Dick had grown use to the threats promised to sent to his family. To the ones sent to him before and after becoming an police officer. He's been kidnapped more than any of his other siblings, he was known at "boy hostage" across the world by now. He still gets more captured than his siblings even as an adult.
He'd prefer himself being targeted than any of his siblings, grandfather and his father. He'd rather be put in danger and treated roughly than ever see one of them hurt or worse. He was use to this life, grew up with it and knew how to keep himself alive long enough to be rescued. But he was also smart enough to know that someday, no matter how well behaved or how good he acted, he might still lose his life. He'd prefer if his life was the one unluckily taken than any of his other family members.
Something both his father and grandfather had scolded him over for thinking in such a way and still do think in such a way. Both grown to accept it but hate such a fact.
"He told me he was a merry man. He was such a merry man. But why did he hit me so.." Dick quietly sang under his breath as he held his youngest brother to his chest, lightly pacing the corridor as the fussy three year old was finally starting to doze.
Dick knew his father and the rest of his siblings had settled in their shared room within the watchtower. All use to this lifestyle a little better than the toddler who had arrived at the Wayne manor just a year ago. Damian was finally settling into the manor as his new home, let along finding it difficult to settle at the watchtower during the nights they had to spend there without much warning.
"He told me he'd love me so. But why has he laughed at me so.." Dick sang as he glanced down to the dozing toddler, knowing it was still too early to head back to the room and lay him down in his bed. He'd stir awake as soon as they reach a room, and why he didn't cry like most babies/toddlers did, he'd start throwing or using his deadly finger to poke others awake to suffer with him.
Dick danced towards the wall of windows that showed the whole of space outside the watchtower. Admiring the view before him and knowing it'd be a nice view for his youngest brother if he did open his eyes to check his surroundings before he completely fell asleep.
"He was my merry man. So very merry man. But the wrong type of merry that I had hoped for. Tell me it isn't so.." Dick carried to quietly sing to his baby, holding him close and tight.
His eyes glancing to a blur of a reflection further down, taking notice over a blurry figure coming around the bend further down the corridor.
"My merry man who wasn't my merry" Dick finished off, feeling Damian grow to be dead weight in his hold and knowing the young boy had long since learnt to trust him to sleep soundly in his arms and not fake it.
Dick smiled down at his baby brother, slowly walking down the corridor towards the bend and smiling as he watched someone else finally finish walking round the bend. His smile growing into a grin as he recognized the retired hero who mostly stood as a teacher/trainer for young heroes now.
"You have an army of heroes at your feet, just tell us a name and we'll deal with the man ourselves" Kon spoke in a light and joking tone, a smirk pulling on his lips as he knew no hero linked to the Justice League would ever allow any harm to come to their Boy Wonder, a boy most have watched grow up and helped to raise as well.
"It's an old song. I'm perfectly capable of fighting my own foes if needed" Dick softly replied with a sweet smile, his eyes menacing as he's able to beat up a few heroes if needed. Helped trained with some.
"I never said you couldn't. I merely wanted to deal with them first. Knew you'd leave nothing for the rest of us if you got there first" Kon calmly argued back his reasoning for wanting to know the man's name first. Understanding it was just some old song.
"Wouldn't want to risk having your dna at the crime scene" Dick teased back as he met the half kryptonite eyes, both looking at the other fondly.
"I know a guy in the department who might be able to give me a few tips over getting away with the perfect assault. Mostly how to beat someone up without getting thrown in prison for it" Kon playfully whispered as he pretended to glance around, making sure no one else was listening in.
"I think it's called being a hero" Dick shot back with a raised eyebrow.
Kon had a burst of laughter escape from his lips. It was low and a rumble but it was the best sound to Dick's ears. Only a rare few have ever been able to make the clone laugh, truly laugh before and carry on doing so afterwards.
Dick smiling before filling with panic as he quickly lowered his head and looked down to find Damian still sleeping peacefully. His scrawl still filling his expression even in his sleep, just like Bruce has. A breath of relief escaping both adults at neither accidently woke the three year old up.
"You both should return to your room. It's late and you need rest" Kon advised with a kind look, glancing down to the sleeping toddler and knowing the older was tired from staying up with him.
"Are you stayin-" Dick started to ask, not hiding how hopeful he was before losing said hope as he was cut off.
