FIFTY FIVE ▶ NIGHT CHANGES

Faye took in a deep breath as she glanced up at the Gilbert house. She wasn't supposed to be there, especially not at five am on the day she was supposed to be at home preparing for a journey to find the cure. Damon had told her to stay away because he knew Klaus had an affect on her that no one else did, but at the same time he couldn't stop her.

She had to be there. A night full of tossing and turning in her bed, thinking about the man holded up in the home of his enemy and the only thing he could possibly do was stare at his dead brother. Faye couldn't stand the fact they had left him there alone in pieces and it was causing her to lose sleep. So, in the end, she got out of her bed, packed and overnight bag all because she was worried about a man who used to make her life hell.

Oh, how the times have changed. She used to hate him and now she's going out of her way to make sure he was okay. She was even supposed to still be upset with him and have him begging for her forgiveness! Faye was weak now; weak when it came to the idea of Klaus in tears and possibly needing a hug.

The strawberry blonde jogged up to the door, trying not to make a lot of noise as she looked in the soil of the plant by the door for Elena's spare key. Faye didn't really want the horrible police force of Mystic Falls to be called by a terrified neighbor.

She unlocked it quickly, but opened the door in a much different way. Her hand pushed it open slowly as she peaked inside the home to make sure no one who wasn't supposed to be there wasn't. Elena and Jeremy were shacked up at the boarding house for the night since they couldn't bear to be in the same home as Klaus, so they wouldn't be there. None of her other pack mates would dare even be alone with Klaus during the night unless there had been an issued babysitter and their first shift didn't start until the sun rose.

Faye peaked through the crack she slowly widened to see Klaus standing in the living room, staring off into the distance. It seemed he hadn't noticed she was there yet, but the minute she shut the door and made her way more into the house, he spoke up.

"Did they send you to torment me?" Klaus questioned, not even turning to face her. His eyes were still trained on something off into the kitchen, full of anger and sadness. Faye understood why when she finally looked to see what it was.

Kol's charred body still laid under the table in plain sight for him to see. She pursed her lips and gulped, knowing how hard it must be for him.

"No." Faye shook her head as she spoke, her eyes not leaving Kol's lifeless ones. She didn't even give the real reason why she was there because the sight causing her to be sick to her stomach.

She moved to drop her bag onto the couch in the other part of the living room that was off limits to him. The minute she was done with that, she moved over towards the kitchen where the body laid to do something about it. Klaus spoke to her as she searched through the cabinets for something to cover Kol up with.

"What are you doing?" Klaus asked her.

Faye found an extra sheet in a closet and took it out. She unfolded it before walking over towards Kol again with the sheet blowing, "Covering him up." She answered the question, "Showing him the respect my friends couldn't." It was seconds before she laid the sheet over him, no hesitation needed.

"And I didn't want you seeing him like this any longer." The Daniels began rambling, just wanting to get everything out before she had to think about it anymore. She was so angry and upset with her pack, her family, for doing what they had done. It wasn't right. None of it was right, "You don't deserve to see someone you loved treated like he was nothing. No one deserves it. Not even you will all the horrible things you've done and it shouldn't have happened."

"It happened though, love."

"Yeah, it happened and I'm sorry. About Kol and for rambling." She sounded breathless. She turned away from what created the stench of death in the room and wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, "Jesus, christ. I'm not even supposed to be here."

"Then why are you?"

"I was worried about you and I didn't want you to be alone."

It came out in a whisper, the confession sounding embarrassing for her. Faye didn't want to admit it, but it was honesty hour it seemed. She had already went on about her rage towards the atrocity that was the death of the youngest Mikaelson boy.

Klaus didn't know how to respond. Instead, he just stared at the girl. The one who had had him a mess since the moment they met. The one who showed up at five am with bed head just because she cared enough to even worry. There was a light in the dark house he stood trapped in and it was her.

Faye went back towards her bag and began digging different things out of it. She grabbed two things before walking over to Klaus, crossing over the line drawn to insure Klaus stayed inside the enclosement. She wasn't scared that he would retaliate for what her friends had done and kill her. Faye didn't need to be afraid of him anymore.

