FORTY ONE ▶ DO YOU HEAR MY CRY?

"What do you mean you're ditching the clean up committee?" Faye asked Tyler as she walked down the hall of the high school. She was sure she was one of the only people there, not hearing anything else but her footsteps and a rustle of what seemed like a trash bag.

Faye hadn't made the choice to get out of bed herself, but was coaxed out by Caroline who needed a replacement for her spot on the clean up committee. Being the good friend she was, she said yes and went. It was better to focus on something then wallow in bed and sob over the loss of the resident vampire hunter. A plus was that she was going to see her boyfriend, but that didn't seem like it was going to happen.

"Klaus called."  Tyler told her, his voice seeping through the speaker of her phone, "He's leaving town and wants me to pack up his house."

The strawberry blonde scoffed, "Since when does sire bond equal mover slave?"

"Since he realized you're not gonna dump me for him." He replied causing Faye to huff.

"He's being an asshole."

"And he still thinks I'm sired to him." Tyler added, only making Faye pout more, "It's fine, I'll keep up the act and it will all be over soon." The was a small pause before he continued, "I'm late, I gotta go. I love you."

"I love you too." Faye responded. He hung up and she pulled her phone away from her ear. She was prepared to continue her journey into the cafeteria, but a loud bang against the locker's shocked her.

Her head whipped towards the direction the noise came from, a frown smeared on her face. She cocked her head slightly in confusion as she stared down the hall. A rush of wind hit her suddenly, causing her to turn her head back around.

"Hello?" Faye called out. There was no response, so she made the decision to ignore it and made her way into the cafeteria.

Rebekah was the only person in the cafeteria, gathering discarded cups and tossing them into the recycling bin that she carried. The hybrid who stood near her looked around, wondering where everyone was.

"Isn't Matt supposed to be here?"

"He bailed." Rebekah informed her, "Got called into work at the last minute."

"Are you kidding me?" Faye said, walking over to Rebekah, "So it's just us?"

Rebekah turned towards her and nodded, "Yes, and you're late." A bitter expression appeared on her face, "Clean up committee started at eight o'clock."

Faye checked her phone to see how late she was, but she was only late by two minutes, "It's 8:02."

"Exactly." Rebekah said, pushing past the hybrid to get to the trashcan, "I managed to turn up on time and I didn't even get to attend the dance that I organized." She began emptying out the smaller can of trash she had collected into the larger one.

Faye looked down at her toes, understanding Rebekah's hostility. She was used by her mother, who then ended up dead. The hybrid wanted to ease the tension in the room and make their time together at least a bit more bearable so she did the only thing she thought of.

"I'm sorry." She said, gaining the blonde Original's intention, "About your mom. I know she was a bitch and all, but no one should lose their parent."

Rebekah's hard expression that she had on the whole time since she had arrived softened, "I'm sorry about your teacher." She gave her condolences to Faye, "He seemed like a nice guy."

A shy smile appeared on Faye's face as she looked towards Rebekah, "Yeah, he was."

Rebekah returned it. She put down the can she had and sighed, "I'm gonna get started on the gym." The vampire told her before turning on her heel and leaving.

After Rebekah had left, Faye went to begin cleaning up. She barely had anytime to grab one piece of garbage before she heard a loud commotion outside in the hall. Her senses heightened and she noticed the struggle going on.

Faye rushed outside into the hall, seeing Alaric pinning Rebekah against the lockers, ready to stab the invincible white oak stake through her heart. The hybrid didn't take anytime to be surprised by the survival of the history teacher and sped forward. She threw him against the lockers, holding him down. Rebekah grabbed the white oak stake that had been dropped and with the help of Faye, drove it through Alaric's heart.

To the two girls surprise, he wasn't killed. Instead, he looked down at the stake now coated in his own blood with a groan. Faye and Rebekah backed away as he tore it out of his body. While he was distracted they both darted in different directions, saving themselves.

Faye made it to her car quickly. She immediately pulled out her keys, struggling to find the one to unlock her car. Her hands were shaking due to the fear rising in her. Alaric was alive and he seemed invincible, so there was no possibility she could kill him to get away if she needed to.

She finally got a hold of her key and she let out a sigh of relief. Faye looked up ready to unlock her car, but her eyes met Alaric's reflection in the window. Her eyes widened when he wrapped his hands around her chin and neck.

The last thing she felt was the pain of her spinal cord being snapped before she fell to the ground, out cold.

__

She couldn't breathe.

It was the first thing Faye noticed when she came to, sitting at a desk in her history classroom. Every breath she took felt like razors running down her throat, leaving wounds that would heal, only to be reopened once again. She realized it was due to the gag that had been placed on her. She was able to taste the vervain with her tongue, it sizzling as soon as it met the cloth.

