An Invitation
"Are you ready for school Cade?" Mom asks.
"Well, you helped me get ready, so you tell me," I respond with a smile. "Can you put Mack's handle in my hand?"
"Sure thing kiddo," Mom says then calls Mack over. I feel the handle brush my fingers so I close my hand. Mack is my guide dog. He sees what I can't see. I walk and he guides me. I stand up out of the chair and Mack and I follow Mom to the mini van. Mom opens the sliding door for me and I make my way in. I reach to my right to find the seat belt. When I feel the course cloth, I grab it and feel for the latch on my left. I buckle in and wait for Mom to put Mack into the passenger seat.
"You all set?" Mom asks.
"I am if I'm buckled in," I say. I hear the van start and I feel us drive out of the driveway. Mom drives us to the school and she opens the door for me. I find the latch and unbuckle myself. I swing my legs around the seat and wait. I feel Mack's handle on my left hand and I step down out of the mini van. Mom leads Mack and I into school and my best friend Easton greets us.
"Hey Cade, Mrs. Jennings," Easton says, pausing in between names.
"Hey man," I say.
"Hello Easton," Mom says. "Are you ready to take him to his classes?"
"I sure am!" he says. I feel hands grab my shoulders.
"Now, you have a good day today. I will see you after school," Mom says.
"Okay Mom. Bye," I say as Easton leads Mack and I to homeroom.

"Sit, Mack," I say as I sit down at the lunch table. I feel a change in the position of the handle so I know Mack sat down.
"Here is your lunch, Cade," Easton says. The lunch table moves so I assume he sat down.
"Thanks," I say. I feel my lunch box for the zipper and I find it. "Am I unzipping it?"
"Uh, yeah," Easton says. I grab a bag and it feels like a sandwich is inside. I hold up the bag. "That's your sandwich."
"Ah," I say. I feel for the two flaps to open the bag. When I do, I open the bag and grab the sandwich.
"So, Cade. I have a question for you," Easton says as I take a bite of my sandwich. I finish chewing before I answer.
"And, what is that?" I take another bite.
"I know you have said before that you aren't a religious person, but would you entertain the idea of my family taking you to church this Sunday?" he asks. I finish chewing and then pause to think.
"Not to be rude, but, why should I go? I mean, why would I entertain in believing in a God that made me blind?" I ask.
"Well, God does things for a reason. I don't know why He made you blind, but what I do know is that He thinks of you as perfect for who you are." he replies. I chuckle.
"I don't know why because I have a disability. I don't have all of my senses like you do. You're perfect." I say.
"Cade. Let me rephrase things. We are not perfect. Only Jesus was perfect. God makes no mistakes and so He made you blind for a reason. Just, please let my family take you to church. Give it one shot. Who knows? You make like it!" Easton counters. I take a deep breath.
"Fine. I will see if my parents will let me go," I say.
"Thank you."

Mom, Dad, Emma and I sit at the dining room table. I'm told Mack is laying on the floor next to me.
"Soooo, Easton invited me to church this Sunday. Could I go?" I ask.
"Why would you go there?" Emma asks.
"Because he was invited," Dad says to Emma. "And, I don't have a problem with him going."
"You don't?" I ask.
"Nope," he says.
"It might be good for you," Mom says. "Do we have to take you there?"
"Uh, no. Easton said they could pick Mack and I up," I say.
"Alright. You can go, Cade. You better be receptive to the people there, okay?"
"Okay," I say.
"This is so ridiculous," Emma says.
"Oh shush it," I say.
