Old Acquaintance
After we dropped Jeremy off at the alley where we met him, and after he repeatedly reassured Macey that he was going to be okay, we looked at the clock and realized it was still only 4. After a quick discussion, we decided to continue our plan of heading to the library, even if only for an hour or so; Macey still wanted to check out some books and I still wanted to avoid Carmen.
When we finally arrived at the library, we went our separate ways; she went to the Horror section while I went to the Young Adult section. Yeah, I know, I'm 26 and looking at books for teenagers, but honestly, I was more glancing than getting invested. Although I have been a bit curious about some of these, hearing so many good things about them...
Eventually, we met back up at a reading area towards the back.
"Find anything?" I asked quietly, as to not disturb the readers.
She nodded and held out a book. Stephen King's "IT". The thickness of the book made my jaw drop.
"It's one of those books I've been wanting to read for a while," she explained.
"Can you even finish that before we head back?" I asked.
"Oh, God no, but I'm getting more of a preview to see if it's worth checking out back home."
"Gotcha."
"What about you?"
I sheepishly held my selection out in front of me.
"Hunger Games!" she replied with a twinkle in her eye. "Good pick!"
"I mean, I've heard lots of good about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot."
"No issue with that."
Before we could continue our conversation, my phone vibrated. I pulled it out. Unknown number.
"Excuse me," I told my sister as I placed my book down and quickly walked to the library entrance.
Ordinarily, she'd seem confused and pissed at this sudden event, but after everything she's learned about my mysterious phone calls, she just gave a small smile and nod. I exited the library and answered the phone.
"Hello?" I asked the phone.
"How are you enjoying your trip back home, Mr. Schmidt?"
"Listen, I don't know who the hell you are or what the hell you want, but-"
"Jeremy seemed to enjoy his lunch."
I just stared blankly at nothing, trying to fully comprehend that comment.
"How did you...?"
"You're certainly a lot smarter than you seem," the stranger continued, "but you're certainly not the biggest genius there is. If you're going to try and be the hero to save your little friend, you're going to need to find her, aren't you?"
"Where the hell is she?? How do you even have her??"
I made sure to look around before saying that; if anyone overheard, it would only cause issues.
"Don't worry, all will be explained soon. For now, though, I'd recommend making sure you haven't overlooked anything. If only there were a man or two who knew every last thing about Freddy Fazbear's Pizza..."
Before I could even reply, the voice hung up.
Frankly, I was just confused about the whole Jamie situation to be pissed. Seriously, how in the hell does this person have Jamie's spirit? And why are they doing this to me? But more importantly, that last comment they made...
'A man or two who knew every last thing about Freddy Fazbear's Pizza...'
And that's when it hit me. I took my phone away from my ear and quickly went through my contacts. Hopefully his number hasn't changed...
Ah! There it is! I tapped on the 'call' button and waited. I could hear the phone dialling, so there's a good sign...
"Hello?" the familiar voice finally replied.
"Chuck, is that you?" I replied.
"Yes...? Who is this?"
"It's me, Mike. Mike Schmidt?"
There was a brief pause before I heard a gasp of realization.
"Schmidt! Yeah, I remember you! How've you been?"
"I'm doing well, thanks. Listen, I kinda need a favor."
"What kind of favor?"
"Well, it's not exactly something I'm comfortable asking over the phone... are you in Scottsdale? Can we meet up somewhere if you're not busy?"
"Uh... sure, I suppose. Where are you at right now?"
"I'm at the library."
"Well, I'm not too far from there, so I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Okay. Thanks, Chuck!"
"No problem, I suppose."
I hung up and went back inside. Macey was at a table, reading her book. She glanced up when she saw me.
"Everything okay?" she asked.
I quickly but quietly explained the phone call and how Chuck was on his way over.
"This is getting too bizarre..." she murmured. "What does this person want? Who are they?"
"No clue," I replied. "It's a deep, distorted voice, so I can't tell if they're a man or woman."
"Well, whoever it is, they seem to really have it out for you."
"I guess...but what's their end goal? Why are they sending me on this wild goose chase to save Jamie?"
"I suppose there's only one way to find out, isn't there?"
"Yeah, I suppose..."
We didn't have to wait too much longer for a familiar golden-haired man to enter the library. I was too used to seeing him in more business-casual attire, so the gray jacket, white T-shirt, and blue jeans really threw me off a bit, but it was definitely him. I could see him scoping the place to find us. When he made eye contact with me, I gave a small wave, which prompted him to come over.
"Hey, Chuck," I told him. "You remember my sister, Macey, right?"
"Of course," Chuck replied with a smile.
"It's nice to see you again, Mr. Cameron," Macey replied with a small grin.
"Please, 'Chuck' is fine," he reassured, to which Macey nodded.
"I'm sorry if I was bothering you or anything," I continued, "but I need your help."
"Well, you did help us out with Fazbear Fright, so I suppose it wouldn't hurt to at least listen to what you need help with."
"Alright, well..."
I looked around me. There weren't that many people around, and they were probably too invested in their books to listen to us, anyway.
"...it's about Freddy Fazbear's Pizza."
Chuck gave a small smile of annoyance and shook his head.
"I kinda figured that's why you brought me here," he told me. "Why else would you just call me out of the blue?"
"I know you probably want nothing more to do with it, but we have a reason to believe that the fires in town may have a connection to Freddy's, and since you and your friends did a lot of research on the franchise..."
"Look, I'll be frank," Chuck interrupted. He really seemed pissed. "After my business burnt down before it even started, I wasn't exactly in the mood to continue my fascination with the Fazbear franchise. All of that time and money that went into it? Wasted. And worst of all..."
He paused, took a deep breath, and continued, "...and worst of all, my best friend died because of that dumbass prank we pulled."
"But didn't you say he forgave you?" I replied. "You know, on the phone?"
"That doesn't change the fact that he's fucking DEAD, Schmidt!"
A few people nearby looked up from their books to look at Chuck, who noticed the stares and quieted his voice.
"My point is that after the attraction burned down, I pretty much got rid of anything I had that was related to Fazbear Entertainment. I only even remotely care about or remember it when we visit the attraction on the anniversary of Eric's death, and after the shit we went through the last time we were there, even that's not a concern to me anymore! I just want to forget about that place and all the damage it's caused."
"Surely you must remember a few things from your research, at least!"
"I'm done here."
Chuck stood up and put on his jacket.
"I'm not about to be dragged back into this shit," he added as he zipped up.
"Chuck, please!" Macey begged. "We just need your help to research a location. That's all we need. After that, you're free to go!"
"Thanks, but no thanks."
"Chuck, please..."
"It was a pleasure to see you both again. Good day and good luck."
With that, he exited the library. Neither of us tried to stop him, mostly because we knew there was no convincing him.
"Man..." Macey sighed. "He's more dickish than I remember."
"Well, I see where he's coming from," I replied. "I mean, even the idea of Jamie being in danger wasn't enough for me to want to get involved in Freddy's again."
"I guess, but what about the other dude who was involved? Guy, was that his name? Maybe we can ask him."
"I don't have his number or any way of contacting him."
"Not even a Facebook profile or something?"
"Not even."
"So I guess the Fazbear Fright guys are a dead end?"
"I guess so..."
We both sat there, defeated. With nothing else to say, we picked up our books and read. If I'm ever going to find Jamie, I'm going to need help from someone who is both knowledgeable about Fazbear Entertainment and willing to help. But where am I going to find someone like that?
