Chapter Two

P r o m

°°*°°

I was walking to my first class, but not alone this time. I had made a friend, for once. She was a loner, like me, and our friendship just kind of happened over a partner project.

"Chris," she said, "that guy over there is walking towards us."

"Luke?" I asked when he was right in front of us. "Hey, it's been a while."

"A few months," he said. "Chris, can I talk talk to you in private?"

I looked at my friend. "Um, I guess. I'll see you in class, Diana."

"Okay," she said. When she was behind him, and he couldn't see, she gave me a wide smile and a thumbs up. I laughed at her antics, but looked back at Luke afterwards.

"So, what did you want?" I asked.

He bit his lip nervously, putting a hand through his blond hair. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me."

"Me?" I asked. "Why?" I quickly went to explain after he gave me this weird look. "I mean, I'm just a freshman. I have issues, one friend. You're a senior. You have tons of friends, probably, and your mom is the principal! Plus, we've only talked once."

"Yeah, but I don't really have luck with most girls, they don't like the thought of dating the principal's son. Fear of break up and a living hell school life." He sucked in some breath. "Is that a no?"

It was my turn to suck in some breath. I looked around our surroundings, something I do when I'm thinking about serious things. After going through the pros and cons, I looked at him with a smile. "Sure, I'll go."

"Awesome!" he said. "Actually, senior prom is this-"

"You want me to be your prom date?" My eyes widened. "Of course I'll go to prom with you!" I reached up and gave him a huge hug. "But, isn't it to late to get tickets?"

"My mom bought me two and told me I had to get a date, she didn't care who. So yeah, I picked you." He sighed. "Thanks so much for accepting. I didn't think you would."

When we went to prom it was absolutely perfect. For once my mom helped me go shopping, my dad didn't fight my mom over something, and my brother stayed sober for a day.

"Honey, you look beautiful," my mom said to me after I had gotten ready.

"Thanks, mom." I walked out of the room to see my dad and brother sitting on the couch talking. The second they saw me they stood up. "What do you guys think?" I asked.

"You look beautiful," my dad said. "He'll love your look."

My dad was right. After Luke came to pick me up, when we were walking to his car, he whispered in my ear that I looked beautiful.

When I was at the prom, I didn't just look beautiful. For once in my life, I felt beautiful.

I didn't think it would last long after prom, though. I figured it was a once in a lifetime thing.

I was wrong, though. We continued to go out on dates, and even spent time together in school. Luke, Diana, and I officially became a group of friends, and on the graduation day for the seniors, Luke and I were officially a couple.
