Gone Too Long || Poe X Reader

"Don't go, Poe... please..." I cry into his shoulder, hugging him tighter, like he was my lifeline.

"I have to. It's the only chance we have to find Luke Skywalker." He whispers back, wrapping his arms around my waist.

"B-b-but what happens i-i-if you d-d-don't..." I trail off as my tears fall onto his jacket, leaving water marks.

"(Y/N)," Poe says, gently grabbing my chin so I'm looking up into his beautiful brown eyes. "I'm coming back."

"P-p-promise?" I stutter.

"I promise." The pilot huskily whispers as he kisses my forehead.

We untangle from our embrace, and walk hand in hand towards the tarmac.

As he climbs up the ladder towards the cockpit, the tears start to flow again.

"Poe! Wait!" I yell, grasping the air in a desperate action.

He turns around, halfway up the ladder, flashing me his trademark smirk.

"You'll be fine Y/N! Just keep outta trouble while I'm gone will ya?" He teases, climbing into the cockpit and pulling his helmet on.

The canopy of the cockpit lowers and the X-Wing roars to life.

The next thing I knew, the fighter left D'Qar's atmosphere, a piece of my heart along with it.

Knock. Knock.

"L/N. Open up. I've got to talk to you." A voice whispered from the other side of the door to my quarters.

What was someone doing at this time of night?

Slowly, you make your way to the door, now more curious than ever.

The door opened to reveal none other than Jessika Pava, a pilot from your squadron.

Wait... Black Squadron...

"What are you doing here?" You demand, eyes wild, your tired brain instantly putting the pieces together.

Jess's eyes soften.

"I'm sorry, Y/N... It's Poe... He's been captured by the First Order..."

The rest of her sentence didn't matter.

You didn't even hear it.

You sink to your knees and sob.

Jess puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder.

"But knowing Dameron, he'll probably find a way outta there." She said, her voice filled with false hope.

You abruptly stand up, mutter a thank you, and shut the door to your quarters, throwing yourself onto the bed, still sobbing madly.

**End of Flashbacks**

It's been a week sine that awful news reached you. But you refused to give up hope.

Poe was out there somewhere. He'd promised that he'd come back.

And Poe never breaks his promises.

You pull yourself out of bed, throwing on your uniform and make your way to the tarmac.

Seeing that you were a mechanic before you became a pilot, Leia had assigned you to mechanic duties while you struggled with your grief.

You grab your toolbox from the hangar and head out into D'Qar's sunshine.

"Hey! Y/N!" A voice called from the other side of the tarmac, "Could you come over here for a sec?"

The voice belonged to another pilot from Poe's squadron, Snap Wexley.

You quickly make your way over to Snap, dodging ground personnel.

"Hey Snap. What seems to be the problem?" You ask warily, eyeing his fighter.

Nothing seemed to be broken, but you knew better than that.

"Hyperdrive's fried." He replies simply. "Can you fix it?"

Fix your own kriffing Hyperdrive!

You sigh.

"Sure. I'll take a look."

Snap claps you on the back.

"Great. Thanks Y/N."

"No problem..." You mutter, your mood getting worse by the second.

**Two Hours Later**

"You have got to be kriffing kidding me right now!" You yell, attempting to wrench a stubborn pipe free from the bottom of the X-Wing.

"That's it! I'm done!" You yell at the pipe, crawling out from under the fighter, wiping your greasy hands on a handkerchief, tossing it aside.

There was a sudden flurry of activity on the tarmac as a small, unmarked fighter landed.

People rush past you, weapons draw, faces grave.

You draw your own blaster and do the same, pushing through the mob of Resistance members ringing the ship.

A hand pokes out from the cockpit, along with a voice.

"Easy there guys! It's Commander Poe Dameron!" The voice yells.

The grip on my weapon tightened.

If this was some thug...

But the voice wasn't lying.

A second later, the man you missed so dearly, climbed out of the fighter.

"Poe!" You scream, running towards him, not caring how stupid you must look.

He turns, his brown eyes meeting your E/C ones.

"Y/N!" He yells, running towards you, meeting you halfway, wrapping you in a warm embrace.

"Thank the Maker you're alive..." You breathe, taking in the feeling of his strong frame against yours.

"I told you I'd come back, and here I am." Poe whispers, his voice weak.

That's when you noticed.

There were rips in his jacket, along with bloodstains. His face was plastered in dried blood. He looked like a mess.

"What happened to you?" You ask quietly, gazing up at him with concerned eyes.

He casts you a sad smile.

"You don't need to worry about that. I made it back to you in one piece, didn't I?" The exhausted pilot sighs, hugging you tighter.

"Yeah... you did..." You reply hoarsely, unable to find words.

"I told you I always keep my promises."

Poe kisses your forehead as you close your eyes, locking this moment away in your memories forever.