"I thought you might need these." She held up in one hand a blood bag and in the other, a bottle of whiskey, "You had a long night and I know from personal experience, these help."

Klaus took it from her and pursed his lips, "I don't really like to drink alone."

"I wasn't really planning on letting you."

With the bottle of whiskey, they found themselves drinking to forget what Mystic Falls had turned into when the cure arose from the depths.

The sun was shining through the curtains when the Gilbert's door slammed open and the shouts of Tyler Lockwood and Caroline Forbes woke Faye up from her power nap. She jumped up from her spot on on of the couches that she had been on when the need for sleep hit her after a whole other bottle of whiskey she packed in her bag. The hybrid let out a groan when they walked in arguing.

"Shut up."

"Then tell Tyler he's not supposed to be here!" Caroline told the strawberry blonde, gesturing towards the Lockwood, "Wait, you aren't even supposed to be here. Everyone was looking for you all morning! You were supposed to go to the island."

"Why look for a cure I'm not gonna use?"

Caroline sighed at her, "It's for Elena."

"Elena can suck it." Faye muttered. Before Caroline could even sound appalled by the statement, Faye looked towards Tyler and spoke, "You, leave. I don't remember seeing you on the babysitting list."

"He destroyed my life. I plan on being present for every second of his misery until I can kill him myself." Tyler glanced over towards the man standing and watching the scene play through. Faye rolled her eyes as he called out to him, "You look pitiful, sunshine."

"Only until Bonnie's spell locking me in here wears off." Klaus gained a sinister smirk on his face, "Then I'll look different. Angrier, perhaps. Or, I won't look like anything, because I'll have gouged your eyeballs from their sockets."

Tyler treated his threats as if they were nothing and took a step forward, making sure not to get too close to where Klaus was, "My friends will be back with the cure by then. So, I could shove it down your throat and make you mortal."

"I'm an original." Klaus elaborated, "What makes you think my entire vampire bloodline won't be cured along with me? In example, you."

"You know what I think?" The Lockwood hybrid grinned with a short chuckle passing through his teeth, "I think that's impossible. I think the moment you stop being a vampire, our whole blood connection to you is broken, and your sire-line ceases to exist. So, whatever happens to you happens only to you, which means I can kill your ass and no one else has to die."

"Um, yeah, I don't think we're gonna try and test that out. You're not killing anyone." Faye butted in finally, sick of the argument going on between them.

Tyler looked towards her and scoffed, "Is your head still up his ass?"

"No and it never was." She crossed her arms over her chest as she stepped towards Tyler, "Even it had been, at least he's a lot more honest than you."

Annoyance passed his face when he heard her. He looked at her for a moment before finally he made a decision, "We need to talk. In private."

"Fine."

Faye didn't seem any harm in doing so. She started walking towards the door, knowing going outside would be the only possible place for them to talk in privacy. Tyler followed after her, shutting the front door behind them once they were out on the porch. The two walked out further before they decided they were away from the house enough for no one to be eavesdropping.

Tyler was the first one to say anything. He turned towards Faye and sighed, "Look, I know we have our problems and stuff, but I need you to let me have this. Let me kill him."

"No." Plain and simple. She wasn't going to let Tyler kill Klaus.

"Faye-"

"Don't even try to convince me to let you try." Faye shook her head at him in disbelief.

Tyler ran his hand through his hair and exhaled deeply, "Did you suddenly forget what he did to me? To you? To everyone in this town?"

"Of course I didn't forget it!" Faye threw her hands up in the air in disbelief that he had even asked, "I remember everything he did to us, okay? I saw him kill your mother Tyler and I gave him hell for it!"

"Then why are you protecting him?!"

"I'm not!" It was a flat out lie that came from her. The second half wasn't much of one, but it wasn't the full reason she sat there, going against what she had wanted at the start of it all, "I'm protecting you! Just like that night during the Winter Wonderland fundraiser, I'm worried about what's gonna happen to you. If you fail, you die. If you do it, then something bad could happen. I still care about you!"

