Kon knew what it felt like to miss out on a happy childhood and the feel of a parents love. He wasn't raised as many of his fellow heroes may have been. He never had supporting or loving parents that cherished and drowned him with affection.
He was never tucked in bed with kisses to his face nor was he hugged whenever he woke up from a nightmare terrified. He was never praised or be told "I'm proud of you" by a parent.
It's why he knew he was going to step up as a better parent for his boyfriend's adopted-not adopted son. Their foster son, Damian.
Kon was going to be a parent the boy had wanted and needed, not the parents he was given. He knew Talia loved her boy in her own odd way but she wasn't always the best mother. And well, Bruce wasn't father of the year in the few months he was alive when Damian was suddenly placed in his care.
He knew Dick was doing his best. Being the mama-bird he had grown to be for most of his siblings. Knowing he wasn't perfect but treating Damian as a child, not an heir nor a soldier but an CHILD.
Damian was a boy, their son and Dick loved him as he should have been always loved.
Kon and Dick knew they couldn't just treat Damian as a child from straight of the bat. The boy has been raised an heir and a soldier, to always stand as a blood son. He needed to be slowly encouraged to act his age and accept the love, support and cherishment that came from parents that wanted him as a son, just their baby boy.
It was hard and long work but they slowly, so very slowly, make improvements.
Kon wasn't thrilling over moving into the Wayne's penthouse, he missed his and his boyfriend's tiny and crappy apartment that they called home. But he knew that if they wanted Damian to place in some effect to be a mere child, he had to put the effect into giving the boy a stable and better home.
All the sudden changes and slow but hard work had paid off.
It was after a random rough night of patrol in Gotham.
A few rogues had decided to try and push Batman's buttons, poor Dick having to live the double life even more as he fooled everyone into believing he was Bruce's Batman. Being someone he had tried so very hard to never be.
It was a long night and by the end, as everything had been settled and criminals arrested. Kon, who went as SB, giving the full Superboy title to his fellow clone Conner, a punk clone in his eyes. Kon had arrived on the rooftop where his family stood, Batman kneeled before an worn out and tried Robin who seemed ready to collapse on the spot if he'd lower his guard down enough for it to ever happen.
Kon, without thinking, had just scooped Robin into his arms and held him close to his chest. Praising him over his good work for the night and promising the ten year old he was safe to finally gain some well deserved rest.
Robin had actually fallen asleep with his head on Kon's shoulder, Batman taking photos and smiling warmly over his boyfriend and son making just a huge step in their relationship.
Since, Robin had allowed himself rest breaks by raising his arms, the universal sign from all children to be carried, and let himself be picked up and rest in his Baba's or Tati's hold. Not always napping, sometimes wide awake and simply resting in their hold as they carry on with life.
It was never done outside of Gotham, Batman wasn't ready for the league to meet a new Robin just yet. More so when not all the Justice League actual knew over the original Batman's death. A lot of heroes gossip and Dick wasn't willing to risk everyone passing on the news of Bruce's death. Known Villains would soon hear the gossip and Dick would be facing a lot more trouble as others decided they'd be able to rule now the bat had fallen.
Kon wasn't thrilled over keeping secrets but he also didn't want to witness Gotham burn to the ground, not when he had a family to protect who lived there full time now.
"Baba?" Damian spoke up through the content silence of the penthouse, appearing behind the sofa his baba had sat on, watching the news for their city.
"If it includes breaking the law, no" Kon simply replied as he knew what his son could be like sometimes and was skipping any long game that ended in breaking the law somehow.
"Tsk. I have learnt from my earlier mistakes in this family, Baba. Don't treat me like a fool. I understand auntie Kate or Uncle Roy are best to break the law with" Damian scoffed back as he crossed his arms over his chest, staring at the back of his baba's head unimpressed over him thinking he'd make the same mistake of asking again.
"Baby bat what did we agree on when it comes to breaking the law?" Dick called out close to the penthouse front door, putting Haley's body harness on as she pulled too much on her leash when its clipped to her collar. None of them wanted her to carry on strangling herself and so, a nice multicolour harness was bought for her to wear on walks that her leash clip onto the back off.
"If I must break the law then I must bring Uncle Wallace. He'll keep me alive and out of any serious trouble during my law breaking" Damian begrudgingly repeated the rule he agreed to whenever he needed to break the law.
"Good" Dick smiled back brightly, giving a happy nod to his son for remembering their rule.