"I'll be back at the farm. But I'll be back before lunch. I've gained permission to train my students in the watchtower during your stay here. I think Superman's learnt that whenever you're involved, I'd be close by. During the good and the bad" Kon replied with a small frown, knowing the other had wanted him to stay around but he needed to pop home. He's never been comfortable in the watchtower since gaining his own home.
"I was your first save" Dick reminded him, a fond smile on his lips.
"You were. My first civilian hostage. My first person to meet since I was rescued. You were the first person to believe in me. To fight me. To give me a chance to train as a hero under the original leagues members. I still have no clue how you even sent my location out to the Justice League as a distress signal" Kon admitted softly, knowing that Dick was the reason he was still standing here now. Knew that Dick was his everything, even as the meaning changed to be more romantic as the years passed.
"I hacked the league" Dick smugly confessed, no shame over his criminal actions.
"You certainly did. I've never seen Mr Wayne so mad and so proud when you let it slip years later" Kon grinned back as he reminded the face of Bruce once he learnt the news.
"He didn't want me teaching my siblings bad habits" Dick sheepishly grinned back as he understood why his father was so mad. He feared Dick would teach his siblings to do the same thing.
"You'll only ever teach them how to be a good person. And how to survive this crazy world" Kon replied with a gentle look, knowing that Dick would only bring the best out of anyone he met.
"I'll see you around, Kon. Hopefully next time it'd be without a threat to the Wayne name. Maybe some cute café or petting and milking a cow together" Dick smiled back sweetly, hinting for an actual date instead of being rescued.
Dick walked back towards the Wayne's private dorm room, the room big enough to hold all the beds needed for the whole Wayne family when needed. Feeling Kon's eyes on his retreating back as he left. Knowing the other wouldn't be brave enough to ask him out for a date and knowing he won't be making the first move either.
Dick would have made the first move long ago if he thought they'd have a happy ending. But Kon wouldn't want to stand as an Wayne, he didn't like going near Gotham unless it was for rescuing an Wayne. Dick couldn't leave his family like Kon couldn't leave his gained farm, his true home.
By morning, the threat had been over and Dick left with his family before Kon had arrived. Unable to say goodbye to the hero but already guessing he was told by the heroes communication system. Knowing the clone would see the threat was dealt with and his hero side wasn't needed.
But Dick still scanned the mostly empty watchtower for the familiar black hair and blue eyes. Hoping to see him hurrying over to watch him go, a date screamed out before the zeta tube fully took his family back to Gotham.
Dick returned to his life in Gotham. Happily serving the city as an police officer and trying to do his best for the people and the city. Knowing that not everything is black and white but knowing he couldn't just turn a blind eye every time either.
He knew he'd be either loved or hated and accepted that fact. Doing good where he could and stopping as much bad around him as possible. He wasn't overly liked by all his fellow officers but that's due to Dick sniffing out enough evidence to get the dirty cops fired.
The job was never safe but when you've been a hostage to criminals most of your life, Dick found the job more safter than others. He'd at least be first name basics with his fellow cops when they come to rescue him and it'd be less odd that he was now first name basics with most criminals who kidnap him too.
At least his job understood that sometimes cops got kidnapped or used as hostages in the city and actually worked around it. Dick was less likely to get fired as a cop than any other job he'd go for. And he still refuses to work at Wayne Enterprise, he wasn't very good at business nor did he wanted to be treated as a victim due to all the threats daily aimed towards the Wayne's and their company.
"Are you going to arrest me, officer?" Jason asked as he fluttered his eyelashes towards his big brother, holding out his wrists to be cuffed as the clearly stolen bike was laid on the pavement beside him. Even though it was originally parked outside of a store right behind them by the owner.
"Why do you want to spend a night in holding?" Dick asked as he crossed his arms over his stomach, knowing the sixteen year old had clearly done something bad or that he regrets.
"Who says I want to be locked up?" Jason shot back, growing defensive and only proving he needs somewhere to hide for the night.
"You only skip school and purposely get caught stealing if you're hoping to be held in holding for the night. Meaning you've done something and you don't want to face the aftermath" Dick simply stated as he raised a questionable eyebrow towards his brother.
"I broke Damian's wooden sword" Jason confessed quietly, scared to say it out loud in case the toddler appears out of nowhere and tries to slaughter him there and then.
