Batman was one of the greatest Heroes known.
He was the known leader to the Justice League.
One of the original trio.
But Batman was the worse father.
He might have his good days but those rare precious good memories can't outshine his failure as a parent.
The scars on their bodies, inside and out, were half of his own doing.
And others knew, they noticed the early signs but Batman was too great of a hero to step in and save those that had chosen a path of a hero in his choking shadows.
Being the oldest meant that their father knew the limit a child could take before it grew to be too serious.
It wasn't a learning curve he wanted linked to his name.
Batman was a dark knight to Gotham.
But he was the devil to those he were meant to love and raise with respect.
Wally was never silent over the signs.
He's known Rob's for a very long time and had survived an abusive family before.
Kidflash knew that no one would come save his best friend, not like his uncle and auntie did for him.
So, he grew to be a safe place for the original boy wonder, to be so loyal that he'd take a beating from batman to follow his soulmate to heaven.
"If you're going, I'm going!"
Was a promise, in life and death.
Wally wished is boyfriend would have left that cruel man.
Begged him to leave at an age where he couldn't even live alone.
But he never did and never would.
Someone had to protect the Robin's,
But more importantly, Dick had survived, because the first Robin held faith that Batman could be warmed by the bright light of hope and love.
A robin left buried in the deepest part of Nightwing, protected from the harsh truths over their reality.
It's why he didn't stop his boyfriend from stepping in as peace maker after Jason's death. Knowing he's failed a Robin and never planning to allow Batman to get away from taking a life due to the blood being on another's hands.
Dick kept the peace, acted the fool and smiled as he tried to make Batman into a better father for the birds and bats that followed after Jason.
The devil of the bat wasn't ever going to be allowed to rise anymore.
Otherwise Wally would let lose a demon that even god feared, a Nightwing that no longer smiled.
"Rob's, I think it's getting bad in there" Wally warned his husband as he came walking into the Wayne's gym, seeing his husband doing his pre-work out stretches.
"The batclan talk through sparing. Once the sparing grows to be a real fight, I'll step in. If I step in beforehand, I'll just be ruining the mood for any real talks between them" Dick calmly reminded his husband as he stays calm and relaxed. He'll step in as soon as someone steps over the line of sparring.
"I'd suggest that your whole family sees a therapist if I didn't fear that even the Wayne's did hold enough money to afford one that could handle all that trauma and crazy" Wally mumbled back with a shake of his head as he took a seat on the bench.
"Even if we did hold enough money for it.. I fear that they'd grow to be another Gotham vigilante" Dick commented with a grimace as he didn't need another villain added to Gotham.
"That would add up" Wally muttered back with an thoughtful expression, not wanting to help ruin some random civilian's life by letting them deal with the bats crazy.
The two stayed casually chatting over random topics as Dick carried through doing his gymnastics. Using the gymnastics and acrobat set up within the manor and being Dick's main reason for coming to the manor every Sunday to use it. As well as have lunch with his whole family, or at least those able to make it.
Keeping an ear towards the speaker connected to the batcave below the manor. Keeping an ear out for the moment that the sparing and family talks while sparing shifted into something else. Wally having kept his shoes on, ready to grab his husband and speed race down to the cave to send the peace maker in to deal with the bats.
Both of theirs heads snapping towards the speaker as soon as soft voices and light laughter suddenly grew to be an growl. Nothing said yet but Dick knew the growl, knew that the dark knight was stepping out and forgetting the father he was growing to be.
Wally was already carrying his husband down the batcave's stairs before he even had to be asked. Racing down and knowing that the peace maker was needed before words that couldn't be taken back were spoken and violence was used to put all bats and birds in their preferred places to the bat.
Dick played the peace maker as always. Smiling like an idiot and calming the air as he twirled around the cave to gain all the attention. Using himself as a distraction from the growing emotions that would break the younger bats and birds.
Promising them all a warm hot chocolate upstairs and leaving up the stairs with his husband's hand held tight in his. Giving them all a few minutes to shower and change and meet them in the kitchen once they're ready for the drink.
It gave them all a chance to cool down, to wash away whatever was building up and head upstairs in a calmer state. As well as a deadline, if they didn't arrive before Dick would normally start boiling the kettles, he'd know to check on them again.
That being peace maker had failed as soon as he left the room.
Dick and Wally talked among themselves as they grabbed everyone's favourite mugs and lined them up on the counter. Finding the good hot chocolate before adding three scoops to each mug. Adding sugar for those that liked a sweeter hot chocolate and getting the marshmallows ready for those that preferred them.
Sharing love sick looks as they've long accepted this was a part of their lives and would forever be until news hit that both Batman and Bruce Wayne laid dead. Even with Bruce improving as a better father, he still slips and falls to low to ever fully be left alone with the other bats and birds.
Just as they'd be proved right yet again by their adopted son.
"Baba. Dad. I wish to go home" Damian demanded as he stepped into the kitchen, looking defeated and worn.
"What happened Dami?" Dick quickly asked, rushing over to his son and pulling him into his arms. Trapping him into a hug that felt safe and protected.
"Father is being unloving again. To all of us" Damian voice was muffled from where his face was buried in Dick's stomach.
Within the blink of an eye, Wally had his arms wrapped around both his son and his husband. Ready to have his arms full of just their son as he looked his husband dead in the eyes.
"I'll take care of our son, go save your siblings" Wally ordered back, taking their son into his arms as soon as his husband released him.
"Ask Alfred to call Leslie and let her know to expect a brooding bat within the hour. Conscious or unconscious will depend on B" Dick yelled out over his shoulder as he started racing towards the study to enter the batcave's clock entrance.
Wally kept one arm tightly and protectively around his son as he reached for his phone with his other hand. Calling Leslie Thompkins personally and pre-warning her that Batman might be crawling to her clinics doors or be dropping off within the hour. Merely warning he stood as Batman and not a father, the older women understanding well enough after all these years of knowing the vigilante family.
"Will Baba be able to face Father by himself? He's not a sane man" Damian asked in a small voice, his eyes frighten over his baba's safety.
"Earth has one foe that none can win against. One that even the gods themselves fear. A Nightwing who loses his smile. Even Superman's been defeated by him once and Ra has even held nightmares from seeing such an sight from a distance" Wally proudly said as he looked down at his son, running a hand through his spiky hair and making it clear that Batman didn't hold a chance now.
"Will our home ever grow like this one?" Damian quietly asked, never wanting to be stuck living with a man like his father again after experience a happy, cherishing and supportive family.
"Never. You're baba and I would never allow our home to grow to be so dark and cold. I promise you that much, Damian" Wally promised his son as he kneeled before him, holding his cheeks in his hands and making it clear that he'd never allow their home to grow like the manor.
