To the head cuarters
Zayn's P.O.V
The Dauntless around me start to run just as we get outside the building. I run alongside them and discover soon that I can keep up with them. Good I won't slender after them. A girl and a boy from Candor runs past me as we rounder a corner close to my school and take of down a street towards the train station. I turn my head backwards and see that I'm among the fastest transfers. Many of them run in the end of the line. I discover another orange dressed person behind me and feel a little happier as I recognize Niall's blonde hair.
"Niall!" I shout as I slow down my pace a little. The Dauntless I ran with quickly sprinter past me and not long after Niall catches up with me.
"Zain" he laughs under his breath. "Nice isn't it" he shouts over the sound of running feet. The wind makes his hair blow fanatic and he just looks so happy. Happier, freer than in Amity. Unexpected.
"Yeah!" I shout. Niall laughs loudly as he starts to run faster.
"Come on! We have to keep up, don't want to be in the back, do we?" I shake my head and run faster too.
"Hah!" I shout as I run past Niall.
Suddenly the line of running people stop and I look on impressed, as the Dauntless starts to climb up balms to reach the trains instead of using stairs or elevators. When I see a Abnegation dressed boy start to climb to, I run to the closest balm and put my hands on both sides of it. I try to heave myself up the first meter as the others do but fail.
"Use the stair thing" Niall shouts from beside me, and points. I notice bars on one of the balm's sides, that form some kind of stair and put my feet on de lowest bars. I start to climb and feel the ground move further and further away.
When I reach the top of the balm it's not hard to heave myself up onto a platform. I can see the train railway right in front of me and the Dauntless cheers when everyone has got up. I feel a smile spread on my face as I see their happy faces, and I almost fall off the platform as a train whistle is heard.
Around the corner a train drives closer to the platform and the Dauntless start to run as it quickly comes closer. When they run along side the trian they grab one of the poles beside the doors and jump into the train cars. Amazing, I think as I too start to run along. I grab a pole but my hand slippers and I let go, feeling myself stumble.
No one notices and I regain my balance quickly. Wind smashes my face making it hard to keep up with the train but I try to run a tad faster and I reach for the pole again, with more effort this time. I magnage to grab it without sliding and kick of from the ground, putting one foot on a little bar, before launching myself into the open car. The blowing wind stops trying to pull of from the train as I get into the car. I sit down no the floor close to the door and watch as more and more people jump onto the train.
Grey flashes before me and suddenly I feel something landing over me, making me fall.
"Sorry" I hear a voice before the boy that just landed at me gets of me and gives me his hand. I take it and get up to see the Abnegation boy sit down beside me. His brown hair is cut in the plain Abnegation hairstyle. He's wearing a grey t-shirt and on top of it a grey jacket . His eyes are brown and a smile is placed on his lips.
"Hi. My name's Liam" he says and puts his hand infront of him for me to shake. I take it and shake it.
"Zain" I say. The boy named Liam nods. I look out the open train door and discover to my surprise that Niall and some other transfers are still running beside the train.
"Niall!" I shout and stretch out my hand for him. He looks a little panicked before he grabs the closest pole and my hand.
I pull desperately, the power of the wind stopping me from getting Niall into the train.
"Liam" I call when the wind threatens to pull us out. With both of us pulling, Niall is soon inside the train and I help him to get away from the door, as Liam helps a Candor boy into the train. When they both are safe inside the train and the train has left the platform we all feel safe to relax.
"Niall this is-" I start but Niall has already presentated himself to Liam and the Candor boy, who's appearantly named Louis.
Louis is quite short, almost like Niall. He's dressed in black and white and seems to be a happy guy as he talks a little with Niall.
"Oh no" he suddenly whispers. "Wait. Has any of you seen a boy from Erudite? Brown curly hair, brown eyes quite tall. Listens to the name Harry" I can't stop myself from chuckling at his last words. They made it sound a little like he was searching for a dog. Liam looks a little bothered but to my relief Louis doesn't look angry at all.
"That sounded like he's a dog or something, right?" he smiles. I nod.
"Well. He's named Harry. Does that sound better?" Louis says.
"Yeah" Liam says. "And no we haven't seen him. I haven't anyway. Why?"