She attempted to move her hands to yank it off, only to cause herself more pain. Faye's eyes darted down to where her pale hands were nailed to the table by wooden pencils, keeping her in place. It wasn't long before she realized that the person who did this to her was right in the room.

Alaric Saltzman, not dead and presumably the Original vampire hunter Esther had turned him into, sat at his desk, his feet kick up on top of the wooden surface. His phone was pressed to his ear as he waited for the other line to pick up. The hand not occupied by his phone twirled the thing Faye was terrified of; the white oak stake.

The man sent her a sinister smirked that made her want to coil back when the phone was answered.

"Whoever this is, it's not funny." Faye heard a voice that was recognizably Elena's say.

"Well, who else would it be?" Alaric responded. She could hear the gasp escape the doppelganger's lips.

"Ric?"

"Listen closely." He began, getting straight to the point, "I'm at the school, I have Faye, and if you want to keep her alive, I need you to get in your car and come down here right away." He kept his eyes trained on the strawberry blonde who was in pain, "If you tell anyone where you are going, I will kill her."

Faye stiffened at the mention of her death. She felt tears slowly form in her eyes at the thought of it. Alaric could possibly kill her if Elena didn't think Faye was worth it to save. She wouldn't even have a chance of survival, due to the fact the she could feel herself weakened by the vervain and wouldn't be a match to Alaric's Original vampire strength.

She squeezed her eyes shut, letting her tears fall. Alaric took note of it and grinned even wider.

"Don't worry." He told Faye in a fake sympathetic tone, "I'll make sure it's painful."

She prayed to whatever god was up there that Elena came and saved her life.

__

Time passed and the pain Faye was going through had only gotten worse. She wasn't healing at all because of the vervain and the herb seeped into the wounds it had created when it first came in contact with her skin. With the addition of multiple pencils being implied into her hands, it caused her to cry out in agony.

Alaric kept his eyes on her the whole time until footsteps began to echo throughout the hall. He grinned and looked towards the door, "Right on time." He said.

It wasn't long before Elena ran into the classroom, her eyes immediately going towards Faye. She froze up, worry pulsating through her as she stared at the strawberry blonde.

"Faye." Her name slipped past the doppelganger's lips. Elena turned towards Alaric with her eyes full of fury, "Let her go, Alaric!"

"Free her yourself." Alaric responded, waving his hands towards her.

The two stared each other down before Elena began to cautiously make her way towards Faye. She crouched down next to her and ran her hand comfortingly along the hybrid's arm. Faye watched Elena as she moved to gently pull out the pencil's in her hand. She shut her eyes tight, attempting to ignore the pain.

It wasn't possible to do so when Alaric sped forward and slammed the pencil back down into her hand. Faye let out a scream, tears filling her eyes to the brim.

"You said that you would let her go!" Elena yelled, standing up abruptly.

"How many times do I have to tell you, Elena?" The newly turned Original growled at her, "Stop trusting vampires!"

Elena stared at him with wide eyes. Faye knew it was in disbelief that Alaric was acting like this, but it wasn't him at all. The actual Alaric would have never done this to her. This was Esther's creation.

Alaric forced Elena to sit down at the desk next to the hybrid while he walked towards the one he would usually occupy. He grabbed his phone, both of the girls eyes on him, waiting to see what he was up to.

He dialed a number and pressed his phone to his ear. When the other line answered, he gave them no time to speak before saying exactly what he wanted. Klaus had to hand himself over if there was any chance of Elena and Faye to survive at his hands. Alaric hung up without letting the other person reply and tossed his phone on his desk.

The two girls sitting down followed him with his gaze as he walked towards them. He moved in front of Faye and reached to the back of her head to grab the knot he had created to keep the cloth around her mouth in place. Alaric untied it and removed it from her mouth, revealing the irritated skin around it.

The second it was gone Faye took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air that wasn't toxic to her. She panted, turning her head to look towards the man who was torturing her. He was dipping the cloth back into the beaker filled with vervain tainted water. She knew her fresh air wouldn't last for long.

"No." Faye groaned out when he walked towards her, "No more, please, no more!"

Elena jumped up from her seat, "Alaric, stop!" She yelled at him.

"Sit down!" Alaric pushed Elena back down into her seat. He positioned himself so he could wrap the cloth back around her mouth, "This keeps the vervain in her system. It's like inhaling razorblades with every breath."

The second the cloth came in contact with Faye's skin, it sizzled and smoked. She let out piercing cry, her hands attempting to curl up only to be stopped by the pencils lodged in her. She felt Elena's gentle touch on her arm.

"Why are you doing this?" Elena questioned.

"To make it easier on you when you put her out of her misery." Alaric made a move to grab the white oak stake on his desk.

