EIGHT ▶ BEFORE THE FULL MOON

Faye tapped her foot as she stood in the middle of the dirty cave three days after she and Elena had visited Katherine. She had her school bag, knowing she was going to be late if she had gone back to the boardinghouse and got dressed after this.

"Let's do it." Damon said as Stefan and him took one side of the tomb door each, "1,2,3."

They pulled the stone door off the entrance of the tomb, exposing the inside to Faye. They placed the stone aside on the wall. Faye walked up to the entrance, a smirk on her face.

"Oh, Kitty Kat. You're favorite hybrid is here along with your favorite boy toys." Faye pulled a blood bag out of her bag and held it up, "I brought some vamp juice!"

Katherine slowly stumbled around the corner, looking hungrier than she did all those days ago. She eyed the blood bag hungrily, wanting to pounce on it. Faye instead took the tub and stuck it in her mouth, draining the bag dry. Katherine rolled her eyes at her.

"Please... come on in. There's plenty of room for all of us." Katherine told the three standing outside the tomb.

Damon scowled, "I'd rather poke my eyes out."

"Mmm, they're such pretty eyes."

"We're here for the moonstone." Stefan told Katherine.

"Feel like tossing it over?" Damon asked her.

"Tell you what, you get your little witch to hocus pocus me out of here, you can have whatever you want." Katherine tried to negotiate.

Faye frowned, "I thought you liked it in here. Nice and safe where big bad Klaus can't get to you."

Katherine shrugged, "I've had time to reconsider."

"Meaning you're hungry." Damon said.

"I'm starving, Damon. And dirty. But above all, I'm bored." Katherine progressively got closer to the entrance, stumbling and grasping at the wall as she did, "At least running from Klaus wasn't boring - so here's the deal: you get me out of here, you get the moonstone and I'll disappear from Mystic Falls forever."

Stefan and Damon looked at each other, wondering what they should do. Katherine began walking away, "Let me know what you decide." She held up the moonstone as she staggered back in to the darkness of the tomb.

__

Faye stood in the Gilbert kitchen after they had been let in by Elena. She sat on the counter, eating some of the breakfast items laid out for the Gilbert children. They were all talking about what Katherine had said.

"You don't believe her, do you?" Elena asked the Salvatore brothers.

Damon shook his head, "No, of course not. We just want the moonstone."

"According to Rose's friend Slater, there's a way to destroy the spell that Klaus wants to break." Stefan told her.

Faye grinned and threw her hands in the air, "No spell, no doppelganger sacrifice. Ergo, you live. Yay!"

"How do you destroy it?" Elena asked them.

"By releasing it from the moonstone." Stefan explained.

"How do you guys even know this is gonna work?"

"Cause we have a crafty witch on our side." Damon said as he snatched a grape from Faye before she could pop it in to her mouth. She growled before turning away so he couldn't reach the food anymore.

Elena put two and two together, "You discussed it with Bonnie."

"She agreed to do anything she could to help us." Stefan said.

"It's Katherine who has the moonstone. She's not gonna give it to you." Elena told him.

"We're gonna get it from her."

Faye looked at Elena, "Well, what he means to say is, we will pry it from her cold, dead hand if we have to."

"Bonnie just needs to find a way to release the seal long enough for us to get in, get the moonstone, and get out in time for her to return it." Stefan responded.

Elena huffed, "Wow. I mean, it sounds like you guys already have it all planned out."

"Yep. We're awesome." Damon reached over and high fived Faye.

"Except for one thing. I don't want you to do it."

Faye, Stefan, and Damon all gave her incredulous looks.

"What are you talking about? Elena, we don't have a choice." Stefan argued.

"What about Klaus?" Elena asked.

Stefan shrugged, "We'll find him right after we get the moonstone."

"Is that before or after he kills everyone that I care about, including the three of you." Elena pointed from Stefan to Damon and then to Faye. Faye and Damon's eyes widened at the thought of Elena caring about them. Faye had been nothing but a complete bitch to her.

"That's sweet, Elena, but, if we can de-spell the moonstone, we can save your life." Faye told her.

"I know. Everybody keeps saying that." Elena got up and left the room. Everyone left exchanged looks.

Faye sighed before getting up, "I'm gonna go to school." She then yelled up the stairs, "Jeremy! Give me a ride!"

"Okay!"

She took another piece of toast and put it in to her mouth. She waved goodbye to the Salvatores before leaving the house, going to wait in Jeremy's car.