"He's a friend of mine" Louis says. "From school"
We all slowly nod, and I feel a little sad for both Louis and this Harry. I mean what if he didn't get onto the train
"We look after him when we get off the train" Liam assures.
Soon the train gets quite far away from the part of the city that I've been to, except for were the Amity live. My old faction. Where my family live. My family that I left... How selfish. How good. How crazy. How sad.
I sit with Niall, Liam and Louis and talk with them quietly. A little about why they transfered and where they think we're going. Suddenly shouts and screams are heard from other ends of the train making us all stand up, trying to understand what's going on.
"We're jumping off, of course!" A Dauntless dressed girl shouts to a blonde candor girl, before she launches herself out from the train car. Looking out of the car door I discover that the train is driving alongside high rooftops. More and more people jump off the train and land in the rubble on the roofs.
"We have to jump too" Louis says. I shake my head.
"I won't" Of course this is some kind of test, if we're brave enough to jump off a train in full speed. I can do it, but I don't want to 'cause it's just mental. Of course the train will stop on a station later and let us of if we don't jump, so why do it?
"If you don't you'll be factionless" a Dauntless boy says before jumping. What? Do the actually want us to jump? It's crazy!
"Together?" Niall asks. Liam and Louis nod, reluctantly I nod to.
"This is just...wrong" I mumble. You can't test bravery in this way. Jumping onto a train is one thing. But jumping off one in full speed onto a roof that's about two meters from the train is wrong. I feel a touch of anger inside me, and maybe that's the reason I'm jumping now. That I'm so mad at the idea, that I just do it.
We all hold each others hands and I almost pull Liam of the train as I jump without a clear warning.
The wind running past the train pushes us all a little to the side. I feel myself loosing my balance and fall. A few meters away I see Louis hit the ground, taking Niall with him. Apparently he had the time to kick of with power from the train, getting further in one jump. I feel the wind grabbing me and Liam's hand slipping in mine as he gets pulled onto the roof with Niall. I let go of Liam's hand as I see the side of the house coming closer, the roof further away. I'm not gonna make it onto the roof, but fall into the chasm between the railway and the house. I feel my body smash into the house but with my hands I mange to grab the edge of the roof. I hear the sound of something hitting rubble hard, and assume that's the sound of the others rolling onto the roof.
The edge of the roof feels at first easy to grab onto, but soon it gets slippery. My hands glides slowly closer and closer to the end and I tilt, my head to get a glimpse of how long I'll fall. To the ground it's about a hundred meters. I look back upwards at my hands but realize that I won't be able to hold on, I'm soon falling towards a certain death.
A knife of regret pierces me. I should have listen to my family, stayed with them. I wouldn't be here if I had chosen differently. I'm just going to release my grip, to make it quickly when I hear a shout.
"Here!" A second later a hand is reaching out for me, from the roof and starts to pull me up. Halfway up I can use my feet to clamber onto the roof.
When I, with quite many tries, manages to enter the roof I get met by two green eyes, looking worried at me. A boy in blue clothes lets go of my arm, which he just pulled me up by. His hair is brown and curly, quite messy, and a nervous smile is placed on his lips.
"Thanks" I mumble. "I'm Zayn"
"Harry" the boy says. Oh of course, he looks just like the boy Louis described. Shall I say that Louis is searching for him?
"Louis is-" I begin but the boy named Harry interrupts me and nods.
"Yeah I know" he says and gestures. I notice Louis, Niall and Liam standing behind him with worried looks on their faces.
"Hi, you managed without falling I see" I say, happy to see that they're just fine.
We walk together to the end of the roof where most of the others stand. As we walk past people I discover that I recognize quite many of the transfers.
Hazel Fitch from school stands with her brother Caven and talks with another Candor I can't remember seeing before.
I recognize Seamus Mill from Erudite and Clara Witzh from Abnegation. I know that her sister is quite friendly with Waliyha in school.
"Listen up!" a clear and commanding voice sounds over the rooftop. I turn towards the sound to see a woman standing on the edge of the roof. Her hair is dyed in green and she now commands everyone to gather around her.
Our little group, me, Niall, Liam, Louis and Harry, walks slowly closer to the woman, and the edge of the roof. Both curious and scared about what's the next crazy thing.
"My name's Rita!" The woman shouts. As I get a glance down at the ground I see a big black whole go right down through the asphalt. Oh no, if this means what I think.