"The one we bought him when he first moved to the manor since he was too use to play with his mother's katana. That wooden sword?" Dick slowly and fearfully asked as Damian loves that sword. The toddler had arrived clinging to Talia's katana and they'd all taken it from him and safely hung it on his bedroom wall so he could still be close to it.
Dick ended up buying the wooden sword from a craft store after one of his shifts, knowing the boy used the katana as a comfort blanket and hoped it'd make due as a makeshift replacement until he was old enough to be careful around the katana. The wooden sword was painted a dark green and red and Damian had cherished it since he was given it.
"Yes" Jason grimaced, knowing how terrible he was and how awful this situation was.
"You need witness protection" Dick admitted, already accepting his brother's death by their baby brother's hands. Damian was young but he was brutal, clearly Talia's son since she was a she-devil herself.
"I do. Hence, arrest me" Jason mumbled backs, holding up his wrists to be cuffed, nodding for his brother to save him by arresting him.
"I can't be the one to do it. Damian would assume I've betrayed him by helping you" Dick huffed back, shaking his head and stepping back with his hands up in surrender.
"And what about betraying me?" Jason cried back.
"Not even Tim was dumb enough to break Damian's sword, even when mad at him. I'm not risking anymore beef with Talia than I already have. B's already took away my cereal a few times in the past when he's caught me at war with her" Dick ranted back as he started to pace, running a hand through his hair. Knowing not even Tim, who dislikes Damian as much as Damian hates Tim, wouldn't dare to touch Damian's precious wooden sword.
"Fine. What officer do you not like that I can punch just to get arrested by?" Jason sighed in defeat, prepared to punch a cop his brother disliked to get arrested by them instead.
"I'll take you to where he's patrolling this shift" Dick perked up, looking forward to watching the cop get hit hard by his little wing.
Dick never got to take Jason to punch the cop as they're both alerted by another threat warning on their phones. Being requested by their Dad and the justice league to reach the watch tower. Jason groaning as he knew he'd have nowhere to hide or run in the watchtower from his baby brother. Knowing he had a better chance with the kidnappers but Dick dragged him to the closest zeta tube before he could make a run for it.
Dick taking the bullets out of his gun and slipping them into the watch towers safe. Placing his badge inside as well and sending a text to Gordon that his family was under protection once again.
Heading back out towards the main area of the watchtower to gather with his family. Jason sulking as he knew death was upon him. Dick lifting an amused eyebrow towards his Dad who were struggling with all the other Wayne's.
"Who want to play cop?" Dick asked with a huge grin, knowing how to keep his siblings entertained as they stood scattered around in school uniforms.
Loud cheering followed before the group of siblings all huddled around Dick and waiting for him to pass something over to them all. Dick passed over his hat to Stephine first, watching her happily place it on and start posing with it on. Passing his radio to Cassandra who happily turns it on and changes the chancel to list to officers gossip.
Dick passing his empty gun to Tim to let the kid try to take it apart and than put it back together again like it was merely a puzzle. Dick slipping his torch off and passing it to Jason who smirks evilly before racing off to blind superheroes by catching them off guard and shining them in their eyes. As well as use the torch as a lightsaber when he finally grows bored from blinding heroes. Dick pulls out his portable baton and gives it to a sadden Damian, tears in the toddlers eyes. Dick took Damian into his arms before slipping out his handcuffs and placing them over to Duke who happily ran off to randomly cuff heroes.
Dick rolled his eyes and pulled out his keys, rattling them towards Bruce who lifted an unimpressed eyebrow before Dick just chuckled. Placing his keys back in his pocket before pulling out a lolly pop and shoving it at his Dad before walking away. Knowing his family would be distracted for an hour or two now.
Leaving Dick time to hit one of the computers within one of the smaller lounges. Googling wooden swords to replace Damian's broken one. Bouncing the toddler on his lap and showing him all the photos. Trying to get the upset and grumpy boy to pick out a new sword that he likes but nothing seemed to have caught his attention just yet.
"Baby bat, I know none of these will be perfect but I can't find a twin to your old one. You need to find some middle ground with me" Dick told his baby brother, knowing he wanted his sword but knew they won't be finding a perfect match either.
Damian only whined and dug his face back into Dick's stomach, leaving Dick defeated. He held his brother close before reaching for his phone and decided to pull out the big guns. Calling Superman, needing the meta's powers to help him find a sword that mostly matches Damian's old one. Superman not seeing it as an emergency but Dick telling him otherwise, knowing he was using certain benefits selfishly.
