Hundreds of bombs drop outside as homes are destroyed and lives are lost. Edmund Pevensie and Zoe Bradbury watch from the window of the Pevensie's home as their mothers run into the room.
"Edmund! Zoe! Get away from there!" Their mothers yell as they pull their children away from the window.
"Peter!" Edmund's mother calls for her oldest son while grabbing Edmund. "What do you think you're doing?" Peter quickly runs into the room. "Peter, quickly, the shelter. Now!"
"Come on!" Peter says as he grabs Edmund.
"Wait..." Edmund says as he fights against Peter.
"Come on, leave it!" Peter argues with him as Zoe runs to find the Pevensie sisters.
"Mommy!" The youngest, Lucy, calls from her bed.
"Lucy, come on! Come on, quickly!" Zoe says as she picks Lucy up before checking to make sure Susan is with them.
"Run! Run! Hurry!" Their mothers order as they lead the way to the shelter.
Zoe sets Lucy down as they reach the shelter before turning to make sure Peter had gotten Edmund out.
"Wait! Dad!" Edmund yells as he wrestles free from Peter's grip and runs back towards the house.
"Ed!" Zoe calls as she quickly grabs him, pulling him back towards the shelter. "Stay here. I got it." Zoe shoves Edmund towards his mother, glancing at her own before running back to the house.
"Zoe, no!" Her mother calls before Peter takes off after the girl, who has been a thorn in his side since the day Susan was born.
"I'll get her!" Peter calls back to the mothers as he runs after her.
"Peter, come back!" His mother yells but his main focus is the girl he can't help but to love to hate.
Edmund stands with Zoe's mother by the door waiting anxiously for the return of his brother and the girl that he considered a sister. Zoe had been next door neighbors with the Pevensies for as long as she could remember. She is younger than Peter but older than Susan.
Even as babies, Zoe and Peter were as close as ever until Susan was born. Zoe grew attached to baby Susan until she was old enough to play with her then they became the best of friends, leaving Peter hating Zoe which made Zoe hate him because of how cold he became towards her.
When Edmund was born, it was one of the greatest days of Zoe's life. She felt as if she had her own little brother that she could protect. Then came sweet little Lucy, the one that brought them all together even when they all hated each other. Zoe's and Peter's relationship steadily grew worse as Zoe always took Edmund's side.
"Z! Come here!" Peter yells as he chases her through the house. "Zoe! Get down!" Peter pulls Zoe down, covering her, as a bomb explodes outside his home causing the window to bust. Zoe turns to look at Peter in shock before realizing how close their faces are. Peter sucks in a breath as he realizes the same thing before he lashes out at her because he lets the thought of her being pretty cross his mind. "Come on, you idiot, run!" Zoe grabs a picture frame as Peter starts to pull her. "Get out!" Peter pushes Zoe in front of him as they run back to the shelter.
"Come on! Hurry!" Edmund calls as he sees them and a plane flies overhead. Peter pushes Edmund and Zoe into the bunker before closing the door.
"Why can't you think of anyone but yourself? You're so selfish! You could've got us killed!" Peter yells at Zoe and Edmund, who collapsed on one of the beds after Zoe handed him the picture.
"Stop it!" Zoe yells at Peter before pulling Edmund into her arms.
"Why can't either of you just do as you're told?" Peter asks them while glaring at Zoe, who glares back before she turns her attention back to Edmund.
The next morning after everything was deemed safe, they made their way to the train station. Their mothers were shipping them off to some professor's house out in the country. Though Zoe didn't want to leave her home, she was ready for an adventure.
"You need to keep this on, darling. All right?" Lucy's mother tells her as she pins their destination on her. "You warm enough? Good girl."
"If Dad were here, he wouldn't make us go," Edmund says as his mother does the same to him.
"If Dad were here, it'd mean the war was over and we wouldn't have to," Peter retorts, causing Edmund to look down sadly.
"You will listen to your brother, won't you, Edmund?" His mother asks before she pulls Edmund into a hug and goes to kiss his cheek but he pulls away, causing Zoe to frown. His mother then pulls Peter into a hug as he hugs her back. "Promise me you'll look after the others."
"I will, Mum," Peter assures her.
"Good man," His mother tells him.
"All aboard! All aboard!" A man calls as Zoe's mother turns to her.