"So... There's only one way in to the Dauntless head quarters. If you don't jump you don't get there" Rita gives each person in the crowd before her a piercing look, before she continues in a slight lower voice.
"And if you don't make it into the compound you don't belong in Dauntless" she smiles a smile that, I think makes all initiates here feel like they should have chosen another faction. I understand them, 'cause I'm on of them and this idea is just as crazy as the last, if not crazier.
"So..." Rita says, I kind of notice how she likes to linger at the word so.
"Who's first?" She asks. Of course none of the transfers of Dauntless-born says 'me'.
"I'll push someone random if no one steps forward. And mind, if I push I can't make sure you don't hit the ground..." Still everyone keeps quiet.
Most of all I want to open my mouth. Tell Rita and all the others that this is mad.
But I don't. Because that will make me look weak, and I'm sure that it's the same as not making the initiation. And can it be because I deep inside find this thrilling and exciting, the part of me that belongs in Dauntless loves this idea?
I'm drawn from my thoughts when I feel movement beside me. When I realize what's happening Liam is already at the roofedge.
"Yay stiff!" Someone shouts, using the terrible nickname for Abnegation people. Liam is braver than them anyway.
Liam stands at the roofedge for a while and balances on his tiptoes. Before he gives a quick glance behind him and bends his knees. Jumps.
"And now, when the stiff was brave enough to jump I assume that it won't be hard for you to follow him. Next" Rita says, when she takes her eyes from where Liam just disappeared, she scans the crowd again.
"I'll jump" a voice says and a brunette girl from Erudite steps out of the crowd. I watch her walk to the roof edge and look down at the ground for a while, just like Liam before she jumps. Her scream is heard all the way up to the roof.
"Next" is the only thing Rita says this time. Shall I? So it's done. Or do I want to jump. Feel the air run past me and let the Dauntless boy in me show? Before I let the more Erudite part of me take over I say.
"Me" Rita smiles and nods. "The scenes is yours" I feel my legs start to move and when I get to the edge I feel like I left the other me behind me. My wit is gone and the wolf inside me takes place. I can do this!
It's about 70 feet to the ground, maybe more, where the gaping whole screams at me to jump. It looks really tempting, really fun... I stand on the edge and look at the ground for a while. Then I do something I didn't think I could. I don't know if it's because I've gone insane, or because I'm filled with some crazy joy I can't explain but I turn around. So that my back faces the gap I'm just going to jump into. I bend my knees, don't know how I can do it when I've never even tried to practice it.
I kick off from the ground as hard as I can as I tilt my head and upper body backwards. Backflipping. Everything turns upside down as the power of my kick off from the ground makes me turn upside down.
Wind rushes past me as I start to fall. My head is still first and when I turn all my body a little to the right I manage to fall in the way I should. My feet first. I feel like a bird as I fall through the air, the black whole coming closer and closer. I feel a slight sting in my stomach that would have bothered me if I wasn't in that moment of pure happiness. Finally I've managed to break out of the Amity-cage. Just like a bird I fly free from my prison, towards freedom.
When it gets darker around me I realize that I've fallen into the whole, not hitting the ground, and just seconds after, I realize I've hit something. A net. It sinks under my weight and sends me up in the air again like a catapult.
As I land again the net doesn't kick me up in the air again, just swings slowly in all directions. It's a little like the feeling of being in a hammock and I can't say I don't enjoy it, after that freefall.
A movement in the net, when someone pulls it, makes me realize that maybe someone else is jumping soon, and maybe I should get off as quickly as possible. I quickly crawl of the net and finds myself stand eye to eye with a tall man, who looks very well trained. He stares at me for a moment. I meet his ice blue eyes and can't help but fell a little scared. I mean I'm sure he could break my legs with just one hand, 'cause he looks really strong.
"What's your name?" He says, his voice a lot more soft and kind than I thought.
"Ehm...Zain" I say. He frowns a little at me.
"Spelled?" He asks, apparently he thought it sounded quite weird.
"Z-a" I start, but stop to think. Now that I left my old me on that stupid roof, wouldn't it be quite nice with another change. That marks that I'm not my old me down here?
"y-n" I end my sentence. The man nods.
"Okay. I'm Simon. Welcome to Dauntless"
