FIFTY FOUR ▶ A LITTLE DEATH
"Hey, idiot."
Damon looked up from his spot on the cot to the small barred window of the door. A small smile appeared on his face at the appearance of Faye with her cheeks pressed against the cool bars, a grin on her face. Both hands were wrapped around the bars, one clutching an open envelope tightly. She was happy to see him awake, and it was a nice thing to know after a night of feeling like death for Damon.
"Amnesia." He nodded towards, "What do I owe the pleasure?"
"Well, for one, I have breakfast." Faye's pale features were removed the opening as she bent down to grab a vial from the stool outside of the door. She grabbed it and held it up for him to see.
He groaned in relief, slowly pulling himself up off the cot. Damon trudged over to the door and grabbed a hold of the vial. Within seconds, he had drained what had been in the small glass bottle, dropping it on the ground when he finished.
"Think Stefan will let you give me more than this tiny ass bottle?" The elder Salvatore questioned the strawberry blonde, not satisfied with his small meal. Faye understood how he felt. Her own desire for blood was stronger than the normal vampire and she wouldn't even be slightly happy with the amount of blood he had been given.
"Sorry." She apologized to him, "If I give you anymore, you break free and kill Jeremy. We don't want that, do we?"
Damon huffed, "Right."
"Don't worry, it won't be long until we get things under control and you'll be able to drink all the blood bags you want again." Faye gave him a tight lipped smile, trying to bring up his mood, "I think Stefan's got a plan, but I don't know."
"My hero-haired brother, at it again." The vampire scoffed, "Where even is he this fine morning?"
"It's actually kind of gloomy outside." Her sarcasm received an eyeroll, "He left last night. Told me to watch over you so you don't go and murder baby hunters. I think I'm doing a pretty great job so far."
"I'm miserable."
Faye smirked, "Well, he didn't say I had to keep you happy."
"Wait till' I get out of here."
The hybrid placed a hand on her chest in mock hurt, the one not gripping a hold of the envelop in her hand, "Damon, no." She told him, "If you kill me, that means I can't attend Whitmore next year."
She dragged out her wording, slowly pulling the envelope into view from behind the bar. Faye made sure the return address was in plain sight so Damon couldn't say she was lying. A smirk slowly grew on his face as he looked at.
"Never doubted you for a second, nerd." He slyly commented, "We need to celebrate pronto. Me; you; the designated driver Stefan will go out and paint the town red."
Faye smiled at the thought. She had been wanting to really celebrate with her boys and maybe tag-a-long Lacey ever since she got the letter, but with everything going on she couldn't, "When you're done wanting to murder a specific someone, I'll hold you to it."
"Oh come on!" Damon whined, moving back towards his cot. He sat down, throwing his head back in a groan, "I woke up feeling completely unmurderous, and I'm pretty sure that it's safe to set me free."
"Don't even think about it, Faye."
Faye turned her head to see Stefan walking up to where she was standing on the tips of her toes to look into the window of the cell. She nodded towards him, acknowledging his presence before she turned her gaze to look at the man walking up close behind him.
Klaus Mikaelson. She had been hoping not to see him after she had to go and persuade him to stop Kol from killing either Damon or Jeremy, but in reality what good had that done. Faye wouldn't have even gone to his home the day before if it hadn't been for that. Their eyes connected for a few moments before the female hybrid removed her gaze from him to Stefan.
"I wasn't thinking about it." Faye told the Salvatore, not even believing he would think she would. She stepped down from the door and stuffed the envelope in her back pocket as she looked at him, "He can get out when we deal with the whole compulsion situation."
"I said I don't feel murderous at all." Damon called out, but was ignored by the three in the hall.
Stefan made a move towards the cell door, jarring it open for them all to see the full room. Damon glanced over at his brother, watching him as he picked up the vial. The younger Salvatore looked over a Faye.
"You give him just one?"
The elder Salvatore answered for her, "Yes, she did and what the hell? You bled me dry. At least spring for a bag or something. I'm thirsty."