__

Once they were at school, Jeremy and Faye went their separate ways. Faye had gone to all of her classes throughout the day, taking the time to mess with Alaric while in his class. When she had her free period, she found Caroline and began walking with her. More like Faye was twirling around the courtyard.

"Why are you twirling?" Caroline asked her, "It's annoying."

"My dress flares out and it looks pretty." Faye giggled as she spun again.

Caroline smiled at her. Faye seemed like a child, but she wasn't. Her mind was still in an eight year old state partially. She had progressed in to a teenager of these times, but she still had her innocent moments.

"I need to talk to Tyler about the full moon." Faye told Caroline as she held out her arms, "He needs to know I'm here to help him still."

"Why do you want to help him?" Caroline asked as she walked ahead of her.

Faye stopped, turning to look at Caroline, "I was eight when I turned. I didn't know what was going on and I had no warning. I remember it hurt like hell; my bones cracking. Even though I've only really felt the real pain of it once, I want to be there for him. He's my pack, like you are."

"And you take care of pack." Caroline whispered with a smile.

"Always will, Care Bear." Faye turned around on the spot she stood, looking around for Tyler. She saw him with Matt, who she hadn't met yet despite the fact she had been here for months. Caroline inhaled sharply at the sight of him, "Come on."

Faye led the way over to Tyler, Caroline following behind her. Matt had began walking away from where he was playing basket ball with him and ran in to them. Caroline smiled at him.

"Matt." Caroline greeted, "I don't think you've met Faye."

"Daniels. Faye Daniels." Faye stuck out her hand for Matt to shake.

"Matt Donovan." Matt said, shaking her hand with a smile.

"How are you?" Caroline asked.

"I -- I've been better. I gotta -- I gotta get to class." Matt walked away quickly, causing Caroline to sigh.

Tyler walked up to them and looked at Caroline, "You two still on the outs?"

"Looks like it." Caroline said sadly.

Faye took Tyler's arm in her hand, "You realize there's almost a full moon?"

"Vampires don't have enough problems, you want to take on mine?" Tyler asked her.

"I'm a hybrid, just so you know." Faye said, "And I want to help you. I know shifting fucking sucks ass."

"Have you even thought about it? The whole... wolf thing? Do you know what you're gonna do?" Caroline asked him.

"I have a plan."

"Well..?"

"Kind of private."

"Hold up." Faye said, "You're going to turn down me, a hybrid who knows everything about being a werewolf, shifts everyday, and is willing to shift with you. The student council vice president, head of the prom committee, not to mention she single-handedly organized this town's clean up campaign. And you're really gonna turn down our help?"

Tyler didn't reply, causing her to sigh.

"Look, Tyler. I want to help you." Faye said, "I told you the other night that I did and I really do. So, please. Let me help you shift and get through the full moon."

Tyler sighed and nodded, "Fine. We'll go after school."

__

Faye trudged through the forest, holding up her dress as she did. She made sure that she didn't step in any mud, liking her shoes.

"Why couldn't you have let me change clothes?" Faye asked, "I mean, I dressed to impress today and I liked this dress. Now its going to get ruined."

"You tore the shirt you borrowed from me the other day when you shifted." Caroline accused.

"It was ugly anyways. I did you a favor." Faye said.

Tyler looked at them, amused. He turned his head as he walked to talk to Caroline, "Matt's bumming pretty hard."

"I know. It's better this way." said Caroline.

"I get it."

"You do?"

"Yeah. You can't be honest with him." Caroline stopped and looked at Tyler who had stopped as well, "It's not really fair to be with someone and not really let them know who you are. I get it." Tyler began walking again and both girls followed him, "Right over here. There's a cellar that goes to our old property."

Faye sighed, "Brings back memories, doesn't it, Care? Me, naked, you, asking who the hell I was."

"Oh, don't remind me. I think I pissed myself when you ran out of the woods and tackled the other wolf." Caroline snorted.

Tyler's eyes widened, "That was you?"

"Of course it was. Who else?" Faye said, "So, the cellar."

"This is the old Lockwood property." Caroline told her as the three of them began walking down the steps of the cellar.

"Watch your step." Tyler told them.

"Like I need to-" Just as Faye said that, she tripped, but quickly saved herself with her hybrid reflexes, "Maybe I should watch my step."

Tyler turned on the flashlight as they entered the cellar. He moved it around, flashing it everywhere, "I'm guessing this is where Mason was headed the night he turned. It's this way." He headed further inside and the two girls followed after him cautiously.

"Did Mason tell you about this place?" Caroline asked him.

