"Right. For the last time, you pilfering pest-".
Marigold ran her hands from the top of her head, over her arms and down to her waist. She was definitely dreaming. There was no other explanation for the previous events that had led to her being inside the bank one minute to outside with just a blink of her deep brown eyes.
The Englishman crouched down in front of his suitcase, he held the Niffler in one hand and unclasped the case with the other as he told the animal off for thieving. If Lady Marigold hadn't been certain that the man had lied about his watch being stolen, she was certain now.
"Paws off what doesn't belong to you," The man placed the Niffler into the suitcase before closing it again.
The streets were filled with police, the bank visitors were being cleared out of the building and the alarm that had been rung inside echoed down the New York street. Marigold spotted Leopold exiting the bank, he looked exasperated – his fiancee could only assume his meeting had been cut short – as he shouted at the woman in front of him to 'Hurry along'. Marigold turned her back to him, afraid that he'd notice her and without August, who was nowhere to be seen beside Leopold, Lady Marigold preferred to stay with the strange Englishman.
The man looked over his shoulder to Marigold and the American man who was clinging to the wall, "Awfully sorry about that," he apologised.
The man stood up with his case in his hand and turned to the two people he had transported out of the bank where chaos was ensuing as policemen blew their whistles and ordered people to be on their way. The Englishman sat his suitcase by his feet and the American man pointed at it.
"What the hell was that?".
"Nothing that needs concern you," The man responded as he dug into his coat pocket.
Marigold looked between the two men, "That is a Niffler". The Englishman seemed almost surprised that Marigold had remembered that.
"That's right," He pulled Marigold's necklace from his pocket and curled the silver chain round his hand as he held it out to the woman in front of him. He feared that if his Niffler hadn't damaged her jewellery, he surely would if he dropped it at Marigold's feet.
Marigold's brows furrowed, she wasn't entirely sure how the man she had never met before had managed to pick her necklace from a pile of jewels and coins. It was another thing that didn't make any sense.
"How did-" Taking the necklace from the man, Marigold began to question him but was shortly cut off as the man lightly grasped Marigold's wrist and pulled her closer to the American man who looked like he was going to puke.
"Now, unfortunately, you two have seen far too much," He grabbed the American man by his blazer and moved him away from the wall. "If you wouldn't mind, if you just stand there. This'll be over in a jiffy".
"What will be over?" Marigold questioned.
The man didn't answer and instead he turned on his heel as he reached into his coat sleeve. The American man grabbed a suitcase and swung it suddenly, hitting the Englishman in the head and knocking him to the ground.
"Oh my!" A gasp of breath got caught in Marigold's throat as she jumped. The day had really taken a strange turn.
The American man staggered back before quickly turning and bolting off towards the police and the crowd of disorderly people with only a shout of an apology.
"Are you-?" Marigold didn't move towards the Englishman she had been left with as he stood up. "Are you alright, sir?" Marigold asked.
He looked past Marigold in search of the man who had hit him but he had disappeared into the swarm of citizens who were doing a terrible job at listening to the police as they tried to direct them away from the bank.
"Yes," The man rubbed the back of his head as he nodded. "I was not prepared for that".
A smile crept onto Marigold's face, "I can see". The man dropped his gaze from Marigold's as a similar faint smile tugged at his lips.
"Lady Marigold," Marigold froze. She had hoped that August would have found her first but her terrible luck led Leopold Harvey straight to her.
The Englishman looked over his shoulder to Leopold as he hurried toward them. The man assumed that the woman he stood with was 'Lady Marigold'.
Marigold straightened her back and tucked her hands behind it as she stepped towards her fiance.
"What are you doing out here?" Leopold's question was directed at Marigold but his eyes never left the Englishman. He stared him up and down, making both him and Lady Marigold uncomfortable. Leopold disregarded the stick the man held in his hand.
"I got lost. The alarms went off and I couldn-".
Leopold nodded, "I told you not to wander," Marigold hummed, that was one of the few things Leopold always seemed to say to her. August often joked that Leopold was far too old to chase Marigold and that is why he liked to keep her on a short leash, "Where is your brother? He came looking for you".
"I haven't seen August," Marigold responded. "And as I was saying, the alarms went off and I couldn't find you or my brother but Mr-" Marigold looked to the man beside her. She didn't know his name. "I'm awful sorry, I didn't catch your name".
The man caught Marigold's gaze, "Newt. My name is Newt Scamander," The man introduced himself.
Marigold smiled with a small nod, "Mr Scamander led me out here. I got a little flustered inside and-".
"That was considerate of you," Leopold shifted his stare from Marigold to Newt and he held his hand out to his future wife, "Come now, dear. I'm sure Newt-" For someone who spoke about respect, Leopold lacked a great deal of it, "wishes to get on with his day. Thank the kind man and we will be on our way".
