Devyn's POV
When Corey came back, he ran up to and hugged me.
"What's wrong, Corey?"
Even though we broke up, I still loved him.
I know, it's cheesy, but we were together for so long.
Before college to be exact and you can't just brush them off.
I still feel like something is there.
Not much, but there is.
"E-Elton said he was going to come take you away to God knows where."
He started crying as I hugged him.
"Oh, Corey. It's okay. There's nothing to be worried about. I'm here, alright?"
Within seconds, I felt a sharp pain go through my spine as I heard Corey yell.
I fell to the floor as the feeling went to my legs and took them out from under me.
Then the hospital started spinning and slowly turned into nothing but black.
~~~
Sam's POV
I heard and saw everything.
Corey and Devyn were talking about something when I heard a pop noise right before Devyn hit the floor.
A puddle started forming around Devyn as she bleed out on to the cold hard ground.
"We need a doctor!"
Corey yelled, holding Devyn in his arms.
Tears started falling down my face when I reached over and grabbed wje pressed the emergency help button.
A couple of nurses ran to Devyn as they headed towards my room.
Another one came in to see if I was alright.
"Are you okay?"
I sniffled, nodding my head.
"What happened?"
"They were standing there talking about something when she just fell to the floor and then blood came out of nowhere."
"Okay."
As I full on sobbed, I thought of Colby right before the nice lady walked back out the door.
"Can you see if my boyfriend is alright? I want to make sure he's okay."
I asked her and she nodded.
"Do you want me to tell him you asked and then come back here?"
"Yeah. His room number is 340."
"Okay. I'll be back soon."
I looked past the lady as she walked out the door, seeing Corey sitting on the floor, crying.
"Corey."
I half-yelled, getting his attention by doing so.
"What?"
He asked as he wiped away his tears.
"Come here."
"What's happening?"
I asked, worried about Devyn.
"It's Dev."
My heart sank.
"What is it?"
"She was shot."
Tears formed in my eyes.
He tried to get himself calmed down as he choked on his tears.
"All I saw was her fall to the ground midway through her sentence and there was blood coming from a hole in her back."
Now I've started crying.
"Oh my God."
The lady that said she would make sure Colby was okay walked in, eyes full of sorrow.
"He's okay, but I don't know how the girl is. The doctor stopped me in the hallway and said she was in surgery."
I nodded in relief, still worried about Devyn.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
She walked back out and went the other way.
~~~
Corey paced around the room for hours as he waited for the news.
I sat there and watched him, knowing that I couldn't do anything to comfort him.
"Are you... Corey Scherer?"
A doctor asked, walking into the room.
"Yes. How's Devyn?"
The doctor sighed, looking at his clipboard.
"She's out of surgery and okay for right now..."
"But..."
Corey said, knowing it wasn't going to be good.
"But she got hit in the spinal cord and she might be paralyzed."
Corey's face turned white as more tears formed in his eyes.
The doctor sighed again.
"And..."
A long pause began to fill the room.
"And there's a black spot in her brain on the MRI image."
It felt as if someone pulled my heart out of my chest.
I knew what this meant.
Corey instantly started sobbing.
"D-do you know what it is?"
He managed to ask before the tears came.
My chest grew tighter around my heart as he asked.
"We think it's a tumor, but we don't know for sure. We'll have to do a couple of tests, then if it is, we'll have to figure out if it's malignant or benign."
"What's the difference?"
Corey asked, sniffling.
The doctor looked at both of us before walking over and taking a seat in one of the visitor chairs.
"You might want to sit down too."
He recommended.
Corey did and folded his hands in his lap, staring at the doctor.
"Benign means that it has a higher chance of being able to be operable and it isn't cancerous, but malignant isn't. It is the cancerous kind and can spread quickly if you don't catch it in time."
Corey just sat there, rocking himself back and forth in his chair as he cried into his knees.
"If it is malignant and spreads, we won't be able to get it out without having it in more places where we can't operate and take it out."
I started crying even harder.
So did Corey.
"So what do we do for each?"
Corey asked, looking at me then the doctor.
"Well, for benign, you can just have her get a surgery, but for the malignant and if it spreads, all you can do is follow her every step of the way and love her as much as you can."
It felt as if everything in my life was falling apart.
I could tell it was even worse for Corey.
"I'm so sorry you have to go through this and I'll be back, but I have to go and get the tests ready."
He stood up and left the room.
Corey and I just sat there, crying.
I don't know when, but I eventually cried myself to sleep.