"Should we be giving him an loophole to breaking the law?" Kon asked with a worried frown as he turned to look at his boyfriend who was clipping the leash onto their dog's harness.
"Wally would protect our son while he's breaking the law. I'd much prefer Damian breaking the law under Wally's care than trusting our son with someone else we're friends or family with. I know they won't fully hold him back from the worse or keep an eye on him completely. Wally would look out for him for us and keep his humanity safe" Dick calmly explained his reasoning for giving such a loophole to their son if he decided to break the law. Knowing he could trust his best friend to protect their son, physically and emotionally.
Kon relaxed, giving an comforting nod in return as he understood better and agreed over the rule a little bit more now. He'd want their son to be with someone they could trust to care for him if he ever broke the law.
"As I was speaking first, I do wish to return to my current conversation without interruption, Tati" Damian spoke up with a disapproving tone, lightly glaring towards his Tati for interrupting him.
"Sorry, Dami. Carry on. I'll go walk Haley" Dick apologizes with an guilty smile, hurrying out the door with Haley to show he wasn't interrupt anymore.
Damian waited another two minutes, staring at the front door to check his Tati didn't forget anything important before walking round to stand in front of his Baba. Wanting to carry on with his important conversation now they won't be disturb.
"As you were saying, batty.." Kon smiled back, giving his son an encouraging nod.
"I have an art showing at school next month and I'll be expecting your arrival with Tati's presence. I am expected to gain a small foolish prize for my drawing. I think that as my own award, I deserve to be sat on your shoulders as we head home together. I will to sit taller than my fellow classmates. Tati is sadly shorter than some of the other dad's that will be arriving" Damian announced as he stood completely serious over his demand for his Baba to be at the showing with his Tati. Requesting to be sat on his Baba's shoulders as his own award afterwards.
"I wouldn't dream of missing it" Kon promised with a soft smile, ruffling his son's hair and knowing he would have gone if Damian asked or not. Neither he nor Dick has missed a single big moment or important moment of the boy's life since he fell into their care.
"I am pleased to hear so. Tati holds the details, ask him for them once he has returned with my little sister" Damian huffed back as he crossed his arms over his stomach, giving a stern but happy nod.
"Technically she's your big sister. Dick adopted her first. Plus, she'd be older then you in dog years" Kon pointed out with a small shrug as Haley was taken in by his boyfriend first and was older in her dog years compare to their son.
Kon just grinned as he got into a playful argument with his son over who was the older sibling between Damian and Haley. Titus left out of the argument as well as Alfred the cat as neither was siblings but beloved friends to the boy instead.
Kon took pride in knowing he could have light and cheerful arguments that would never turn heated with his son. Knowing that if they had returned the clock by nine months, the boy would have only known arguments and fights that turned heated, dangerous and deadly.
But now his son was able to be carefree and openly disagree without having to fear he'd be punished for speaking up or have his life placed at risk.
Kon knew his boyfriend would sometimes push towards little fights. To push their son into standing up for what he believed in and liked. To grow into his own person and be brave enough to speak loud enough to be heard.
Dick had cried in his boyfriend's arms the first night Damian out randomly blurted out a complaint over only gaining a single kiss or hug when tucked in bed. Wanting both a hug and kiss when tucked in bed and deciding that the night was the perfect time to pick an fight over the nightly habit. Now he gets both a kiss and hug whenever he's tucked in bed by one of them or both.
Five Months Later,
After Bruce has Returned from being Lost in Time and Returned to being Batman again...
Batman, Bruce, had merely stared down as his youngest had walked over to him on the random rooftop mid patrol and lifted his arms into the air expectedly.
Robin stayed staring up at Batman without any shame or embarrassment and stayed waiting to be picked up. He had found himself at an reasonable time to allow his younger body to take a few minutes of rest. He deserved some rest while it was safe to do.
But Batman stayed just staring at Damian and left rather confused over the whole current action. Not knowing what his youngest was after or expecting from him. Wondering if this was something his oldest had taught him during his Batman filling in days.
It could be a code or something new that Bruce was not told over.
Damian soon frowned, lowering his arms as he realized his father wasn't going to pick him up and carry him as his other two out of four parents had done. Tilting his head to the side as he thought over his Baba and Tati never once hesitation to scoop him up in their arms and carry him around.
He's taken notice over his father being more distance and keeping him at arms reach. Acting as if he was still a burden and not a son. Just as he did before he went missing in time.
