Connected.(Mike x Reader)
In this world we live in.
Everyone is connected with a red string of fate.
The person who is going to be on each side of this string is either your soulmate.
Or your enemy.
Her eyes wondered around the park, gazing at the people who were passing by.
She slightly tapped her shoe against the ground, almost creating a sound to distract herself from the things that were going on in front of her.
Two little kids were playing around by the playground, having a red string connecting them from their pinkie fingers.
A couple passed by them, holding each other in their embrace as the string was on them too.
And just right next to her, there was an elderly couple, sitting on a bench and gazing at the park.
Disgusting.
She rolled her eyes, leaning against the bench and checking the time.
They were going too overboard with the whole, soulmate thing.
Why are people too invested into finding each other's halves?
It is merely pointless.
Life has so much more to offer.
No,she wasn't jealous.
She was actually relieved that she didn't have to worry about those things, since she didn't have a red string around her pinkie finger.
She did her best to avoid people like them, since knowing from experience they are talking only about this and nothing else.
But (Y/N) wasn't alone in this phenomenon.
There were quite a few people that didn't have the string either.
Suddenly, footsteps were coming down the trail of the park path and inching closer to her.
"(Y/N)!"
She snapped out of her thoughts, looking over to the female who was walking towards her with a smile.
She stopped, resting her hands on her knees panting softly.
"Sorry!I am never late but I had some errands to do."
(Y/N) shook her head, ruffling her friend's light brown hair.
"Chill,I didn't wait much."
Kate smiled, straightening her posture as the other girl stood up.
Taking their usual route,as almost everyday.
From the park towards the bridge,so they could look down at the river with the fishes were sometimes jumping up and down.
"This is getting so annoying."
She huffed, rolling her eyes at the connected red strings that were passing by them.
Her friend followed her gaze, slightly sighing as she patted her shoulder.
"Ignore them (Y/N).They are making the situation so out of hand that really ends up irritating. But don't look at them,we don't need that string to live our lives."
She gave her a sweet smile, wrapping her pinkie around hers and lifting up,as if to remind her that she wasn't alone.
(Y/N) smiled, stepping on the bridge as many people were looking down at the river.
"Many people today."
"I hate it."
She nodded, and they stopped at their usual spot.
They looked down at the water,as some fishes were splashing out of the water, making them chuckle.
(Y/N) exhaled with a smile, feeling the breeze along her skin as she looked up at the sky, being partly decorated with white fluffy clouds.
Her friend next to her smiled, gazing at her features with a small blush.
She nervously rubbed her wrist, swallowing hard.
"Can I admit to you something,(Y/N)?"
She blinked, focusing her gaze back to her.
"Sure,go ahead."
Her cheeks were rosy, lowering her head as she looked at herself in the river water.
"If I did have the red string,I would want to be connected with you."
Her cheeks got redder, making her friend smile.
"Aw,you know I would love to be connected with my best friend than any random girl or boy."
She slightly gripped her wrist.
"I didn't mean it in a friendly way."
Her heart was racing, unable to lift up her head.
(Y/N) looked at her almost puzzled, gripping into the railing.
At this right place.
The right time.
This happened.
Bells.
Ringing bells were heard as if they were right next to her ear.
She groaned, holding her head as the sunlight did a small change jump, making her eyes dizzy.
"Do you hear that?God,my head."
Her friend was confused,as she couldn't hear nor see anything different.
She turned around, still holding her head as she suddenly jerked her body forward, bumping into someone.
"Hey!Watch it!"
The ringing bells stopped,as she could finally see clearly around her.
But when the blurriness went away, her eyes met with a pair of blue ones.
The guy was taken aback,as his eyes grew slightly from her sight.
Was it her?
She cleared her throat, taking a step back as she nervously laughed.
"I am sorry, got dizzy for a second and couldn't see where I was going."
She gently smiled, about to turn back to her friend but her wrist felt being trapped around his large hand.
"Hold up."