"Zoe," Her mother says before pulling her into a hug. "Be a big girl and help Peter look after the others." Zoe nods in understanding as she pulls away from her mother. "All right. Off you go." Zoe grabs Lucy's hand before they start making their way to the train. As they make it pass the crowd of people, Lucy tries to pull back towards her mother.
"Come on, Lucy. We have to stick together now. Everything's gonna be all right. It's gonna be fine," Peter assures Lucy as he grabs her other hand before they get on the train. Zoe, Lucy, and Peter find a window to look for their mothers.
"Bye-bye, dear," Zoe's mother says as she sees Zoe.
"Bye! We'll miss you! See you soon," Peter, Lucy, and Zoe call before the train takes off.
After what feels like ages, they're stop finally comes and they get off in what appears to be the middle of nowhere. They hear a car coming and quickly make their way off of the platform. The car drives right past them, leaving them alone.
"The professor knew we were coming," Susan says as she looks at Peter and Zoe worriedly.
"Perhaps we've been incorrectly labeled," Edmund suggests as he looks at his tag.
"Come on, hup!" Can be heard coming from the distance before they see a horse and buggy. "And whoa. Whoa." The lady in the buggy stops beside them.
"Mrs. Macready?" Peter asks as the lady looks at them.
"I'm afraid so," Mrs. Macready answers, causing Zoe and Susan to look at each other worried. "Is this it, then? Haven't you brought anything else?"
"No, ma'am. It's just us," Zoe answers her as Lucy nods.
"Small favors," Mrs. Macready says before they get into the buggy and head to their new home for the time being.
"Come on. Good girl. Come on. Come on." Mrs. Macready leads them into the huge house. "Professor Kirke is not accustomed to havin' children in this house. And, as such, there are a few rules we need to follow. There will no shoutin'. Or runnin'. No improper use of the dumbwaiter." Susan goes to touch a statue. "No touchin' of the historical artifacts!" Peter, Zoe, and Edmund hold back laughs at Susan getting in trouble. "And above all, there shall be no disturbin' of the professor.
That night Susan is helping Lucy settle into bed while Peter looks out the window and Zoe looks around the room.
"The sheets feel scratchy," Lucy complains as Peter and Zoe join Susan.
"Wars don't last forever, Lucy. We'll be home soon," Zoe tells her with a smile.
"Yeah, if home's still there," Edmund says as he walks into the room, causing Zoe to frown at his bad attitude.
"Isn't it time you were in bed?" Susan asks him with a glare.
"Yes, Mum," Edmund retorts as he rolls his eyes.
"Ed!" Peter scolds as Edmund leaves the room before turning back to Lucy. "You saw outside. This place is huge. We can do whatever we want here. Tomorrow's going to be great. Really."
The next morning instead of the sunshine they were expecting, it was raining. They are currently cooped up in the library much to Zoe's liking. Zoe loves books because it is a chance for her to escape from her world.
"'Gastrovascular.'" Susan says as she goes through the dictionary. "Come on, Peter. Gastrovascular."
"Is it Latin?" Peter asks her with a bored sigh.
"Yes," Susan answers him as she looks in the dictionary.
"Is it Latin for 'worst game ever invented?'" Edmund asks in a teasing tone, causing Zoe to giggle before Susan slams the dictionary closed.
"We could play hide and seek," Lucy says excitedly as she walks over to Peter.
"But we're already having so much fun," Peter says sarcastically, causing Susan to glare at him.
"Come on, Peter, please. Pretty please?" Lucy begs, causing Peter to give in.
"One, two, three, four..." Peter starts counting which causes Zoe to smile.
"What?" Edmund asks as Peter gets up and puts his head on the wall.
"five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven..." Peter continues to count as the others rush out of the room. Zoe follows after Lucy knowing she would need some help finding a good place to hide. "24, 25, 26..." Susan hides in a window seat while Lucy runs for some big curtains but Edmund pushes her out of the way.
"I was here first!" Edmund says as Lucy glares at him.
"Come on," Zoe says as she grabs Lucy's hand before giving Edmund a scolding look. They start trying doors to find the second one opened. Lucy and Zoe look in amazement as the only thing in the room is something covered by a sheet. Lucy and Zoe walk over before pulling the sheet off to reveal a magnificent wardrobe.
"81, 82, 83," Peter counts as Zoe and Lucy hear him getting closer.
