Writing prompt: write about a day that changed everything.

They said that the day you'd see colour was the day you had found your soulmate. Until then, the world was black and white. Creamy grey concrete lined the streets as stone walls framed the sky, a washy monotonous off-white. Brick patterns zig-zagged across the sidewalk as my well-worn converse tapped in rhythm to my stride.

Headphones on, vibing to Royal Deluxe's latest song, I was too engrossed in the catchy bop that I didn't notice her until I nearly stomped on her cat.

"Oh sh-!" I stumbled backwards, narrowly missing the killer claws and razor-sharp fangs.

The cat arched its back, spitting and hissing, striking blue eyes blazing as its white fur spiked up like a porcupine.

"Alpine!" The girl snapped. Grumbling, the cat backed away and slunk behind her, tail whisking from side to side.

"Oh my God- I'm so sorry!" I put my hands out in front of me. In the shock, I had dropped my phone and my headphones were half in, half out. The girl had also dropped her phone and when we both reached down to pick up our phones, I noticed her screen had cracked.

"Don't worry about it, I was too busy looking at my phone," she giggled, her hand over her mouth. "You okay?"

"Yeah." My eyes darted between her and Alpine's glare. I dusted off my jeans and pulled my headphones down.

"I'm so sorry A-Alpine," I smiled meekly, though the cat continued to frown, ears flat against its snowy white head.

"He'll get over it, won't you?" She gently picked Alpine up and the cat curled up to her in her arms. "To be fair, you nearly stepped on him." She locked her gaze with mine.

"Yea, uh I was too caught up in this song I was listening too - my bad." I looked down at my feet and awkwardly scratched my neck.

"Ooh, what song?"

"'No Limits' by Royal Deluxe."

"Oh my God, that is a bop! Do you like OneRepublic?" Her eyes shone.

"Yes! Do you like Bastille?" I grinned.

"Yes!" She beamed. "What's your name? I'm Natasha by the way."

"Jamie," I offered her my hand and she shook it firmly. "Sorry we got off on the wrong foot- no pun intended!"

"Ha ha, no need to apologise," Natasha smiled.

Subconsciously, I began to stare at her shoulder-length hair, it looked so fine and so soft, I was tempted to reach out and touch it but I resisted the urge. I also noticed that the tone seemed different. Warmer and somehow, brighter.

Suddenly, Natasha cleared her throat. "Sorry, um, I gotta go and walk home. It's nearly lunch time."

"Oh yeah!" I glanced at my phone, "me too."

"Well, I guess I'll see you around then."

"Yeah, take care."

"And you."

Just as she turned around to go, a ray of sun from a reflection off a window bounced off her hair and I wondered if I was seeing red.