She looked back at him, only to see his hand being lifted up so the red string of fate would be around his pinkie.
She raised an eyebrow.
"Yes,and?" She was confused, but took time to examine his features.
He was wearing a black hoodie, and a dark blue beanie over his, assuming, bald head.
His eyebrows frowned,as his blue eyes were piercing her existence.
"I think you got the wrong person,I don't have that annoying string."
He raised an eyebrow, lifting up her hand.
Her (colour) eyes went wide.
What.
The.
Fuck.
No.
She snatched her hand away from his, looking at the red string around her pinkie finger as she looked at him with a frowned stare.
"What did you do!"
"What the fuck,don't blame me!"
"I never had this and suddenly I do now?You did something!"
He shook his head, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"God,you know nothing about this, don't you."
"I don't care about it!I never wanted this."
"Well, now you have it.But now the question is."He inched closer, sizing her with his eyes."Are you actually my soulmate or my enemy?"
She gasped at his stare, feeling her back hitting the railing.
"Mike!There you are!"
A cracking voice came from the distance,as a shorter male gripped at his friend's sleeve, pulling him back.
"Don't go running away like that, you scared me!"
His cheeks became rosy,as he hid his eyes behind his brown hair.
"I am sorry just."He stopped for a bit, gazing towards the girl."Something pulled me here."
The male gasped, whispering something to him as his cheeks got a small hint of blush.
He huffed, turning his heel as he stuffed his hands in his pockets, walking away.
The male with the green turtleneck waved at (Y/N) and then followed his friend.
"What in the fuck just happened."
"I am not sure." Her friend stood there, almost not sure what to utter next.
~~
They were located in the library, trying to find the origins of this turn of events.
"Every book says that you will get the string of fate from the moment you are born. And as you get older,it gets stronger."
She looked over to (Y/N),who was frantically reading through every book.
"It says nothing about getting that damn string now!If you don't have it,you don't have it!Period!"
The librarian walked around the corner, making a shushing sound, earning a glare from (Y/N) and then she walked away.
"Fuck this shit!"She whispered yelled, sighing deeply as she sat down on the floor, looking at all the open books.
Kate flipped through pages, trying to find something to calm the girl down.
It was silent, with the sound of flipping pages only audible in their corner.
Her eyes shifted towards the string that was now decorating her pinkie, huffing softly.
She traced gently the finger around it,feeling it soft, but so light as if it was a cloud.
She grabbed the red string, trying to push it off her finger.
"Get off me you useless piece of-!"
"I found something!"
Her attention immediately shifted to her,but she continued trying to get it off.
"Last chapter;The late comers."
She grabbed the book from her hands, reading it through the page.
"You were born without it.
But don't worry about it.
As you are blooming late,
And the string of fate will wrap around it.
Sooner or later, you will find it.
Do not worry.
Everyone has a half who cares about it."
Her fingers gripped the book, inhaling and exhaling like a raging bull as she threw the book across the other shelves.
"This is bullshit!Bullshit!"
The librarian peeked the corner and shushed her again, but the moment she met eyes with her she quickly backed away.
She was angry.
Furious.
Late bloomer my ass.
"You can't change it that simply, ugh, the universe is playing with my patience and limits!"
Kate stayed silent, grabbing the book again and going back to the last chapter.
"It says that late bloomers were common in the first generations,as a lot of people's halves weren't born yet or they were really far away, almost impossible to reach. But sometimes the heart wants what it wants and it will guide itself towards the person your string ends up to."
(Y/N) huffed,shaking her head.
"Wow,I can't believe you found someone, even if it means late.I guess better now that never, right?"
She looked over to her friend, slightly blinking.
"It is like that fairy tale they were telling us in kindergarten.Different shapes, squares, circles, triangles, are being split in half, and they are roaming around trying to find the right other half. The half circle tries with the other half of a triangle, but it doesn't work out,so they leave each other to find their true other halves."
She rolled her eyes, remembering the story and addressing it all the time as stupid.