"You get in," Zoe tells Lucy before going over to the door to listen for Peter.
Lucy gets into the wardrobe, peeping out the door until she hears Peter's voice. Lucy starts backing into the wardrobe before her hand touches something prickly. She turns around to find a snow covered tree. She walks out into a snow covered woods, causing her to look around in amazement.
"Lucy?" Zoe asks as she looks into the wardrobe. Zoe notices that it was cold in the wardrobe but didn't think anything of it. She starts looking for Lucy in the coats before she trips over something, landing in snow. "Impossible." Zoe looks around in amazement as she slowly stands up.
"Zoe! You're here too!" Lucy says excitedly as she sees the girl.
"Where is here?" Zoe asks in shock, since she is having a hard time believing that it is real.
"Narnia," Lucy answers excitedly. "We have to show the others. I've been here for hours." Zoe looks at Lucy confused before following the girl into the wardrobe. Zoe only noticed Lucy gone for a few minutes not hours.
"It's all right! I'm back!" Lucy yells as they exit the wardrobe before Lucy quickly runs out into the hallway. "It's all right! I'm back! I'm all right!"
"Shut up! He's coming!" Edmund says as he peeps his head out of the curtains.
Zoe looks at the wardrobe confused before walking back in only to be met with the back wall of the wardrobe. Zoe knew then that she must have imagined the snow before she walks into the hall as Peter walks up.
"You know, I'm not sure you three have quite got the idea of this game," Peter says as he looks at them confused.
"Weren't you wondering where I was?" Lucy asks as she looks at them confused.
"That's the point. That was why he was seeking you," Edmund answers her as he rolls his eyes.
"Does this mean I win?" Susan asks as she walks up.
"I don't think Lucy wants to play anymore," Peter tells her.
"I've been gone for hours," Lucy says as she looks at them confused.
Lucy starts to explain about the wardrobe as they all enter the room. Susan reaches through the coats in the wardrobe before knocking on the back of it. Edmund knocks back from behind the wardrobe.
"Lucy, the only wood in here is the back of the wardrobe," Susan tells her as she exits the wardrobe.
"One game at a time, Lu. We don't all have your imagination," Peter says before he, Susan, and Edmund start walking towards the door.
"But I wasn't imagining!" Lucy calls after them.
"That's enough, Lucy," Susan tells her looking at Zoe for help.
"I wouldn't lie about this! Zoe was there!" Lucy argues causing everyone to look at Zoe, who was still unsure of what she saw.
"Well, I believe you," Edmund says as he steps forward.
"You do?" Lucy asks as she looks at him confused.
"Yeah, of course. Didn't I tell you about football field in the bathroom cupboards?" Edmund answers her sarcastically.
"Will you just stop?" Peter asks him with a glare. "You just have to make everything worse, don't you?"
"It was just a joke!" Edmund defends as he glares back at Peter.
"When are you gonna learn to grow up?" Peter asks him as he shakes his head.
"Shut up! You think you're Dad, but you're not!" Edmund yells as he gets in Peter's face before running out of the room.
"Well, that was nicely handled," Susan tells Peter before walking away.
"But... it really was there," Lucy says sadly as she glances back at the wardrobe.
"Susan's right, Lucy. That's enough," Peter says before walking out of the room. Lucy looks at the wardrobe sadly before closing the door on it.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Lucy asks Zoe, who kneels down to Lucy's level with a small smile.
"I'm having a very hard time believing what I saw was real. I'm sorry. But it doesn't matter what I believe, Lu. As long as you believe that it was there then it really was," Zoe answers her, causing Lucy to smile and nod in understanding before they leave the room.
That night, Zoe's words play over and over in Lucy's head before she gets up and puts on her boots. Lucy sneaks out of her room to go back to the wardrobe. Edmund happens to walk out of his room and starts to follow her. As Lucy opens the wardrobe a gust of wind blows out her candle, causing her to smile before she runs inside the wardrobe.
"Lucy. Where are you?" Edmund says as he walks into the room with the wardrobe before he opens the wardrobe. "Boo!" Edmund looks around confused since he doesn't see Lucy. "Lucy. Hope you're not afraid of the dark." Edmund closes the door on the wardrobe while he starts looking through the coats before he trips over a branch, landing in the snow. "Lucy, I think I believe you now."