"What?!" Elena's eyes filled with horror, "No!"

"Isn't this what you wanted, Elena? For me to teach you how to kill a vampire?" Alaric held the stake out for her to take, "Well here's a hybrid, Elena. Kill her."

The Gilbert girl shook her head, "This isn't what I want."

"Of course it is." He replied, still holding the stake out to her persistently, "All those hours you spent training, getting stronger, you could be a hunter, Elena. But you've never actually staked a vampire through the heart."

Elena stared at the stake for a few moments before her eyes darted over to Faye. The hybrid had terror running through her bones because she was sure today was the last day she would ever be alive.

__

"Why are you doing this?" Elena once again asked Alaric who was now pacing in front of the desk her and Faye sat in. She had refused the stake, which Faye was thankful for.

"Because you need me." Alaric answered, "Because you're an eighteen-year-old girl without parents or guidance or any sense of right and wrong anymore."

"Look at you." Elena gestured over to Faye who hadn't moved at all since she had arrived, "How is this right?!"

Alaric grew furious with and pointed towards the hybrid he had captured with the stake, "She's a murderer." Faye clenched her eyes shut, knowing exactly what he was going to say. She heard it on repeat with every hallucination she had after she killed on the road with Klaus, "She tore apart people all across the east coast the whole summer and not to mention she killed her parents! Now how is that right?"

"Listen, Elena, your parents led the council." He began, "It was their life's mission to keep this town safe. They weren't dead six months before you undid it all."

"You don't know anything about them." Elena spat right back at him.

"Why, am I wrong? Do you actually think that they'd be proud of you?" Alaric crouched down in front of the desk she sat at, "If you don't side with the humans, you're just as bad as them." His eyes wandered over to Faye for a moment before looking back at Elena, "Now kill her." He stood up and held the stake out to her, "Or I'll do it for you and I'll make it hurt." Elena refused to move so he yelled out, "Get up!"

Alaric grabbed her by the arm and dragged her to stand in front of Faye. He forced the stake into Elena's hand.

"She's a hybrid, this won't kill her." Elena said to Alaric.

"White oak will kill any vampire or hybrid." Alaric replied, "Esther made sure of it."

The doppelganger stood there with her arm raised, staring down at Faye with a pitiful look in her eyes. For a moment, Faye was sure she was going to drive that thing through her heart.

Elena didn't though. Instead, she turned around and tried to stab Alaric. He caught her wrist, his lip curling up into a snarl.

"I thought I taught you better than that."

"You did." Elena replied before grabbing the beaker of vervain and smashing it over his head. His skin began to sizzle and smoke as Faye's did and he yelled out.

While he was distracted the brunette ran over to where the strawberry blonde sat. She quickly tore out both of the pencils and unwrapped the cloth around Faye's mouth. The hybrid jumped to her feet, prepared to run.

"Get help!" Elena instructed.

Faye nodded before running out the door, not wanting to be grabbed by Alaric once again. She sped down the hall and turned around to make sure Elena was right behind her. The doppelganger wasn't, causing her to worry. She was in the hands of Alaric, who for sure would definitely kill her for pulling a stunt like she had.

She knew she had to go back and help her. Faye was prepared to run right back to her, but she was stopped by an arm wrapping around her waist. Her mouth opened to let out a scream, only to have a hand clamped down over it.

"Shhh. It's okay, it's okay.." A voice she recognized and has not been ever happier to hear it until now whispered, "It's me."

Faye turned around to look at Klaus, her lips parted in a slight gasp. It shocked her that he had actually came to turn himself in to save her and Elena's lives. It wasn't in Klaus' character to do so from what she had seen.

Klaus moved to run his thumb across the scars on her face that hadn't even begun healing. He brushed her hair behind her ear before he began speaking again.

"It's okay, you're safe."  The older hybrid assured her, "We'll save Elena. You go straight home. You stay inside, do you understand?" When she didn't respond, he repeated his words, "Do you understand?"

Faye nodded, completely understanding. To Klaus' surprise, she threw her arms around him and squeezed him tight. She was thankful he had come for whatever reason to get her out of the hell Alaric had put her in, even if it was not for her exactly. Klaus didn't return the hug at all before she pulled away and looked at him with admiration etched across her face.

"Thank you." She whispered to him.

Their eyes poured into each other for a moment and for one of the second times in her life she didn't see Klaus as the villain. This time he was the savior, the one who came for her and it wasn't to end her life, it was to save it.

The moment was ended by Klaus speeding away from her. Faye stood in the hall for one moment before she sped away herself, wanting to get home to Lacey as soon as possible.

__

"Are you okay now?" Lacey questioned her niece who sat on the couch, finishing the second cup of blood she had ever since she arrived home.

