damon scrunched up his nose, "Oo, forgot about that."
Faye rolled her eyes and got up, "I'm tired so, goodnight, Damon."
"Goodnight, Amnesia."
Faye grinned before walking out of the room to hers. She passed Stefan's room and was about to say goodnight until she heard Stefan and Elena inside. Her eyes widened before she ran to her room, trying to forget what she had heard.