Instead of the blood bag he desired, Stefan grabbed a water bottle sitting on top of the stool outside the cell. He placed it on the ground in front of the door with pursed lips.
"Not exactly what I had in mind." Damon commented, looking at the bottle with a stink eye.
Faye rolled her eyes at the two of, their bitterness towards each other annoying to her. Another fight over Elena ever since Stefan discovered her and his brother slept together. It wasn't the main problem now, but it always seemed to come back to her.
"Okay, tell me you've got a plan." The strawberry blonde said, changing the subject, "To deal with this whole compulsion thing?"
"There's a plan." Stefan told her in full honesty.
"Does it involve him?" Faye nodded back towards where Klaus stood, watching and listening to her.
Klaus took a step forward towards her and gave her the smallest of his tight lipped smiles. In Damon's line of sight now, he saw Klaus and furrowed his brows together. He spoke before anyone could answer Faye's question, "What the hell are you doing here?"
"It seems Stefan has recruited me to help babysit." Klaus answered, making Faye frown.
"I thought I was on babysitting duty." She said to Stefan.
The vampire let out a sigh before telling her his reasoning, "You kind of have a soft spot when it comes to Damon. Klaus is just here in case you decided to let him out."
Faye felt offended by Stefan's comment. He had to know she was much smarter than that to let him out, but what he said made her think otherwise. She was quick to defend herself, "Okay, I have a soft spot for everyone in my pack, but I'm not going to let him out so he can murder people. I can handle him alone."
Stefan ignored her and spoke to Klaus instead, "Give him a vial of blood every couple of hours so he doesn't desiccate. If he gets too much strength back or if he just annoys you, bleed him out again." He instructed the Mikaelson.
"Silent treatment uh?" Damon piped up, making a snarky statement, "He's still pissed at me for sleeping with Elena" He told Klaus.
Klaus raised a brow, amused, "Are you sure about that? Because I caught him trying to sneak out of Rebekah's bed this morning, which would suggest to me that he's moved on."
"What?" Faye eyes shot towards Stefan as she exclaimed.
Damon's reaction was much different, taking the news with a smirk "Well, well. Looks like my brother ripped out a page of my revenge sex handbook."
Stefan scoffed at him, not even going to try and fight back with him. He looked between Klaus and Damon before speaking, "Well, why don't you two enjoy your little, uh, villain bonding time? I'll let you know when I get the dagger from Rebekah." He finished with his eyes on the blond male in the room and made his exit easily.
Faye didn't know what was going on, but she was upset. She felt as if Stefan didn't trust her anymore with keeping them safe. He had to bring in Klaus as back up to babysit her more than Damon. She stood there for a moment, wondering why in the hell he was acting this way and knew she needed to find out.
So, she followed him when he left the cellar, demanding answers to what was wrong with him. Faye grabbed his arm once she made it the the living room where he was on the phone. He pulled it from his ear, hanging up the minute she grabbed him.
"What the hell?" Faye questioned immediately, "Why did you bring Klaus here to watch over Damon when I'm perfectly capable of doing so myself? Especially when you know him and I are having some issues that makes me want to keep my distance?"
"Faye-"
"Is it because of our conversation last night when I said the cure wasn't worth it?" She asked, "Do you not trust me anymore?"
Faye was finally finished, allowing Stefan to respond to her accusations, "Faye, I trust you completely. I just wanna make sure everything goes smoothly with this plan, alright?"
"And the involves Klaus being here, watching over Damon with me?" The hybrid raised a brow.
"Yeah." He nodded, "It'll be fine and Damon will be uncompelled. All I have to do is get the dagger from Rebekah so we can put Kol down. Just handle your and Klaus' problems for a day and you can go back to avoiding the feelings you have for him."
"Low blow." She slapped his shoulder, "But, fine. I can do that as long as you promise me when things get handled, we're celebrating the fact I'm one of the next med students to step foot on Whitmore's Campus."
Stefan smiled at her and reached up to rub her arm comfortingly, "You got it. I'll see you later."
