Artemis Adhara never asks for a different lot in life.

The deserts of Tatooine are unforgiving but she never bemoans her misfortune. Once it became clear she was meant to suffer, Artemis swallowed every card dealt and stomached each allotted misery. Abandoned at eight years old and left without a single credit to her name, Artemis feels she can withstand most terrible things. Betrayal, loss, uncertainty — they cannot topple her. She survives the unsurvivable. She proves herself a girl of unique resilience.

When Artemis is seventeen, her luck changes.

Nabooian Senator Padmé Amidala, in a bid to expose the slave economy rampant in the Outer Rim and petition for Core-World interference, returns to Tatooine nine years after first stepping foot in Mos Espa. At this time, the slavers of the Hutt syndicate have their sights on Artemis and are relentless in their pursuits. For a year she knew not a moment of peace. She cannot find work. She can barely find food. For the sake of evading capture, Artemis very nearly starves and becomes desperate as starving animals do. She comes upon Amidala's visiting starship and tries to rob it, either to sell whatever prize she makes off with or to get arrested during the attempt and sent to prison. She almost yearns for the latter. Artemis has the distant hope that they ship her to Coruscant where the detention centers are more luxurious than anywhere she's ever stepped foot on Tatooine.

Artemis is caught, of course. But she is not punished.

Padmé Amidala is kinder than she need be. When she asks Artemis why she tried to steal, Artemis answers honestly.

I have nothing, she says. I'm being hunted and I haven't eaten in a week. If I go to prison, will I get to eat?

Padmé's eyes are soft. You don't have to go to prison. Would you like to come with me? I can help you.

     Yes. Yes. Help me.

So, Artemis goes with Padmé to Coruscant. The brilliance of the capital planet is almost too much for her to take in. She remains there for a few weeks, is fed and watered and given real medical care for the first time in her life. When Artemis gets her strength back, Padmé invites her to stay. She offers her a room and food and an apprenticeship along with the promise that one day, with hard work, she might become a great leader herself. Artemis is unconcerned with becoming great — she is mostly just happy to have a friend. She assists Padmé where she can, runs errands, studies hard, and learns how to keep her head above water in the world of galactic politics. Nobody asks where she came from and she does not tell them. Artemis is reborn. She could be anyone's daughter. It is the most blessed year of her life.

     But blessings cannot last forever.

The Republic is splitting at its seams. Each day, more and more systems defect and join Count Dooku's Separatist Alliance. On Tatooine, Artemis knew distantly that worlds were seceding from the Republic. Now she sees the mounting panic it causes up close. Many in the Senate feel that aggressive action must be taken — that the Republic must find its backbone and send troops to eradicate the Separatists' efforts completely. The creation of an army would mean the end of peace and diplomacy, Padmé insists tirelessly, but still a bill is proposed to raise forces to defend the Republic.

Padmé's position on the issue of war is not a popular one, and she tells Artemis she suspects it might put them in danger. Ultimately, she is correct. An attempt is made on Padmé's life, one so severe and so nearly successful that Chancellor Sheev Palpatine himself insists that Padmé be provided the strongest personal security available in all the galaxy: he turns to Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Knight in the elusive and ever-fascinating Jedi Order. The arrival of Kenobi, however, brings forth a new challenge the likes of which Artemis has never faced before.

With Kenobi comes Anakin Skywalker, a Padawan learner brimming with passion and audacity enough for ten Jedi. It is this boy that brings with him new and enticing possibilities, and it is this boy that just might be the first great, terrible thing Artemis Adhara cannot withstand.