It taking three whole hours before Superman came back defeated. Mentioning that any swords still useable was owned by others that wouldn't sell. Damian falling silent and wiggling out of Dick's hold before running off somewhere.
"Know any wood carvers?" Dick asked the symbol of hope, knowing he'd be paying way more than the sword would be worth.
Clark fell silent, shaking his head before someone coming to his mind and he soon grinned. Writing down an address for the person, promising it would be worth the travelled distance.
Dick merely raising an eyebrow before shrugging and accepting the address given to him. Walking off to check on his siblings and check they haven't broken his equipment nor causing too much chaos in the watchtower.
Slowly collecting all his equipment back as he finds each and every one of his siblings. Slowly placing them back on himself before wiggling the lollypop stick out of his Dad's mouth as the man was chewing it instead of placing it in the bin.
"Can you babysit them for a second?" Dick asked as he was hoping to sneak out of the watchtower and head over to the address that Clark gave him.
"I think I can be left alone to raise my own kids, Dick. I did raise you" Bruce huffed back with an amused smile as he turned to his oldest.
"And I had kidnappers help me with my homework when I've been kidnapped in the past. I thinking questioning if you'll be able to handle every Wayne kid for an hour is allowed" Dick shot back with an raised eyebrow and wondering if his Dad really wanted to discuss how he was raised.
"Don't be any longer than an hour. I think Damian might hunt Jason down after that" Bruce mumbled back in defeat as he knew he couldn't stop his youngest from murdering his second oldest.
"I'll be back to stop a murder" Dick grinned back as he walked off.
Dick was surprised to find that a zeta tube was held at the address and just assumed the person was a hero or linked to the hero world. Stepping through the zeta tube and finding himself in an garage before heading out to spot a farm.
He looked around from where he stood before finally heading towards the front door. Knocking a playful knock, never having grown up, and waited patiently. Rocking on his feet as he waited and waited and waited.
Peeking in the window to check if anyone was home and noticing someone seeming to be stressing out on the inside. Glancing to the side before checking the door and finding it unlocked.
"Sorry Alfred" Dick apologized to his grandfather, knowing he'd disapproval over him entering a home without being welcomed. Even if Dick was sometimes jealous over the butler being the only one who was never kidnapped.
Dick entered, closing the door behind him before heading over to the stressing out person. Slowing down to a stop and standing with a grin as he came face to face with a startled Kon.
"Guess you owe me petting a cow and milking one now" Dick smiled back cheekily, holding his hands behind his back as he stepped closer to the other.
"Ma's farm has the cow" Kon mumbled back as he glanced to the side.
"Seems we miss out on another date" Dick sighs with a fake pout.
"Why are you here?" Kon blurted out, wondering how the other got his home address. He's told him over the farm but never took him here before.
"Clark gave me a wood carvers address, here. I need a copy of Damian's sword, Jason broke his" Dick explained with a small frown as he wondered if Kon would be willing to help.
"And he's still alive?" Kon asked in surprise, having thought the demon child would have killed the other by now.
"For now. B wants me back within the hour to stop a murder" Dick grinned back with a light shrug.
Kon just nodded before relaxing and soon enough the two were talking over getting another sword done. Dick reminding him over the colours and showing photos over where Damian was holding it. Kon getting a few of the photos sent to him so he'd have a reference to use once he words on the sword.
Soon the hour was almost up, Kon promising to have the sword done by tomorrow since he agreed it was an emergency unlike Clark. Dick smiled as Kon slowed their walking as he escorted him towards the zeta tube, agreeing to drop the sword off at the manor itself. Dick winning him over to stay for dinner.
"I'll see you tomorrow. No chickening out on family dinner" Dick smiled back as the zeta tube started warming up behind them.
"If I survived supervillains than I can hopefully deal with the Wayne's for five minutes" Kon grinned back, feeling certain he could rush eating the perfectly made meal by Alfred and escape before the Wayne's beat him down.
"No speed eating. That's cheating" Dick laughed back, playfully shoving at Kon.
"How about I speed eat tomorrow to survive your family and than take you out to Ma's farm for the rest of the evening. Have that date you keep hinting at?" Kon offered up, his cheeks rosy and his tone shy as he finally went for it.
"I'd love to pet a cow while you milk it" Dick grinned back, growing giggly as they finally gain that date.