"Call me if you need me." Faye said before letting Stefan leave out the door to put his plan into motion. She took in a deep breath once she was gone, knowing this was going to be a long day.
__
Faye lounged outside of Damon's cell, flipping through one of the books that had been put there for Damon's entertainment. It had been an hour, possibly two, but she wasn't checking the time, since Stefan left. Between the three, there had been mostly silence except for when Damon would ask Faye something and they began to chat back and forth.
"You know, none of this would be an issue if you'd have just done your job properly." Klaus spoke up finally, talking directly to Damon, "I was perfectly willing to let you train Jeremy."
Damon scoffed, "No, you weren't." He said, "Are you kidding? You got there on day two. Do you know how hard it is to get these X-BOX brains to focus?"
Klaus gave him a pointed look before continuing, "And then when I turned a room full of barflies into vampires for him to slaughter, you let Kol kill them."
"Your brother problem, not mine, buddy."
Faye rolled her eyes at them both, deciding their bickering petty. She wasn't going to make any sort of comment even though Klaus was wrong. She didn't really want to talk to him if she didn't have to. Her eyes were kept trained on her book, ignoring the two.
The alarm on her phone dinged, telling her it was time to give Damon some more blood. She let out a sigh, tossing the book she was scanning to the side before standing up. Klaus and Damon both looked her way in wonder.
"Dinner time." Faye said shortly to them.
She walked down the hall away from the two to one of the other rooms containing the freezer full with blood bags. The hybrid got to work on filling up one of the empty vials full of blood, humming to herself as she made sure not to spill any of what was food to her.
Klaus was speaking to Damon again when she had finished, her enhanced hearing allowing her to listen to their conversation from down the hall. The conversation seemed to have become more intense the minute she was out of sight doing something else. It probably was meant to be quiet, but nothing was truly private in a world full of vampires.
"Come on." An accent clearly said, Klaus being the one speaking, "There must be a secret. It can't just be the sire bond. What is it? Compulsion? Manipulation? What is it you say to her?"
What could the two be possibly talking about? She hadn't caught must of the conversation, it must have been the middle of it.
She could hear the teasing grin Damon wore on his face as he responded, "I think this has something to do with a certain little hybrid. I think you murdered Carol Lockwood, and I think you're worried that Faye's never going to forgive you."
Faye finally realized what Klaus had to been asking about; something about how to make people forgive you easily. Specifically, how Elena, if she guess correctly, forgave Damon so easily. She stopped for a moment, wondering if Klaus would deny the fact that his questioning was about her.
He didn't deny it, but instead responded, "You've done worse."
"Debatable." Damon told him,"See, I don't mind being the bad guy, because somebody has to fill that role and get things done. Faye does it half the time with me. You do bad things for no reason. You do them to be a dick."
"Debatable."
"If you're gonna be bad, be bad with purpose. Otherwise you're just not worth forgiving." Damon finished off with his last piece of advice to Klaus, or so she thought. He started speaking up again after a quiet laugh, "I don't even know why you're worried. Faye'll probably forgive you cause she's too nice and most likely wants to screw you."
Faye let out a sigh, facepalming at Damon's words. He was an idiot who wasn't very deserving of the blood she had in her hand, but she had to give it to him anyways. Sooner than possible so he couldn't say anything else about what she may or not be feeling for Klaus.
But he was right though, she in the future was most likely going to forgive him. The screwing part? Well, that's debatable.
__
Keeping herself separated from Klaus was hard since she was supposed to be watching Damon too, but she found a way to make sure nothing was going. She was sitting on the couch with her phone in hand, waiting for a response from Stefan. Faye needed updates on the situation or she wouldn't go insane and feel the need to do something irrational. She was sure Stefan wasn't in danger, but a part of her still worried.
The glass of whiskey she had in her hand was brought to her lips, taking a sip to calm her nerves. She needed a word back from Stefan or she was going to explode.
"I'm sensing you too are infuriated by Stefan's lack of communication."