The Lockwood shook his head at her, "Why do I feel like you're lying to me?"

"Tyler..."

He didn't even let her finish talking before he turned on his heel. As the boy she once loved walked away from her,  she knew that nothing she said fixed it and somehow, it would only make it worse.

__

"Start from the beginning."

The minute Faye had walked back inside the Gilbert home, her shoulders sagging in result of her talk with Tyler, Caroline had to know what had gone down despite the fact it had been private. She ignored Klaus and dragged Faye right back outside to discuss everything that had gone down between the two once lovers.

"He said he wanted to kill Klaus, I said no and then he got all bitchy because I was protecting the guy that we're supposed to hate. Then he called me a liar because I said I wasn't protecting Klaus, I was protecting him instead. Simple." Faye gave her the rundown of everything in few sentences. She sat on the curb of the street, her chin resting in her hands while Caroline stood above her, listening.

"So, you lied and he got mad."

"I didn't lie." Faye defended herself, with a small shrug, "I just removed part of the truth. I wanna protect Tyler even though he is a piece of shit, but I don't want Klaus to die too."

"You know, I remember when you were helping in trying to kill Klaus and bulking at the thought of him. Now, you care about him." Caroline was walking the other direction as she spoke, waving her hands around.

"I actually have feelings for him." The shorter girl mumbled, having not told Caroline about the revelation she about the said men.

Caroline whirled around towards her with a surprised look on her face, "What?! And you didn't tell me?! When did this happen? Who else knows? Does he know?"

"Um, Lacey and I figured it out at the Winter Wonderland fundraiser and Damon knows. Klaus knows too because I told when I was angry and lost all control of my filter." She admitted sheepishly to her blonde friend. Caroline squealed, "Shut up, Care!"

"I knew it!" The vampire boasted, "Even when he was the biggest asshole in the universe, I just had the feeling that there was something that was gonna happen between you two."

The Daniels hybrid shook her head, "Nothing has happened between us, though."

"But something could happen that's the point."

"What could happen?"

Faye and Caroline both turned to look up towards Lacey Daniels who had just arrived for her turn to watch over Klaus. She must have ran there, seeing as her car wasn't in sight. Faye's aunt glanced down at her niece and immediately shook her head.

"Nothing." She said quickly, trying to get Caroline off the subject that something was going to happen between her and Klaus. Faye hadn't even verbally forgiven Klaus the things he's done, so they couldn't get anywhere.

"Okay..." Lacey stared at her oddly, "Where did you run off to this morning at five am? I heard you tossing and turning all night then suddenly you're running out the door."

"Wait, you've been here since five in the morning?" Caroline questioned. The excitement that had bleeding through her seemed to have softened up. The hybrid slowly nodded, "I've called you at five in the morning and you wouldn't dare come over because you loved your sleep so much."

"I couldn't sleep. I was too worried about Klaus."

The look Lacey and Caroline shared made Faye worry. She got up from her seat on the curb and her eyes darted between the two.

"What? What's wrong?"

"Faye, remember when we talked about how to know when your in love? We had that long talk about it when you started dating Tyler?" Caroline asked her, "And I said that love is when you put someone's needs before your own?

"Yeah, I remember, why?" Faye was oblivious to what she was connecting there. The more Caroline stared and waited for her to realize, there it was, "Caroline, no. I'm not-"

"You're in love with Klaus." Lacey finished for her niece.

Faye shook her head, "I'm not. If that rule applied to everyone, then I'm in love with Damon too."

"But Damon's your pack." Her aunt pointed out, "You'll always put him first because of it. And do you know what Klaus is not?"

"He's not your pack."

Faye needed to sit down. She hit the curb again, her knees meeting her chest as she sat in thought. They couldn't be right. She knew she had feelings for Klaus; it was obvious. He made her heart flutter and feel like she was the only girl in the world. Him killing someone couldn't even make her turn away and run even if it had been one of the worse things he had done.