Lady Marigold felt like a small child that wasn't allowed to leave her father's side, "Yes, I'm sure he does," Marigold offered Newt a smile, "Thank you, Mr Scamander".
Marigold didn't take his hand. She never liked to, it felt more intimate and intimacy was the last thing Marigold wanted with her father's childhood friend. Instead, Lady Marigold took hold of his arm as she bid Newt a good day and she slipped her necklace into her coat pocket.
Newt stared at Marigold's back and he scratched at the back of his head before turning to look at the crowd that the American man had disappeared into.
"Bugger," Newt muttered.
Marigold's shoulders were tense the entire walk back to the hotel she had been staying in and she hadn't allowed herself to think about Newt and the Niffler. Leopold had been quiet since they had departed from Newt Scamander which was concerning. Not once had he commented on how a woman dressed nor had he complained about the couples who walked a few paces slower. Leopold Harvey was silent.
Leopold took his hat off his head as he entered the hotel suite and hung it on the coat stand as Lady Marigold walked towards the small table that sat in the middle of the room to distance herself from Leopold. A white and light purple tea cup set that August had bought Marigold two days prior to cheer her up was placed in the centre of the wooden table.
"Shall we clean up? I'm sure tea is still being served downstairs".
There was no response from Leopold as he took his black coat off and hung it on the coat stand beside his hat. Marigold took his silence as a simple no to her question and it made her feel uneasy. She was used to tiptoeing around her fiance but more often than not August Wentworth was with her and as much as Leopold despised Marigold's brother, he respected him more than the woman who would soon be his wife.
Marigold stepped behind one of the two chairs around the table and placed her hands on the top of it. "I can see if the hotel will bring us tea up to our suite, if that is something you'd like?".
Leopold slammed the door shut. It shook in its frame and Lady Marigold flinched as her grip on the wooden chair tightened.
"Mr Harvey, I-".
"Silence!" Leopold's voice boomed around the suite. Marigold's mouth twisted into a rictus. "Do you wish to know what I would like?" Marigold nodded, she didn't dare to speak out of fear of angering him further. "I would like for my wife to not be seen as some man's whore," Leopold spat his words, each one laced with more venom than the previous. "What do you take me for? A fool? Is that it, Lady Marigold?".
Marigold shook her head, "No. No, Mr Harvey. You're not-".
"You have always been ungrateful. Your father handed you everything from the day you were born but it was not enough. You travelled Europe for a year, giving yourself to whomever, I suppose and you are still the same spoiled little girl," Leopold crossed the room and stood on the opposite side of the table. Marigold's grip on the chair loosened and she took a hesitant step back, "That is going to change. If my children are to be raised in this city I want them to be respectful and if their mother isn't-".
Leopold's voice became background noise. Marigold was positive that she had heard him correctly.
"Raised in this city?" Marigold questioned. Her voice was much harsher than she had expected but she had not planned on moving away from England and her family.
"Yes. I was going to tell you over dinner but you ruined my appetite," Leopold responded.
"Mr Harvey," Marigold shook her head, "I do not wish to leave England. We cannot move-".
Leopold slammed his hand down onto the wooden table, the tea cup rattled on its saucer causing Marigold's eyes to flicker to the delicate pot.
Anger flashed across Leopold's eyes and he snatched the tea cup off the table and threw it at the wall to his right. The tea cup shattered against the hard wall and clattered to pieces on the floor. A sharp gasp slipped past Lady Marigold's lips and her eyes blurred with tears that she didn't allow to overflow.
"Look at me," Leopold didn't shout but Marigold still flinched.
Leopold was a vile man. A vile man who had a simple plan for his future with Lady Marigold as his wife. A future Marigold wanted no part of.
"I am your fiance and very soon I will be your husband. And as your husband I will put a stop to these childish voyages and make you the Lady your parents raised you to be".
Leopold ran his fingers over his moustache. Marigold's shallow breaths were all that could be heard in the silence of the room. Leopold stared at her, his eyes were filled with a rage that Marigold had never seen before.
"I have tried so very hard to be kind, Lady Marigold," Leopold's voice was terrifyingly calm. Marigold wished he would shout again, it was less frightening. "I have tried to be kind because I know that you do not wish to marry me. I know that you would rather marry a man of your choosing but the reality is that your father chose me and you have exhausted my patience".
Marigold only wished to marry someone who was kind, someone who was truly kind and compassionate, not a man who pretended until he no longer could.
Lady Marigold didn't move as Leopold walked towards the door without another word. She silently watched him, Marigold's chest rose and fell heavily and Leopold grabbed his hat and coat from the coat hanger.
Leopold didn't look back at Marigold as he opened the door with a clenched jaw, "Clean it up".
The door swung closed behind Leopold and Marigold staggered backwards until she hit the wall behind her. She inhaled a shuddering breath and as she listened to Leopold's footsteps growing quieter and quieter, her warm tears flowed from her eyes.
Leopold Harvey was a vile man.