Faye huffed and glanced over at the man who had just walked into the parlour room with a raised brow, "Aren't you supposed to be watching over Damon?" She asked Klaus who stood in the front of the room.
"Aren't you?" He countered easily, "The cell door's closed and I doubt the Salvatore is strong enough to free himself."
Faye shrugged, deciding that he was right and that one of them watching constantly wasn't neccesary. Besides, their heightened senses would help if Damon ever decided to make any type of move.
She knocked back the rest of her alcohol, wincing at the taste of it. It seemed she was drinking more and more of the one thing she didn't like very much ever since the stress of Mystic falls was hitting another peak.
She just couldn't wait until she could finally head of to college, somewhere she could allow herself to focus on school and what she loves. By then, she was sure everything with the supernatural would be calm and she could live her immortal life as free as she wants.
Faye stood up from her seat and moved towards the table covered in bottles of alcohol and glasses. She grabbed another glass for Klaus, deciding it was rude not to offer one to him. She poured a glass of whiskey before holding it out to him.
"Thank you." He said, taking it and taking a sip of his own. The Daniels girl poured more in her glass before doing the same, "I heard you got into Whitmore."
"Yeah, I did." Faye told him with pursed lips, "Didn't have anything to do with it, did you?"
"If I wanted to compel you into school, I would've compelled your acceptance to the best school in the country, love." Klaus smirked at her. She rolled her eyes in response, "But, congratulations are in order. I know you've been looking forward to it for a long time."
"Thanks." She gave him a small tight lipped smile.
The conversation felt awkward. Before the mess at the Winter Wonderland Fundraiser, small talk between them was common, full of laughter and smiles. Now, it just felt dry and stiff. She missed that, those times where they would sit and chat having been one of the best times she had ever spent with him. A part wished they could go back to normal, but they couldn't unless she forgave him anytime soon.
But she couldn't just go ahead and forgive him just like that. He would go a head and think he can do it all over again if she did. Faye had to do something else.
"Look, Klaus." Faye began, drawing the Original Hybrid's attention once again from the ground he stared at awkwardly, "You really shouldn't ask for Damon's advice when it comes to getting my forgiveness. You guys are in two different types of boats."
"You heard?"
"I did." She answered, watching as he grew slightly embarrassed, but tried to conceal it, "If you really want my forgiveness, prove you deserve it. Prove your not entirely evil and then maybe I'll think about it."
"That's what it would take." Klaus noted, watching her carefully.
Faye nodded and took another sip from her whiskey, "Might be a little hard for you."
Klaus released a small chuckle and she smiled at him. There was a chance for them, whether it just be for friendship or something else. They had a chance to go back to how they were before it all turned into misery for the hybrids. There was hope.
But the hope died the minute Kol Mikaelson called his brother ranting about how Elena and Jeremy Gilbert were attempting to kill him. Faye had been just as shocked as Klaus when he had heard, no one telling her anything about it. The minute Klaus hung up the phone, he grabbed a hold of her arm in a steel type grip full of anger.
"What the hell is going on?" Klaus snarled at her.
"I don't know." She answered honestly, but he didn't believe her.
"What are Stefan and Elena planning?" He yelled.
"I don't know!" Faye shouted right back at him. She yanked her arm from his grip, "You know how much they like to leave me out of the loop when they want to kill off a member of the Original family! I thought we were getting the dagger and putting him down, not killing him completely. I don't want Kol dead."
Klaus stared at her for a long moment, not knowing whether to trust her or not. Eventually, he decided he didn't have time to debate over it, but instead raced out the door to go save his brother.
Faye was left behind shocked, not knowing what the hell was going on as it always seemed.
__
Kol Mikaelson was dead. Faye didn't even have to leave the Salvatore boarding house to know that. The minute Damon called her down saying he truly felt no desire at all to kill Jeremy Gilbert, she knew he was gone. Her aunt lost a friend. Her god-father had lost another brother. Klaus lost another family member.
