The Junior Goodwill Games committee gives her a personal invitation in the form of Don Tibbles, a man she hasn't seen since early childhood, standing on her doorstep. He says they want her because she's a good player but she knows when she's being used for PR. It's only fair that she uses them back, right?

Going into it, Lorelei Myrtle doesn't plan on making any friends. She just wants to get in, make her family look good, and get out. No mistakes, no attachments -- just some good old fashioned hockey. Fate seems to have other plans for her, though.

Not only do her teammates weasel their ways into her heart as they redefine what the sport means to her, but there's also this boy. This goofy boy with curly red hair and coke bottle glasses who stares at her like he's just met Madonna in person and goes out of his way to make her laugh. Falling head over heels was really the last thing on her list, but that Lester Averman has a metaphorical pen in his hands, and he's so dead set on crossing it off that she might just let him...
