"Derek?"

Aurora's eyes were wide and brimming with tears, her disheveled appearance matching his own.

"I need to talk to you," Derek clenched his jaw before strolling past her into the girl's house.

"Come on in," she muttered sarcastically, but followed him to her living room, taking a seat on the couch as the alpha werewolf paced in front of her.

"There's something I should have warned you about from the beginning," Derek continued, looking uncharacteristically worried, "it's about Scott."

"Oh," Aurora's heart plummeted in her chest at the mere sound of the boy's name, "look, I'm really sorry, but I don't exactly want to talk about him right now."

"Just listen, okay?" Derek rolled his eyes at the stubborn girl, "There's a reason Scott wasn't able to stop himself from hurting your piece of trash ex, and why he's been infatuated with you since fifth grade."

"What?" Aurora frowned, "But we've only started talking this year. We didn't even know each other before then."

"He knew you," Derek looked at her sincerely.

"Okay," a flush painted itself across Aurora's cheeks and the bridge of her freckled nose, "but that still doesn't explain-"

"You're true mates," the gruff man cut her off before she could dive into one of her long winded rambles.

"Uh," she blinked, "what?"

"It's a rare thing that happens with werewolves, and it almost never happens to bitten ones," he elaborated, "essentially, the two of you are made for each other. It's in your chemical makeup. Always has been."

"But Scott didn't get turned until this year," Aurora denied, "how could he have felt the connection since fifth grade?"

"It's in his blood," he shrugged, "it's always been there because he has always had the potential to be turned. It's just extremely amplified now that he has shifted."

"Then why haven't I noticed him until this year?" she demanded, her heart racing at the implications behind Derek's words.

"It only amplified for him, but it triggered the connection for you," Derek explained, "I think it is probably what triggered your powers, too."

"What the hell does that mean?" she frowned defiantly.

"Your species and his are polar opposites," he huffed at her abrasive attitude, "nurturer versus protector, reason versus instinct, healer versus predator."

"I don't-," Aurora stuttered, "how do you know so much about this anyway?"

Shadows danced across the Alpha werewolf's face, and his mossy eyes glinted hauntingly.

"I used to have one."
