FORTY SIX ▶ REMEDY FOR A BROKEN HEART
"You're out of bed." Lacey Daniels look up at her niece in surprise when she walked into the living room that morning, dressed and ready for whatever day she was going to have.
It had been a day since the breakup of Tyler Lockwood and Faye Daniels, one that had nearly sent an angry mob in the form of the Daniels pack to his house ready to murder. Luckily, Lacey had been the voice of reason since Faye had been wallowing in her room, crying over how she wished she could have something as perfect as Troy and Gabrielle. Klaus had come by once to ask about how the strawberry blonde was doing after he had brought her home and tucked her into bed (she had insisted he wasn't going to dare leave until she was asleep, which had been the minute she hit the pillow).
Lacey didn't even need to tell him how she was doing because he could hear her cries from downstairs. Faye was a mess to see her first boyfriend, her first love, having cheated on her with some werewolf he met and lied about when he returned to Mystic Falls. She went from angry, to sad, and to murderous within seconds and Lacey spent her day trying to make sure it was all under control and she could heal properly. She knew how to a handle a break up more than anyone, having done it with Elijah more times than she could count.
"Yeah, Bonnie invited me to go to Whittmore with her when she goes to pick up some of her Gran's stuff." Faye replied, moving to sit down on the couch with a mug of blood in her hands, "She knew I might want to tour the school before I apply."
"And you willingly got out of bed after everything you've been through the past few days?" The blonde raised an eyebrow.
"I've had my time to wallow in misery and now I got to get this post break-up process over." Faye explained to her, "There is supposedly a war brewing in Mystic Falls and I got to be on my A-game."
"I think you could take a little time off from this impending war business to get over your first break up, Faye." Lacey responded with a sigh on her lips.
The hybrid shook her head, "No can do. I've got myself to get over this whole break up business. Step number one, get drunk and cry about it, check. Step two, cry about it sober for a day while watching Disney movies, check. We are now at Step three."
"What's step three?"
"Rebound." The look on Lacey's face made Faye scoff, "Don't judge me. I can do it even though you won't. Caroline said it works."
"Maybe you should stop listening to Caroline."
Faye raised her mug to her lips, not taking the sip she needed yet, "Who else with give me awesome advice? You?"
A sarcastic laugh left her aunt as she rolled her eyes. Faye smirked wildly in response, loving to tease the woman who was basically her guardian now.
"I'm going to get this rebound over. Maybe grab them from a party or something me and Bon hit up." Faye told her, "And then tomorrow, I'll pack up the cheater's stuff and throw it in his face.
Lacey didn't want her to handle it all that way, Faye could tell by the small, disappointed sigh she let out, but she couldn't stop her, "Whatever makes you happy." She said.
"Won't make me happy, but it will do its job."
__
Arriving at Whittmore College, Faye jumped immediately out of Damon Salvatore's car, nearly kissing the ground. When Bonnie had invited her, she didn't know she that Damon was their ride and Elena would be tagging along so they could find some student to snack on since she couldn't drink from blood bags. It meant that the strawberry blonde had spent the car in the backseat next to Bonnie, trying to shut out the bickering that went on between the witch and the male vampire driving.
"I am never driving in a car with the two of you again." Faye said, pointing at Bonnie and Damon both. She stood in what seemed like one of the many courtyards of the school where a few tables sat. The two rolled their eyes in sync, giving Faye an odd thought that made her eyes widen and want to gouge her eyes out immediately at.
"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Elena questioned Bonnie, ignoring Faye.
Bonnie sighed, "If I could spell you out of wanting blood, I would, but I can't, so better you learn this now than at freshmen orientation." She told Elena with a small smile on her face in support.
"Something tells me that college isn't in my future anymore." Elena's face dropped in sadness.
Damon scoffed out loud and waved his hand at her, "Oh, stop with the pity party. If I can go to college, you can go to college."
"You went to college?" Faye crossed her arms over her chest, not believing him. She quirked an eyebrow at one of her first pack mates.
"Sure, plenty of times. I always had a thing for sorority girls." Damon smirked at them and Bonnie bulked at the raven haired Salvatore.
"You're disgusting."
"I know."
Bonnie and Damon began the usual stare down they had after every single one of their petty little fights it seemed. Faye stepped in, knowing they were supposed to go watch the professor who contacted Bonnie's class before she was allowed to tour the school, "Don't we have somewhere to be?"
"Oh, yeah." Bonnie snapped out of her hard stare and turned on her heel, "Come on." She and Elena both began walking together towards the building they were supposed to go to. Damon offered his arm to Faye with a grin on his face and she took it, letting him lead her to the classroom they would be in for the next half an hour.