"I am so happy for you!" She smiled, closing the book and setting it aside.
"Then why are you crying?"
She stopped, her hand reached her cheek to feel the tears that were staining her cheeks.
She laughed,wiping them away.
"God,i got so emotional for you.I am such a mess."She laughed again, but that made her question if the smile was real.
"He is not my other half,he is my enemy."She stood up,picking up all the books and setting them into place."This string shows nothing to me but my true enemy.I felt nothing when I saw him.He is an enemy to me."
Kate stood up silently, helping her to get the books back in place.
(Y/N) rubbed her forehead, exiting the library along with her friend.
"What will you do now?You can't escape fate,it will keep pulling you together everytime."
"You really believe that bullshit Kate?It is not like i will turn this corner and he will be there."
She turned the corner, bumping into someone with a huff.
Suddenly, her ears heard a familiar bell sound, making her look over to the person she came across to.
"Oh come on!"
"You again."
The male with the blue eyes from before mumbled, now, having some of his friends along his side.
"This is your other half Mike?" A guy with ginger hair and round glasses asked, looking over to the girl with a smile.
Mike.
"I am actually his enemy, not his other half."
"How do you know that?" Mike questioned, crossing his arms as his brows frowned.
She glared at him, placing her hands on her hips.
"I just can feel it."
Then,a tall figure stood between them, pushing them slightly back so they won't go at each other.
"Alright people, let's calm down."The taller male with chocolate brown eyes smiled, looking over to the girl."Mike, why don't you properly introduce yourself to her?I bet you don't even know her name."
He rolled his eyes, extending his hand.
"Mike Schmidt."
She looked at his hand, and then back at him.
She grabbed it,shaking it a bit firmly.
"(Y/N) (L/N)."
The familiar bell sounded again.
"You are hearing that as well?"
His words got her off guard, pulling her hand away.
"What?"
"The ringing bells. That means your other half is there."
"You are not my other half!"
"Okay." The tall man's voice trailed off, getting in between them again.
He nervously laughed,clearing his throat.
"Let's shift the conversation!" He extended his hand."The name is Scott."
She slightly smiled, shaking his hand as the others approached.
"I am Fritz!" The ginger head said with a smile, making his freckled cheeks puffy.
"Jeremy." The male who was before with Mike mumbled, almost hiding himself in the green turtle neck and his brown hair covered his eyes.
She awed at his cuteness, but suddenly her hand felt another large one, looking over to see a dark complexion with a pair of almost white eyes.
"And i,am Vincent." He softly smirked, placing a kiss on the back of her hand.
"Get off her,you fuckgrape." Mike pushed him away, yanking his hand away from hers.
"Already protective of your soulmate I see." Vincent chuckled, running his fingers through his hair and fixing his lower ponytail.
The angry male's cheeks slightly turned red,but brushed it away as he looked over to her.
She noticed him gazing back, noticing his eyes were focusing on her friend.
She turned back, seeing Kate was standing a few feet away, not wanting to interrupt as her cheeks were rosy.
"Oh,this is my friend Kate. She is a bit shy at first but she is a nice girl."She gently grabbed her arm, guiding her next to her side."Everyone, this is Kate.Kate, these are the guys, you heard their names."
She shyly waved at them, having a small smile along her lips.
Her cheeks suddenly got extremely red, inhaling sharply as she turned around.
"I am going."
Her voice cracked, but (Y/N) held her wrist.
"Wait,what happened?"
"I don't feel so well."
She raised an eyebrow, feeling her intense pulse on her wrist as she yanked her hand away.
"It was nice meeting you all!See you around!"
And with that, she turned her heel and started running away.
(Y/N) was left standing there confused, but a hand on her shoulder made her turn around.
His familiar blue eyes made her take a step back.
"We are going to have a few beers.Do you want to tug along?"
Her (colour) eyes shifted towards them, seeing only smiling faces, and a smirk from Vincent.
