19 | It's a trap!

◈A D R I A N◈

We both sat on the couch looking straight at the TV screen, unsure of who should start first.

"After you," Logan offered generously.

A list of questions automatically whizzed through my mind. His favourite food? What kind of music genre he liked?

You sound like a lovesick twelve-year-old, my inner self sneered.

I ignored that annoying voice and continued pondering over the options. The possibilities were endless. I needed to choose wisely. To strategize.

Logan cleared his throat, subtly urging me to hurry up. I knew I was taking too much time.

"Tell me about your ex-wife," I blurted out.

Logan turned his head to look at me, his brows raised in surprise. "That's not how this work, kid. You need to narrow down your scope or I'll end up spilling all my secrets," he grinned.

I flushed in embarrassment. I guessed I was too greedy.

"Why did you guys break up?" I asked slowly.

It took a moment for Logan to answer that I was starting to doubt my question. Was that too personal?

"We didn't break up, we divorced," he snickered at my childish words. "She had a miscarriage," he added wryly.

I remained silent, waiting for him to continue but he stayed quiet. The sound of the downpour filled the silence.

So he really had a kid. I felt a slight relief when I heard she miscarried.

Does that make me a terrible person? Feeling relieved over a dead foetus?

My stomach churned at the thought. I was getting more and more fucked-up.

"So you left her because she lost your child?"

Logan whipped his head towards me as if I just accused him for murder. His eyes were grim as he gritted out, "No. Kara was the one who suggested it."

I flinched a little at his hard tone. He took a deep breath and said, "That's two questions in a row. Play by the rules, will ya? You keep breaking them."

I nodded slightly, trying my best to appease him.

"Guess it's my turn then. Are you thinking about courting Kara?"

"Wh-what?" I sputtered. I couldn't believe my ears. Did he really think I asked those questions because I've got the hots for his ex-wife?

"You kept asking about her," he shrugged slightly as he slid lower and stretched his arms over his head. "I'm warning you, don't even think about it. She's out of your league."

My jaw dropped at the statement. What did that supposed to mean?

"I wasn't thinking about going after her! She's not even my type," I defended myself.

Logan was still staring at me, suspicion was visible in his eyes.

"Besides, I have a girlfriend," I lied through my teeth, looking as earnest as I could to convince him.

He smirked and shook his head. I knew he was suppressing a laughter from the way his eyes crinkled and his lips sealed tight.

"I'm serious. Little lamb like you shouldn't be in the same cage with a cougar," he drawled as he got up from the couch and walked to the kitchen.

I shot up from my seat immediately and followed after him. The forgotten ice cream caught his attention when Logan made his way to the sink. His lips curled in disgust when he tilted the tub slightly to see the strawberries swimming in the green sugary liquid.

He replaced the lid over the tub and held it up for me to see. "You owe me this," he said before dumping it into the trashcan. I dismissed it with an impatient huff.

"I'm serious too. I really have a girlfriend. We've been going out for two months now," I explained. My lies sounded more believable now that I was determined to convince him.

"Oh, really?" Logan replied dismissively as he turned the tap and started washing the mugs and a couple of greasy plates.

The way he answered as if he was merely entertaining me made my blood sizzle. I gripped his forearm to get his attention. "I'm. Not. Going. After. Your. Woman," I enunciated every word carefully to drill them into his stubborn, hard skull.

He placed his hand on top of mine, his wet palm calming my nerves down a little. "Relax, kid. I'm just pulling your leg."

I removed my hand as Logan placed the last plate on the dish rack and wiped his hand on a piece of cloth hung on the wall. He then turned his attention to me as he leaned against the countertop.

"I know you don't like Kara. In fact, you looked like you were about to twist her head off," Logan said with a laugh.

I remained silent. I didn't know my hostility was plain as day. Guess I need to learn to mask my feelings better.

"I believe I have one more question to ask since you broke every rules we've established," Logan continued.

I nodded my head in agreement, more than glad to put that horrible misunderstanding behind.

Logan didn't ask right away. Instead, he fixed his gaze on the wicker basket with his brows furrowed as if he couldn't remember his question.

"What happened to your lower back?" Logan mumbled out the question.

I froze instantly. Like a porcupine, I tensed and got defensive. Instead of quills, sharp words were ready on the tip of my tongue, ready to attack.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I replied curtly with my fingers crossed, hoping he wasn't talking about that.

"Those scars on your lower back. How did you get them?" Logan asked again.

How did he find out about that?

"I saw them...or rather felt them when you fainted on me," he explained, seemingly feeling abashed. I glared at him.

"I had to carry you back," he shrugged his shoulders as if it was the most natural thing to do. "I wasn't feeling you up though," he joked.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to appreciate his good humour.

"Nothing happened. It's none of your business anyway," I snapped at him.

"That's not how the game wo–"

"Well, fuck this game," I cut him off. "I'm out."

I pushed past him to leave. To run away just like the coward I was.

Logan's hand shot out and gripped my shoulders to stop me. "No need to go all feral on me. I ask, you answer. That's how the game works," he reminded. "'Sides, you agreed on this."

"Not anymore," I whispered, resolution evident in my eyes. I walked out of his apartment, closed the door and left.