The class was dull. Occult Studies wouldn't be something Faye would be interested in taking during her time in college. Her life was basically the course and she didn't want the place she would hope to feel a little normal would be infiltrated by the supernatural. The talk of the witches also bored her to death and Damon had to keep nudging her to keep her from dozing off.
After it was over, they all went there separate ways for a few moments. Damon and Elena were following after a girl they had been spying on during the lecture, making her their target while Bonnie was trying to speak to the professor for a moment to see what he had asked her to come there for. Faye stayed close to her, but was travelling down the hall, looking around and forming opinions on the school. It would be a place she would apply to, since it was close to Mystic Falls and most of her pack would be attending there. Lacey and Elijah, when he had been there, were trying to get her to apply and attend schools like Harvard or Columbia, but she wasn't sure that would be the best place for her.
Faye had been peering into one of the lecture rooms when she heard a voice behind her, "Are you stalking someone in lit?"
The hybrid turned around to see a flannel clad boy covered in moles standing behind her with a grin on his face. His skin was pale and his dark hair was spiked up, but still a mess despite the obvious time he spent on it. Faye could tell he was an awkward, lanky boy just by how he stood and how he looked nervous about approaching her. She grew a small smile on her face as she looked at him, her mind going back to one of her goals of the day. He would be a perfect candidate for a rebound.
"I'm just looking." She defended herself, keeping her smile, "Wondering if this college is worth applying too."
"Depends on what your major is. Don't come here if you wanna do drama." He grew a look of disgust on his face and Faye chuckled lightly.
"What about Nursing?" Faye asked him.
The boy nodded, "I've heard this school's good for it, but I'm a literature major so I wouldn't know." A dopey grin the strawberry blonde found adorable grew on his face as he held out his hand towards her, "I'm Hayden."
"Faye." She responded, taking his hand and shaking it lightly.
Hayden moved his hand from hers with a slight blush on his cheeks and he stuffed his hands into his pocket, "So, you seem like the fun type." He began, moving to scratch the back of his head, "There's this party my frat is throwing-"
"You're in a frat?" The strawberry blonde raised her eyebrow.
"Hey, my friend made me join and it still may be the worse decision of my life, but I am sticking it out for him." Hayden explained to her, his tone light, "But you should come around if your still here. I even have a flyer for it." He reached into his bag that hung at his side and pulled out a yellow flyer. Faye took it from his and read the title of the party.
"A murder house party?" She questioned, "Kind of sounds like a scene for a horror movie."
"I don't chose the crappy theme. I just show up." Hayden replied, causing Faye to smile even wider. She liked him and hoped that even after she may use him for a rebound, they could hang out. He seemed like the kind of guy she could get along with.
"I'll think about it." Faye told him.
Hayden beamed at her, inwardly whooping from what Faye could see in his eyes. His heart was beating a bit fast, "I hope to see you then. I would stay and chat, but I was already late for lit 101 and now I'm even more late because you distracted me."
"It's my fault now?" Faye fake gasped and held her hand over her heart in mock hurt, "I was peacefully stalking. You could have walked right past me."
He made a face at her, "Oh whatever." He playfully rolled his eyes before walking into the class, raising his hand to waive at her. She waived back before turning on her heel to go find Bonnie once again.
"Hey." Bonnie said when she walked up to her, having walked out of Shane's classroom just to see Faye finish talking with Hayden, "Who was that?"
"The person who's going to help me get over Tyler." She answered simply. Bonnie narrowed her eyes.
"Have you been listening to Caroline spout about rebounding?"
"Not a bit." Faye lied to her face, but Bonnie knew the truth and huffed, "But, hey, we got invited to a party!" She held up the flyer to the Bennett witch.
"Great!" Another voice said from behind her. Damon walked up with Elena next to him, rubbing his hands together, "The answer to all of our problems. A frat party: douche central." He looked towards the doppelganger, rubbing his hands together as if he was working up a plan, "Which is why, you'll be eating very well tonight."
Bonnie looked at him with disgust, but he didn't mind it at all and continued on talking, "So, what should we go as? Victims or killers?"
__
"There's an ax in my chest." Faye deadpanned, staring down at the fake ax sticking out of her chest Elena and Bonnie had helped her apply for the party. It was the one thing at the costume store Faye liked and thought was cool when they had gone so she chose that instead of become one of the victims of "Jack the Ripper". It was a good costume, at least it better be because she had bough a cute dress for the occasion and Damon had decided to poor fake blood all over it saying "it wasn't gory enough".
"You look so much cooler than me, it's unfair." Bonnie moaned out.
"You allowed yourself to become the victim of a ripper, don't hate on my costume." Damon pointed his finger at her, his eyes narrowed into small slits as he defended their theme.