It wasn't right. Elena and Jeremy had explained their plan after the deed had been said and done and they arrived at the boarding house afterwards. They killed him so Jeremy could complete his mark and get rid of Damon's compulsion. It wasn't a bad plan, but that didn't mean it was morally right.
Kol didn't deserve death. He was an asshole, sure, but he didn't deserve to die. No one did.
How did she know this look for the cure would result in death? This was most likely the first of many who would die because a few vampires in Mystic Falls wanted to be human. She bit the nail of her thumb, letting out a soft sigh in worry.
"Didn't work." Jeremy said, keeping watch of his hunter's mark that was at the small spot it had been for the last few days. He was pacing in front of Faye, Elena and Bonnie, waiting for something to happen. They all were, especially Faye. She didn't want Kol's death to be a waste if anything.
"It took time for Finn's line to die off." Bonnie tried to calm him, "Remember? It'll work."
"What if it doesn't?"
"Where's that Gilbert optimism?" Damon's voice sounded throughout the room, drawing the attention of Elena. She jumped and ran for him within seconds, "Sorry I missed all the excitement." He told her before the embraced.
The ex-doppelganger pulled away and smiled, "I'm just happy to see you."
"So I guess I didn't miss much."
Stefan walked in right after he finished speaking, something large in his arms. Elena and Damon turned his way, along with Faye in curiousity of what it was.
"Got the Silas's headstone." He informed them.
Elena nodded at him, "We're just waiting for Jeremy's mark to grow. Klaus is trapped in our living room."
"You trapped him?'' Faye finally spoke up, jumping from her seat, "In the house with his brother's body?"
"We didn't have much of a choice. He was threatening to kill us." Bonnie defended the choices they made. Faye didn't feel any better about what they did despite it. She muttered a whatever before Bonnie continued talking, "And it's only temporarily. I drew the new moon to bind the spell. Got three days to find that cure, four max."
Jeremy sighed, "If we don't, we might as well look up Katherine Pierce and see if she wants some company in hiding 'cuz he will come after us."
"We'll find it." Elena stated clearly, "Now we've got Rebekah taken care of, all we need is Professor Shane, and we'll have everything we need."
A guilty look appeared on Stefan's face as he looked down at his feet, "Yeah, I didn't uh..." He stuttered out his confession, "I didn't dagger her."
"What? Why not?"
"I didn't need to, she's on our side."
"On our side? Did you just say that?" Elena scoffed at him.
"She wants the cure as much as you guys." Faye stepped in to say, "She obviously handed over the headstone to Stefan willingly."
The Gilbert glanced at her in disbelief before doing the same to Stefan, "Why would you possibly think that you could trust her?"
"Let me guess. She pledged her allegiance to you while you were naked in the sack."
Shock ran throughout the room after Damon spoke, mainly for the three who didn't know. Elena looked like she had been slapped in the face. Faye let out a sigh, knowing Damon just opened a can of shit.
Stefan glared at his brother, taking a step towards him, "I bet you're just dying to get that out, weren't you Damon?"
"Oh was this supposed to be secret?" Damon replied with sarcasm, "Maybe you should make that a little clearer while you're bleeding me dry in our cellar."
"Yeah. To keep you from killing Jeremy."
"Stop it. Both of you." Elena shouted at them, thinking she could do anything to break up the siblings.
"Now why don't you tell her to calm down, Damon?" Stefan suggested, "You've managed to use that sire bond pretty well so far, haven't you?"
Faye hadn't been expecting the older Salvatore to drive his fist into his younger brother's face, but she had a feeling something was going to happen. She rushed forward, pushing herself in between the two and forcing them away from each other.
"Hey, both of you-"
She couldn't even finish scolding them before she was interrupted by Jeremy. He released a loud painful scream, reaching up to tug away at his shirt. It ripped apart, revealing his chest with a now growing hunter's mark on it. Everyone turned to watch, in slight awe.
"It's happening." Jeremy told them.
"Oh my god." Elena said in shock at it.
"What? You can see it?"
Faye gulped, knowing there was no way to stop the cure hunt now, "Here we go."
