01. The Possibilities

In the middle of Yonkers, New York in a flat with a view of the Hudson River a young newlywed couple sits at their kitchen table packing for an art class at the local community center. "I wonder what were going to paint today?" Laura asks as she places her stencil kit in her grey bag.

"I heard Cindy talking about bringing in a new art model?" Joel says as he wipes his hand on his white tee that has been covered in paint from years of art classes.

Laura sits down on one of the stools to zip her bag, "Another new model?" She began to tie her hair up, "What happened to the last one?" Laura put an extra hair tie in the side pouch of her bag.

Joel shrugged as he began to zip up his own bag. "You ready?" He turned to ask his wife.

She nodded and together they two walked out of their apartment as the December winds bit at them. "I cant wait to leave but I will also miss this place." Laura said as she pointed at a piece of graffiti.

"Just think about our lives in ten years." Joel said as he wrapped his arm around Laura's shoulders, "We will have a nice home away from the hustle and bustle of the city." Laura leaned into him listening to his words. "A few kids." Laura let out a laugh, "Ill have published at least four books, you'll have a job at some record label." The two turned the street corner and saw the community center ahead of them, "We will not be struggling, we will still have Wednesdays off and finally, we we be happier then we are now."

"To the dream!" Laura yelled before walking into the community center.

Joel followed after her, "To the dream." He whispered under his breath.

The two sat down next to each other Laura began to pull her sketch book out of her bag and open it to the nearest blank page. Joel did the same. They both looked when a tall woman with long blonde hair that had a hint of maroon on the edged, "Class today instead of drawing people." She pauses looking at Joel and Laura her star pupils, "We will be drawing objects" Cindy walked into the back room and walked out with a bike. "Draw this bike but give it an ordinary background. Something that make the bike stand out and make you thing 'Whats this bike doing here?' A half hour for drawing then another for coloring. begin."

Joel gets right into the drawing doing a rough sketching already knowing he wants the background to be the Jurassic period. Just for the reason that he gets to draw dinosaurs. His head down at the paper then up at the bike every few minutes. Laura on the other hand takes her time looking at the bike more than her drawing, she then makes careful edits then she adds the background which for her is a sound-stage. They both finish sketching just as the bell dings. "Use pastels, watercolors, make it pretty, make it a tragedy!" Cindy bellows as the twelve people who are in the class get up and begin to grab coloring supplies.Laura grabs dark colors to make the bright neon orange bike stand out while Joel grabs light colors that don't match the bike to make it stand out more. They both met in an art class when they were fourteen they began to date a year later They both grew up in Yonkers but no one in their families supported their dreams of being artists. Laura's grandma gave the couple who married right after high school her old apartment. The rent isn't cheap but its better than them moving back in with their parents who don't support them. This is why they dream of moving away from the city that has claimed the majority of their lives. They are both pulled out of daydreams of their future lives when the bell rings for the second and final time. "Pens down!" Cindy yells from her own easel where she was working on her own version of the bike drawing.

Cindy begins to make her lap around saving Joel and Laura for last, knowing theirs are going to have the best splash of personality. She makes critiques at almost everyone except them. "How are my star pupils?"

"Tired." Joel says as he shows her sketch book.

"Sorry to hear that Hun." (she calls everyone that) "I like the way you made the bike out shine the Jurassic. And How are you Hun?" Cindy turns to Laura as Joel begins to pack up his supplies.

"Eh as always." Laura says as Cindy traces the microphone she drew above the bike.

"The bike is you right?" Cindy asks before Laura can say 'no' "Recording at a studio, that's your dream isn't it?"

"I.. yeah." Laura says as Cindy walks away.

"Alright." Cindy the woman who is roughly ten years older than the both of them claps her hands together to get the classes attention. "Class dismissed." Everyone began to flood out of the tiny room. "Hey wait.." Cindy looked to the two of them. "Look at the builtin board I think there's a contest coming up that might be your forte."

"What kind of contest?" Joel asks as Laura get a look of intrigue on her face.

Cindy begins to pack her own things, "I'm not entirely sure but its creative, crazy and winner gets five million."

Laura let out a breathless laugh, "Five million." She looks at Joel with her jaw dropped, "Dollars!"

"Yes Hun five million dollars." Cindy went back behind her small desk. "Go take a look, have a good day you two."

Joel took a quick pace behind Laura as she ran to the builtin board, Her eyes began to scan the articles about classes then she saw it. "Enter to win five million, live in your own favorite decade in the span of one year." She looks at Joel then goes back to the paper, "You must continue to live in today society as a character from this era of your own creation." Laura pulls a stub with the phone and email on it as she reads, "Please call or email with any questions or when to sign up."

"That's crazy." Joel said placing his hand on the small of Laura s back.

Laura looked up at him holding the stub, "Wanna have dinner and discuss?"

Joel nodded his head and with that they two walked out of the community center with their future in Laura's gloved hand.
