Scene 5: [Shelby's dad's grave, Shelby and Mom kneeling staring at it]

Mom

He was a good husband, your father. We could never just get along. I guess I was upset he couldn't save you both without a problem from the car. I know it's not his fault, and that means you can't blame yourself for Fae. I called the nurse back asking why she didn't tell you. She told me what she heard you say. There is nothing anyone of us could have done. And I probably should have told you sooner.

Shelby

Told me what?

Mom

Nothing what Fae was facing is because of that day. She was born premature and we knew she had certain problems with her health. It's actually a miracle that she survived this long.

Shelby

But we're twins, wouldn't we both be premature?

Mom

Not exactly. The thing was you were born on the same day but not to the same mother. I'm sorry Shelby, your mother actually used your father for a sperm donor, but when she got sick and realized she couldn't take care of you like she wanted she located your father to take you. She died in labor, and with us having babies the same day we decided it was best to just tell you two that you were fraternal twins. Neither of you knew the truth, until today.

Shelby

You've always been my mother, telling me I came from someone else yet you still treated me as your own just shows me how much more you care, but why didn't you just tell us? I understand for when we were kids but we're both 27 now, surely you might as well considered it once.

Mom

Your father asked me not to, he said he loved seeing the bond you guys shared and didn't want it to change.

Shelby

It wouldn't have.

Mom

Your father wouldn't hear me say the same thing, he made me promise. I'm sorry for keeping it from you, and I know he won't forgive me telling you the truth, but I couldn't let you go on believing it was your fault.

[they hug]

Shelby

I'm going to marry Arthur, I'll do it for both of them and myself, and you. I know they wouldn't want us to haunt or lives for them. Also it wasn't right me leaving Arthur when he was trying to re-propose like I did. I have to fix this.

Mom

Let's just stay here for a little longer, your sister didn't want to be buried so I was trying to see if there was somewhere your father wanted her ashes to go. Just waiting for some kind of sign.

[they remain at the grave until 8, depressing goodbye music plays in the background.]