Any sign that Faye had been tortured was gone. She had been cleaned up by Lacey the minute she got home and changed. The wounds she had gotten had healed and disappeared from her pale skin the minute some B positive ran down her scared throat.

Faye pulled the mug away from her lips and she nodded, "Yeah, I'm fine. It's not the first time I've been through this."

Elijah walked up behind them and wrapped a blanket around Faye's shoulders, "Hopefully it shall be the last time." He said before pressing a kiss to the top of her head. The hybrid smile slightly in response.

"You should get some sleep." Lacey told her, standing up from her spot. She stroked Faye's hair, "You've had a long day."

"Alrighty." Faye responded, handing Lacey her empty mug. She stretched out on the couch and covered herself up with the blanket Elijah had given her, "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, sweetheart." Elijah replied before leaving the living room with Lacey.

Faye sighed deeply before shutting her eyes in attempts to get some much needed rest. Though, it was interrupted by a knock sounding on the front door. She let out a groan and got up to answer it, yelling to her aunt and godfather that she would get it. Her bare feet padded against the hardwood floor before she reached to open the door. The minute she did, she was tackled in a hug.

"Oh my god, Faye, I am so sorry!" Caroline apologized, squeezing the girl tight, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Care. It was nothing i couldn't handle." Faye said, pulling back from the hug.

"Good." The blonde responded, "I need you at your best because we need to celebrate."

Faye frowned, "Celebrate what?"

"Klaus is gone!" She said excitedly, "Not dead, but gone. They desiccated him like Mikael because he was going to kill Elena so Alaric would die, but that's not an option. Stefan and Damon are going to drop him off somewhere Alaric won't find him and kill him."

Faye didn't know why, but she felt her heartbreak slightly at the news of Klaus being immobilized. Caroline noticed the stiff stance the strawberry blonde took on and her eyebrows furrowed together in concern.

"Are you okay?" Caroline questioned, canting her head to the side a bit, "I thought you would be more ecstatic about the news. You wanted Klaus gone more than all of us."

"I am happy about it." Faye finally spoke again, going against what she felt, "I'm just a bit worn out from today. It's been a wild ride." The vampire's face dropped slightly, "But I am up for a little celebrating."

Caroline grinned, "Great."

__

Everyone was gathered around the Gilbert kitchen when Elena walked in. Faye stood next to Tyler who had his arm wrapped around her. Matt, Bonnie, Caroline and Jeremy were all laughing together about old times which made Faye smile.

"What are you guys doing here?" Elena questioned.

"Welcome to our victory party!" Caroline shouted out in joy.

Elena glanced at her confusedly, "What victory? We failed. Alaric's still out there."

Bonnie smiled sheepishly at her best friend, "We know, but we've been trying to get rid of Klaus forever and Caroline convinced us to enjoy it for a night."

"You know, to be honest, I'm a little pissed none of you let me help you take down Original brother number two." Matt interjected, throwing his around Tyler with a wide smile on his face.

"Yeah, he would have taken you right down to the hospital, bro." Tyler responded.

Matt scoffed loudly, "Please, I'm more stealth than that. I'm like a ninja."

"You wish, Donovan." Faye told him, earning the stink eye from the said teen.

Caroline brought a shot over to Elena, which she needed especially after what happened with the Salvatores outside. Tyler walked over to them next and smiled at Elena.

"Hey, give me your hand." He said, taking it to pour salt on it.

"Thank you for standing up to Klaus like that." Elena praised the Lockwood wolf.

"Let's just say it's been a long time coming."

"Way too long." Faye added, walking over. She glanced over towards Elena, "Speaking of standing up to people; thank you Elena. I probably owe you my life."

"You don't owe me anything." The doppelganger responded, "You're my friend."

The hybrid beamed at her before wrapping her arms around the taller girl. She pulled away and walked back over to where everyone was gathered and grabbed her shot that the blonde vampire poured.

"All right, let's drink!" Caroline yelled out.

"I do not condone this, by the way." Elena added.

"You survived Klaus." Jeremy told his sister, "All right, make an exception, you can go back to being responsible tomorrow."

Elena nodded and everyone began raising their shot glasses to their lips. Suddenly, Tyler stopped them.

"Hang on. Do you hear that?" He said causing everyone around him, including Faye to frown, "That is the sound of a Klaus-free life."

The group erupted into laughter. Elena grinned widely before raising her shot glass high.

"To a Klaus free life." She spoke, giving the toast. Everyone else raised their glasses, "And to all of you. My family."

They all clinked their glasses together, calling out 'cheers' before knocking back the drink. As the bitter liquor ran down Faye's throat, she couldn't help but feel like this was all wrong.
