When Jack came back out of the bathroom, he looked like himself again. I had changed into my pj's and settled myself into the crease of the couch that formed whenever I wasn't at school or playing football.
I took out the collection of Disney movies that my mom had owned.
"What do you want to watch first?" I asked.
Jack sorted through the pile, then grinned widely. He held up Pocahontas.
I laughed and popped the DVD into the player. As the beginning credits started rolling, I saw a flash out of the corner of my eye.
"Jack?" I said suspiciously. "What was that?"
"Nothing," he said quickly. Then I got a Snapchat notification from Jack on my phone. I quickly opened it.
It was a picture of me, with a border of hearts, and a filter that said "Jack's Friday Night". The caption showed that it was Jack's streaks. I held my phone up to him.
"Oh. Forgot I had a streak with you," he said. We laughed.
A few minutes later, Dad came down the stairs.
"Ol?" he said. "Your eye appointment is scheduled for tomorrow at 11."
I groaned.
"Dad! I'm giving Jack a ride to Alex's going away party tomorrow! I'm not dragging him to an eye doctor!"
Before Dad could answer, Jack butted in.
"It'll be fine, Coach," he said, grinning. "I'm excited to see what glasses he ends up getting."
"Are you sure you want to sit through that?" I asked, praying for him to yes.
"Of course!" he said. I breathed a little sigh of relief.
As Dad went back upstairs, Jack turned to me.
"Ol? Can I ask you something?"
Oh god. What was it?
"Um, sure." I paused the movie.
"Why do you hate parties so much?" he asked.
I sighed. I knew someone would ask this sooner or later.
"I don't hate them," I said. "Parties just aren't my thing. If I wasn't on the team, I would roll with a totally different crowd. Trust me."
"How many parties have you ever been to?" Jack said curiously.
I blushed and looked down at my hands.
"None," I mumbled.
"Wait- what?"
"None!" I said, much louder this time. "Stuff like that freaks me out. I- I have anxiety, okay?"
"Oh."
We were quiet for a few minutes after that. I unpaused the movie.
Jack cleared his throat.
"Well- I'm not leaving your side tomorrow night," he stated definitively. I turned red.
"You don't have to do that- honest-"
"No, man, I'm sticking with you," he said. "Unless you don't want me to," he added quickly.
"No, no, no, I didn't mean that at all!" I said. "I just meant- you don't have to stay around me if you don't want to."
"Dude, it is MY personal mission to make your first party a good one. If you don't enjoy it, we can go home," he said, giving me an encouraging smile.
God, Jack, you can't just DO that to me. Look at this kid- how can you NOT love him?
"Hey, Jack?" I said suddenly, remembering something.
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you like Dylan?"
Jack's face turned darker and he looked away from me to stare back at the TV.
"I'm fine with Dylan."
"Dude- I know that's not true."
Jack sighed and looked back at me.
"You want to know the truth?" he said.
I nodded.
"It's taken me a long time to find a group that I can hang with and be accepted by and be a part of. It's always been my fear that some other guy will come along and take that all away from me." He paused. "Dylan's a great guy- I just don't want to be replaced."
"Ohhh," I said slowly. I looked him in the eyes.
"Jack, if you think for a single second that this team would ever be complete without you, then I've failed as team captain. You may not be on the field with us, but you're just as important to the team as the rest of us."
Jack smiled.
"Thanks, Ol," he said, leaning in to hug me. He's so adorable and warm and sweet and-
"Alright, let's get back to our Pocahontas fest," he said, laughing. I laughed too and focused back on the screen.
We were sitting a little closer than we were before.