"Mason bolted before I triggered the curse, but I found these." Tyler shinned the light on the wall of the cave. Faye turned to look at it, seeing three deep scratch marks. Werewolf.

"Whoa. They look old." Caroline said.

Tyler moved the flashlight to show some chains on the wall, "And these bolts and chains. I need new chains, but the bolts could still hold."

"Hmm." Faye walked over to the wall and tugged on the chains with her strength. They surprisingly held on to the wall. Everyone began looking around the cave once more. Faye frowned when she came across a small nook in the wall. She pulled out what was in there.

"What's this?" She asked as she walked over to Tyler.

"I have no idea." Tyler said. Faye unwrapped the cloth covering it and found a leather bound journal. She handed it to him.

"Was it Mason's?" Caroline asked him.

Tyler took the journal and began flipping through all of the pages, landing on one. He began reading, ""August 31 -- My body is changing. I'm edgy, angry, impatient. I get so mad, I black out and forget what I say or do. I'm not myself, not since Jimmy's death. What's happening to me?"" He flipped farther in to the book before looking up at Faye and Caroline, "He chronicled everything." He stopped at another page, ""The full moon is tonight""

"Well, does he say what happened?" Faye asked.

Tyler flipped the paged and saw a memory stick taped to the back of it. He slid it out of place before holding it up from the girls to see. All of them looked at it, puzzled.

__

Caroline, Faye, and Tyler were all squeezed on the sofa in the Forbes living room. Faye had brought her laptop over with her after she had changed at the boarding house. Tyler inserted the memory stick in to it. The video on it began playing.

"It's September 15 -- 2 hours from the first full moon since I triggered the curse" Mason voice came through the speakers.

"He taped his first transformation." Tyler said. He paused the video and looked over at Faye, who had Mason's journal.

Faye flipped through the book, "Um... There's nothing" She found something and held the journal towards Tyler, "September 16th, he -- he wrote about everything the next day." Tyler began fast forwarding through the video as Faye read aloud, ""I chose the garage. I could deadbolt the door. It was far from the street so no one could hear. I bolted hooks to the floor for the carabiners"."

Tyler slowed the video down to watch it as Caroline looked up at them, "Like for mountain climbing?"

"Retractable cables." He sped the video up and slowed it once again to see Mason drinking golden water from a bottle and coughing it up, "What's he doing?"

"It's.... wolfsbane." Faye told him before continuing to read aloud, ""I diluted wolfsbane with water to weaken myself, but I could barely get it down without puking. It felt like I was drinking battery acid. Over an hour passed and nothing happened. It got so quiet I could hear my own blood pumping. That's when...""

Mason screams echoed throughout the room as they watched him tug on the cables. Caroline put her hand over her mouth in shock. Faye sat there, flashbacks of her first turn in mind. She continued reading anyways.

""I kept thinking I'd black out and not feel it. But I did. I... I felt all of it"" Faye finished, looking up at the screen. Mason had collapsed to the ground. crying for help.

Caroline gasped, "How long is it?"

"We're three hours in." Tyler responded in a shaky voice. He sped up the video, "Four hours." He continued to fast forward it, "Five hours. How long does this last?" He asked them.

Caroline took the journal from Faye and began looking for an answer, but never responded. Tyler continued watching the video just as Mason's began to contort. Tyler couldn't handle it anymore. He paused they video and ran a hand through his hair with tears in his eyes.

"I can't -- I can't do that. Faye, whatever that was, I can't go through that." Tyler said to her.

Faye sighed before taking him in to her arms, giving him a tight hug. She couldn't bear to see him like this.

__

Caroline shut the book quickly, "You know what? I don't think we should read this anymore."

Tyler looked up from Faye's hug and frowned, "Why? What did you read?"

She sighed, "There's a... a reason it's called a "curse", Tyler."

Tyler walked over, took the journal off the table and opened it, ""Unimaginable pain. I thought it would never end. It was the worst night of my life"" He laughed humorlessly, shut the diary, and then slammed it down on the table. He sat back down next to Faye.

"The transformation speeds up over time." Faye told him, "So, if you can just get through this first time, then..."

Tyler cut her off, "Why are you helping me?"

"What do you mean?" She asked with a frown.

"Why do you both care?" Tyler asked, " Caroline, we've never been friends before. And Faye, I just met you a week ago."

"That's not true. I've known you my entire life, Tyler. I-"

Tyler stopped Caroline, "We've never been close. Not like this."