Elena and Faye both rolled their eyes at them and continued walking up to the frat house. The large white house with the letters in Greek that Faye didn't give two shits about understanding stood more off campus. It was already full of people it seemed, seeing that some drunk college students were scattered outside, chatting among themselves. Faye could hear the music blaring even without using her enhanced hearing and she was just wondering when the cops were going to show up.
The four managed to get themselves inside the house, getting hit with strobe lights. Faye and Elena were in the front and were immediately bombarded by one of the Frat members with ashy blonde hair, holding a plastic machete and a tray of drinks.
"Hey. I'm Frankie, unassuming serial killer." He introduced himself with what he thought was a charming smile.
Faye grinned at him and took one of the drinks that were being offered to the group of four, "Faye. The stupid hot girl who got herself killed at a party exactly like this."
"I'm Jack." Damon stepped forward next, "And these two lovely ladies I just....Rippered." His eyes darted over to Bonnie and Elena who had their own drinks now.
"Welcome to the Murder House, Bloody Marys are free until midnight. Enjoy yourselves."
Frankie left with a small nod of his head, going off to greet more of the new guest at the party. Faye and the three behind her began looking around at the scene, taking it all in. Many clattered on what seemed to be the dance floor, grinding in ways Faye knew were not meant for public. Some hung around on the staircases up to the rooms she knew were already becoming filled with couples that she was trying her best to block out. She hoped maybe she would become one of them that night, but that didn't mean she wanted to hear them.
"Well hats off to these idiots." Damon said, tipping his hat. His eyes wandered towards the staircase where he spotted the Professor who's class they had attended earlier, "Oh look, Professor Creepy."
Bonnie eye's nearly rolled back into her head at Damon's words, annoyed by him, "His name is Professor Shane. And he's not creepy." She made eye contact with him and handed her drink off to Elena, "I'm gonna go talk to him."
"You do that." Faye muttered, not really paying attention. She was focused on looking around the large room they were in, trying to find the boy who had invited her to this party. She found him standing in the corner with the guy she presumed was his friend dressed in normal clothes covered in blood with a cheesy headband on connected to a fake blood butcher knife made to look it had been stuck in his head. She smirked widely and looked towards Elena and Damon, "Target located. Don't wait to leave without me."
She didn't even give them a chance to reply before making a beeline towards Hayden. Faye took a sip of her drink to take the edge off, but ended up bulking at the taste. She turned and shoved it into the nearest persons hands, not wanting it any longer, and continued back on her way.
Hayden looked up immediately when she walked up, the dopey grin that she remembered from earlier appearing back on his face. Well that was until he saw her costume, "That looks terrifyingly real."
"I try my best." The strawberry blonde said without any modesty.
Hayden scoffed softly before his smile returned, "Even with you're scary real costume, I'm glad you came around."
"I'm trying to get the college feel. Gotta make sure some of these parties are good if I'm going to even think about attending here." Faye said with a shrug, "The drinks have already failed me."
"We're broke ass college students, what kind of liquor did you expect?" Hayden replied with a raised brow.
"Something I could actually tolerate."
Hayden had an idea and held out his arm to her for her to take, "Maybe I can help you find something that won't make you puke."
"Might be hard, but okay." Faye took his arm and he led her off towards where a small bar had been set up, beginning their long night together.
__
His lips were rough against hers as she straddled him, putting all ferociousness into the kiss. Faye and Hayden had spent most of the evening together, dancing and chatting about their lives. They got along great, better than anyone she had ever met, and maybe in some different universe, they could have been together. Now though, he was meant to be used to get over Tyler.
It didn't feel right; their bodies pressed together on his bed in the frat house. Faye didn't understand why though. He was amazing, the total package. He was hilarious, sarcastic, understood her completely and would probably be willingly to do anything for her if she asked. Hayden was the guy she needed for the safe, normal life she desired, but at the moment, he wasn't what she wanted (and what she wanted still wasn't very clear to her, she just knew what wasn't her type).
Guilt rushed through her along with the feeling of uncomfort. She didn't like using a nice guy like Hayden for something so selfish. He deserved better. He deserved to be treated right by a girl who loved him and would make him happy for the rest of his life, not just in one night where the next morning the two would disappear and never see each other again. He didn't deserve her.
Faye pulled back from him suddenly, shutting her eyes and letting out a long sigh at her decision to give up on the rebound. It wasn't right and she knew that it wouldn't work. Sleeping with another man she had no feelings for except for platonic ones wouldn't help her heal from Tyler's treacherous actions.
"What?" Hayden asked her after she pulled away, "What's wrong?"
"I- I-...." She stuttered, climbing off of him and the bed. She settled her feet down against the hardwood floor before moving around to collect some of her things, "I can't do this."