Damian felt, unlike the time before, that he didn't miss his mother but his other two parents instead. He knew he was welcomed to visit them in blüdhaven whenever he wanted. That he was able to call whenever he found himself needing them, if it was for something big, small or life threatening. They'd be there as soon as they could for him.
Damian wanted to return home but he also knew he had to give his father a try first. He'd only fully moved back into the manor since a month ago when his father took back the cowl again.
"Father" Damian spoke up as he turned back to the original Batman, deciding if he couldn't rest his body than he should look after his growing body in other ways.
"Robin?" Batman questioned as he turned back to his youngest, wondering what he was after now.
"I wish for a snack. Refuelling my growing body is needed if I wish to grow big and strong" Damian announced firmly as he looked up at his father expectedly yet again.
"A snack?" Batman repeated, lost in his confusion over his youngest recent behaviours around him.
"Yes. They should be kept in that pocket of your utility belt" Damian replied as he pointed at his father's utility belt pouch that normally held a snack for him.
"I haven't gotten any- I did not pack these" Batman started to reject before growing startled as he pulled out a sandwich bag with some apple slices chopped up inside. Knowing he didn't restock that into his belt before he left.
"They are for me. Agent A must have known to still pack them for me. He agrees a growing boy needs to keep his strength up" Damian simply explained as he accepted the snack packed for him.
Bruce was only left more confused over what changes had been made since Dick had stepped up as Batman.
After Patrol...
Damian frowned as he found he was tucking himself in bed. Using his sheathed Katana to pat down his bed cover to keep himself tucked in as best as he possible could. His Tati allowed him to sleep with his katana as long as it stayed sheath and Damian didn't want to make neither his Tati or Baba cry by accidently cutting himself in his sleep, so he kept it sheathed.
Slipping his Katana under his covers before willing an arm free and patting his own head as firmly but gently as he possible could. Pressing two dingers to his lips before pressing them to both cheeks, one after the other.
Awkwardly squeezing his other shoulder with his arm as a form of an hug before slipping his arm back under his covers as he liked it to be. Closing his eyes and feeling ready for sleep now he was properly tucked in.
"I shall sleep as well as my body and mind allows" Damian whispers to himself as he hears the "Sleep well, Dami" and "Goodnight, Batty" or the rare "Sweet dreams, Baby bat" and "Sleep tight, son" on the more roughter nights of patrol.
"Soon enough you won't be needing us at all to tuck you in. Everyone always says that children grow up so fast but I didn't our son to grow up so fast as soon as we looked away. I'm not ready for my baby bat to grow into his own man" Dick confessed with a pout as he came flipping into his son's bedroom through the opened window, eyes growing wet at the thought over his son growing up so fast.
Kon stumbled into the room through the window less graceful and practically rolled in and landed with a bit of a thud. Awkwardly pushing himself to stand as his boyfriend closed the window to stop a draft from flowing in.
"Tati? Baba? Are you currently breaking into Batman's home?" Damian questioned with an startled expression, as well as a bit of pride in his eyes over his other parents sneaking past Batman's defences.
"I wanted to use the front door but Dick knew the whole "no meta" rule was back and snuck me past all the manors cameras and meta sensors on the manor grounds. Neither of us want to risk missing out on Alfred's cooking for family Sunday lunches" Kon complained as he brushed away the invisible dirt from his SB outfit and lightly glancing to his boyfriend unimpressed over them breaking into the Wayne's manor just so they could still join for Family Sunday lunch.
"Why have you arrived so early in the morning? You're own patrols would have barely have ended less than an hour ago. You would have had to cut patrol short to be here at this time" Damian mumbled back with furrowed eyebrows as he understood it was an hours drive, even at night, and the pair would have had to cut their own patrol short to reach him before he fell asleep.
"We did. We missed tucking our baby in bed. Knew we'd be catching you after patrol and came to tuck you in" Dick smiled back sweetly as he hurried over to his son's bed, sitting on the end and filled with joy over being able to see his son again. He's missed him so much.
"We thought it's been long enough since Bruce took you from us and you should be settled enough in the manor enough for us to pay a visit" Kon explained as he walked over to the bed, calmer than his boyfriend but his steps were still quick as he's missed his son too.
And Kon was able to sleep much happier in his life after he and his boyfriend arrived home after tucking their son in bed. Seeing how happy the small act made their boy and knowing he'd be sleeping peaceful before his alarm for school would have gone off.
Kon knew he was a better father than either Batman or Superman could ever dream of being.
Kon slept in peace knowing he'd done his best for his family in making them happy.
