Scene 1: [Shelby and Arthur sitting on a boat in the middle of a moonlit lake]

Shelby

Today has been wonderful Arthur, a picnic in the park, a horse carriage through the woods, and now a gondola under the moon.

Arthur

I know everything has been hard lately, with all of the family crisis' you've been facing. I want to be there for you, not only when you need me or to celebrate the good moments in life. I want to be with you when you cut your finger, when you sing in the shower, while you decide which pair of shoes matches your outfit.

[Gets down on one knee and pulls out a ring]

Will you marry me Shelby?

[Small tears glaze Shelby's eyes]

Shelby

I can't.

Arthur

What's wrong?

[Shelby starts busting down crying and turns away]

Arthur

Shelby, I want to be with you, I want our lives to be one. I don't care what troubles you're facing, the thing is you don't have to face them alone.

Shelby

I can't Arthur, that's just it I can't marry you.

Arthur

But don't you love me?

Shelby

I'm sorry but no.

[Shelby turns away from Arthur. After a minute she jumps out of the boats and swims away.]