"A few seconds ago you were totally into it. What happened?" He continued on, his brows furrowed together.
"Look, Hayden." Faye began. She didn't know quiet how to break it to him. She could just compel him that none of this ever happened, but she couldn't do that to him, "You're amazing and all..."
"Oh god, those words never lead to anything good."
"I just broke up with my cheater ass boyfriend." She revealed to him, "And I was going to use you as a rebound because I just want to heal as quickly as possible because I have so many more problems to deal with then crying over this prick. But then I realized that I couldn't do that to you because you are literally one of the nicest guys I've ever met and you don't deserved to be a one-night stand."
Hayden listened to her rambling, nodding along to everything she said, getting it. When she stopped, he finally sat up from the position Faye had pushed him into when they had first made their way no his room, "You were going to use me?!" He started out with a joke, placing his hand over his heart with an expression of horror, "I feel so dirty now."
"I'm sorry." Faye said, looking down in shame.
"Don't worry, I'm not mad at all." Hayden said as he got up and walked towards her, "If we're going to be honest here, I was also kind of using you too. There's this girl in my History of American Literature class that I've been into forever and I was trying to make her jealous with you. It was bound to work because you are very attractive." He waved her hand around at her body awkwardly, but as she found everything he did, the hybrid found it adorable, "Now that I know we were using each other, I don't feel as guilty either."
"Oh, thank god!" Faye nearly shouted in relief, "This turned out a lot better than I expected."
"I'm easy like that." Hayden replied, "And if things didn't end on a good note, it would be really awkward when you came here after graduation. We wouldn't be able to grab a coffee every so often."
"What a shame that would be."
The two laughed together, their smiles both bright. Faye looked up at him with the corner of her lip turned up after they chuckles died down, "Friends?"
"Yeah." The tall lanky boy answered her.
"I should probably get going." Faye said right after, clutching her things to her chest, "It's late and my aunt's kind of a psychopath when I come up missing for more than twelve hours."
Hayden clicked his tongue, "Ooo, my dad was like that." He told her, "Do you have a ride home? You can always tell your aunt you're staying here for the night and in the morning I could get my friend, who has a car unlike me, to drive you home."
"I'll be fine." Faye didn't have a ride, but she didn't want him to go out of his way like that after she was prepared to screw him and then leave, "Thanks for the offer though."
"Anything for my new bestie." He raised his arms to her, "Hug goodbye?"
Faye giggled and hugged the boy the best she could with her hands full. She waved good bye before leaving the room and making her way downstairs back to where the party was still going on. Bonnie, Damon and Elena's scents were faint, meaning they weren't there, but they still had left an impression. She wasn't made about it, having told them to leave her because her night had been planned around sleeping with Hayden.
The strawberry blonde pushed her way out of the house and made her way out onto the curb. She stopped and dug through her purse that she had brought for her phone. She needed to call someone to pick her up because she was not running home in heels and with the possibilty of being caught by many drunk young adults.
Faye pressed the first name on her contact list without even caring who it was. She placed the phone t her ear and let it ring. It was answered by the second tone, the person on the other line greeting her with a nickname.
"Hey. Can you come pick me up?"
__
The black Ford Explorer pulled up thirty minutes after she had called, stopping a little bit down the street from her. Faye gotten into it with ease, not even hesitating to be inside due to the chill in the air. Being part vampire which is immune to the cold or heat didn't even matter when she still desperately missed her fur coat that kept her warm during her days as a wolf.
"Thanks for coming." Faye muttered to Klaus when she plopped down in the passenger seat, putting on her seat belt. He looked over at her, a confused expression on his face.
"Out of everyone you could have called, you called me. Why, love?" Klaus asked her.
"You're the first person in my contacts."
"That doesn't make any sense." He responded, seeing as his name started with a K.
"You're in as Asshole."
A wide smile spread across his lips and he let out a laugh. Faye found her self smiling at him, watching as he turned his head back towards the road instead of her. An odd thought ran through her mind as she looked at him.
Tyler didn't matter anymore when she was around the Original hybrid, just him. This was where she belonged it felt like. It felt right being in the car next to him, smiling, despite how much she wanted to admit it. She immediately tried to forget it, knowing Klaus and her weren't right. They weren't meant for each other, despite what Klaus had said around the time they first meet. They would be great together; they could rule the world.
"You owe me one, love." Klaus said to her while they were on the road, "I was about to leave for Italy until you called me."
"How bout' I change your contact name from Asshole to something a bit nice and we call it even?"
There was that laugh again, the one that Faye suddenly found contagious. It made the thoughts that she wanted to suppress return. No. It couldn't happen. It wasn't what she wanted.
But the flutter of her heart said otherwise.