Her eyes stopped on Mike, looking into his eyes as the string around her pinkie tightened, and her heart slightly fluttered.
Why is my heart acting like that?
Stop.
"Sure,I guess."
"Cool,let's go."
He wrapped an arm around her, earning a deadly glare.
"What are you doing?!"
"Holding you close?"
"Get off!"
She huffed, trying to push his unamused but also irritated face away.
"Fucking Christ woman!"
The guys on the back laughed, and maybe whispering to each other how they were actually the perfect match.
~~
Late at night.
When people tend to be the most vulnerable.
You let yourself drown in actions you never believed you would do.
A loud banging on the door echoed in the whole apartment, making Kate to get off the bed and towards the door.
"I am coming,i am coming!God." She huffed, unlocking the door and opening it.
She was taken aback, seeing her friend panting heavily and with a blush along her cheeks.
"(Y/N)?"
"Kate!Make it stop!"
She blinked confused, but the girl walked inside and she closed the door.
"This thing!" She pointed at her pinkie finger."It is making me feel things!Make it stop!"
"What do you mean stop,do i look like a higher force of entity to you?"
"I don't care!Please do something."
Her eyes saddened, seeing her friend fall on the floor, cupping her face with her hands.
Frustrated tears escaped her eyes, and she got on the floor, sitting next to her.
"Can you tell me what happened?" She wrapped an arm around her, holding her close.
She leaned against her, taking a deep breath.
"We hanged out,and had some beers. We were just having a good time altogether. But without knowing it,it was only me and him in the room, laughing and just enjoying the time. But the more i got to know him the more my chest hurt.I really wanted to grab something sharp and just stab myself to stop this nonsense. But things got worse as we almost kissed!"
She exhaled, ruffling her hair as Kate rubbed her shoulders.
"How he was feeling about that?"
"I don't know!We both leaned in but when I realised what was happening and I got my beer bottle against his lips and left!Came running to your place. And I never run."
"So it is very important." She sighed, leaning against the wall.
"I don't want this.I don't want to be tied to someone. We were both drinking so it means nothing!"
"Do you know how he feels?Maybe in that moment,he really saw something in you.And maybe you too."
Her cheeks darkened, gazing away almost hiding her face.
"(Y/N)?Be honest, not with me,but with yourself." She turned her head slightly, looking into her eyes."Did you feel something?"
Her heartbeat quickened, looking into her eyes but then gazed away, biting her lip.
"Maybe."
Her friend hummed.
"But." She frowned."If,and I say,if,I do feel something,I don't want to force things because of this."
She pointed at her pinkie finger.
"You are right. There is no need to pressure things if they aren't meant to be.But give it time, and if you still feel not up to that whole fate shit, you can always stay friends with him.No one should push you to get into things you don't like. And not everything has to end like all romantic and such."
She smiled, feeling a bit relieved hearing those words from her friend as she wrapped her arms around her.
"Thank you so much for being here.Even after getting this string."
"True friends stay no matter the changes.I am nothing but happy for you!"
Kate pulled away, cupping her cheeks and placing a kiss on her forehead.
(Y/N) smiled, almost tearing up as she cupped her hands.
"You know,I get that weird feeling when i am away from him.Like,we are connected and I can feel what he feels."
Her friend blinked surprised.
"Really?I have never heard that before."
"He said that after meeting at the bridge,he was feeling extra angry and that was because of me."
She hummed,tapping her chin.
"You think if you cry he will too?"
She chuckled,pulling out her phone.
"Let's test it."
She looked over to her lit up phone, raising an eyebrow.
"Did you seriously saved his number as 'My enemy'?"
"Hey,he is still remaining my enemy."
She chuckled, shaking her head at her words, but she couldn't help but smile.
Feeling connected with someone,to the point you can feel their emotions?
That's something rare.
That's something that maybe, only the ones who are truly connected spiritually can feel.
But like everything else.
Don't pressure things to come together.
Maybe not everything is connected after all.