The feelings she had for Klaus couldn't even compare to the ones she had for Tyler. Tyler was supposed to be the love of her life and she was going to spend all eternity with him. Her love for him had flowered from the tiniest crush she had on him. He was her first everything, an amazing first until he cheated on her and became her first heartbreak.

And what she had for Klaus was different. Her love for Tyler burned like a candle flame, bright, innocent. When it burnt out, she could always get another. Whatever she had for Klaus was a fucking wildfire that destroyed her entire being and when it was over, there would be nothing left. It was more than what she had for Tyler and she was sure she had loved that Lockwood boy that had been her first.

"Oh my god." Faye realized, "I might love Klaus. What the hell am I going to do?"

__

The female hybrid found herself inside the Gilbert house as the day went on. Caroline went home, despite how much she wanted to stay and watch how the situation with Klaus and Faye would unfold. Nothing would happen though and Faye assured her of that.

Lacey stayed for a while before deciding to go home. She had offered to take Faye home too, but she had declined and said she was would be there for the night. If she didn't, she would be up all night worrying about Klaus, the man she loved.

Ever since the conversation that made her finally realize everything, every time she took a sneaky glance at Klaus, her cheeks heated up and she had to turn away quickly. Nothing had changed between them, but at the same time everything did.

History was repeating itself as Klaus and Faye sat in the living room with a chessboard in between them that the strawberry blonde had found. Faye was very competitive and was a horrible sore loser when it came to chess, especially having beat Klaus before. At the moment, he was taking her down.

"I'm pretty sure that was an illegal move." Faye pointed out to Klaus after he had taken one of her knights off the board.

"I've been around long enough to know the rules, love." He countered as his turn finished, "Your turn."

"I call bullshit." She announced to him, "I'm not going because you cheated."

"You're just being a sore loser."

"Yeah and you're being a cheater."

Klaus chuckled at her before deciding to abide to her wishes and move his pieces back in place, as did she with hers, "Fine, we'll restart only this once."

"We won't need to again if you don't cheat." Faye moved one of her pawns up a space and sat back again. It began a sequence of them going back and forth, moving their pieces to the spots they needed to take down the other's king.

As it went on, Klaus began some small talk that didn't mean much, "Did Lacinia in form you she left my brother a message?"

"Elijah?" Faye asked him and his nod was a confirmation, "Yeah. She just wanted to tell him what happened. I knew he wouldn't answer though. I've been calling him for the past few months and screaming down the phone when it goes to voicemail which is all the time. Maybe he'll hear it this time and come home."

Klaus only shrugged, seeming a bit saddened by the fact, and moved one of his bishops on his turn. Faye took it off the board in her next turn with a knight. This time she was winning.

"This is nice." The strawberry blonde commented as they played.

"It's nice now that you're winning?" Klaus questioned with a raised brow.

"Well, yes, now that you mention it." Faye said before continuing, "I mean, just us, right here. It's simple and there's nothing going wrong really if you ignore the fact that you're trapped in her against your will because some of my friends are terrible people at points. It reminds of that motel we played chess in that one night."

The Original hybrid grinned at the thought of that night, "I remember."

"It was the only night that entire summer I didn't feel like murdering you." Faye revealed to him, "In the morning I went back to wanting to kill you again, but staying up and playing chess just somehow made me hate you a little less."

"What about now?"

She loved him now, but he couldn't know that. That had to be a secret for now.

"You know how I feel now." Faye responded, referring to her confession of having feelings for him. He only nodded, knowing. He went back to their game, but she couldn't.

"Klaus?" She got his attention again. When he looked back up at her, she spoke, "I guess I forgive you. What you did was shitty and you probably don't deserve my forgiveness right now, it's not even really mine to give, but I just had to."

"Thank you." Klaus replied to her, "For your forgiveness and being here, love."

"Honestly, I don't think I would want to be anywhere else."

The two were smiling at eachother in the worst situation possible, with a dead body not to far from them. It was just like that night in the motel where things had changed for Faye and Klaus, only this time, it was more.
