Maplestar padded out of her den. She dipped her head to her deputy Thornscar.
The grayish silver tom dipped his head in response.
She continued padding along and noticed the fresh kill pile was getting low and she decided she would go hunting.
As she padded out of the Camp she heard a voice call her name.
"Maplestar!"
It was Thornscar.
He chased after Maplestar and when he caught up he placed his tail on Maplestar's shoulder.
The action reminded Maplestar of her father Oakstar, he had placed his tail on her shoulder often.
"You going hunting?" Thornscar asked.
"Yes," Maplestar mewed, her mind still occupied by memories.
Thornscar nodded, "may I come with you?" He pressed on.
"I would love it if you could but I need you to stay here," Maplestar mewed, "unless you've already sent out patrols."
Thornscar nodded.
Maplestar laughed, she knew that Thornscar was always prompt to send out patrols. He was always a worthy deputy and would be a worthy leader after her.
The two cats padded out of the camp and into the forest.
"Where should we hunt?" Thornscar mewed.
"Maybe by the River?" Maplestar mewed half jokingly.
"No thanks," Thornscar laughed, "I'd rather not get into a border skirmish right now."
Maplestar laughed, "maybe by the Sky Oak?" She suggested.
Thornscar nodded so they padded to the Sky Oak.
"So um," Thornscar mewed awkwardly, "H- how many lives do you have left?"
Maplestar laughed, "are you saying you're not ready to me leader?"
She watched Thornscar's eyes widen with fear.
"I can always choose a new deputy," Maplestar said pretending to be serious.
"N- n- No!" Thornscar stuttered fearfully.
"I was just kidding!" She mewed and laughed, "I still have all nine lives."
Thornscar sighed happily, "good."
Maplestar started to go faster.
"H- hey," Thornscar mewed. He was obviously surprised by her sudden change of speed.
Maplestar began to run, fur blowing in the wind, laughter on her tongue.
She could hear Thornscar running behind her, picking up speed quickly.
Maplestar closed her eyes for a moment and suddenly she ran into something warm.
"Thornscar why did you stand in front of me?" She laughed.
"Th- that's not m- me Maplestar," Thornscar stuttered.
Maplestar stepped back and adjusted her eyes, "Oh. My. Starclan." She mewed.
It was a dog. It was standing right there, staring at her, growling.
"RUN!" Maplestar ordered.
She turned around and sprinted away, Thornscar right beside her.
The two cats ran all the way back to camp. Maplestar had actually stepped right on a mouse on the way.
"What's going on?" Maplestar heard a cat mew.
"Dog! Behind us! Get ready here it comes!" Maplestar yelled.
The dog burst through the camp entrance, drool dripping everywhere.
"Everyone get ready for a fight!" Maplestar yowled.
Several cats went to guard the nursery and elders den while everyone else began to circle the dog with Maplestar and Thornscar.
"Attack!" Thornscar ordered.
Cats began jumping at the dog, slashing its muzzle, biting its tail.
Maplestar targeted one of the dogs massive paws and crouched, getting ready to spring.
Thornscar launched himself at the dogs side at the exact moment Maplestar jumped and her teeth dug into the dogs leg.
She began clawing the dogs leg as she held onto it.
Maplestar watched Lionmane and his apprentice Shadpaw launch towards the dog at high speed.
When Maplestar let go of the dogs leg she saw blood running down its gray leg.
"Keep it away from the nursery and Elders den!" Maplestar yowled as the dog shook the cats off and started to go towards the nursery.
Lionmane jumped back onto the dogs back as Shadepaw began to tug the beasts tail.
Maplestar planned her next move.
The other front leg she decided.
She jumped and latched onto the dogs other front leg, hearing the dog yelp from all of the attacks.
Suddenly the dog stumbled over and Thornscar slashed its belly.
"Let it run!" Lionmane mewed after getting out from under the dog, "its twolegs won't be happy if we kill it."
"What do we care about twolegs!?" Thornscar mewed.
"What if the dog has a family!" Shadepaw yelled.
"Fine," Thornscar grumbled. He stopped hitting the dog so it could get up.
The dog struggled to it's feet and began to stumble out of the camp.
"Stay away dog!" Thornscar yelled.
"We never want to see you here again!" Maplestar yelled.
Maplestar realized she had a long scratch along her side. It didn't seem to be very deep.
The scratch must have been from when the dog stumbled over Maplestar thought.
"Let's fix the camp entrance Shadepaw," Lionmane suggested.
Shadepaw nodded and the two of them began to fix the entrance, weaving sticks and branches in and out of the remaining bit.