She sighed and sat down next to him and Faye, "I don't know. You just seem like you... like you kind of need it." Caroline said, "I was alone when I turned. I had no control over my body or my... urges. And... I killed somebody. I don't want that to happen to you. I don't want you to be alone."

The doorbell rung and Caroline ran off to get it. When she was gone, Tyler looked at Faye.

"What about you?" He asked, "Do you just go around and help people?"

"I was eight when I first shifted, Tyler. I had no idea what was going on, what I did, or why it hurt so bad." Faye inhaled sharply, "That's the one thing out of all the moments I've had for eight years that I can remember. The pain and the screams of my parents when I tore them to shreds. I had no control over it." She glanced at him, "Like Caroline said, I don't want that to happen to you."

Tyler grabbed her hand and squeezed it, "Thank you."

"You're welcome." Faye replied, "Caroline's been out there for a while, hasn't she." She got up and walked out to the front door, opening it. She saw Matt and Caroline standing there in each others arms, "Caroline! Leave your boyfriend and lets go! Me and Tyler thought you got kidnapped."

Caroline chuckled, but the look across Matt's face wasn't good. She said a quick goodbye to him before going inside to join Tyler and Faye once again.

__

Tyler had gone home soon after Matt had showed. He wanted to sleep good before the full moon in a few days. Faye didn't mind. She was going to stay with Caroline that night since she did not want to hear Damon and Rose all night once again.

"We should get you a boyfriend." Caroline said to the red head as she braided her hair, "You look lonely."

"I'm not lonely. I've got everything I need." Faye replied.

"How about Tyler?" Caroline asked her, "You like Tyler."

"It's a bond. When you have a pack, they feel like brothers and sisters to you unless you're the Luna or your mated to one of the other wolves.." Faye explained to her, "So, no Tyler."

"So, no Tyler." Caroline said, "How about Jeremy?"

Faye looked at her with wide eyes, "Caroline! I don't want a boyfriend. I'm a lone wolf kind of girl."

"What about sex?" Caroline questioned next.

"Please don't go there." Faye told her, covering her ears.

"Such a prude. You're a vampire and you're eighteen! Go out, have some fun." Caroline insisted, "But not now, it's girls night."

Faye laughed as Caroline tied her hair off, letting the braid fall on her shoulder. Faye plopped down on the blonde girls bed. She smiled up at the ceiling, but that smile was soon ruined when she had gotten a call from Jeremy.

__

"Stefan! Stefan!" Faye yelled as she ran down the steps of the tomb. Elena ran after her, wanting to see Stefan, Damon slammed the both up against the wall as soon as they entered.

"Don't you dare." He growled at them

"Stefan's in there, Damon! How could you let this happen?" Faye growled, "He's stuck in the tomb! He's never getting out!"

"What are you talking about? I was too busy saving Elena from her crazy kamikaze mission." Damon told her.

Faye scowled at him, "You should have waited until I was there to get the moonstone! I told you that!"

"You didn't even have to go after the moonstone in the first place!" Elena yelled at him.

"Bonnie was willing to help now. It was the right call." Damon said.

Faye looked at him in disbelief, "The right call? How was any of this the right call?!" She punched Damon in the chest, "Damon, let go of me! Damon, let go of me! Let go of me! Let go of me!" She got tired of being held and headbutted Damon. He fell back, letting her go. She rushed towards the tomb, making sure she didn't walk in. Elena stayed behind. Damon had managed to catch her before she could see Stefan at all.

Stefan appeared in the doorway, a solemn look on his face. Faye sighed, "Of all the idiot plans, Stefan."

"Yeah."

"I'll find a way to get you out." Faye told him.

"Ah, it's all right. I'll handle myself. Bonnie has the moonstone. You and Damon work with her. Try to figure out how to de-spell it." Stefan instructed her.

Faye groaned, "You martyr yourself in a tomb and I get partnered with a semi-competent witch. Wonderful."

"Help keep Elena away from here." Stefan told her, "She'll come in the first chance she get."

"Yeah. 'Cause that'll be easy." She said sarcastically.

"Promise me. No matter what happens. You'll protect her." Faye scrunched up her nose in disgust, "Faye. Please."

Damon walked up behind Faye and looked at his brother, "Don't worry, Stef. We promise."

They both walked away from the tomb, making Katherine smirk at Stefan, "That right there was the biggest mistake you've ever made."

Stefan silently walked past her in to the recesses of the cave.

__

Faye didn't go home that night. She stayed in the woods, feeling comfortable there since she knew Stefan was not far away.
